Just read this over at Gamespot re: NBA 2k8

Entire article here:

The relevant paragraph:
When defending, a new lock-on defensive system will help you shadow the ball carrier. To initiate it, you simply press and hold the left trigger. A small target icon underneath the player's feet begins to animate and, once it's complete, your controlled defender is locked on to the ball carrier. A player's defensive attributes will affect how long it takes for him to lock on to an opponent, as well as how aggressively he will guard him once locked on to that opponent. When locked on to an opponent, your defender will be able to more tightly cover and stay with a ball carrier--the CPU kicks in a bit to act as a defensive helper--but that isn't to say that you can't get beat. Indeed, should your defender get his ankles broken, or if you switch to another defender, you'll need to lock on to that player as well.

Leave it to the NBA 2k8 team to solve football DB controls. Great ideas are always so obvious in hindsight. This would be awesome in APF 2k9.

Even though 2K8 don't use standard "attributes" anymore they still have them. It depends on the player's abilities and the ablities of the person they're covering. The defenders also isn't supposed to know what route the WR is running either. If they did then every DB would be a cover corner. Stop trying to find ways to get everybody to play like Hall Of Famers. These players have certain abilities for a reason. Besides Hall Of Famers get burnt in their career too.

Not all players should have this ability.

Only ball hawk coverage bonus type players can do it. Other players shouldnt.

Read the last two sentences of the highlighted paragraph. It addresses exactly what you're complaining about.

this sounds like something EA would do too make the game simpler for the weaker players.

I do not like it at all.
