View Full Version : After playing 200 games I can now say I am tired of this game....

I have played over 200+ games on-line and I am now tired of this game.
My record is 100-85-5-6 with 96% feedback:dance: I love this game. Much more than that crap EA put out. I'm just sad that I will have no football game to play that will satisfy my hardcore desire until the 09 versions come out.
I'm tired of the virtually unstoppable screen passes.
I'm tired of the dropped INT. that are thrown straight at them.
I'm tired of Andre Reed making better catches than Gold Stars.
I'm tired of the super Bronze Star TE.
I'm tired of seeing William Perry on every line.
I'm tired of seeing Barney on every defense.
I'm tired of the holding on the O line.
I'm tired of the signal readers which causes me to hear that sound all game long
I'm tired of the 4 wide formation run up the middle with Okoye.
I'm tired of the counter run working every time.
I'm tired of the over the middle passes on man coverage working all the time.
I'm tired of the quick dump passes to the RB immediately after the hike.
I'm tired of people putting Safties as the corners.
I'm tired of people moving there DLinemen to the LB position pre-snap.
I'm tired of the freeze glitches.
I'm tired of the motion completely confusing the man and zone coverage.
I'm tired of the audibles before kickoff to get the run to the direction of the kick.
I'm tired of the purposely short punts to cause fumbles.
I'm tired of the short kickoffs confusing the kick returners on who should pick the ball up.
I could go on but I'm tired of saying I'm tired:rotfl:
Anyway I am tired of all that stuff but what ****es me off more is the lack of offline play. You cannot play your friends in a face to face game on the same console. I play a lot of games offline and not being able to without recreating your team and your playbook is a pain. Offline play would make this game last at least another 5 months , to me at least.
Anyway does anyone else feel my pain?????????
Edit: Please read comment #17 on page two before commenting, thanks.

Yep. I hear ya.
I'm still enjoying the game, but there are a lot of loose ends that I hope they tie up if they make a game next season.

Well, you can play your friends offline but you have to walk them through the whole create-a-team process. If I was going to give the offline area of the game a review score i'd give it a 3 tops. The Season mode is a F-ing joke. I got bored of it after 4 seasons but forced myself through another two and then simply couldn't take it anymore. I took APF to Gamespot the other day and traded it in along with some other games and picked up Bioshock instead. It's such a shame APF08 didn't get anywhere near the level of attention and resources from 2K that Bioshock did.
And yeah, the Legend system is an ill-concieved arcade mechanic that totally kills any semblance of "sim" in this game.

There's defnitely balance issues that need to be cleaned up, no question. That's my main reason for hoping for 2K9/10, so that they have time to work out the kinks.

There are some things that need to be fixed, I don't think the Legend setup is one of them. We all have the same number and types - so it's all good. If you're thinking balance is an issue in this game - it was more so when 2K had an NFL team license. How balanced was the Pats vs the Browns three years ago? At least now, we all build our own team, with our own playbook and play the game exactly how we want - how does this cause unbalance?

Yeah I know that you have to create your team over but you can only have 8 teams per box/memory card. I have more than 12 friends that play this game. We get together every weekend and play Halo, NBA 2k7, etc...but we can't APF because somebodies team will have to be deleted to create someone team. Then you have to go through and set up audible, play book, subs, uniforms, etc...:(.
I can't wait for 2k9 but I think I am almost done with this one.

How is that any different than playing powerhouse teams all the time (Pats, Ravens, Eagles). Yes there are some things that need to be fixed but the game is pretty good the level of competition is the one that sucks. People just want to win. Everybody seems to have forgot that we play the game to have fun. At least thats why I think.
But I guess even that is different for everybody. Some might consider it fun running the same play over and over. I know the game has some problems but I can still see myself playing it because I didnt play a football game the past 3 years. Im so glad a lot of stuff has been fixed. QB running was main gripe with 2K5 that is gone. DT Glitch, DB AI. Yes the reaction of LBs to the run is slow sometimes but no game is ever going to be perfect there will always be something to complain.

I have figured out how to stop the screen pass. However need to play as a DE to do it though. If you play as a DE as soon as you see the back go out look at the Lineman if they are pulling you need to take the DE to the RB fast. There are a couple of D plays that stop it as well but if you are wrong you are in trouble cause they suck at stoping anything else.
So as near as I can tell playing DE is the best way to stop the screen

Yeah I play as the DE the whole game. Thats what I do. I run out with the screen immediately when i see it but there is a glitch in the game that cause me to freeze right where i am at when the ball is in the air going to the RB. I can be pressing "A" as fast as possible but I will be standing still until he catches the ball. Its nothing the person does its the game.

I have shut down the Earls and the OJs. I have played over 250 games and this game continues to amaze me. Best game ever! This game = 80% complete APF2K9 w/ the legends already paid for. I believe there will be the 20% effort to have 2K9 and improved some of the issues you addressed.

The best way to stop a run-heavy screen team is this. 4-3 Cover 4 Key Zone, assign both OLBs to the HB. I write this in every thread that mentions them but people still have trouble with it. Just do this and you will shut down the run and the screen. You must have some legends at OLB though- that goes without saying.
And is this blasphemy? I think Saleuma is better than the Fridge.
I don't really want to go point by point, but many of the things you mention are either pretty easy to stop or don't happen that often (like holding). As for every team having Barney, I think this is appropriate for the skill-less player who try to load up on D and have only 1 or 2 receiving options on offense. They should get shut down. I generally have at least 1 WR, 1 TE, a HB, and a QB, and a lot of times I have a second WR also so that one player on D cannot cripple my O.
As for the signal stealer, people blow this way out of proportion. I have Bartkowski so I use it occasionally. Usually I just forget. Even when I use it every play I am only able to steal maybe 3 or 4 plays a game. If you always use the same D and this is your complaint, then that is on you. Use different defenses. Some other reasons this is overblown is that 1.) I can usually tell what D my opponent is in without it (Cover 2 Man isn't that hard to figure out) or at least I can tell enough about the play to know whether the safeties are in 1, 2, 3, or 4 and enough to tell whether it is man or zone. So the signal stealer is not a huge advantage. 2.) Even when I know what the defense is, that doesn't mean anything in and of itself. I have to be able to do something about it and sometimes even I can't because he has picked a defense that is perfect for my formation. I stole someone's D one time and it was just right for what I wanted to do so while I am sitting there trying to figure out what to do he panics and changes his defense to one that is WORSE than the one he had and I got a pretty good gain. Just because someone knows what your D is doesn't mean they are smart enough to adjust to it. Probably 75% of players are not. So this may surprise you, but if you use the same 4-5 plays over and over on defense or offense, most good players know what play you are in anyway even if they don't have a signal stealer.
I said all that now here is my main point. I do not know if this is you, but I know a lot of people make just one team, which becomes "their team" and they use it all the time. Some even post it in their sigs. I never use the same team for more than 20 games or so. If I used the same team over and over I would have been bored a long time ago, but after close to 200 games online I am still excited because there are still cool new things to try. So I am watching Florida St (my school) play Clemson, and I think, wow! Clemson has James Davis and CJ Spiller; I wonder what it would be like to have that team, so I made the Tigers with their uniform (which looks DAMN good BTW) and I made them with 2 Gold HBs. Then I went through the subs and for example made a few shotgun formations with one of the backs at QB (because they actually run this- they got it from Arkansas), and also some Far and Near sets with one of the HBs at HB and the other at FB, and I put Spiller in my Bunch Tight formation in the slot to run reverses- basically just finding creative ways to get those two guys the ball the way Tommy Bowden does, and it is a lot of fun. Next on the menu I am going to see what a 3-4 team with 2 Gold ILBs can do because I have never tried it, I am working on another team with Night Train Lane, Lester Hayes and Lem Barney with Reggie White and Too Tall Jones along with Saleuma and Otis Wilson and I am going to manually control a Dlineman (which I have never tried before) and use Bump coverage and blitz safeties to see how well this works. I am also thinking of making the Arkansas team like the Clemson one with McFadden and Felix Jones; they have their mascot in this game so I should be able to get the uniform exactly right.
This has been a digression but the point is if you take one team and only use that one over and over I can see how you might get bored, but if like me you are always trying out new teams and exploring new team concepts, or when you see a team on TV that looks intriguing you make the players, uni, and try it out, then I think this game offers an almost limitless potential for entertainment. I am still enjoying it very much even after about 200 games.

Ok, I see everyone has been getting my comments confused with complaints of glitches. Yes there are some slight glitches in the game we ALL know that, but I accept those, you can't do anything about that. Every game is going to have is glitches. I am complaining of the lack of depth in the game. The lack in depth in Offensive plays, the lack of stars, the lack of off line play ability, etc.... I don't mind the screen, i don't mind the counter, etc...Its a part of the game. I am just tired of seeing it because everyone does it or everyone has the same stars BECAUSE WE HAVE NO CHOICE, these are the best plays and players available. I know its the first gen of APF and i know it will be better next year. Its like playing the same team every game over 100 times.
SO AGAIN FOR THE PEOPLE THAT MISSED IT. ITS THE LACK OF DEPTH NOT THE GLITCHES. I LOVE 2K8 OVER ANY OTHER FOOTBALL GAME AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR 2K9, I KNOW IT WILL BE GREAT. BUT RIGHT NOW I AM TIRED OF THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND OVER(PLAYERS AND PLAYS).

I don't mean any harm, but most of you are blaming the game for you being burnt out from playing the game too much.
I love the game and the sport, but I think some of you play way too many games in such a short period of time and you are burning yourselves out.
No games will last for some of you because of the pace you take in playing the game so much.

SmithSpot,
I think all the SIM players know exactly where are coming from. Which, is why I understand exactly what you are tired of as far as online play goes anyways. I think you should try the legend lobby before you give up on the game entirely. Because, it does even out the game more and makes it harder for the CHEESERS to excel.

Everyone is tired of playing the same players over and over... but I'm still addicted to the gameplay and the intense tackling situations that occur which are impossible to have in EA's 1989 engine.
But, when you find people who play with uncommon stars, it's awesome. And even when you play the same stars over and over, by the 4th quarter I don't care anymore because I'm so into the gameplay and the head-to-head competition.

You know from my previous post I agree with you on a lot of points. But I also have to laugh at you about seeing all the screens. I use whatever position it takes to stop the screen, and locking 2 LBs onto the RB will stop it. People who try to run it 10-15 times a game against me end up punting all game long.
Sorry to be silly about it, but if you always play DE and the opponent sees you can't stop his screen, 99% of all gamers will continue to crush you with it, especially if other plays they run aren't working. They see you on the DE again and think "another screen might work."

I love this game. I honest to god do. Ive probably gotten more enjoyment out of this game then any football game I can remember. But After 250 or so games, I think the end is near for me. Yes.. Ive played it a lot, and so maybe Im a little burned out on it. But this tournament brought the worst out in everyone. People found and used every little glitch, a.i. flaw, and FG block they could to try to qualify. Now the game is partially ruined for me. Its so annoying to have my kick return pick up a ball and go into an animation that lasts 4 seconds until he runs out of bounds at the 2 (the kickoff cheese), or watch his just look down at the ball after it smacks his shins and not pick it up at all. It gets old playing Campbell 3 out of 4 games and having someone literally run 40 load formation toss sweeps . Its getting old watching my safety look as though hes jumped the route, runs all the way up to the ball, and then mysteriously stops on a dime, changes direction and runs away from the ball and the whole play in some break dance looking animation giving the receiver a free TD.
After 250 games, the flaws really start to shine through in a big way. Its still a GREAT game, but needs a LOT of work yet. Im eagerly awaiting 2k9. I hope we get a LOT more legends (3/4s no one uses because there are others in the same class that are so much better. Why, for example, is Lem Barney the ONLY silver CB with coverage skill bonuses? Thats ridiculous!). I hope 2k fixes the horribly retarded DB AI. Give us plays that are built to stop out routes also. Balance the offense and defense more. The offense has a MUCH bigger advantage than the defense in this game. Its borderline comical.
Make a 2k9, please. Ill be the first in line. But I think im done with APF at this point. Too many glaring problems. a GREAT game with a better future. If 2k continues to make football games, you'll be looking at a dynasty in video football. But please fix the big problems.

For the longevity of this game and to keep like minded sim players interested I think we need to organize something. Maybe all of us who have replied in this thread alone could create a league to play. I feel for the PS3 people cause I know the pickings are slim over there but at least the 360 guys could get it going.

I've been sad everytime I login to my PS3 and see only 50 online 10 playing a game for 2K8. Makes me wish I got an Xbox 360.
But now I don't feel so silly. Because PS3 users seem to be much fun and fair to play against. Maybe its only cuz we don't have a tournament.. iono.

I haven't played a cheesy game on the 360 in I don't know how long but when you play any and everybody you have to expect that. My thoughts is the PS3'ers know that there aren't many of them so they don't want to f' up and be shunned from the few people that are playing. You have to pay attention to the feedback of the guy challenging you. Mid to low 80's and you can forget about me playing you unless I know you.

Do we have to go on and on about the position I play. I don't play other position because I can't play LB or Safty.
Here's something you may want to try:
1) Get some legend corners
2) Play 4-3 Man defense.
3) Control your SS - but don't try to pass cover. Instead, bring him up around the middle linebacker as an extra run stopper / follow the halfback on the screen / delay blitz the QB / be a general pest...
It's great fun, it's pretty effective (best defense I have used), and it's pretty easy. Because you're not really pass covering. Everytime I see the HB go for a screen, I follow him with the SS - stops it cold. Even if I don't tackle him (cause I use a generic), I make him juke/spin, which allows one of my LB's to get him. If it's a run, I plug the hole - again, sometimes I make the tackle, sometimes I just occupy a blocker and a LB makes the tackle. And the delay blitz on the QB is fun - you can usually run right in around blockers.
If you have good corners (gold / silver minimum) you can leave them on an island and they will generally perform well (they will get burned every now and again, but those are the breaks... if you have W Brown and/or L Hayes, you can really disrupt things by bumping)

The Fridge ain't that great, like he was in real life.
I usually don't have much problems gettin' to Earl or Okye anymore. I always play with the FS. And my pursuit angles are good, I jus had to adjust alil' quicker to get to the power backs so they won't break loose.
N I don't really have no problem with people who play with D-Line, especially the ones who move the DT off the line, 8 / 10 I capitalize off of that move.
But the most annoying thing is the short punt. Alot of people do that. That and people quitin' before the game really even starts. I mean, jus cuz you set your defense up in a dumb way, and I have a quick back (Barry Sanders), and I capitalize off your mistake... Doesn't make it "abusing exploits".

Ok, once again this thread has went to an advice thread about stuff I don't need advice on. I HAVE 100 WINS, there are only about 200 out of the 50,000+ people that play or played this game that has more wins than me. I don't need advice on how to win. And I play fair, smart, and clean, as you can tell with my 96% feedback.
This thread was to stress the fact that AFTER 200 GAMES it is getting tiresome seeing the same plays and players over and over. Not a thread for how to play a different position or how to stop particular plays.
For all the people that constantly give advice on how to play the secondary/LB I challenge you to play the DLine a couple games and let me know how you do. Me I come up at least 2 sacks a game, 7+ takles, and 2 hurry ups a game. According to the average DLine stats what I do is Pro-Bowl worthy, EASILY. I play my part on the defense on the DLine and some of you play your part in the secondary, whats the problem????????

I will be playing this game for a while. Probably until NBA 2K8 comes out, and maybe more after that. I just can't get enough of it. Best thing is, i haven't even played 1 game online yet. I've been playing season mode this whole time. I've created like 7 teams with different styles of play and not using the same Legends, i've been trying all the Legends out. I can't wait to plau online, i know i will have so much more fun playing against other people with all my teams...

You could play madden where brett farve impersonates michael jackson with the moonwalk and run for 2 yards and get 11 weeks out with a torn acL. Trust me i have been on all the forums i have seen it. infact i have even made threads about it helping the customers. Let me tell you it' isnt pretty.

I know where the OP comes from. I think it's more frustration than anything because this really is a good game, but there's so much little stuff in it that's just preventing it from being a great game. It's about a year away, IMO.
This game allows some creativity with teams, which is nice, but it doesn't really reward creativity. I know it's nearly impossible to balance a game so that people can have anyone they want and still be effective, but it can still get frustrating seeing every team have Earl Campbell or Young/Rice.

Look. with Earl Campbell it is pretty simple. You get to see who his players are before you accept the game challenge, and even after that you can look at defensive matchups before you kickoff. So You have every opportunity to realize they have Earl and QUIT if you don't want to play him. I am tired of people complaining about him. I can tell you that on XBox 360, at least, maybe 1 out of every 20-25 games I pay are against Earl users, no more. And ultimately if you don''t want to play against them, then don't. No one is putting a gun to your head and making you play a game vs. Earl that you don't want to play.
