I've been playing football games since Tecmo for NES. I started my Madden career with 2001, the debut on PS2. I liked it a lot, thought the graphics were mind-blowing (looking back... they're not). Go online in Madden and you'll definitely be involved in a NE/IND/CHI/PHI vs. NE/IND/CHI/PHI game. The team rating system is a complete disadvantage to those people who's hometown teams suck (being a Boston fan, I've had my share of ups and downs as far as team power in videogames). A very good Pats team would cause any other to struggle.
Now, with 2K8, the teams are actually even. But not SO even that yards are never gained. They just have different areas of customization that one person would lean towards, while another might have a weakness (run defense -> balance -> pass defense, etc.) This game is a battle to the endzone, a downright BATTLE. In Madden, once I made it to the 50-yard line I felt like there was a touchdown about to happen soon. With 2K8, I still have to pay attention, be aware, because I could lose possesion or yardage at the drop of a hat (or ball, if you'll pardon the pun).
And honestly, if people are complaining that sometimes the same players face each other, then there cannot be *THAT* much wrong with this game. Where were these people in Patriots vs. Patriots matches?
Long story short, this game grew on me after about three offline matches. Once you get in the mindset of "This game is not Madden. I must relearn all I've known" you are good to go. I've played one ranked match online, and won 14-10. And I scored the winning touchdown with 16 seconds left on the clock. This game is definitely a keeper if you are willing to be put into a pure simulation mindset, which should be preferred when it's a sport.
