You can play a full season and playoffs but there is no franchise. Live is great if the game comes with a free trial you should check it out, it's well worth $50.00 a year.

2K/VC has included a revolutionary mode called 'Single Season'! What you do, is you choose a team and play the other teams to see who can make the playoffs and hopefully win the championship!
Now, this might sound familiar, like other season modes you may have seen in other games. But this mode is revolutionary because 2K/VC has eliminated all the User options that were available in NFL 2K5 on last-gen consoles! You can't control CPU teams; you can't assign them playbooks; and you can't set their playcalling tendencies. See? VERY different!

Of course there is a franchise...start a season with a team, finish it, then start another season with the same team.

That's not bad. And pick the same team except for a few players, and just pretend some guys left the following season because of free agancy, and the new guys arrived via trades and such! Right on!
That actually should be listed as an APF feature for season mode: YOU decide who stays and goes!

Unfortunately there is not a Franchise Mode. The closest thing is a season mode, but I don't think there is a salary cap, trades, draft, etc.
If you're into online gaming, playing against your friends, or playing a few games against the computer AI without any long term continuity (beyond a season), 2k8 looks like it is well worth checking out with the improvements it made over 2k5.
If Franchise Mode is solely what you're into, like it is for me, this game is not for you. Best bet for Franchise Mode is to either play 2k5 in Franchise Mode (editors are available online, sliders can be adjusted, and play the game the way football was meant to be played and it is a very balanced and competitive) or if Madden 2008 looks as good or better than 2k5, buy that for the Franchise Mode.

No nothing in season mode. No trades, salary cap, drafts, etc, etc. And no choosing CPU lineups even. Thomas said in the interview yesterday (?) that the season mode CPU teams are preset, meaning you play the same teams over, and over, and over, and over, and over...
Fortunately I kept my Xbox, and have two copies (one unopened) of NFL 2K5!

I only have one copy of 2k5, but it still works well as does my old gen Xbox. Doesn't look as good as next gen, but still looks a lot better than the pong and atari I grew up on! At this point I've been using my old gen system more then the 360, and hope it keeps working for at least another year or two (when hopefully 2k will have a football game with a Franchise Mode).

why does franchise mode matter, its about the gameplay! I hated 2k5s franchise... cause every one asked for too much money.... someone could be on your team for years and then all the sunden NO! you better give me 1000000 dollers! and to sign someone with a 90 rating you have to pay more for him then you are paying your best player on your team!

Hey, I played pong the same year it came out! It was a big thing, that... blip.
I love the look of NFL 2K5. I have absolutely no problems with the graphics of that game. And to the other poster, I agree 2K5's franchise mode has some problems. But it's an option at least at this point for the many gamers who want 2K football AND franchise mode.

For some people, Franchise Mode matters as much as gameplay. Let's leave it at that as this issue has been discussed a lot (and hopefully 2k has paid attention to how important Franchise Mode is for many gamer and will make sure it is available in the future).
To answer your posted question, the fincanial aspects present a challange in that you need to decide how to build your team (a lot of many on a few players like the Colts or look for bargains and rely on playing to your strenghts and scheming like the Patriots). If a player is that good they want o be paid, much like Dwight Freeney was yesterday, and the owner (or Franchise Mode owner) has to make decisions about what is best for the team and how to win.

LOL! And to think that back in the day that was state of the art!
Still have the old handheld electronic QB. It's still in working condition and never got rid of it.
The Franchise Mode in 2k5 did have some problems, but as you mentioned it is an option, and using things like self imposed "rules" it is still very good. I still find it challenging and fun. And it was still light years ahead of anything Madden did in their Franchise Modes.

Quit being a moron and showing your ***, kid.
This is exactly the POINT of playing franchise mode. Some of us aren't "power gamers" and need to have every great player on the team. Some of us like seeing young players come up and BECOME 90 rated players. We may lose them eventually too, but it's all about the balancing act.

Couldn't agree more. It puts the Franchise Mode gamer in control of both the short and long term success of their team. And it is quite a balancing act to try winning and managing the salary cap, and also recognizing when it is time to blow the team up and rebuild (like the Titans did two years ago), no matter what the record will be for the following season.
Patriots are frugal spenders and let players like Vinatieri, Law and Milloy go while signing players who could contribute at bargain level prices. They rarely spend big bucks on players.
The Colts chose to sign some players for big bucks (Manning, Harrison, etc.) while letting others go (Edgerrin James).
The Redskins never met a free agent they didn't like and are always close to the cap limit, although they do let players go and eat the contract (Archueletta).

i see wut you guys are saying, but franchise mode doesnt make sense with legends.
are they all going to start out 20 years old? 25 years old? 30 years old?
how would the draft work? draft generic players, who will probably be decent at best?
how long will you have the legends under contract at the beginning of your franchise? will they all become free agents after 3 years? how hard will it be to resign them and sign free agents?
those are just some of the reasons where it just doesnt make any sense to have a franchise mode with the legends. i am a big fan of franchise mode, and i definitely want to see it reinstated once they have nfl rights again, but right now, it just doesnt make sense.

i'm amazed at how people still cant grasp the idea tha a franchise IS possible with this game. It doesnt really take much inteligence to see a way around the whole "Legends" gimmick-
like someone said before, Franchise is just as an important part of gameplay to alot of people. Without one, this game will just feel like a demo for 2k9 to me

you dont make sense. those reasons dont make sense- you are TRYINg to make it sound difficult to have a franchise when actually its not.
by your reasoning almost any idea 2k doesnt have could be reasoned out. face it APF2k8 is really just a glorified fantasy draft mode that couldve been in a NFL2k8. there is no franchise because they didnt have time to make one. The developers arent as closed minded and many of you try to reason.
