Long read but worth it
Hey fellow 2K fans.. this message board is for suggestions on how to make “All-Pro Football 2k8” look as close to the NFL brand as possible.. Of course without 2K not having the license they have limitations.. but these can be overcome if 2K decides to make everything in the game fully customizable including.. City and team names, Player Names ,Numbers, and Gear. Uniforms as close as possible in color and design to the correlating city…
Now I may not know everything that the NFL License holds.. what I know for sure is that the Player, Coach, Team Names and logos Can not be used.
However 2K could get around this by say calling a team the New York Colossuses instead of Giants… and of course if the player wants to edit the name to Giants that’s fine
Players names Can’t be used but the numbers can.. so for us the player 2K can correlate players Numbers with their real life counterparts
Example- For the Indianapolis Stallions make the quarterback highly rated and wearing
#18. This makes it easy for the player to recognize that this guy is suited to be
edited to Peyton Manning.
Stadiums- this is the one I’m most iffy on, but I’m not sure that the stadiums are all under
the NFL license cause other events and sports are played there. So if 2K can use Mile High Stadium then they should go ahead and use it for their Denver team
Uniforms- I know for sure that colors of teams can’t be restricted, the designs of the uniforms may be anther story I don’t know, but if the designs of the uniforms are not an issue… just design the exact same uniforms with the same colors as the NFL counterparts. And if this can possibly get 2K in trouble then just make the proper uniform designs and change up the colors… then make that customizable and the player will take care of the rest
Logos- this would be hardest to replicate.. in the past when we have a create a team we are given a bunch of preset logos… this game could still have that (hopefully ones close to NFL counterparts) and make them customizable… but if that is not good enough.. allow the player to upload photos from a flash disc card (or whatever those mem cards are called in cameras and psp) than the player can find a pick of an NFL logo and upload it to the game and open it up in the Team Logo Editor, which every team should have. This may sound like some process but it really isn’t.. and with the capabilities of PS3 I think this though I within limits.
Well that’s all right now.. If any one wants to throw in more suggestions or comment on these as to how to make “All-Pro 2K8” look as close to the NFL as possible ,while still staying legal, add a post
PS - sorry for the long read

I don't think 2k can use the players real #. I remember when ea's basketball game had jordan his # was 00 he looked just like him but they weren't allowed to use his name or #. Also u might be able to edit the guys # and name. But Madden will have Manning and he will look just like him. That's the only thing that will hurt 2k is the players in madden will look just like the real players.

Difference in the EA b-ball situation and Jordan is that they were using the Bulls. I can see how that is a legal matter when you have a player on the bulls with number 23 but not his name. I remember correctly they made his #99 or something like that but had the same look and stats of Jordan.
So in essence if 2k is making a game. and not using the NFL owned team name of the Colts, they can make a team called the Indy Racers or whatever and put simply #18 and not be held to any legal trouble.
Sure 2k won't have the "real players" and that has been proven, but the fact is that people won't care if they don't look exactly like the player. if they can make a dark skin QB, in Tennessee and give him the number 10. I think I can have fun knowing who he is.

Well if that's the case. Why can't Fightnight make a guy look like Tyson?

If anything 2K could look into NFL players numbers just so we can then edit and replicate their NFL counterpart... it's really just a matter on how considerate 2K is going to be to those of us who plan on editing the game towards real life... and remeber player ratings are going to be real important too or else we're going to end up spending a lot of time editing that ourselves.. cause if they make a San Diego team whose running back is one of the worst in the league.. oh boy that just would make me have to take a look at how every one elses ratings are

That's a good point! if 2k does make LT suck that would really hurt big time. Another edge to EA.

I'm pretty sure they can't use the players names OR numbers. I'm also pretty sure they can't use the same jersey colors.
I don't care about a cheap NFL rip-off, I want a deep generic league with different play-styles and amazing gameplay/graphics.

Really? It's nice you could join the 2K forum and talk non-stop about Madden and fill us in on all the details about Madden that nobody had any idea about.

Another edge to EA.
The only edge EA and Madden has ever had over 2K football is the case it comes in - solid plastic; easy to access; convenient storage size...
Er, wait a minute. 2K football had that as well come to think of it. Oops, there goes their one big edge and advantage, sorry.

im pretty sure there is nothing wrong with giving the players the correct numbers. and if it cant be done it still wouldnt be hard to change them, people would just have to figure it out, and im sure there will be about a million walkthroughs on gamefaqs to help everyone out.
the only thing that cant be done is the uniforms cant be exactly the same. all the logos would have to be added, which can be done.
has anyone played the winning eleven series? they have fully customizable uniforms which allow you to add logos that you draw yourself. and that game was on ps2 so im sure its easy for 360 and ps3.
the stadiums would be hard also, not sure what can be done about that. but good point about the stadiums being used for other events. just buy the license on the stadiums used for concerts and things like that. lol
players i would think could look just like the real life players, whats wrong with that? as long as there name isnt on it.
this game is gonna kick ***, and i think it will mostly just show people how good the next-gen gameplay can be. by the time the license is expired with EA, everyone will be wanting this the 2k series

I'm all for 2K and am going to get this game... but people would be ignorant in thinking that Madden having the NFL license is not an advantage to them, despite what sub-par game they produce,... true there are gamers out there that have a preference to just have a good football simulation and 2K will deliver that.. unfortunatly to the common consumer they want to play with the NFL and it's unfortunate cause this will be reflected in sales... and in the future the people who are not in the know.. are going to see How Madden sells and how it is supported by their NFL and come to a hasty conclusion that it is the superior football sim.... it's sad and i wish it were different... but it feels all too true.

Now that i think more of it i dont see why stadiums can't be used.. or at least why some of them can't be used.... 2K has the rights to MLB and they use the Stadium in Miami for the Florida Marlins in their MLB game.. and this is the same stadium the Miami Dolphins use.. same thing with Oakland A's and Oakland Raiders

do u think that announcers will recognize players name like Favre, Manning, or Tomlinson and that if u change the team names will they say the name

Well from a legal stand point (total guess).. i could see this being allowed to slide.. EA does this in it's NCAA games... if you edit your players thier names will be announced.. and their saying names of college students that aren't allowed to be in the game....so why can't 2K say names of players they're not allowed to from the NFL... all 2K would have to do i suppose is put a whole bunch of default names in their edit players list... much like if you play NHL and are trying to create (or edit from classic teams) Mario Lemuix you could pick out his name from the list and announcers will say it.. i suppose thats all 2K would have to do.. good thought .. lets hope it happens

yeah but alot of the harecore Madden loyalist are even ****ed at the latest edition of madden. so expect to see a switch over in mass droves. - the timing is perfect for 2K8 to strike licenses or no licenses. people wanna see a REAL NEXT GEN football game.

I can think of 4 teams' helmets that can maybe be replicated almost perfectly, without getting 2K in hot water.
I don't think the horns on the Rams' helmets are trademarked. If they are, a whole bunch of high schools and colleges could be sued. Gameday 2004 had the Rams horns helmet as a type of helmet for create a team, and I don't think they'd be allowed to do that if it were trademarked.
The Chargers lightning bolt helmet was also included as a create-a-team helmet style in Gameday 2004.
The Cowboys star - can a star be trademarked?
The Browns - no helmet logo at all - nuff said.

If 2K series can make their game like Winning Eleven series in Soccer (which also competes with Fifa series by EA) I believe APF2K8 will be a great success :)

I dont understand which madden game you are playing? because the madden that i have is madden 07 for ps3 and 360 and peyton manning does not look like the "real" peyton manning, the ea manning looks more like a middle linebacker from nfl blitz... and he has the complete WRONG FACE MASK and oh yeah, YOU CANT EDIT ROSTERS???!?!?!?!?!! what kinda lame as effort is that ea??? we've had editable rosters and facemasks since the days of the ps one, but now on a system that is a thousand times stronger (ps3, 360) you REMOVE SIMPLE FEATURES??? i have to ask WHY??? thats something 2k would not do, and i cant wait to play their new game...
so, as far as you saying madden has a advantage here or their, just zip it man, nobody on this site gives a damn about that garbage!!!

a lot of people are saying that the NFL look doesn't matter... this is fine if that is your prefrence and you just want a great simulation... 2K can be succesful in the market.. but even you guys have to admit that if the game can be edited to emulate the NFL it would help it's sales alot... we're all huge fans of 2K and we want to bring over even more fans.. now don't you think that along with 2Ks awsome gameplay if it can be customized to mirror the NFL it can help bring over casual NFL football game fans or those ****ed off Madden fans that feel like they have no other choice cause they want the NFL in their game... Being able to tweak the game enough to resemble the NFL definatly can not hurt the game it could only make it's game stronger... we can't just think of some of our own personal preferences ... we have to sometimes look at things from a bussiness and majority of consumers view

I think/hope that 2k Sports makes a move like the Winning Eleven(Soccer) done by Konami. Where u have an edite option and u can edite everything from Uniforms to Logos. Where u can create ur own LOGO from the game. I have edited all the Logos in the soccer game and it was fun. Hell, at the end, i had a great game, fun to look at and it seemed as if Konami had all the right to Fifa. I think 2k should take that aproache and/or atleast consider it.
About the NAMES: What the can do is call the players close the real players name. Like Peyton Manning, then can call him... i dont know. Peyt Aiming. Something that sounds close to his name. The numbers arnt licensed. Maybe im wrong, but im 90% sure they aren't.
STADIUMS: I think they could sign a couple of stadiums here and there. But i think they can sign the rights of other Football stadiums that the NFL Teams dont use and put them in the game.
Thats all i got to say, but the important thing, is to have the option to edit anything in the game the way Konami did to their soccer game which, itself as well is battling for superity with EA's Fifa.

Customization is key here, because we all know that the NFL is king, look at the ratings the NFL gets, it's the biggest american sport. Anything that we can do to bring us closest to NFL authenticity is mandatory. A great feature would be signature QB throwing styles that can be assigned to each qb. From Brady's beautiful fluid pass, to Vick's dart throw, and even Peyton's stiffness, if they could be replicated this would enhance the NFL feel. Remember MADDEN 64? this game had no NFL license, but they did have the NFLPA license, and they used the cities as team names, and they were able to use the uniform colors, no logos etc., but it was acceptable. I think if we could get something similar to the real thing it will beat MADDEN. As for commentary, I would like to see some real announcers, like jim nance, and phil simms, or bryant gumble and kevin harlan. Who would be great is joe buck and aikman. I will be the first in line for this game, I am just a huge NFL guy and would love to see an authentic representation of NFL football, since EA has decided not to go this route.

Of course they can't use the names. But the numbers is another story. How do you think they make the college games. They can't use the names because college has no players association. But nobody can stop them from using whatever numbers they want.
I agree with the other guys, I can live without the actual logos and all that. But if I can edit and have the commentators calling out NFL names then thats tight. All I want is a football game that has the realistic gameplay of NBA 2k.
2K games are alive! Thats whats best. I hate when I play Madden and i'm running down the sideline and my teammates are just standing there. 2K games have the bench and the fans reacting to whats going on. I want that in football!

I think we will have a lot of leeway from the designers to emulate the NFL. I think they will give us options of names to choose from the the announcers have already made sound bites from. If they give us the option to customize the logos like winning eleven then the floodgates will open. I for one know that the fleur-de-lis is not a copyrighted logo for the Saints because its the symbol of N.O. so if that's the case the NFL would be getting sued. I'm not sure about other teams but like mentioned earlier, you can't copyright a star or a particular color but different logos (broncos, panthers, cardinals) you might have a bigger problem. But if they give us the options of a horse, a black cat and a red bird then I don't think there will be that much of a problem. I wonder if we are allowed to make these changes will we be allowed to use them online. It would suck if you make all these changes to your team and then go online and its the default.

Does anybody think that uploading photos to use to edit your teams logo is a realistic and possible idea ? i hear a alot about winning eleven and being able to draw your own logo and thats cool and all but it can get difficult and maybe sloppy. Wouldn't an upload photos option be a bit easier ?

Keep in mind that we will be able to completly customize everything in this game. I can assure u guys of that. I dont think we need to worry.

They should do something like this, but have a literally huge list of names, even if it means the commentators reciting from telephone directorys for days on end lol.

i dont think players will be the problem cus you can just put the number and make players' skill sets accurate and have them run like the counterpart and do the dances and such..
as for names of teams i'd settle for just washington vs. dallas..i don't need the redskins or cowboy names..i know who they are..or just cowboys vs. redskins..you can't copywrite a name..you can trademark it..but cowboys or dallas isn't trademarked ..DALLAS COWBOYS is...you could put #81 out there with exact weight and height as the real one..you can make the stadiums..exactly like the real ones just call fed ex staduim ..washington stadium..the helmet logo's are probably the hardest thing but they can allow you to edit the images with downloadable images saved on 360 harddrive
end of the day ..if you read the last article of game infomer..the NFL has full authority to take back the lic. if need be ..and i think 2k is going to regain the L's...they have built a strong reputation on quality games with oblivion..mlb..nhl..and grand theft at kush games..so i wont be surprised if they just get the L's in the end perhaps make a deal with EA and share the baseball lic. ..sharing the property is good for the nfl and good for gamers it's a win win for everyone...it makes competition..

This is pretty exciting stuff. I've gotten every madden game, but i'm getting sick of them. Problem is that, I do 95% of my gaming on my PC and I doubt They would make a PC version because we'd have that hacked to NFL specs in a week.
Having said that, i think i'd be better at a generic game cause i always get players who i like even if they aren't the best. anyone else have that problem? if i was drafting and trading for a nobody and emotion had nothing to do with it, i'd make way better decisions. thats just me.
