View Full Version : All Games: Same Old Story

Anybody that played and loved 2K5 knows this: The Maddenites - which includes about 95% of the gaming media - refused to acknowledge the substantial quality gap between 2K5 and Madden.
The All Games preview encapsulates the way the media has handled the Madden/2K situation - which is to refuse to acknowledge the superiority of 2K5. The All Games guys are maintaining the tradition of trying to talk about a vastly superior game like there is no difference in quality - using catchphrases like "It's a question of Preference."
I know this game will be better than Madden. It may not be all we want it to be, but it will be the best football sim available. And nothing that any of the morons at IGN, All Games, on this site or anywhere else say about the game is going to affect me giving 2K the benefit of the doubt.

These "2K against the world" posts always crack me up...

Did you ever stop to think that maybe (just maybe) there isn't as big a gap between 2K and Madden that you think there is?

No.

You'll notice when the guys were asked about the presentation - specifically the half-time show - they said they didn't really see much in the way of presentation, and then talked about 2K losing the ESPN license. Then they mention later in an offhand way that they only played a half.
They either didn't see the half-time - I don't think they did - or they chose to focus only on the loss of the license. Why would they not mention more of what has been put in the game to replace it? The said zero about it.
You might also notice that the guys have been frequently mentioning how much they've been playing Madden (because they LOVE football - isn't that ironic!).

Madden 2005 Review on IGN: 9.5 Incredible!

Quotes from the review:

" In one year, EA Sports has done more to right the wrongs of Maddens gameplay past than in any time in the illustrious series' history." - heard that one before

"The game might lack the presentation, the visual eye candy of ESPN NFL 2K5, but more than makes up for it in the one area that counts the most, the reason you buy a game…gameplay." - right, the gameplay!

"The feature that seems to get the most attention, and is sure to fill the mind with some of the most devastating highlights ever seen in an NFL simulation, is the Hit Stick" - yup, that hit stick sure rocked my world!

I could go on, but check it out yourself. The EA-arse-lickingly-good "REVIEW" reads like a 6 page advertisement for the game.

comedy gold! EA puts the $$$$ in the pockets of the writers and bamO high marks all over. I wonder what the NBA Live marks were being that 2K blew it out of the water on next gen. So much that Live was eventually canceled for the PS3.

ESPN NFL 2K5 Review on IGN: 9.4 Outstanding.

Quotes from the review:

"One more addition that makes this game richer is the advent of Right Thumbstick moves. In the pocket, your quarterback can duck out of danger with a single well-timed flick of the right analog." - Interesting. Didn't I just read that Madden 2008 has just included this innovative feature

"What's more, they've upgraded the cheerleader models from anorexic ghouls to bona fide digital hotties." - weren't those cutaways to the cheerleaders almost as hot as Lara Croft boob zooms (I know I got problems). How about those Madden cheeerleaders?!

"The ESPN-related graphics also do a lot to enhance the experience (especially the cool, animated passing and running charts), incorporating stats, reports and replays fluidly into the action. This has the effect of loyally reproducing an actual ESPN broadcast. The coolest part of all is that the replays don't necessarily end when you skip them, they simply shrink and fit into the play-calling screen, so that you can check out the last play's action while picking the new one." - this is 2k5 people!!!! Madden STILL doesn't have anything like this in terms of presentation, nevermind a half-time show with a replay summary hosted by Chris Berman!!!!

No, that's wrong, 2k got a lot of better reviews, and had just as much media as Madden. Cut backs at 2k are to blame for this latest fiasco, and it will only hurt the game in the long run.

2K5 - 9.5
Madden 2005 - 9.5

What's really funny about the 2K5 score - is that there were sub-sets of scores for things like graphics, sound, etc. 2K5 killed in all of these areas except for...."CONCEPT"? Huh? What? Only an 8.5 for CONCEPT? But, the graphics, the gameplay, the sound, the presentation...?

The reps go to these poser gamer wannabes and give them games, hats, t-shirts, blow jobs, etc, etc. Then they hand them the game and say...."are you enjoying all the stuff we gave you?? Here is our annual installment of this years NFL game. We would like you to review it, but be objective" (wink, wink). Then, the wannabe plays the game while wearing his hat and shirt that the rep gave him. He writes up the review while looking in the mirror at his new shirt. Did I mention the hat, too?

And we wonder how Madden gets such stellar scores?

Come on!!! We're smarter than that, people!!

These "2K against the world" posts always crack me up...

Did you ever stop to think that maybe (just maybe) there isn't as big a gap between 2K and Madden that you think there is?

I can't speak about any kind of gap between AP2K8 and anything because I haven't played it yet, but 2K5 was light years ahead of Madden '05, and you could make a very substantial case that it was better than Madden '07 on last gen systems. I think it was better than Madden '07 on next gen sytems too even though 2K5 itself was not for next gen. I challenge any Maddenite to play 2K5 for 2 or 3 weeks and then tell me in all honesty that I am wrong. There is no way.

Is it really just a matter of "preference"? I guess if you prefer a game with complexity, realism, tons of features, advanced gameplay (i.e. features like running styles and jukes with the analogue stick that Madden waited 1 or 2 years after 2K5 to add), great presentation, online leagues, etc, over an arcady, glitchy game with unrealistic gameplay, bad player ratings, useless features (like a create a play/playbook that you can't use in either franchise or superstar or online), no presentation before or during games, and cartoon-like player models who move like stick figures, then liking 2K is just a matter of "preference".

It was funny when they started talking about the passing game. The co-host said he couldn't complete any passes till he started letting his QB get set. The host said he had to quit dropping back 20 yards in order to comlete passes. Then he goes on to say QB's(in real life) actually have 3 & 5 step drops & how its implemented in this game. Duh! It was this way in 2K5.

They did mention custom soundtracks though!

I agree 100% that 2K5 was better than Madden 05. In fact, I'd argue that it's the best football game I've ever played. However, I won't judge these new games until I play them, but they both seem to have some strengths and weaknesses this year.

Thats the way it is in 2k5. 3 step drop was 30"insert play", 5 step was 50"insert play." Waiting untill your QB was set gave you much more accuracy. But if you held too long the pocket would collapse or you'd get D-Line glitched.

And some QB's can throw on the run. In 2k5 at least. I would suspect there will be some QB in AllPro that can.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this. Since they were on the radio at the time of the APF reveiw, what do you think they were wearing? These boneheads were surely wearing the crap EA gave them. The EA rep was probably under their desks performing fellatio on them, while they were trying to be objective. The allgames kid is probably still a virgin, he was misled by the viscious, life-sucking ******* we like to call EA. So, do you think they stood a chance of being objective? I feel sorry for the poor kid. He was seduced by the succubus.

These are the same people that will bad-mouth the same game after it has been out for while, and after the thrill of their first hummer is gone. The negativity will be back saying how disappointed they were with this years installment, and EA needs to step up and deliver in next years effort.

I'm not saying everyone falls into the EA web of deceit, but did you ever go into a Gamestop and see one of the dweebs behind the counter wearing a madden polo?? I'm not pointing fingers, this was only made as an observation.

Makes you wonder about all the reviews out there, doesn't it?

You guys bashing ALL-GAMES about their hands-on with APF, have no clue. Scott from All-Games is far from a EA Fanboy. He's a very fair individual, that loves FOOTBALL, who has always prefered 2k Football over MADDEN, but when VC lose the ability to make an NFL Game, the man moved-on, like many people did.

So since he was a little dissapointed, with what he saw he's now a MADDNITE & since last I brought MADDEN last year & thought it was decent, I'm a MADDENITE also right... :rotfl:

I'm a MADDENITE also
I'm not saying you're a Maddenite, Joe. I'm just saying that the opinions of some of these reviewers can be and have been skewed in the past. I used some colorful (and exagerated) examples of how this can be done. If your buddy, Scott, doesn't fall under this category than I stand corrected. But if you check his closet, you may find some EA apparel in it. This is true everywhere. Corporations do this in all industries. What makes Allgames different?

Here is a true example. I'm from Chicago, and I ran into Roger Ebert a few years ago. He was wearing a jacket from a Hollywood studio. I asked him which movie he gave a  to in order to get that. He laughed and said that it was more than one. Now before any one jumps on me saying that he had throat cancer, this was actually about 10 years ago, before he was diagnosed with the Big C.

Being from Chicago, I also am familiar with the policies at Harpo Productions. Oprah has always given things away at her shows. It started out as Dinner for two at a 'Lettuce Entertain You' area restaurant. Now, as you know, she gives away cars. Do you really think Oprah would be as popular today if she hadn't given things away?? There are rumors that houses will be given away sometime in the future. She is not the richest selfmade female millionaire in the world for nothing.

But I digress.
I want 2k to be a great game.
That's all.
Nothing more.:)

I play both games and while I prefer 2k5 still of madden 07 next gen, I will play them both again this year! Maybe college too! LOL

They seem like they wanted to like the game but, it seemed like they didn't like just for the NFL license and graphics only. We add gang tackling 4 or 5 years ago and it's cool. Madden adds g.tackling finally this year and it is going to be the greatest game ever according to them.
