Bison get caught of guard\
The bison were in control in the first half up 44-34 but a second half collapse did them in. We clearly were outcoached in the second half ,but this will never happen again said coach swanson. The loss eliminated them from the 2k sports college hoops classic and made the Bison 1-1(0-0). J.Goodman finished with 22pts, 3 reb on 8-16 shooting, A. Nava finished with 22 pts 4 reb on 8-19 shooting.

He also addressed the turnover issues of Russell Doss saying," If he doesnt get these turnovers under control i will have to plug ellis (vignale) into the starting lineup." D.Powers finished with 20pts and 12 rebs, ending his cold streak of poor play. A.Nava chpped in with 16pts 5rebs 5ast and 6 stls.

An inconsistent Howard team gets handled by Drexel
The Bison 3-3(0-0) continued to be inconsistent and its anyones guess how good this team really is. Said coach Swanson, "It was a night where we were very tenative, no one was seemed to want to make a play. Everyone was looking for the next guy to pick up the slack and that just can't happen at all. I'm not pointing the finger at anybody but Russ(Russell Doss) has to become more aggressive in the offense." The starting point guard on the team Russell finished 0 points on 0-4 shooting. Leading scorer Jaime Goodman had an uncharacteristically low 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting, and Alton Nava struggled all day to find his shot, finishing with 10 points on 4 of 10 shooting.

The Bison Win a close one in conference opener 92-83
In a game where the two teams were tied at halftime, and tied at the end of regulation, a 19 point ot period secured the victory for the bison. "I wasn't feeling any pressure out there, I just made plays ", said freshman guard Russell Doss, who finished with 13 points and 9 ast on 4 of 6 shooting. Coach Swanson was elated saying, " It's hard for us to lose when Jamie plays like that." Jamie Goodman finished with 34 points on 13 of 20 shooting and was unguardable throughout the game. The freshman 6'2" streaky shooter is the type of player who can keep Howard in any game when he catches fire. The bison improved to 4-3 (1-0)

The bison 5-3(1-0) continued their hot shooting winning by 20. "Russ had a big game, point blank," said Coach Swanson. "I'll take 25pts and 8ast from him any night. We ran the offense just how I designed it, I expect nothing less than this each night." J.Goodman finished with 19 pts, 3ast, 4stls, Alton Nava added 15pts 4ast and 2 stl. The next will be versus Howard's main rival Hampton in Virginia.

Recruiting

What Howard needs:
1) Howard needs more talented players that can compete with the bigger school because I don't play the games, I coach them.
2) Post players: We have no post players rated higher than 67 and that is the main reason for our inconsistent play. We usually get little production out of the paint, and we have no shot blocker.
3) A back up sf: Our backup small fowar mccullough is a senior and is a horrible shooter anyway (.242 fg%)
4) Another PG: R. Dos is the man, but we need a guard to share the ball handling duties with him because he tends to be careless with the ball (3.3 topg) and plays horrible against elite talent (12 turnovers against UMD)
5) Scoring of the bench: I would love to use my bench more, but we have very little depth of the bench, and it tends to cost us when we play elite teams.

thoughts: we are third on his list but we are his only scholarship offer, interest in all 3 teams is in the low 70s and I think we will get him at the end of the season

we are also recruiting a 4* international center, but little is known about his skills..................

Mid season team evaluation

Alton Nava has been the best player on the team. He consistently make big shots, can guard any postition but center, and his 6'7" allows him to help with rebounding, this athletic star has a bright future. Jamie Goodman has hit a cold streak lately but is really the best scorer on the team. Its a shame that he doesnt make other players better(1.7 apg). His only agenda when he is on the floor is to shoot, early and often. Russell Doss is the conductor that makes this team go. (5.9 apg). He is easily the best pg in the meac and as of late has become a scoring option(12.2ppg). Abe Lett defines inconsistent. One night he can be amazing and have 15and 10, and then the next night he is a nonfactor. He needs to prove he belongs in the game, because if Howard recruits that international 4* center then Lett will be spending major minutes on the bench. Daron Powers has been nothing short of a dissaointment. He is largely improductive in the time he is on the floor and is only in the game because Coach Swanson is loyal to the players he recruited. Deon Butch is a solid post player of the bench and realistically should start over Daron but I start my guys, the guys I recruited. Ellis is a solid guard of the bench but he allows Maynard to handle the ball too much when the second team is in the game and should take charge more. Maynard takes bad shoots and shoots a horrible fg%(.314). The only reason he still gets playing time is because there are no other options of the bench. This will all change when D.J gets up here next fall. Vidal takes such horrible shots, doesnt like to follow the offense and is in Coach Swansons doghouse. He only plays due to lack of depth but is is a senior so he wont be my problem ext year. Takayo Pekkola is 7'2" and a good rebounder but a bad player. A walk on who plays hard, but on the defensive side of the ball is a no show. Not very skilled at all offensively.Lowell is a junior pf who lost his playing time to takayo because he is not a very good rebounder or defender.

The Bison Beatdown Eastern Shore
Tonight in Burr Gym the Howard Bison 17-5(10-1) continued their domination of the MEAC with an impressive 109-86 win over University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
"I finally found my touch and I felt confident out there," said freshman sg Jamie Goodman after a 28 point 7assist performance on 12 of 23 shooting. "Coach has been getting in my ear about not getting others involved so I made it a point of emphasis today."
"The key in tonights win was our ball movement, said Coach Swanson, " Russell had 11 assists, Jamie you can't ask for much more out your guards."
Tonight the MEAC was put on notice that if another team doesn't get hot, Howard will run away with the conference title.

Bison Struggle in Carolina
The bison 17-6(10-2) of howard University today got exposed as a poor defensive team with streaky shooters. "I'm ashamed of our performance, Alton showed up but the rest of the team took the game off."

The final 78-73 does not show how lopsided of a game this really was. The bison trailed 42-19 at the half, but outscored NC A&T 54 to 36 in the second.

"We have to be more consistent on offense every night," said freshman shooting guard Jamie Goodman, who finished with 12 points on 4-17 shooting.

"If my guys are serious about winning this conference there needs to be a total change in attitude from this point foward," said coach Swanson. "I don't care who plays, I gonna get the guys who give maximum effort every night on the floor."
