How much leway do i have in playing people ranked lower than me before i start losing rank for a win? In other words if im ranked 150 and play someone ranked 500 do i lose points for wining? What is the range there?

You will never lose points for winning a game no matter who you play. You just don't get as many points for playing lower ranks.

Exactly and vice versa. You will lose more points if you lose to a lower ranked player.
