John Gentry-A Legacy

“Earlier today, Seth Gentry was named the new head coach of the Golden State Warriors. Gentry’s coaching career includes two Kentucky state championships with Taylor County High School (Campbellsville, Kentucky), one NAIA national championship (Indiana Wesleyan), and two NCAA Div. 1 tournament appearances with Eastern Carolina University. Now, his career has jumped tiers as Don Nelson has been replaced with the rookie coach in the NBA, Seth Gentry. The Warriors are currently 1-3. In other news-”

John Gentry flipped off the TV and reclined on the couch. He and his wife had just gotten back from his brother, Seth’s press conference, where he was officially announced as the coach of Golden State. He was a big time coach now, while John was still a successful, but little-known high school coach. His school was currently 12-1 and considered the best team in Utah.

He then remembered that he could get Utah news here, so he flipped on the channel. Sports was just coming on, and that was just what he wanted to see.

“In other news, coach Reid of the Southern Utah University T-Birds has been released after a horrendous 6-21 season. No word on a replacement yet, but Athletic Director Chenee' Williams had this to say when asked who they were looking at:

“We’re looking at mainly the high-school coaches throughout the state. There’s definitely a good coach at Cedar Grove High.”

John stopped. He backed that up on the DVR. Yes, she said Cedar Grove. “That’s my school!” he exclaimed. He jumped up off the couch and hopped up and down in the floor like a ten-year old who just got a new bike for Christmas. His wife, Layla Gentry, ran into the room.

“What’s the matter?” she asked, sounding worried.

John grabbed her and hugged her. “Southern Utah’s looking at me to be their next coach!”

“You?!”

“Me!”

And then, they both proceeded to hop around in the middle of the floor.

John had been sitting by the phone for what seemed like days. Williams had been on the news again. She said they had a coach they were ready to offer the job to. John thought it had to be him. Finally, his cell phone rang. He quickly flipped it open. “Hello?”

“Hello, coach Gentry?”

“Yes, I’m the coach.”

“Great. This is Chenee Williams, the Athletic Director at Southern Utah University. I’m calling to formally ask you to accept the coaching job for the T-Birds. I’ve read over your resume and really like what I see. And, Cedar Grove High is 12-1. I think that’s very good, considering the T-Birds were 6-21 last season. A winning season would be greatly appreciated. So, will you accept the job? 500k per year for 2 years?”

“Yes! Yes, I accept!”

“Great! So, if you could, please bring your family by the campus tomorrow morning. I’ll meet you guys for lunch in the cafeteria. I’m sure you know your way to the school, right?”

“Yes, I do. I’ll meet you about, what, 11:00?”

“Sure. See you then. And, bring your family!”

You oughta try it. It's fun. You get to move around on the sidelines, in first-person view. And, you get to make substitutions, call plays, and change your press settings right there on the spot. Also, it makes you appreciate your players more, since you can't directly control if they jump in front of a pass, or if they hit a shot. Plus, it helps for when you play games, since they take shots you might not. And, if they go in consistently, then you have one more weapon for when you play.

Coach Gentry prowled the sidelines until his legs got sore, and he finally sat down and smiled. This was midnight madness, not the NCAA. He threw his arms behind his head and leaned back and watched the show. The red team had gone up by 15 and his white team was struggling to get back into it. Two things stuck out to him: Rebounding and three pointers. They needed work in those areas. He planned on having an immediate effect on this school. He wanted people to know, Southern Utah can win games, too.

If he wanted a win against in-state rival Utah in their first game, he would need some treys and rebounds, especially on the offensive end. He looked at his roster, all of whom were on the floor (or at least all of them in the rotation). The tallest player was Brad Kanis, a 7’2 center from California. He looked at Brad’s high-school stat sheet. “A reserve? A 7’2 center as a RESERVE? Who was this kid’s high-school coach?” Coach made a mental note to talk to Kanis after the scrimmage.

After the intra-squad scrimmage was over, Coach Gentry tracked down Kanis before he left the locker room. “Hey, Brad!”

Kanis turned and looked at Coach. Immediately coach saw something. “This kid really wants to play.” He thought.

“Yeah, coach?”

“Uh, right! Brad, would you like to have more of a part in the rotation?”

Kanis’s eyes brightened. “Of course I would.”

“Alright then, consider yourself sixth man for center.”

“Really? Great, thanks coach!” Kanis smiled and headed for his dorm.

Coach made a mental check. “Got a center.”

Reporter: Coach, are you disappointed in your guys with this?

Coach: Are you kidding? Of course not. It’s the first game of the season, against a team that’s better than us. Don’t worry, once they get used to playing together, they’ll start winning games.

Reporter: Coach, you couldn’t help but notice Brad Kanis in the starting lineup. Any comment on why he’s in the starting five.

Coach: Because he rebounds the basketball, and he’s not afraid to get physical. And, not many teams have someone tall enough to win the tip against someone who’s 7’2. Now, I have to get back to the hotel room and pack my things. So, if you’ll let me go, goodbye.

SUU survives against Denver in thriller, 107-97, 2OT

Reporter: Quite a game, coach. How do you think your guys performed overall tonight?

Coach: I think they did very well. Anytime you win a double overtime game you feel good.

Reporter: Coach, you said that once your guys got used to playing together, they would start winning games. Do you think they’ve started to get used to playing with each other?

Coach: Yeah, I do. Like I said, to win in double overtime, you have to have chemistry.

Reporter: Of course, Dax Crum the hero of this one when he hit that three-pointer from the corner at the end of overtime to tie the game. Did you have anything special to say to him after the game?

Coach: I just told him it was a nice shot. And it was. Not a lot of guys can hit a shot like that when they’re fatigued, and under pressure like he was.

Reporter: Do you think this is gonna be a trend with this team? Being able to hit shots when they have to?

Coach: *laughs* I hope so.

Coach Gentry stepped down from the podium. He was happy with his team today. He loved winning in overtime games, and today he’d won a double overtime game. Even better, Dax had come out in this one, and shown just what he can do. Bobby President, Coach Gentry’s assistant coach stepped up to him.

“Any thoughts?” asked President.

“Yeah. Do you think Dax will be able to hit big shots consistently?”

“Maybe. He’ll have to be put in some more big game situations before we know for sure.”

“He’s a senior, right?”

“Yeah, he is.”

“We need to get started recruiting another guard. Try to get a good one.”

“Alright, sure.”

SUU wins for the second time in as many games against Boise State in runaway, 48-27

SUU shot only 30% from the field, but still blew out heavily Boise State, who shot just 22%.

And now, we go live to the post game press conference:

Reporter: Coach, how do you feel about tonight’s win?

Coach: Well, pretty good. I mean, we can’t shoot 30% and win consistently. We got lucky that Boise State only shot 22%.

Reporter: Coach, you didn’t shoot well from three. Only 1/15. In the Denver game, you only shot 5/20 from outside. Do you see this becoming a problem in the future?

Coach: It can. Nuru’s been working on his outside shot, and I think that once he gets that shot down pat, we’ll be a lot more dangerous from out there.

Reporter: Right, coach. Thanks.

The T-Birds shot a blistering 78% from the floor, had 40 points in the paint, out-rebound the Vandals by 18, and were led by Nurudeen Adopoju's 24 points (on 8/10 shooting, 6/8 from three) to a 36 point victory over the Idaho Vandals.

Reporter: Coach, obviously, this is a nice win for your home opener. Any thoughts about how your guys performed overall?

Coach: Um, real good? *laughs* Really, we played well, they didn't. When that happens, you win by 36.

Reporter: *laughs* Right. Obviously, you got a big lift from Nuru. How big was his impact overall?

Coach: Oh, I can't even tell you! I said last time that he was improving his three-point shot. I think he's done that. He only missed two this game.

Steve Barnes hit three critical free throws with 3 seconds left to seal the victory as Southern Utah beat heavily favored Brigham Young on the road.

Reporter: First of all, nice win, coach.

Coach: Thank you.

Reporter: Coach, do you think that if this team makes the NCAA tourney, or even the NIT, that they'll be dangerous?

Coach: If we continue to pull out close games, definately. I think that we have some chemistry going now, and if Brad keeps working on that behind the back pass, our inside game will become more dominant.

Reporter: Coach, when you coached high school ball, your teams were generally perimiter teams. Any comment on whether or not this team will become a perimiter team?

Coach: I don't know. That remains to be seen. If Nurudeen gets his outside jumper down, then yes. If he doesn't, then we'll have to see what Steve, Dax, and David (Marek) can do.

Reporter: That's all, coach.

T-Birds Make the NCAA!

Finally! The T-Birds have won the Mid-Con Conference Tournament, with a win over Missouri-Kansas City in the championship. This marks the second time ever that SUU made the NCAA, and the first time since '01. Coach John Gentry said he wanted to make an immediate impact, and boy has he!

The T-Birds finish with a school record, 25 wins, and a record of 25-5 (12-2). Coach Gentry had this to say after the UMKC win:

"Well, I'm obviously happy that we won the tournament. Now, we just gotta go out there and get some NCAA wins. Just book it, Southern Utah WILL be your '07 Champions."

Pretty confident statement. I sure hope he's right.

Most Improved Player '07

#25 Brad Kanis

Brad started the season on the bench. And, since he won the tip in the first overtime of the Denver game earlier, he's been in the starting five. He averages 7.7 ppg and 5.0 rpg.

John Gentry Interview!

Yes, we have an interview with coach John Gentry, who's obviously a cult hero to T-Birds fans now.

T-Bird Insider: First of all, coach, thanks for talking to us, and congratulations on a great season.

Gentry: Glad to be here, and thanks.

TBI: Well, obviously, these T-Birds got the second ever NCAA bid for the school, and the highest ever seed, at a six. How did you make such a turn-around. I mean, last year we were 6-21.

JG: I can't really say. From working with these guys, I don't see how they haven't already won a championship. They're so talented, I don't see how a coach could be THAT bad, to go 6-21 with guys like these.

TBI: Really? Most people noticed last year that the T-Birds weren't able to pull out close games. Now, all of sudden, you come in, and nobody beats us in close games. Like when Steve Barnes stole the ball and laid it in to beat Western Illinois, or Brad Kanis' three point play to beat Oral Roberts. What do you tell your guys when your down by one and the other team has the ball?

JG: Usually I just tell them to leave it up to Steve, or Nuru. They're our most capable of making a big steal and kicking to someone like Brad or Dax for a shot. Or, they can take a shot.

TBI: Right, right. Most people have noticed the outstanding play of Nuru. He's the league's leading scorer, averaging about 17 points a game. How? He averaged six points last year.

JG: When I came in, Nuru didn't want to take a shot. I just told him to fire if he gets open, and as a result, he scored 36 one time, and he's averaging 17.

TBI: Well, unfortunately that's all the time we've got. But, again, thanks coach.

Nurudeen Adepoju Interview

The leading scorer in the NCAA, and the record holder for most points in a game for the T-Birds, Nuru Adepoju.

T-Bird Insider: Hi, Nuru.

Nuru: Hello.

TBI: Well, how does it feel to be the leading scorer in the NCAA AND the record holder for most points in a game for the T-Birds?

NA: It feels good.

TBI: How did you score 53? I think we're all curious.

NA: I can't really explain it. I hit my first few shots and then coach told me to shoot if I get open. When I got 31 in the first half, I knew that this was gonna be a big night for me.

TBI: When you tied the record at 49, and then you went out, what did the coach say to you?

NA: He just said to shoot it anytime I got the ball. When I hit that lay-up, I saw him smile, and I thought I was gonna go out, but then I saw them inbound the ball, and I had to go for it, so I stole it and laid it up.

TBI: That's all the time we have for now, Nuru. We'll see you around.

T-Birds Tournament Update

Steve Barnes gets big steal as T-Birds(6) survive against Louisville(3), 75-74

The Round of 32 began with a matchup between sixth seeded Southern Utah and three seed, Louisville. Southern Utah went up by as much as 15 with four minutes left, but Louisville crept back into it, drawing to within six on a Terrence Williams trey with 2:05 to go. David Padgett would get a big block on the other end against Steve Barnes, and Jerry Smith would hit a trey to cut the deficit to three. When David Padgett gave Louisville the lead, 74-73, with 0:45 to go, coach John Gentry called a timeout to set up one last play. Steve Barned kicked the ball to Nurudeen Adepoju, who took it inside and shot a layup over Padgett, and missed. Padgett rebounded the ball with 35 seconds left.

John Gentry didn't sit down, though. Louisville coach, Rick Pitino never looked away. Both knew what the T-Birds could do when they were down one. When Terrence Williams passed the ball to Edgar Sosa, Nurudeen Adepoju jumped in front of the pass and picked it off. He fed a long outlet pass to Steve Barnes, who was racing Williams to the other bucket. Barnes made the catch and laid it in with 24 seconds left to give the T-Birds the lead, 75-74.

At the other end, Terrence Williams missed an open trey with 2 seconds left to seal the victory for the T-Birds.

The next Texas Western?

In April, 1966, Texas Western University beat powerhouse Kentucky in the National Championship, to complete what has been called the biggest upset in sports history. Many are now wondering if Southern Utah could do the same. The Final Four is set, and the T-Birds are in, beating Georgetown, 90-78.

Georgetown never could get it going from downtown, hitting only 4-23. However, they hung around far longer than coach Gentry would've liked. He had this to say after the game:

"Well, we obviously would've liked to have closed the deal earlier than twenty seconds to go."

Coach Gentry Interview

We have another interview with coach Gentry, now that he's in the Final Four.

TBI: Welcome back, coach Gentry, and congrats of the Final Four berth.

JG: Thank you.

TBI: How did you have such a huge impact here immediatly? We go 6-21, and all of a sudden, we're 30-5 and in the Final Four.

JG: Like I said before, the talent was there, all I had to do was let THEM know.

TBI: Well, you've certainly done that. Now, despite being such a huge figure in Cedar City, we don't really know a lot about your background. Maybe, you could give us some info?

JG: It's no big secret. I was born in Green County, Kentucky, in 1979. Married Layla in '99.
I got my first coaching job at Green County High. I led the Dragons to a state championship, then came to Cedar City in '01. And, the rest is history.

T-Birds Tournament Update

T-Birds magical run ends in championship game

T-Birds win! T-Birds win! The T-Birds beat the overall top seed, Florida, in the championship game earlier today, 87-66 to win the national championship. This was the T-Birds first championship, as they successfully pulled off the biggest upset in school history.

The game was tightly contested all the way through, and the T-Birds led in a suprisingly low-scoring half, 33-31 at halftime. With the game tied at 47 with 9:48 to go, and the T-Birds hitting only hitting 4-15 threes to that point, Steve Barnes let one fly from about thirty feet and all of Cedar City held its breath. SWISH Nothing but net. From that shot, the T-Birds exploded on a 20-2 run, and led, 67-49 after Nurudeen Adepoju swished through a fadeaway three from over the backboard.

From that point, John Gentry took the starters out and let his second unit go in. They played the rest of the game. Possibly the fans' favorite sequence was when Swaney Cooper did a windmill jam, then stole the ball, and fed it to Marcus Carson, who swished an NBA three.

We caught up with Coach Gentry after the game(full team interview below). He had this to say:

"We knew we would have to come out firing. We didn't. Luckily for us, neither did they. Champions '07!"

Billy Donovan Interview

We caught up with Florida coach Billy Donovan after the game, and got him to agree to an interview.

T-Birds Insider: Coach Donovan, first of all, thank you for speaking to us. And, we're sorry for the loss tonight.

Billy Donovan: Thank you.

TBI: Coach Donovan, what di you tell your team coming into this game. Obviously, they'd been here before.

BD: *laughs* I just told them that they would have to be caqreful not to underestimate Southern Utah, just because they're Mid-Con. I told them, they made the championship, and have just as much a chance of beating us, as we have of beating them.

TBI: Well, coach, that's all the time we have for now. Again, good luck next year.

BD: Thank you.

T-Birds: *cheers*

NA: Thank you.

TBI: Congratulations to you, as well, coach Gentry.

T-Birds: *cheers*

JG: Thank you, guys. These guys deserve this. If there's one thing I wanted to do when I came, it was give Steve and Justin and the guys rings to go out with.

TBI: Well, you've done that. We'll let you guys celebrate now.

T-Birds Offseason Update

Coach Gentry chosen to head All-Stars!

Coach Gentry has been chosen to coach the Western Highschool All-Stars, in this Saturday's game. We'll be bringing you a recap of that game as soon as it is over.

Coach Gentry Press Conference

Coach Gentry took questions from the press after Sunday's Championship.

On Winning the Championship: How do you think it feels? It feels great! Nobody expected us to be here right now. Actually, nobody expected us to make the tournament. And now, here we are, with a 32-5 record, and a National Championship.

On the Possibility of leaving: No, not this year. Maybe next year, if I get a good offer, but not this year. I don't see leaving the year after winning it all.

When asked what his dream job is: Wow. Probably either coaching UCLA, or Kentucky. I would really like to go back to Kentucky and coach. Either at EKU, WKU, or UK.

Coach J here from the EIU dynasty. Thanks for following my legacy. I'll be following yours. Seems like you have great success so far. I'm sure the major programs will come after you soon.

I skipped like the middle three pages. I see you went to playing the games because there is no way coaching a game that you would score 53 with a guy and avg 7 steals a game. But anyways nice run. I think you should try and get some sliders to make it more realistic for you.

Right. Only once have I EVER scored that much with one guy. And the only reason he averages seven steals is because my team averages like 14. I finally learned how to time my interceptions.
