How do you perform it correctly?
The manual says to pull down on the stick to tackle low, and push up to tackle high. You can also pull left or right on the stick to try for a reach tackle. And you can click the stick in to dive tackle.
Yet, when I attempt to do any of these, I just bounce off of the runner without actually slowing him down in any way. I've had Butkus bounce off of generic running backs when I try to click the stick to get a big hit.
Am I doing something wrong?

You must not be positioned properly prior to hitting the stick. Try it in practice, and play around with the positioning and angle coming into the back prior to hitting the stick - You'll find gold backs go down very easily with generic defensive players if you're positon and timing are right.

Also, you must press in the right stick to perform a big hit. Hitting down hits low, and hitting up hit high, but if you just click it inwards thats the big hit.

So why is it that when I attempt to lay a big it on someone they run right over me? Yet, if the computer uses Browner or Lloyd I cough up the ball like it's made of ice?

You have to square up and your momentum has to be coming forward at them and not from the side.
If you try to make a big hit from the side or at an angle its not effective, thats the drawback of big hit
You are better off goin for the wrap tackle when hitting from the side for safer tackles then tap A to prevent them from breaking your tackle.

The hit stick as they list in the manual is a "big play" type thing. It has a huge risk huge reward factor, this meaning that if you execute properly you can jar the ball lose or injure or fatigue the ball handler. If you don't execute, the shake off your tackle and run for a big gain.

Which key are you hitting to use the "wrap tackle"? It's probably in the manual, I'm not at home right now - thanks.

My Recommendation: Use it as a 2nd hit. Let a teammate make first contact with ball carrier, then square them up, charge up, and press in right analog when ball carrier has little momentum.

Press X to wrap tackle.
to make it more effective hold down A and charge, and then X.
