oops mets fan. that was your 120 million dollar man looking at strike 3 to end your season. carlos beltran is a baby and a wuss. as an astros fan, nothing was better than to see him strike out looking, i was happier seeing that then i was seeing us go to the world series the next year after beltran bailed to sign that enormous deal. he gets way too much national attention all because the cardinals kept throwing pitches right down the middle in 2004 when he hit about 234 homeruns in a matter of a few games. but in 2004, the cards got by the stros and also in 2006 they got by beltran again.

Please! You're still mad that he didn't sign back with the assthrows. Instead of worrying about a gold glove MVP candidate you should be worrying about 1. The rocket 2. your closer 3. Your offense!

Carlos Beltran is worth every penny of what he makes.Sure he struck out in a clutch spot, but no Mets fan would blame it on him.He was consistent all year hitting 41 homeruns and driving in 116 RBIs. Both the Astros and the Dbacks didn't make the playoffs and your all jealous that you dont have him on your team.

Your not paying him 120 million for just that situation. He has a 7 year deal worth 119 million. The thing about clutchness is that it all dont fall on 1 situation. Beltran had a couple walk offs in the 2006 season.Beltran is worth it, he won the gold glove, hit 41 homeruns he was second in the NL with runs-127,4th in slugging-.594 and 5th in OPS. I know you wish he was still on your team,if he was maybe the Astros would have made the playoffs ,but hes a Met now.

Sorry im late to help u here nyJetsMets...
First of all if you are going to base beltran's entire year on that 1 at bat, then you sir just do not understand baseball. I was at that game, and yes i have been questioning him all offseason about why he didnt swing at the first fastball over the plate, but you know what, you just have to get over that.
Beltran is a 40+ homerun guy who is one of the top 3 defensive center fielders in the game, and who plays with absolutely no ego. He played almost all of 2005 hurt which dramatically impacted his #s (well, that and the stupid mets fans who boo'd him every time he didn't get a hit). He's a quiet leader and when you look back at his contract that he got in 2005, compared to the contracts guys like soriano, who can't play D or hit for average for his life, its not all that bad at all. So lets stop using that against him when he is evaluated as a player.

I agree, the guy had All-Star crudentials and one Hell of a year hittign 41 Hr's and 116 RBI's People who say this man is overrated must be jealous and upset that he is providing and winning with our team. He is worth the 120 Million that he is paid. You can't judge a man by one moment. You wouldnt judge Mariano Rivera JUST because he blew the game in the 2001 WS against the DBack and call him overrated, he's one of the best. So why judge Beltran just bcause he struck in one atbat in the NLCS???

YOUR COMPARING A SHOE IN HALL OF FAMER WITH CARLOS BELTRAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! your are pathetic, dont u say that anyone would think about rivera being over rated. hes mr automatic hes as clutch as they come and he had 1 bloop single go over jeters head, after years of closing games and world series out for the yanks. when beltran leads his team to a few world series, then thats fine u can use the 2 in the same sentence. but until your franchise player stops coming up to the plate with the season on the line and keeps the bat on his shoulder then shut up and stop thinking beltran is god.

Perfect analogy. Also dont forget about 2004 against the Bo Sox (by the way sorry to you red sox/patriots fans out there that must have been though tonight).
Even if Beltran swung and grounded out to second or flew out to center people would still say he choked. I've heard tons of people say that it wouldnt be this bad if he had just swung the bat, but thats not ture at all.

That one at bat does not by any means make the man overrated. The fact that he is a career .281 hitter and he strikes out 115 times a season are what makes him overrated. The fact he has hit .300 or better exactly twice in the 9 seasons he has played in the major leagues makes him overrated. The fact that he has a .984 fielding percentage for an outfielder while the league average fielding percentage over his career has been .988 makes him overrated.

Looks like someone's actually paying attention! The thing that drives me crazy though is that first pitch fastball that he let go by for strike one. If any of you recall, when the mets played the Cards in August beltran came up in the bottom of the 9th down by 1 run and smoked a first pitch fastball by issringhaussen (sp?) over the right field wall for the game winning homer. I was at that game as well as game 7 of the NLCS and I still remember how great it felt to see beltran win the game like that and how incredible it would have been to see him do the same in the postseason.
Ps. The Crowd after endy's catch in the playoffs was amazing. Everybody jumping up and down and yelling as loud as they possibly could for more than 2 straight mins. Amazing

Was that the same game that Pujols had 7 RBI's in the first 5 innings and then Delgado hit 2 homers to take the lead? I think Jeff Weaver started that game. I remember that game because it was August 22 the day before my birthday and LaRussa decided to leave Weaver in long enough to blow it. Pujols had a Grand Slam in the 4th and a 3 run shot in the 5th but the Cardinals still lost 8-7 thanks to Izzy and Weaver

Yes it was. I was at that game and it was insane. Belliard and Duncan made 2 great plays to rob reyes early. Pujols had 7 rbi and delgado hit 2 homers, one of which was a grand slam and also his 400th homerun. Reyes grounded out to start the 9th. Loduca singled to center field, which if i remember correctly So Taguchi almost let get by him. And after the next pitch it was over.

Overpaid? In this day and age, everyone is overpaid. Gil Meche getting $10M a year.
But, the money has to go somewhere and I guess it is only overpaying if a team can't afford it. I mean $10M, $15M, $20M a year isn't much to the larger market teams. They can easily afford to pay these prices. But if you take Beltran and throw him on the Twins where his salary is 1/4 of the entire teams salary, then I'd say he is over paid.
If the Met's only offered him what everyone else was willing to pay, then he would have probably went somehwere else. But, they had the extra money to make sure that he became a Met.
I understand that they are paying more for a player who is comperable to players making a lot less, but they needed him and had the money to get him. That is what happens when Scott Boras is your agent.

What? he took more money to play for a better team. Yea what a total jerk.
Who in there right mind wouldn't take a whole lot more money to go work for a different company where you would do the exact same job?
If your a delivery boy for Pizza Hut Pizza making $8/hour and Domino's says they will pay you $12/hour to deliver for them, wouldn't you leave? I know I would.
If someone offered me a whole lot more money to do my same job, I'd be out quickly.
If it's just a little more money than you can rationalize that "well, I like the people I work with" or "I'm real close to good restaurants" or "I got a slightly bigger office" or "my commute is a few miles less" , but when it's a lot more money, I think that rationality goes out the door.
I understand that $10,000,000 a year is more money than I'll probably ever spend in my lifetime and when you make that much, why would you even need $20,000,000? That is the part I can't answer. At what point is the money so much that it doesn't matter that there is more. At what point do you think that at $10M, I can take care of the next 5 generations of family, but at $20M, I can take care of the next 10.

What are you talking about a better team? You must be insane! The Astros were one game away from going to the World Series the year he left and the Mets had just come off of a season in which they finished in 4th place 20 games under .500 71-91. Then the very next year the Astros are in the World Series and the Mets still only finish in 3rd place at 83-79. Clearly it was all about the money and had nothing to do at all with a better team.

Schoeneweis, Wright, Wagner, Newhan, Green, Heilman, Easley, Glavine, Maine, Johnson,D.Williams, Milledge. Lets not bring race in to this PLEASE. Seriously its a lose - lose when that happnes. People say that minaya only brings in latino players, but when he signs wright to a longer and more expensive contract than reyes in the middle of last year, people say that race has an affect on the deal because Wright is white and thats why hes making more.

I think that he meant Carlos Lee and I also think that it is obvious that the best contract at or over 100 million is the one the Cardinals signed with Albert Pujols. 7/100 million and he is the best player in the game. If Carlos Lee is worth 6yr/100 million and Carlos Beltran is worth 7yr/119 millions then Pujols should be worth about 25 million per season for as long as he wants. The fact that he is only making around 14 million a year makes him the biggest bargain in baseball.

Well now you have opened a can of worms that I don't think that you want to get into. Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about. The Cardinals are the best franchise in the history of the National League they have 10 World Championships (second only to the Yankees). They have 17 National League pennants and have been in the playoffs a total of 22 times. They trail only the Yankees for the most wins of any team in the since 2000. They have advanced to 2 World Series since 2004 and 5 NLCS since 2000. They have done all of this without ever reaching $90 million in payroll. They rank 2nd in the National League in attendance (behind only the Dodgers) and they sell out every game. St. Louis is widely regarded as the best baseball city in America. I can understand where you are coming from though as a Mets fan, you naturally have chip on your shoulder because you are treated as a redheaded stepchild in your own city. How can anyone expect a met fan not to be defensive even if their team hasn't done anything ever? I mean you were great in 1986 and 1969 but that is only 2 seasons if you add in all the rest of the years the Mets have an outstanding record of 3408-3742 compared to the Cardinals record of 9765-9111 so yeah you are a great franchise and if the Cardinals don't win another game for the next 4 seasons and during that time the Mets don't lose a single game you will even have a better winning percentage than St. Louis.

Cards fans are loyal, but boy are the cooperate. I have family in St. Louis, and i went to see a game at the new busch stadium in about July this year, and the first thing that i noticed is that you could see more diversity in an Abercrombie and Fitch catalog (thanks to family guy for that one.) I guess its not your fault but the crowd is just so quiet and boring, and even during the playoffs from TV it sounded like the people there were at a tennis match.
I hate to portray mets fans like this, because like myself, most of us are alot more knowlegable than we may make the impression of. but that thing has just bugged me ever since i went to st louis, and now even more after you beat us, and, lead by braden F***ing Looper, and Pujols you guys mocked the "Jose jose jose jose" chant on our field. I understand that the cardinals are a historically good and classy franchise, but right now, these two teams have alot of things to be resolved between each other next year.

They did the chant in the locker room too it was a very special moment for me. Just because Cardinal fans are smart enough to know when to cheer and when to boo doesn't make them boring. If you type into google "best fans in baseball" what is the first link you see? Its about Cardinals fans. Its widely considered that St. Louis has the best fans in the game. We don't need to import soccer cheers to make our shortstop feel better about himself or remember his name or whatever reason you guys do that.
The Cardinals and Mets have had a strong rivalry going back to the 80's. We were better than you in 1985, 1987, and 2006 and you got us in 1986 and 2000. I do need to ask you though, how heartbreaking was it to be the favorites all year and to be expected to cruise through the National League right into the World Series and then have it all fall apart at the end?

I flew to St. louis in September of 2005 (my bro is a Card's fan) and was quite impressed with the fans. Obviosly, everyone dresses in Cardinal Red, but it seemed that everyone we sat by was knowldegable of the team. I heard little old ladies talking about how Larry Walker doubled down the line the night before to tie the game or how Marquis can't walk the leadoff batte. Needless to say, I was very impressed with the fans.
As an A's fan, I think the A's fans are generally pretty smart. I say generally, because if you go to a Wednesday night game, there are 15,000 to 20,000 loyal fans who actually know their baseball. But if you go on a Friday night when the Red Sox are in town, you get 40,000random people who are there just because of the Red Sox and seem to know nothing about baseball and talk crap all game long.
I think you get this at every stadium though, but St. Louis is known for being one of the best baseball towns in the league. Cleveland used to have this reputation as well until things slowed down in the late 90's.

The Franchise can be classy, but the fans arent. At Shea we show Trueness to your team. I went to STL on a school trip, and they took us to Busch Stadium (old). It was as dead as a graveyard. No passion for the game and for the team. People came in the fourth and left in the seventh. I hated it. And the team lost big that day. I cant stand the STL Cards and thier fans

What are you talking about? Maybe you need to check the attendance figures for the past century. St. Louis is always near the top in attendance and as far as the fans go, some of the most knowledgable fans in the world are Cardinals fans. Trueness to your team (is trueness a word?) thats not exactly accurate when talking about Mets fans either in 2006 you averaged 75% attendance and that was in a year that you were actually good (Cardinals averaged 91% and that is only because the left field seats were closed for 3 months).
In 2005: Mets 61% capacity Cards 87%
In 2004: Mets 50% capacity Cards 75%
In 2003: Mets 49% capacity Cards 71%
In 2002: Mets 64% capacity Cards 75%
In 2001: Mets 59% capacity Cards 78%
Its obvious how loyal Mets fans are to their team. You are so loyal that the Mets play in front of an average 20,000 empty seats a night over the course of the last 6 years. I love that Met trueness (?). I have to ask you Metlover22 why do you even bother to say anything at all on here? Everytime you come at me with some ridiculous comment I disprove it using hard facts within minutes.Maybe you should do a little research before you A. It is also unfair to compare the % of the stadium's seats filled because shea has 57,000 seats in it. Compare that to Busch which has about 47,000, and i think the new one may even have less.

And one more thing, it was wrong to compare Shea to Dodger stadium. Its obvious that Dodger stadium is far superior.
The thing im gonna miss about shea, is that they are trimming the new one down to about 45000 seats. It gets so loud in Shea during playoff time and the place really rocks. I just hope the reduction of seats and the inevitable raise of prices doesnt attract a cooperate crowd to games, especially playoff games.

You can't be serious can you? A career .285 hitter (not bad) with an on base percentage of .321 (horrible for a leadoff man) could never be the best SS of all time. Not when guys like Cal Ripken Jr., Ozzie Smith and Alex Rodriguez have played the position. I have said before and I will still stand by it Jimmy Rollins very comparable to Jose Reyes he might even be better only time will tell. It is ridiculous to say that a 24 year old with only 2 full seasons in the Majors will project to be one of the best ever. Albert Pujols has been the best player in the game since he came up in 2001 and it is STILL too early to call him one of the best ever. Case in point look at the careers of Dale Murphy and Jim Rice they were incredible for a few years but aren't even hall of famers now.

In light of my facts being called into question I have decided to come clean. I had misrepresented the old Busch Stadium in a way. When the park was opened you could get 52,000 fans into the stadium but during the time that I had used as a comparison to the Mets the stadium had been remodeled and some seats were removed so that the actual capacity was only 49,676 but still that is close enough to the capacity of Shea Stadium 55,601 to make the comparison.

Like Me, The Mets fans that are like you said are the ones who think just because we had one good season, they think we are a dynasty, When the Mets win a WS and have about Three good seasons of above .500 baseball, then i'll start talking. I'm not saying that were gonna suck this year. It's just that with some of the losses (Martinez, Bradford, Floyd) and how the Phillies have gotten better(F.Garcia, Howard, Utley, Rollins) It's not gonna be a One-Shot over the NL. If the Mets win 9 consecutive games in the Opening Week, then thats a good sign. But if they struggle, then watch what you say

Thank you very much that must have been very time consuming but I really appreciate the fact that you did it. I have stood behind everything I have said in these forums and it is nice to have someone back me up. Maybe this will shut up MetsFan4AMansTouch.
Hopefully the Mets lose the first 3 games of the season but after that if you want to run off 10-20-30 wins in a row that would be fine with me.

well if you start 0-3 that means we start 3-0 I am thrilled with that part of it.
