View Full Version : Who should I give the nod to?

I'm mapping out my picks for bronze, silver, and gold. But I've run into a problem, I caught a snag at QB.

I'm not going for any golds at the QB, RB, or WR position. Shocking, I know, but I'm going for childhood heros. I'm not going to be like every Joe and pick the best players to win online.

Anyway, at first I said 'Randall Cunningham all the way, he's the guy I want commanding my team. He'll make my offense explosive. He'll give the game a fast pace and score me points. He's what I need."

But then I looked the list over and I saw who else but Bernie Kosar! And I said 'Bernie has unbelieveable accuracy and a moderately strong arm. Not only that, but he has the uncanny ability to control the tempo of a game. With a solid O-line (which I plan on building) he could pick apart defenses, and I could manage the clock well and have Bernie throwing Godlike passes to John Taylor, or zipping it to Christian Okoye."

I know some of you might be thinking "Joe Montana is great! Choose him!" or "Steve Young can make your offense explosive!", but I don't want gold tier QB's, RB's or WR's, like I mentioned before. Those 2 I beleive are underrated in this game, and they are two QB's that I looked up to growing up.

The question remains. Who do I go with? Accurate and Time Management, or Explosive and athletic? I'm not getting both players, that's a waste of a pick. I want to evenly spread my picks, dedicate one gold to defense (I'm thinking Reggie White or Ronnie Lott), and one to an Offensive lineman that will protect my QB and RB. I also plan on dedicating 3 of my 3 silver to offense (John Taylor and Christian Okoye, and ???) and all my bronze to defense.

See, this is why it's a ball breaker. Because if I get Cunningham, then I keep my original plan going. But if I get Bernie, then I swap out my 3rd silver for a defensive player. It's a delicate balance. And I'd like to get it right the first time, I want one team to dominate my friends with. We've arranged a tournament the day the game comes out (whenever that might be) and we're doing the "Jackpot" tourney where everyone who wants to get in puts 20$ into the pot, and the winner gets the pot. And seeing as we've got interest coming in from about 10 people, it could be big money. We laid the rules that you get ONE team, 1 hour of practice to get the mechanics down, and NO editing once your team is drafted. So I need this down.

Question is, who gets the nod?

Personally Id go with Cunningham, go for the explosive offense, yeh use your golds / bronze for defense. Get a lead early and then use your better legends to maintain that early lead. Joe Jacoby or Munoz always a good pick for your OL. PLus Cunningham always gives u that scrambling ability thatll make opponents think twice, is he scrambling or throwing. Choice is yours though my friend.

Well, I'll be having a solid offensive line. But I guess that would be an added bonus with Cunningham. I could throw it, or scramble. It's tough though because Cunningham lacks the accuracy that Kosar has, which will put me in a tight spot if I face a shut down corner.

I plan on drafting Munoz, he was a beast back in the day!

If your confident your O-line can do a job, go with Kosar, if you have a weaker O-line then you can utilise Cunninghams scrambling ability. How bout Munoz with say Russ Grimm or Dwight Stephenson..pretty good protection for Kosar.

I might just draft Kosar, and get Andre Ware as my backup, and have one gold offensive lineman, and one gold defensive player, 3 offensive silvers, with 4 other bronze defensive players so it's mapped out

5 defense, 6 offense.

I get explosive fast paced football with Andre Ware, except it's a little watered down, but I'll only have him in when I need points fast, or when my o-line gets beat on the inside and I need to roll out.

Then I get slow, time munching, game tempo changing football, good field general skills, and great Accuracy with Bernie Kosar. I'll have him in when I have a solid lead, and just want to keep ahold of the game and not make stupid mistakes.

Then I've got John Taylor and Andre Reed catching the ball, Christian Okoye running the ball behind a gold offensive lineman, and on defense I've got a par defensive with a standout leader.

Does that sound good?

You sound like you gameplan a lot like I do. Control the ball on O (Running alot), play shutdown D, and give yourself short fields on offense. That being said, you should most definitely go with Kosar. There really is not much need for a guy with low accuracy and more mobility in that case. You are going to have a good-great Oline, so have your RB do all the running for you. All you need for short-medium passes is a good, accurate pocket passer. Que Kosar.

Also, you need to be concentrating on your down/yardage situations, and not running around with a QB. Leave that stuff for the teenagers. They are easy to shut down. You could be using those downs more efficiently by running a better offense than that. Name a scrambling QB that has ever won a SB (And Elway was NOT a scrambling QB.. he was a passer first, and a damn good one at that. He just could scramble when he had too).

In your case, Kosar is a much better fit.

I see your point. And you're right. With a line like I have I'll have Okoye blasting the defenses, and I'll need Kosar on the 3rd and 10, 3rd and 5 situations, or when I need to put together a scoring drive.

That being said, I think I'll switch the Ware pick and maybe get a kicker with it. You never know when you'll need a clutch field goal.

Damn, this is just the big appeal to this game. That you actually have to strategize for the team you want and make tough decisions.

I know, it's one of the things you didn't get with Madden, because every QB plays the same, the only real difference is wether they're faster or not. In this game though you have to say to yourself "Do I want to go fast, or do I want to go slow? Do I want big yards and big points, or do I want to keep it moderated and control the pace of the game?" and on defense you've got to say "Do I want to focus on the pass? Should I run a balanced defense? Do I want to stop the run? Do I want speed or power?" In Madden you just don't get that feeling, which is why it wears off so fast.

Just a note, I've alos considered Steve Grogan, and I don't know if he's in the game, but I would definately go for Dale Lamonica or Jim Plunkett.

I am going to draft Bernie as well... I grew up watching him as a kid...

I can't wait for this game....
