View Full Version : Anyone else thinking of going back to 2K5...?

I don't go online (I couldn't be happier about that; I don't have to put up with the whining about "cheesing" and having people disconnect when they lose), so this game is pretty boring for me already. The single player is (I'll be kind) really a joke.

You put your team together and...that's it. No drafts, no salary cap, nothing. It's fun to go after the single season records/360 Achievements, but this no incentive to play more than 1 season on this game.

The Franchise Mode and Crib trophies were incredible for 2K5. Am I the only one who is thinking of taking a step back and playing 2K5? I hope my original Xbox holds up...

i thought about going back to 2k5 on the xbox, but i ended up starting another season in
2k8 (i don't do online either...way too many buttmunches out there).

bought Madden for the offline modes, but the gameplay blows. couldn't even finish a 1/4 of a season without going back to 2k8.
love 2k8 for the gameplay, but you're right that there is NOTHING else to offer for offliners.

just can't have it ALL in one, can we?

I never really bothered going online with any of the previous versions, but this one has been fun so far. Didn't really have a choice if I wanted any sort of replay value out of it.

Hopefully next year will see more modes added back in.

No, I couldn't go back to 2K5. The gameplay in 2K8 is waay better and there was more cheesing online in 2K5 than there is in 2k8

I stayed with APF, and i do have fun off-line even with the lack of Modes. I just create different style of teams. I do plan on going online soon once i get Xbox Live because though i'm having fun now creating these teams, i don't know how long it will last.

This is a tough call.....

I just bought 2k5 and updated rosters to get my NFL fix and I got to say I started a franchise and stated to dive headfirst into it......and dropped it quickly....

I always thought I was a franchise junkie - all I care about is franchise mode - love to trade, sign FAs, manage a team.....Until APF 2k8 came along......Now I like to PLAY a game....

I find with 2k8 game playing takes precedent and I find myself actually playing games rather than micro-managing a roster.....I find it much more fulfilling to just play...!!!!

I setup a team in its PRIME - not spend two years developing players.....and I play games, a season and the playoffs. Start over again....I dont find it stale because of the options available to setting up teams - I have developed some team setup theories and I am testing them. I test them in games and seasons.

Anyways - 2k8 allowed me to fall in love with playing the game again rather than micro-managing a team.....I dont miss franchise mode at all....

I get a jones to play my favorite NFL team when I watch the preseason games. I do have a updated roster from the OS forums I just never went further than downloading it. I might if someone makes an opening day roster and a 07-08 season schedule file once the season starts. I highly doubt it though. I like 2K8 too much to do it.

I played 2K5 about a week after buying 2K8. It was like a breath of fresh air. I don't know how anyone can say that 2K8 is better. I like 2K8 don't get me wrong, but 2K5 was far superior in almost every way.

Thats just a "what you are used to, first to play" thing......If you loved and played 2k5 alot and went to 2k8 - going back to 2k5 would certainly feel like a well broken pair of jeans - I do get that,.......I started with 2k8 (havent played a football game in over 2 years on a console and 2k4 was my last 2k series) and so I decided to go to 2k5 - I was lost - it felt like I was I lost my keys and had to stay in seedy motel overnight until the locksmith came....

Its not a case of whats better - I dont see them as that different but yet pretty dissimilar in many ways. The run game felt the same - the pass game did not whatsoever - to me.....All in all, the playcalling screens, the feel of the game and the controller designations feels better with 2k8 for me - thats not to say anyone else should feel the same way....And I think that ghoes for your post - a global generalization like "I don't know how anyone can say that 2K8 is better - 2K5 was far superior in almost every way" is strictly an opinion, its not a fact....

Now when compared to Madden, I wouldnt doubt it....

I was still in a 2K5 league after playing 2k8 for about a week. So, I went to play that league game in 2k5 and it was miserable.......the gameplay of 2k8 hands dwon the best avaliable.

I really wish I could convince you offline only guys to go online. Online 2K8 is the crack 2K5 wasn't. 2K5 had much more cheesing. 2K8 is awesome 95%+ of the time online.

You guys really need to play a few games online before you decide it's not good. I've had so many competitive games going down the wire... I literally can't explain in words HOW INTENSE games online 2K8 creates.

I've had a game with 4 overtimes, I've had 3-0 finishes (defensive battles), I've had 54-44 finishes. All were awesome and very intense.

I just wonder.. if you don't like competitive football going head-to-head with another human being.. I just... iono.. don't get it.

My brother bought Madden and I tried playing it and it was alright. I love the features of the game but I don't like the gameplay so really I don't know what to do.

Yes, playing online has been a pure treat with APF (I rarely played online before) but sometimes you just want to get deep into a Franchise and that's where I'm torn. Either I go APF and only play online for the gameplay or I go Madden and only do simming & managing. There's not a game out there that has the best of both worlds.

Yeah, I know you dont - but therein lies the statement. I dont really care to compete. I have NO desire to compete in regards to video games. I play to RELAX, not compete. I have competed all day at work. I get my adrenaline rush as a musician and real life sports and activities that take place outside....

I would love to play a game just for fun or even co-op online. But I dont care if I win or lose. If someone locks up my game or freezes or replays I will go ballistic - that will fry my wires and I cant risk that after a long day of work that someone wll actually have the nerve to waste my time with those tactics - all I have I is very limited time to play when I get time.....

I play Tiger Woods without a problem - Alternate shot,Best ball, Foursomes - all those thing are fun but for the most part they consist of teamwork - thats what excites me about online play - being on my own competing is of no interest at all - I spend too much time doing that each day already.

Honestly, I dont care to be challenged by the CPU or anyone - thats not why I play - I have enough challenges to pay rent, get gigs, mow the lawn (now thats a challenge), paint the house and whatever else I have to do each week to keep my wife and house in order.....Gaming for me is a product and verb - GAME is the key

Wikipedia: A game is a structured or semi-structured activity, usually undertaken for enjoyment and sometimes also used as an educational tool.

Thats what it is for me....Not a contest

No.
2k5 has been retired. Not bragging, but 5 Super Bowls in 5 seasons got kind of boring too. Don't get me wrong I loved 2k5, but online play was nothing more than who can exploit who. Offline got too easy. I still enjoyed Franchise mode like scouting, drafting, contracts, etc..., but my team was a little too powerful where it was getting a little unrealistic.

2k8 is fun offline. And I'm still in Quick Game mode.
I know I keep saying this, but I will join the online crew again soon.
I just have to finish organizing my plays, to avoid the delay of game penalties.
Because I can't share the books I still have to do it for the teams that came after the first team.

You have the option of what 8 teams and you are telling me there is no incentive to play more than 1 season? Hmmmm....

I would think 8 seasons would be the minimum, but that is if you utilize all your options.
It sounds like you just want Franchise Mode to me.

2k9 might bring it back along with some other nice things.
But it can't be as easy to Franchise Offline as it was in 2k5.
They will have to improve it.

For me the improvements do enough to make up for what they do not have in this game.
It is enough to make me continue the series into 2k9 and hope for more improvements and additions which I'm sure will come.

Musician? What do you play? I'm a musician too and I play keyboards.

Lorax, you can enjoy online play by having a group of trusted online players.
Players that you know if the game freezes it wasn't about losing or what have you.

I play to compete, but not at the level of some online players. If I win, I won a video game. That is it. I don't dive into the skills, I'm #1, crap that people toss out there.

I'd suggest finding a handful of people you can trust to play online and enjoy that aspect as well. It doesn't have to be a lot of people. I had no more than 10 people on my friends list at one time back in 2k5 days. I still ventured into the lobby, but I didn't play just anyone who challenged me. I looked over their card first.

Again, just some suggestions.
From one musician to another, try that new progression man. You might like it!

actually 2K5 franchise mode was hard if you turned on the practice mode where you can left weights, run, full pads or no pads, etc....i always screwed up and my players would suck that week and i could never really figure that out i think some people forgot about that and actually stuck with it and tryed to do that

did anyone ever come up with a fix for that old interception problem?
I remember there were too many INTs and we had to edit each defensive player and each QB awareness to fix that.

I'm not sure about that unless you are retired or nearing retirement or something.

Why thank you for the compliment. I just wish I was that talented.
I'm okay, but I'm no where near where I want to be.
I didn't like the CDEFGCDEFG C-E-G, E-G-C, G-C-E practice routines.
I found out later that skipping out on those was a huge mistake.
But I'm okay for what I'm trying to do.

Lead Guitarist. Sounds like you are talking PRINCE!!!
Isn't that what he plays? A lot of people who play guitar can also play piano. Do you fall in that category?

Let me stop there before that younger crowd get on us about off topic posting.

Anyway, that is the best way to go. Get those friends and just chill out and laugh at some of the crazy outcomes of the game.

2k5 was a MUCH better game than this one is.

2k5 represented what REAL football gamers wanted out of a football game.

2k8 represents an attempt to sqeeze a few last dollars out of their once faithful customers by releasing a 2k interface with madden game play.

Madden game play has always been about STAR players and MONEY PLAYS. Kind of like APF2K8 is.

"REAL FOOTBALL" (like in 2k5) was about miss matches, game planning and execution. There was no player in 2k5 that couldnt be stopped (just like the real NFL). No 2k8 Earl Campbells, Jerry Rices or Mike Ditkas. In prevous 2k games you could gameplan to your teams strengths like a REAL coach would vs this game and madden which is having to completely forget about a gameplan because you cant stop one player on one play no matter how many people you devote to trying to do so.

Simply put, its arcade style (madden, blitz, 2k8) vs "sim" style (2k5, 2k4) games.

The reason SO MANY people are upset at 2k8 is because it isnt true to the prevous "sim" style of 2k football games. The games we all loved and our only refuge agsinst all the other football arcade style games out there.

In other words, 2k sold out this year and tried to go madden on us and many of us feel cheated that they would do this and sell it under the 2k title we all respected.

There is a lot of press about cheesers, but in all honesty, if you play people with rep of about 85% or better 95% of your games will be a lot of fun and there will be not much if any cheese. I post avoid lists and what not, but it is a shame that only the bad people get publicity, because if I play 20 games online, only 1 will be bad and that is only if I do Quick Game mode. Otherwise every game will probably be fun. So give online a try. It is not even close to as bad as th preponderance of avoid lists and cheese posts make it out to be.

How do you come to that conclusion?
2k5 didn't have qb spy so you had to deal with qb runners in an unconventional sense.
2k8 provides it so, now people can run as they like and you can provide a defense for it without doing so manually.

2k5 had the corner lobs.
2k8 from what I've seen has a lot more knock down passes even with generic players.

Madden game play?
I did an evaluation of Madden07 and I do not see how you came up with that.
There is one thing offline I noticed is what appears to be a balancing act to keep games close sometimes. More so with rematch games. But it could be the team having a better feel for your game calling from your previous game.

2k8 is better football game play to me.
Overall package would still go to 2k5 because it took care of everyone's needs; offline and online.

I believe 2k9 will bring back the difference between the two and make the ultimate package.

Please tell me you are joking?
Every player can be stopped.
The problem with 2k5 is everything you had to do to stop them.

Vick running wild. McNabb running wild.
Passing downfield running backwards with way too much accuracy.
It was either Dillion, Lewis, Or George that couldn't be stopped in 2k5.

Can anyone say MOSS, TO, HEAP, SHOCKEY?????????

Ask anyone how many games the players while double teamed manually would make these miracle ghost catches. Yes ghost because they would reach through the defender stomach, catch the ball with his hands sticking out the back of the defender and bring it in back through the body.

Keep in mind you are speaking with someone who loved 2k5, but I will not claim it didn't have its faults too. It had plenty not to mention the various glitches and manipulations that existed.

I'm not the best and never claimed to be and never will claim to be, but in Franchise I won 5 Super Bowls all back to back from year 1 with NO DEFEATS!!!! Something is wrong with that picture. I could rack up 10-15 sacks a game, 400 yds passing, 200 yds running. This game there is no consistency like that in 5 minutes.

I'm sorry, but 2k8 is better game play.
When 2k9 adds in the difference then I think everyone will agree it will be the true replacement of 2k9 with regard to providing the full package.
