311 consists of Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney and Chad Sexton, P-Nut and SA Martinez. All five members grew up in the 1970's in Omaha, Nebraska. Because of their unique sound (mixing rock, hip-hop, reggae & funk), and because they have always maintained a balance of hard rocking songs and melodic mellow gems - the band has developed a rather diverse fan base. 311 attributes part of their long-term success to their slow-growth grassroots development. In 1992, the band moved all of their belongings into a storage space and literally lived on the road ñ touring relentlessly for years and growing a loyal fan base via word of mouth before ever being embraced by radio or MTV. It was not until after their third album was released that the mainstream media was forced to take notice (due to the band's increasing concert draw) and the band began to climb the sales and radio charts on the success of the song "Down" (which ultimately reached #1). After 14 years of consistent touring, 311 have developed a reputation as one of the hardest working, most influential and most entertaining live bands in the U.S. They have released eight studio albums (four Gold, one Platinum, one Triple-Platinum), a live album, a greatest hits album (Gold) and three dvd's (one Gold, two Platinum). 311 have sold over 8 million records in the U.S.
