Alright... NBA 2005 is not comin out for at least 5 months... which means we know very little about the game...

But what we do know is that there will be online play, with leagues...


So I figured, since it's so hard to organize a league and whatnot within the first few weeks the game has come out... that we should just start the league signups right now...

I don't know about all of you, but I'm really excited about participating in this league (especially with the Clippers getting the 2nd pic)...I'm just wondering what types of rules we should have and the length of the season/quarter

My vote is for 8 minute quarters, with a season of between 32 and 56 games....let's get talking about this :D

6 to 8 minute quarters...
Play each team once... and each team in your conference twice... (40 something games)...

Then have a normal playoff series... four 7 game series...


The rules, for now would be:
1.) No fouling for the sake of fouling. Free throws online are very difficult. With a vote, I'd like to turn on Automatic Free Throw shooting.

2.) Do not shoot an excessive amount of three pointers. If it's anything like 2k4, then it can get really cheap.

3.) Absolutely no pausing or disconnecting on purpose. Practice good sportsmanship. Don't embarrass your opponent (too badly) and take your losses like a man.


Any other ideas will be taken into account... please feel free to post your thoughts...

I agree with you on that, especially on the number of games...how do you feel about continuing into the second season and so forth (considering that's even an option in 2k5)? Do you know what kind of flexibility there is when it comes to things like schedules and trading? I never played online before.

Also (just wondering) what about 3 games against each division opponent (12 total for four other teams) to make division races more intense than conference matchups [and also have easy tiebreakers], which combines with 20 non-division conference games (2 each for 10 teams) and 15 single games against non-conference teams? That would make for 47 games total which would only be 4 more games than what you suggested, and could make division battles more fun. But I'm definitely still fine if the league wants less games. Thanks.

This is a keeper league. Here are the basic rules.

A keeper league lasts for several years and the roster you settle on at the end of each season carries to the next season.

We had a draft to pick our players in the first year. The 16 teams that are still around will keep the players they currently have. 8 teams are going to have new owners. I have 4 spots open currently. The 8 teams will have all their players thrown into a draft and they will pick until they have full rosters.

You will be able to carry a maximum of 12 players on your roster. If a player is injured, you will be allowed to drop them and pick up a replacement from the free agent pool. Your player will be protected until they return to action. .

Trades are allowed during the season and during the off season. During the season you will be able to trade on the hoops.sports.ws site. During the off season you will be able to negotiate trades on our message board.

Remember this league is going to last several years so think of the future and do some research before making any moves through the draft or trade. I expect this league to heighten the awareness and knowledge of you as a fan.

Ex: Drafting Rasheed Wallace over Carlos Boozer might seem like a good move right now, but when Rasheed retires you will have to find a replacement.

Teams that fail to make the playoffs will be tossed into a lottery. They will get first picks at the NBA rookie crop.

Ex: Last season the Cleveland Cavaliers failed to make it to the playoffs. They were put in the lottery with all the other non playoff teams and won the lottery. They were permitted to draft first and drafted LeBron James. Now they have a chance in the future.

If you find yourself to be in last place try trading a valuable veteran to a contending team in exchange for their draft pick or a young player with potential. Unlike 1 year leagues you will be able to rebound from a bad season. With patience and a little basketball knowledge you can put yourself back into contention.

As I mention earlier teams will be allowed to carry 12 player. At the end of each season every team will be allowed to lock up 8 players from their team. The remaining 4 will be available in the lottery with the upcoming rookies. If your player is not chosen in the lottery you will be able to retain them with either A. Your draft pick or B. You can wait until the draft is over and if your player is still not chosen you will retain them automatically.

Most likely next week. Check back for the exact starting date, and also practice with your team online, you'll need it...


I also want to make a list of rules, so far I have a few...

1.) Absolutely no pulling, pausing, or disconnecting.

2.) No substituting players into positions where they shouldn't be playing... e.g., Dirk Nowitzki at PG, Damon Stoudamire at C... (Exceptions can be made, such as Dirk and KG playing the 3,4,5 spots, as they do realistically. But no big men playing guard positions.)

3.) You cannot make an inbounds pass from your own baseline (after the other team scores) to any of your players that are past half court. You cannot control your PG, run him under the basket of the other teams goal, and pass to him for an easy layup, for example.

4.) No intentional fouling during the course of the game to purposefully send the other player to the free throw line, unless it is under two minutes in the fourth quarter, and you are trying to come back. Free throws online can be extremely difficult. (I may turn on Free Throw help, to avoid this problem.)

If any of you have any ideas for rules you'd like to throw in, feel free. I'm up for any and all suggestions.

i say u cant throw the ball past half court in non Full court press plays. However if u play a full court trap u should be able to throw the ball up court...

Don't watch Instant Replays unless it's something rare. That annoys the heck out of anyone.

No rumbling the controller on free throws. It's hard enough when you have Foyle or ben Wallace at the line.

You should have both timeouts left... or at least one...

And if not, can you realistically chuck a full court pass with two seconds left, to a player cutting to the paint, while the other team is covering him?

So my reason is that you can't do it in real life, why should you be able to pull off this madness in the game...


To beat full court presses, you still have to follow by the rules... just pass it up the court after your PG receives the inbounds...


Do you guys think I should turn on Free Throw Help (where it shoots FTs for you)?

Also, I'm thinking about putting the difficulty on Hall of Fame, so people won't chuck up threes all day...

I have yet to play on the Hall of Fame difficulty. Mainly because you can't find too many people that will play on it.

Can you make wide open shots?

Also I think it is key that everyone practices good sportmanship. I mean lets keep it fun. It's just a game. Be competitive, but don't be a total a-hole when you win or lose.

You can do trades also. Stats/league leaders/schedules/message board/rookie watch is all on there.

You can go to espnvideogames.com login on your PS2 name and check scores and all that out in ESPN.com format. It's really cool.

Alright Fellas.... the league will be starting this upcoming week...


I've decided to split the Conferences up into two... so the Eastern Teams will not play the Western Teams until the NBA Finals...

Here's how it works guys:
In the Eastern Conference, there are 16 teams. Each team plays each other once. The top 8 teams advance to the Playoffs. I moved the Hornets into the East, just to make it so there are an even number of teams, since an odd number (15) is not allowed in leagues.

The Western Conference, there are 14 teams. Each of you will play each other once, and play two of you opponents twice. The top 8 teams will advance here as well.


The top 8 teams from each division will then advance to a tournament (which will be another league that will form, but it will only be in a playoff format.) The format of the playoffs will be decided upon after the seasons are up.

Due to the set up of the leagues, trades will not be allowed.

Here is the set-up of the games:
6 Minute Quarters
Free Throw Help: On
Biorythm: On
Difficulty: Hall Of Fame
Games Per Week: Two

Rules:
1.) No cheesing. (No chucking the ball upcourt on inbounds passes to your PG, who is standing in the paint... no shooting threes all day... no double teaming every possession.)
2.) No pulling or quitting.
3.) Show good sportsmanship. Congratulate your opponent on their win, and don't rub it in if you did win.
4.) Try your hardest to play your games each week. If you are unable to, please contact me or one of the assistant commissioners. We understand you all have lives, but try to not make it a habit of missing games.

Any violation of these rules will result in a swift kick out of the league.
