HAMPTON ANNOUNCES NEW HEAD COACH

Hampton University officially announced TJ Amaker is the new head coach of the men's basketball team. Amaker the son of former Michigan head coach Tommie Amaker becomes the youngest coach in NCAA at age 25.

Amaker coached at Warren High School in Virginia the past 4 years leading the Warhawks to 3 straight state championships. The Warhawks won 35+ games every year under Amaker including a 40-0 season in 2006 and a national championship.

PRESS CONFERENCE

What type of offense do you plan to use here at Hampton?
Growing up watching my Dad play at Duke I saw alot of the Motion offense. I've based my offense around that since my days at Warren so thats what were gonna go with here at Hampton. I wanna get Eric Smith and J-Rod alot of touches.

Who is your biggest mentor as a head coach?
I'd have to say my Dad or Coach K. I've always looked up to my father as a head coach and loved watching Coach K coach when my Dad played at Duke.

What are you looking for in recruits?
Size is a big factor to me. Potential is also. I'd like to recruit some future NBA players.

What kind of goals do you have set for this team for the upcoming season?
Were a very young team and there's alot of so called "experts" who say we'll win maybe 10 games. I wanna prove those doubters wrong. I feel we can make another NCAA Tournament appearance. I feel we should be able to win 18 games this season. We won 16 last year and I wanna improve on that.

2K SPORTS COLLEGE HOOPS CLASSIC

The Hampton Pirates will open the 2006-2007 season at the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs Cancer against the #22 Maryland Terrapins. The tournament is broken into four regions consisting of four teams each. The winner of each region will advance to Madison Square Garden. Joining Maryland and Hampton in the College Park region are Vermont and New Orleans.

"I'm thrilled about opening the season against such a great opponent. This gives our team a chance to see what our goal is to become. I've always been a ACC fan so this should be fun."

The torunament has featured three of the past five national champions. Florida defeated Syracuse in last year's final.

Coaches Comments
"Were big underdogs in this one. Were gonna need to pull out all the stops to put ourselves in position to steal the upset. One thing is for sure. Gary Williams will have his team ready to play. The player that concerns me the most on Maryland's team is Mike Jones. He's deadly from three point range and could really hurt us if he catches fire early."
