Hi all. New here.
I just bought MLB 2K7 for the PS2. I knew going in it wouldn't look as great as the PS3 or 360 versions because- hello, common sense? So there's that out of the way right now. I do not own a 360 or PS3 because right now I feel very intelligent and find paying $600+ for a video game console is ridiculous.
Now then.
The last baseball game I've played was EA's MVP '05, particularly the PC version where updates and customisation is much, MUCH easier. Therefore I cannot compare this to 2K6 or The Show franchise (though I'm now curious about The Show 2007- more on that in a moment).
First off, lets get the irrelevants out of the way. What is NOT IMPORTANT in this game are player ratings, non-MLBPA guys, batting orders, pitching rotations, etc etc etc because all of these matters are easily alterable. If a fellow is rated too high, just go and edit him. The player editing screens are very easy to navigate and quite intuitive. As far as music goes, who on earth could possibly hate a game just for that?
To me, what IS relevant in a game is gameplay first and foremost. Since I'm used to EA titles, the fluidity of the controls surprised me and is taking massive getting used to. Hitting is pretty smooth and simple, but baserunning- in particular stealing- is confusing.
I'm not entirely sure if its possible to double steal 2nd & 3rd or pull off a delayed double steal of home with runners on 1st and 3rd (I know this is a rather esoteric play post-deadball era but modern teams still do it sometimes and if they do it should thus be in the game).
All that said, the game looks TERRIBLE, even by old-gen standards. None of the players look real or have correct motions and everything has a very odd, very annoying all-pervading gray tint to it, causing everything to be muted and washed-out. I don't think there's a single vibrant color in the game, which when compared (especially) to my years of MVP '05 play is quite irritating.
Basically, I can't recommend the game, but I can't righteously slam it with indignation, either. Its not strictly a ripoff for $30 because the games can be fun to play casually. However, I'll be waiting for reviews of the new Show game to see what people say.
If anyone has any questions, I'll try to answer them. Thanks!
