If 2K were to ever produce a College Football game, obviously school names would be tough to work around without the NCAA license. Here is an idea that could get around it.
1. Most College/University names can be broken down into commonly known letters. Instead of "University of Southern California" people say "USC". Now, obviously you couldn't put the letters "USC" in as a programmed team but you COULD create an audio database that does this:
*Have audio of every letter of the alphabet. Then allow users to match the letters up in team editing. So, say I wanted to make Florida State University. I would go into the editing database and select the letters 'F'-'S'-'U'. The announcers would simply repeat this arrangement of letter when announcing the team during the game.
*Some teams like the Notre Dame Fighting Irish would'nt sound right being called "ND". So for teams like this, familiar public domain nicknames could be available in the audio database. For example, Notre Dame could be referred to as the "Golden Domers", and it would be perfectly legal it's public domain.
*For teams that are identified easily by State like "Michigan", "West Virgina", "Minnesota", "Miami", "Florida", or "Texas" (you get the point), the audio database could have these states available to be applied to a team the user creates.
2. Here is how the audio database can make a perfect, smooth linking of names:
First selection slot says: Team name... user selects "Ohio"
Second selection slot says: School type... user selects "State"
Once both are selected, the announcers will say during the games, "Ohio-State."
Downside is that most of the team animal and mascot names couldn't be used like, Fighting Irish, or Buckeyes. But that would just be something to deal with because of the circumstances.
... This will need some more thought, but I just figured I'd put it out there.
