On defense, how many times has a WR cought the ball behind you and you are in front of him and he zig zags causing you to eventually commit to the wrong direction? On defense there should be like a button modifier to go into a back pedal and face the runner from all angles. Kind of like the L-trigger function in NBA 2K7. That way you can wait and strafe for a ball carrier and square up and dive instead of just running full speed in their direction and potentially missing. The advantages of squaring up would be surer tackles and the disadvantage would be that you move slower holding down that button.
Also defenders often just dive full speed in one direction as the runner goes by, it would be nice to see them turn their heads and try to reach at the offensive player as their momentum carries them in the other direction. Possibly grabbing some jersey and slowing the guy down. Some nice cloth pulling would add so much to the realism, and how often do shoulder pads pop out in the NFL after a guy gets tackled?
On offense, in 2K5 they had it to where if you were getting wrapped up you could power through it by tapping A. IMO it would be nice to expand on that a little. Like for example instead of just timing stiff arms, you could time them as well as fight off the guy; and as the defender has you wrapped up he could also tap the tackle button and kind of like outfight you and drag you down. The game within the game. Afcourse this would be triggered in open field one on one tackles mainly; it would suck doing it for every single tackle.
You know how madden has lead blocker, which is set up pre-play, I always thought that would work best on the fly during a play. Like lets say your the running back and your going wide right and there is a lineman running ahead of you, how nice would it be to get behind him and press a button that has the RB grab the back of his jersey a-la Priest Holmes and while you two become "connected" you can steer him into defenders and break away automatically once he gets engaged, better yet you make him dive into the defender.
Just a few random thoughts. HIRE ME 2K!!
