View Full Version : How does someone rush for 300 yards, 100+ QB rating, and still lose?

Well I guess its my defense, but man I am sucking at this game. I ran for 297 yards, and my QB rating as over 100 and had around 100 yards from that. Yet I still lose the game in overtime 36-28.
Which is something else I was wondering. I am ranked 25ish in rushing, 175ish in defense and 250 is in passing, yet with my 7-9 record I am ranked 1050 or so.
What are your rankings? All of my games I seem to lose by a touchdown or less and its from stupid mistakes that make a huge difference.
I am curious to see what people are ranked compared to their overall.

are you talking about the game you had with me last night and you killed me with earl campell lol.
I am going to be honest with ya even though it was a fun game. Your too one dimensional. if you noticed in the 4th and OT quaters all i did was shut down campell at the end to get the win. But of course after that game i made a new team built to stop the run lol.

Are you Kronos? Great game. Ya towards the end you were definately shutting down Earl. I am definately a running kind of player, but I try to use pass to keep you honest.
One of the other things that kills me is pursuits on the ball carier. I have to break my habbit of switching to the closest player when they are not even on the screen and then the game makes them take sharp cuts and takes them out of hte play. I need to let hte cpu go the pursuit going until I am closer and hten switch and make sure I am running the right way.
Also, when defending the pass, there was one play where I though I was a linemen going for hte QB so I dove, and obvsiouly I dove with the DB that was one on one with an a reciver. That touchdown ****ed me off.
I am sure I can see my own mistakes, but its good to get feedback.
Anything else I did that was obvious? Besides pounding it with Earl :p

Sounds like the Baltimore Ravens. ;)
Dunno. Personally I've been having issues against people picking two gold WRs. Jerry Rice and anyone else with speed burner. They pick and deep pattern, and unless I've picked Hail Mary D, they score. Lord, I've tried everything else. I don't have any gold corners or safeties, so they score on one play, consistently. I've tried blitzing, I've tried Dime - bump, cover 12, man, zone, manual coverage....it just doesn't matter. :\ Short of reorganzing my team to have two gold safeties, I might as well just concede the game in that matchup. If anyone has hints I'd love to hear it.
Anyway, back to the point of this thread, it just seems to me you are lopsided, with high powered offense, and no defense. I bolstered my run defense because I got tired of users with Barry Sanders and OJ Simpson running me over. Now I'm hitting gold wideouts and geting burned by it. I don't recall star players tearing you up quite this badly in 2K5, and I'm having a hard time finding ways to deal with it other than modifying my team constantly.

yeah i am kronos that was an exciting game though. scored with 15 seconds left to go into overtime.
but i played a guy after you who had joe montana and walter payton. I played with the defensive team I just made (10 legends)
well i must say i hate joe montana now. every pass was like undefendable. and he had a silver and bronze WR. And He passed all game cause I stuff payton (well my defense i built did the job i wanted lol) but i still had good coverage corners. well he passed everydown after than and i lost. 28 -7. also didn't help i had no offense so i added to more offensive players. Its all about strategy really. You have to match teams up with who you are facing.

A good QB rating can happen if your QB is 1 for 1, with 20 yards passing and no INT's. Its not a good measure of a consistent and dangerous passing game.
Try expanding your offensive playcalling. Mix in different play types. Try plays you wouldn't normally try in certain situations. Try some screen passes to Campbell (it will work if you execute it properly). When you're winning toward the end of the game, try running the clock down as much as possible to give the defense less time to catch up to you.

I also beat you last night I believe. I couldn't figure out how to stop Campbell until at the very end. Once I did, that was really your only method of moving the ball. Your QB rating is above 100 because your pass plays are so few that nobody's going to be running any defense against the pass.

have you tried using some play-action passes? I've noticed that the PA seems to get some of the scrubs to commit, and if your opponent is using a legend on D, he may commit, too. However, don't fall in love with it because the AI gets wise to certain plays after a while.

Thats the thing though, my defense personel wise seems solid.
I have a silver and bronze safety, fridge for tackle, bronze DE, and Mike Singletary as ILB.
The only change I can think of is losing my bronze offensive tackle(I am sure Earl will manage) and put a bronze corner on defense?
Thoughts?
I dont really want to make multiple teams, I just want a sound team all around to use.
edit- I know what the QB rating is :p I am just saying, I had good completion percentage, and decent yards through the air for someone that runs alot.
I also do try PA, but definately not enough. I want to run screens, but I can never get them to work in practice. Now matter how hard or when I throw the ball, he just floats it to the RB and by the time that happens the D is usually close by.
Thanks for all the tips though, I will mess around more tonight.

Screens SCREENS screens...Passing rating means nothing. Passing YARDS means more (in my opinion). People who play me know that I use screens at moments they aren't used to (3rd and 1...gotcha b*tch). Then when they play the screen (which I read), I kill them over top with a post, out patterns. Anyways, it seems that you don't vary your play calling.
If you keep doing the same plays, the game will get boring and people will figure you out. Even the pattern of what side of the ball you like to run. I use these methods (like keep running to the right, so in a big situation, change it up to the left and just have to beat either 1 or no people.
You have to think like a coach and a quarterback. You have to read defenses quick (I can read zones even before the ball is hiked just by playing someone for 2 quarters...oh and I mean specific zones like cover 2,3, etc...) and be able to think what option has the best chance to be open or which hole is going to be open.
Second thing...you gotta get better at defense. You can be greatness at offense, but if you can't stop someone, that's how you lose, plain and simple.

I may be one dimmensional in running a lot, but I mix up the type and side all the time. I dont think where its going is predictable, was it Kronos?
How do you execute screens properly? I know the game of football, and what plays to call etc, but I struggle executing them in the game ;)

i didn't want multiple teams either but after i loss four in a row i made 4 more teams lol. then went on a two game winning streak i am 3-6 now but i played like 4 unranked games and won those but they don't count towards any records.
its all about matchups with this game and i think thats what makes this game so great.

For situations like that, I really like the Dime Package, Greyhound play. It's man coverage, and rushes the two inside corners. I always assign one of the rushing corners to one of the WRs, double teaming him. Sometimes I'll assign the other corner to another WR if I'm really concerned. Sometimes I'll manually move him right up to the line to let the opponent know that the blitz is on, and he had better throw damn fast. When that happens, he tends to throw for the #1 WR, and he's double-teamed (usually by Woodson and a scrub).
I had pretty good luck with that strategy when my #1 CB was Albert Lewis. Now that I've added Woodson, mmmmmm, manual picks.

well i figured out how to stop him at the end. I just focused my ILb on campell and after that he was limited. you can't stop him reall ybut you can limit him. One thing i noticed about 2K8 is that The linebackers have a horrible first step on running plays. but once you focus your LB on the running back it makes it better.

How do you effectively throw screens? No matter how I throw it, it takes forever to get there and the HB is staring at me so I have to wait for the animation that turns him around and by then he is swarmed.

This was a HUGE problem for me in 2k3! I play as a DL, but if I would see another DL close to the QB, I'd hit "B" to switch to that player. BUT since the QB had just thrown the ball, I would switch to the player closest to where the ball was going and would constantly pull the DB off of coverage by either running the wrong way (because the DL was heading another direction) or by actually just diving to the ground!
Now.. I didn't have this problem nearly as often in 2k5, so they must have done something with the sensitivity, I guess. But it still would happen occasionally. It happened to me in 2k8 last night and I lost but that score. Oiy...

to execute a screen this is what i do.
I take my 3 step drop (sometimes 5 if its a gold or silver lineman who is going to be let go) and as soon as i hit the last step i throw it. Works 85% of the time. A failure is either incomplete or hit as ai throw. If i gain two yards i don't care still closer to the first down marker lol. but i love running the screen ( i only do it about 3 times a game though) I guess watching the eagles do it all the time with Westbrook makes me love it lol.

Screens were a chore in NFL 2K5, too. They just don't work like they should.

They work perfect in this game. This is the only game i have ever played when i catch the ball i see my 3 linemen waiting for me to clear some space. seriously i have a smile on my face everytime i see my 3 linemen ready to clear a path.
Also like the the real NFL sometimes your linemen will jump the gun and get called for ineligble reciever downfield. I love it.
The screen is perfect in this game. Are you think about flat routes or screens?

Yeah... this is the first game I've played where the screen is actually a viable option. The blocking sets up nicely.

July 25th, 2007, 01:42 PM
Nah, Screens. You really think they work well in this game? If anything Madden(can I say that here?) has the best screens. You can draw defenders in and get rid of it quick unlike the wonky passing engine 2K has, it is unrealistic that ANY qb takes a while to get of a quick pass over oncoming defenders on the run.
Anyways, ya screens, I cant do them :p
rockhead262

you don't know how to execute screens then. trust me screens are really easy to execute.
Darkheath
July 25th, 2007, 03:22 PM
I also think this is the most natural passing engine (as opposed to "wonky") I've ever experienced.
Really... as much as I love 2k5, I think I'd have a hard time going back now.
If Madden has easy screens, it's because of the instantaneous passing, not the overall blocking development like in this game.

100 yards passing is not very good at all. You should be around 200 yards + for a good QB perforamnce. The QB rating means nothing.

Use Marinio :) They work well with quick release. Also a faster HB is nice, so he can get away quickly in case the blocking is not there. Or a HB with ..uhmm good manuverability so he can snake around and force blocks to happen, kinda like Madden, only its more effective because its harder to click on defenders and have quick reactions in 2k.

Um.. well, really... I just call the play, take the snap, let the QB take his normal drop, stand for a couple of seconds and throw to the HB. Then the fun starts as I watch the blocking up ahead.
Now... typing that... I may have thought of what your problem could be. If you take control of the QB and try to do the dropback manually (Madden-style), in this game he takes time to get reset to throw. So that may be what's taking so long to get the throw off. Just a thought. A good, quick O-Line probably helps, too.
