hello all,
i have had this game for Ps2 for about a week and am very frustrated at it, i just cannot play good defence, or mediocre, or even crappy defence :x
now, i know there is a defensive strategy guide, but i dont get half the stuff on their.
so, can anyone give me some good advise on how to play better defence.
i use the ps2 version, with the Wizards.

I've been playing the game for two weeks now and here's my advice:
1) Adjust the sliders to the Hall Of Fame version found on this message board. It won't help your defense but the game will be more realistic and simulation-style.
2) Learn to rebound and box out. Check the defense guide for this. The right way to rebound is to get your two post players (CPU controlled) and the player you're controlling in the paint. Keep down the L1 button (which will make your players box out) to keep your opponents out of the paint. Most of the time, one of my CPU players will get the rebound allready. If they don't, try to move your player over the ball. Don't use "Jump". The camera is way to far away in ESPN, and jumping will put you out of position and miss the ball. The focus of rebounding is making a "triangle" in the paint with three players; any coach can tell you that.
It might seem very unimportant but with the simulation sliders, the CPU will shoot a realistic percentage. That means around .500 That also means that he'll miss one out of two shots (and so will you). Don't let him get those rebounds and easy buckets.
If you're still having trouble on the glass, try trading for some great rebounders. Or you could just contact free agent Tyrone Hill who has killer rebounding stats. He's quite useless to do anything else but he does clean the glass. If you're really desperate, get Ben Wallace. Big players also rebound better than small ones. Antonio McDyess has great stats but i get more rebounds with a bigger player/less stats like Vlade Divac.
When you get rebounding down, it's time to move to the other aspects of the defense part of the game.
Last night i played my first game versus the Dallas Mavericks, who shot .620 and .710 from behind the arc. Due to my rebounding game i managed to keep track (shooting .515) and i lost the game in the final minutes. 119-121. If i'd still rebound like a week ago (with jumping on every ball and stuff) they would have blown me away with +30 points. Now i went and get almost every shot they missed and i got a lot of second attempts on offense. Rebounding is the most import defensive task in the game.

Well, Defense is the hardest job in the game but i think its also the easiest. I'm usually the center or power forward on D. What i do is if they come in on D i just stuff them. If im not one of those posistions, im the Sg or PG. Im rarely the SF. If im one of the guards ill keep trying to pivk them un til they pass, lose the ball, or i get a foul call.

For me it took a while to get good at defence...
1. First choose a position for your main defensive control(I took PG).
2. Make sure that your man has appropritate attributes(speed, steal, block for me)
3. Tweak the sliders to your liking
4. Practice over and over!!! (I have played the game for so long that I can pretty much predict every play that the AI runs.)
Hope that helps...
