View Full Version : Game Informer and 1 Up Review Scores Explained

Clearly the bulk of you need me to spell out the 6.5-7.5 scores. So let's do it... The game got what it deserves. I'm not surprised by the scores and neither should you be. I told our community this was coming months ago, and as usual I'm right. The game feels like a work-in-progress--half a game at whole next-gen price. Here's the primary reasons why Game Informer and 1 Up scored the game as they did:
- No Franchise mode or a worthy replacement.
- Little single-player replay value with just Practice, Online and Season game modes.
- Overkill of recycled NFL 2K5 animations and not enough new animations.
- Polished Xbox looking visuals.
- Twin legends online.

Damn man....I agree with everything except, there is so many new animations....the graphics could be better, but the close ups are cool. And twin legends is a good thing, because you don't have to mess with your team now.

Please! Twin legends isn't real. How many Jerry Rices are there? One!

Twin legends are fine, no people complaining about how , "Oh you beat me cause you used a 90+ rated team and i only have 80"

LOL...none of this is "real", man. You might as well downgrade the game because the lineups aren't "real" at all.

Again, not fine. The online team selection process should be similar to gym glass: pre-game alternating player selection on a timer. This would give each player's team their fair share of legends while making for unique teams.

i know when i start playing the game ima hate not having a franchise but i've had a couple months already to get used to the idea that im only gonna be playing one season with a team then i gotta switch it up...i dunno im trying to think positive cause like i said..i am not an online gamer...thats why im REALLY hoping it's above and beyond in gameplay and presentation cause then ima be severly ****ed if it ain't...

At least wait for a $10-dollar price drop. Show 2K Sports they gotta come with their best stuff or don't come.

I dont agree with you much but you got a very good point. 2k should have come with its best stuff because they know if they lose (as far as sales and losing fan) this is it. It will be no 2k football for a long while. And I dont want to hear: THIS IS THEIR FIRST FB GAME ON NEXT GEN: crap. I hope they will be back next year so they can have a fully loaded FB game. Like some people say, dont bring a knife to a gunfight.

Yeah, everyone jumped on my case too when I predicted the game would suffer in the reviews for having no franchise mode. I can't even gloat because I knew I was right in the first place. Still, i'm going to buy it tonight. But I won't do so next year if there's no franchise mode. But I don't think there's anything to worry about. The guys at 2K couldn't possibly be dumb enough to leave it out a second year. I'll head to the Operation Sports board for some unbiased reviews though, as I haven't seen much of anything resembling objectivity on this forum since yesterday.

None. The only game I'll be playing this year is NHL '08.

I don't know games.... they tend to not talk back... they just sit there looking all CD like. I will try to communicate with them from time to time when they are in my 360. However, I don't think they enjoy the words "WTF!" and "HTF?" but I think they enjoy the words "AWE YEAH!!!" but what they enjoy most is the comfortable silence.

I agree with the 7.5 score, just not the 6.5. That's too damn low considering that all that APF is missing is a franchise. All the other **** you said is irrelevant to the score and/or misinformed. Then again, you do like hockey, so that might explain why you're oh so wrong.

That game will not live up to the hype either. Talk about crappy graphics and animations, NHL 07 was horrible. I rented it from Gamefly and played one game. No thanks. Once again, EA came to the table with gimmicks in place of good gameplay. NHL 2K7 had its faults but was still better than EA's offering and why do they still not offer leagues in the EA games? C'mon again talking about coming with your "Best" to the table. EA hasn't done that in quite some time. They know all the EA fans out there will buy whatever they put out.

if you only had a clue....
this is similar to some soccer scrub posting up in a basketball forum that he doesn't like the game or agrees with bad ratings. If you don't play bball your words are baseless pointless.
Similar to a hockey chump (thedeadbeatfather) posting up in a football forum bashing a football game.... your posts have zero meaning and look to be more intent on a cry for attention.

I agree that review sites gave it a lower score due to its lack of game modes, but that doesn't make them right.
The graphics are as good as we've seen, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of new animations, the gameplay is smooth and realistic, and while twin legends is annoying, it's not enough to lower the overall score of the game by more than a point.

I mean the game is still fun to play. It didn't beat Madden at most aspects. But one thing I do like is that you can play anybody...Like for instance, I am a Cowboys fan and for the last few years I couldn't even compete online with the likes of Troy Hambrick, Vinny Testaverde, Quincy Carter etc. Now with this game it really doesn't matter for the MOST part...I think that 2k will be able to do a lot more once they get the license...But NO 2K fan should compare this game to Madden 08...It's not better than Madden 07...

Anyone who thinks 2K8 isn't the ****ln shlt must have brain damage, or not love football and realistic physics.
Proof:
1.) My IQ professionally tested at 165.
2.) I bought a PS3 on Tuesday, for the sole purpose of 2K8.
3.) I do not even own a HDTV. I'm playing on SDTV.
4.) I spent $600+ for one video game and not only do I not regret it, it's the best decision I've ever made.
Yes, after only 5-6 games, I'm realizing this game might actually be as good as 2K5. Any flaws it has, it makes up for with removing all 2K5 glitches.
Playing games by oneself is no challenge, boring, and waste of time. Unless you're competting mentally against a human, what are you really doing? Fantasizing about how you'd franchise a team? C'mon man, 2K is not a dream world type bullshlt. It's for playing head to head, strategy vs strategy.

When are people going to freaking realize this game is a feel out game. This game is meant t6o see if there was interest in the game. THey ere not going to spend hell of money on developing a football game people had no interest in.
What they did with this game was everything from the kick off to the last second of the game is 100 percent top notch. Could they have put everything into the game? sure. They could have spent serious cash and put more **** into it, but what if the general public had no interest and they end up losing a few million?
Remember, this is a business first just like everything else in life that has money involved in it.
2k9 and beyond will have more extra's in the game, but they first need to see if people are interested in it.
This is by far the best "pure football" game ever made on any system.

You miss the point of your own comment. With this game model they dont need a license. You said yourself as a Cowboys fan you can't compete. And no, with the NFL license they would be restricted by it. Why not compare it to Madden 08? Is gameplay not the reason we play games? It is for me. This is a great playing game. No magical turns from runners or 60 yrd bomb passes on the run. I challenge EA to make a game this real, license or not. I am willing to bet they can't do it. What was the selling point last year? ....seeing grass blades? C'mon! I want to play a good football game I can go outside and see grassblades, Halo 1 had grass blades I could look at....

I've played my share of football games...Tecmo Bowl-NFL 2K5. I know my stuff, kid. You don't need to play football videogames to know APF 2K8 is an overpriced, incomplete product. My posts are the truth and nothing but. If you can't handle the truth, than go ride your bike.

Ok... let's think about this. Assuming you're talking online mode, in the 'Other' game you choose a team and I choose the same team. What's stopping me from doing that? What makes this game have a higher requirement than The Other?

I'd dock Madden NFL 2008 points too, if I were to rate it.
