here ya go guys
It’s understandable if you’ve circled July 16th on your calendar, dubbed that day The Return of the King and started watching the clock, not the calendar, since the last frost of the year.
Next month, 2k Sports will offer up All Pro Football 2K8. It’s their first foray into the world of professional, but unlicensed, football video games. Fans of the last 2k football game, 2k5, may be on board no matter what happens. The rest of the world is waiting to see if a game with no NFL logos, teams or players can compete with the turducken-chomping juggernaut at EA. 2k Sports sat down with GA to dig in a little deeper, beyond what you’re seeing in press releases and on forums, to see what’s coming in APF 2k8. Here’s what we found out after seeing the game in person.
Let the Debates on Ranking Football’s Best BEGIN!
The first thing you’ll do to start playing is create your custom team. Step one is drafting your first eleven players from the Legends roster, which is broken into three categories: gold, silver and bronze. Passers, runners and receivers dominate the list, but there are plenty of defensive players to choose from, as well. There are also offensive linemen if you’re a lifetime member of the Tony Munoz fan club.
The rest of your roster spots are filled in by randomly generated players with fictional names. You can choose their general strengths (run blocking vs. pass blocking, for example), but won’t be creating each player. Legends are marked on the field at all times by a star at their feet, so there’s no mistaking a legend for a newbie.
Contrary to popular expectations, you can create custom players from scratch (Viva Ron Mexico!). Created players are placed into the Legends roster and can be selected the same way as other legends, so they take up one of your eleven spots.
Created players also have access to the special abilities of legends. Instead of traditional player ratings in various categories (ranked 1-100), APF 2K8 uses a special abilities system to differentiate players. Legends have qualities that fit the player, such as Dan Marino’s quick release, John Elway’s rocket arm and Walter Payton’s unique, and dangerous, stutter step. We didn’t get enough play time in to see how non-legends players are distinguished from each other, but the system is definitely an interesting idea and we’re anxious to put it through its paces.
Vegas is LONG Overdue for a Team
There are 20 team names, each with a pre-existing logo. Logos can be customized (with color changes, for example) and you can pick letters of the alphabet instead, but you can’t create logo from scratch. Completely custom logo design would have been nice, but with online play and no way to police what images some degenerates might want to put on a helmet, it’s no surprise the options have been limited.
Uniform customization is as detailed as any sports game so far. And even without logos, creating reasonable facsimiles of pro teams is a foregone conclusion.
Christmas in July
Based on what we’ve seen, APF 2K8 looks right at home in HD (great player detail and nice animations, particularly tackling) and offers about as much customization as one could hope for. It will include online leagues and tournaments in game, so you can show off your uniform design skills and take that cheap shot at Ickey Woods you’ve always dreamed about. Real time injuries mean players may come up lame in the middle of a play, which should be interesting. After seeing the game up close and personal, it looks like a blast and we can’t wait to jump into the full version come July. It’s going to be a good summer.

Ha-ha! They've got Rice dressed in a faux-49ers uni... I guess to show people what they can create if they want to!
Funny though, he looks skinny in those screens - like it's the camera angle that makes them look either realistic or too skinny.

Funny, the grass in Madden 08 looks just like All Pro. Maybe this "3D grass" causes issues with the framerate, and Tiburon had to remove it to get their engine up to speed. However, we can talk up All Pro's crowds because Madden downgraded their grass textures and the crowd simply looks like garbage. Where's the argument Gt?

I've displayed some healthy skepticism here, specifically toward the notion of a $60 price tag, but this preview in particular is the first that has gone a long way in dispelling my doubts. I need some gameplay footage, of course, but there's some genuine excitement building. I'm starting to view this game as it's own self-contained experience for the first time.

Uhh Dude You do realize this is 2k football not madden right?? Madden does not upgrade by year 2k does upgrade in every year they put a game out. This is not just any game this is all por football 2k8 one screen is enough for me as soon as the game was announced i went and reserved four copies . Madden fans are blind by the great hype thats why they go and get the game. Well really you cannot blame them for trying to trust Ea when a new season begins. This is 2007, they can post a damn video of the actual game. People always wanna talk about 2k not having the money to advertise a make a push for their games like EA but they dont even take full advantage of the avenues that they do have.

There were some recent Madden pics where some were complaining about the grass detail, and one of the gameplay vids seemed to display that the grass textures were dubbed down. It makes sense though, considering MLB2K7 has a full 3D grass and the framerate in that game isn't very stable either.

You were in a Minor League, thats pretty cool - Respect! What position?
Me and a bunch of guys just meet up at a high school around here, we play tackle - but when we end up playing that a few guys just end up dominating the game and eventually people stop trying to tackle - which is when we usually switch to wrap-up or touch (more skill involved if you ask me - though they disagree)

I saw the same thing with the crowd. There could be a couple of things. The crowd could be 2D sprites (which I believe is not the case considering it was said otherwise if I remember correctly). They may have not implemented camera relative movement on a tilt axis yet.

If a flat textured glass means higher player detail, sideline detail, crowd detail, stadium detail, referee existence, and shadow deatails, all at 60FPS, then I'm for it. Let the grass be flat. NBA2K7 has all sorts of eyecandy going on in its background, and it looks like All Pro will follow suit.

These stills make the game look so dynamic. It's difficult to explain but everything just looks right for once. The expressions, the movement, the feeling of speed and power.

Yes we can create players from scratch with the legends ability's it would take up space out of the eleven you select
In designing your team (there's room for up to 20 custom squads), you'll pick not only the hometown and stadium (many of which are themed to ridiculous proportions), but also design the look of the team's uniforms. You have complete control over the color layouts on your uniforms and equipment. Although team names are pre-determined, you can easily take some extra time to model exact replicas of NFL team uniforms
Abilities such as scrambler, clutch, signal stealer, leadership bonus and laser arm help define in concrete terms just how one player excels over another. These special abilities also appear in the game's "create-a-player" mode.

I dont think anyone has ever confirmed that 2K8 is running at 60FPS.

Fair One
June 19th, 2007, 12:53 PM
It was stated that the names are pre determined but they said they have alots of logos

I think NFL2K through NFL2K5 confirmed that the game will be running at 60FPS. I also think that NBA2K7 and CHoops2K7 (both built by Visual Concepts) confirms to me that it will run at 60FPS. If you state about MLB2K7, well...it's not made by VC, so it's not an issue.

Oh, sorry about that.
The general consesnsus seemed to be that you can only choose names for the custom players from a list, but this Gaming Age article made it sound like you could enter whatever you want (it gave the "Ron Mexico" example), so I don't think anyone knows. The only thing that seems to be fairly certain is that you can't enter the exact name of a current NFL player; however, who knows - things keep changing so much.

You havent even seen the game in action (aside from that trailer). That makes you NO different that madden fans who run out and buy the game just b/c it's a new damn yr
It's not quite the same. Actually in this case you're wrong. This is the FIRST installment of a 2K football game on a next gen console. So just to get anything but Madden warrants a "run out and buy" as you put it. Now 2K9 would be more appropriate to make that statement as we have a game out and would then be able to compare it.

For all the people crying about gameplay video and how the game is 3 weeks away and 2k has yet to show anything but a trailer...it's coming sometime this week!! So shut-up already!! The screens are nice. We'll get gameplay video this week. EA does it their way and 2k does it theirs. It's just two different strategies. Albeit EA seems to be more successful in the marketing department, 2k and EA are still two different companies. They don't have to do everything the same.

I thought I read that you can take a created team online but not created players. Meaning you make a team with just the legends and the generic players. But you can't create players and take them online. Im not sure on this one. If you can create players to replace legends than I may not even use legends..I would just create my own legends and team for online.

Alright... my question is... are we still unable to edit the premade teams uniforms and stadium and stuff? Cause the way it was worded in that preview made me think otherwise. Anyone know?

You select a team, then you're able to edit that team's uni and select a stadium for that team to play in. One team. That's it.
