I'm starting a Michigan State Spartans legacy that will last for multiple seasons as I try to build around strong future recruiting classes. I considered doing one as a coach (a la moving up the coaching ladder to higher schools) but I felt that that particular choice would have drawn a small fan base as nobody REALLY wants to see a NC A&T legacy morph into an Indiana State one. I hope that with persistent and effective recruiting I will bring in freshman classes that can compete for National Championships for years to come. Basic point being, I will be staying at MSU for as long as the legacy lasts.

The Michigan State Spartans pregame show is brought to you by...http://www.save30store.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000005/quiznos.jpg

Hello everybody, and welcome to the Spartan pregame show here on FSN Detroit, your only home for everything Detroit sports. Today we are in Chapel Hill as the #5 North Carolina Tar Heels host the #25 Michigan State Spartans in the season opener for both teams. The last time these teams met in the regular season was in 1999, when Michigan State, led by Morris Peterson, defeated #2 UNC in their home opener by a ten point margin, winning 86-76. (MSU-UNC 1999 clips here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_Cnhvt78d8)) A player that I believe resembles Morris Peterson is Drew Neitzel, the Shooting Guard sensation for Michigan State. He obviously has the capability to score in bunches, and I believe that in order for MSU to escape with the upset today, he must do just that. Before we went on air I spoke to Spartan Head Coach Tom Izzo, and he stated that in order to beat the incredibly deep Tar Heels they must throw constant traps and zones at the Heels and not turn the ball over.

Coach Izzo's Keys to the Game
1. Don't let Wright and Hansbrough beat us on the glass, box out HARD
2. Give Neitzel good looks at the basket, set tough screens, and provide crisp passes
3. Get back on defense, prevent easy Tar Heel shots
4. And most importantly...do NOT turn the ball over in bunches, maintain composure, and keep the UNC crowd out of the game

Now, the Players to Watch For brought to you by http://adweek.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/doritos_1.gif brand chips

PF Brandan Wright of UNC vs. SG Drew Neitzel of MSU

While the savvy Neitzel has plenty of experience in big game situations, the freshman Wright will play in his first collegiate game and must provide decent numbers for UNC to win the ballgame.

Game Time: 8 pm ET, Doors open at 6:00.
Tickets: None available, SOLD OUT

Today we are in Chapel Hill as the fifth ranked Tar Heels will host the Spartans of Michigan State. We are sure to have an excellent game on our hands here as both teams open their seasons tonight. [/OVER-ENTHUSIASM] Well you have two great teams squaring off here in a fierce battle of ACC vs. Big Ten. Okay Dickie V, its that time again, who do you have on your star watch tonight? [/OVER-ENTHUSIASM] You know for the Spartans that its going to be SG Drew Neitzel who needs to have a great game, and for the Tar Heels I'm going to say that diaper-dandy Brandan Wright will be the deciding factor for UNC as MSU doesn't have enough front-line bigs to stop Hansbrough and Wright. (Brandan Wright short warm-up clip here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1UlpC2JN5s))

Spartans shock Heels in season-opening victory

Led by a late 1st half outburst and Drew Naymick's 23 points, the Michigan State Spartans upset the fifth ranked North Carolina Tar Heels today. Danny Green was on fire early for the Heels, as they jumped out to a quick lead and extended it to 11 at one point. The appearance of Idong Ibok sparked a comeback as he provided 3 crucial blocks and 4 points. Keeping them in the game, Ibok was replaced by Drew Naymick who suddenly became a ball-hawk on the press and finished the half with 5 steals and 9 points, all of which came on the 1-2-2 press. Just before the completion of the half Drew Neitzel stroked a three to push the Spartan lead to 7, and in the process set off Heels coach Roy Williams, who apparently screamed at his players in a timeout "DO YOU GUYS EVEN WANT TO WIN?!?!?! WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS TEAM!?!?! GO OUT THERE AND STOP PLAYING LIKE A BUNCH OF SISSIES!!!!!" Aforementioned Danny Green hit a 3 with just under 10 seconds to go, cutting the MSU lead to only 3, but Neitzel finger-rolled a layup in as time expired. When ESPN's own Erin Andrews attempted to interview Williams, he stated "no comment" before a question was even asked and sprinted to the locker room. He reportedly brought the team into the film room, and popped in a dvd of the 2005 NCAA Champion Tar Heels. He bellowed, "THAT TEAM HAD PASSION! YOU GUYS HAVE NO PASSION! NOW LET'S GO OUT THERE AND WIN THIS (expletive) GAME!!!" (See 2005 UNC video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anGObXiQr8c&mode=related&search=)) Despite Williams' intensity, the Spartans maintained their lead and proved to the world in the process just how good of a team they really can be. Naymick finished with 23 points, Travis Walton with 20, and Drew Neitzel with 16. The Spartans shot 9-10 from the line and an incredible 69% from the field. The Heels tried valiantly to make a comeback, but the Spartans always had an answer on this night, and would not be denied the victory. Spartans coach Tom Izzo looked thrilled after the win, and said that his team would not give in when the Heels were dominating in the first half, and he is extremely proud of them for that. The Spartans will head back to East Lansing tonight and will face off against defending national champion and first ranked Florida Gators at 8 pm ET. The first 10,000 fans will recieve a free IZZONE t-shirt complements of the Spartan Bookstore. http://store.fansonly.com/marketplace/store/Vendor193/images/21038471-s.jpg
