2k7 online was horrible online if you play on a HDTV. Real choppy gameplay, slowed down frame rate. 2k6 was perfect online. Please make sure the online play in 2k8 runs smoooooooth just like the offline play!!!!!! That was the biggest disappointment when I got 2k7, the online play. Please fix this for 2k8!!!!!!!!

true it plays like crap online in 1080, but 720 plays fine. and I really have a hard time seeing the difference between the two in 2K7

i play in 1080i and the online is just horrible. its not laggy but everything is a second late. for example u press shoot and it will take a second before the player starts shooting. almost impossible to time shots and free throws.

What's the defination of laggy and choppy? Traditionally, online play has always had a noticeable slight time delay between the button input and the action on the screen. That's why players who play mostly or exclusively offline have such a tough time playing online when it comes to timing their shot release, and vice versa. When I play over 15 games offline against friends, my timing is always off for about 3-5 games when I resume playing online. Let me tell you, there's nothing worse than shooting 45% against a cheeser.
To me, laggy means that the overall gameplay is slowed down, because of a poor internet connection. As a result of the laggy connection, your player will not respond your button presses at all or there's a very slow response to the button press.
Also, choppy implies that your players are "warping" to different areas of the floor rather than moving with a smooth animination. When I play online, I never have a problem with framerate or choppy animinations, and I play on 1080i with a Netgear 108 Mbps wireless router, and the Microsoft network adapter. If you're experiencing laggy or choppy online play, then you may want to check to make your ISP is able to handle online play thur XBL effectively, and/or you're using the proper setup.

I am one of those people that don't notice lag in online play unless it's just a bad connection. I think what happens is that too many people try to play through a router or through wireless and you just can't do that.
I always played 2K5 and 2K6 direct to cable modem. I also played a lot of DOA online and I can't really tell the difference offline, but hundreds of fighting game players will argue that one to their death bed.
But, I think what these guys are talking about is the framerate. I don't know about the 360, but I was playing 2K7 just yesterday on my nephews PS3 and certain camera angles see a loss in frames, but it seemed pretty smooth during actual gameplay, though there always seemed to be a delay between taking a shot off the dribble or trying to pass.
I attributed that to either the wireless controllers or that Take Two put that delay in there for a reason.
The interesting thing about these new HD Systems, is that now you have basically double or triple the resolution going through the pipeline that you didn't have before. I would assume that running at the same specs, a player using a 3 megabit connection would notice a slight dropoff over someone using a 5-6 megabit connection.
I think NBA 2K has always been direct connect, so I wonder if the choppy framerate could also be a result of desynching. If one player is using 480 and another is playing at 720p or 1080i, surely there would be delay on the player using HD, particularly in progressive scan.
Just one more reason why it ****es me off that they were so quick to abandon these systems before they had all the bugs worked out.

nope.. none of your theories is correct... because 2k6 online runs smooooooth just like playing the computer in offline play... I don't know what happened to 2k7 but it definitely does not run as smooth as 2k6 online. It's not a lag issue either, it's just extremely choppy especially from the broadcast view. The only way I can play online is to put it on the 2k angle.

Yea i am tired of laggy game online man....even when you play quickmatch...you would thought the system automatically help you find the most optimal connection but there is still a slight lag and it's just frustrating to not be able to play to your potential because you can't move where you want.
I usually win when there is no lag.
Update: Now i realize lag could also be due to your system breaking down such as getting heat up!!

Seriously, I believe that the FPS of the game is 60fps when playing against a friend or computer, but when you go online, I think I have read that it went down to 30fps. PLEASE FIX THIS!!! I also play on 1080p and it just sucks. I get okay at it but definitely worsens the game play online.

I play on a Standard TV and I notice the difference. Graphics goes down a tad bit. And the gameplay seems to run faster. But I always get used to it. Play a couple of games back-to-back online and you'll be fine in no time. There are some bad connection games, but besides that you'll be good.
But i do hope they make it 1 day where when you play online you won't even be able to notice any kind of delay/lag and it'll seem and look as if you're playing an offline game.
Believe it or not, but 2k1 and 2k2 actually ran good online.... and that was with Dial-Up.

I'll only be playing full green ping connections this year. The only problem I had with 2K7 was the lag on the button presses. My shooting would be off a lot because of this. They said this years will be much smoother, but lag is a hard thing to fix they say. I just hope the button lagg is barely noticeable.

It was terrible on my SDTV. So laggy and choppy and all that. Timing was wwwaaayyyy off. Only played one game,it said my oppent disconnected,it froze up coming out of the feedback screen and I find I'm left with a loss and bad feedback because THEY disconnected. So I'd have to say online was pretty crap for 2K7. It's also the only game that's lagged for me online on PS3.

We weren't able to see any of the other street style games as the last part of the demo was used to talk a bit about the main game. On that front, Visual Concepts is looking to expand the number of signature moves from the somewhat limited number in last year's introduction to the feature. As usual, NBA 2K8 will sport online leagues for both PS3 and 360. Additionally, both the PS3 and 360 versions will run at a smooth 60 frames per second.

I'm not sure, but does this mean that it its going to run at 60fps online? I think it would be pointless to list something like this for offline if the other versions were already running at 60fps. Plus it's mentioned right after the author spoke of the online leagues in the game.
