This is a repost of a thread from the main 2K8 Section:
About a month ago we started assembling a group to participate in a Sim League for NBA 2K8. We have several people who are interested in joining and have auditioned quite a few. Here are a few of the details for this league:
There will be a draft to ensure team balance.
There is a $25 entry fee
Champions will receive $500
Runner up will receive $250
Banned players or people who drop will not be refunded.
League play will start November 1st
League Draft will be held October 21st at 8 pm ET
All entry fees are due on October 15th
League Settings are as follows:
12 minute quarters
82 game season
Amount of games played must stay on track with NBA regular season. (exceptions must be communicated to admins [i.e. 3 red rings of death, family emergency, etc.])
Cheesing will not be tolerated.
Trades permitted within the Code of conduct.

Sim League Code of Conduct
We have tried to narrow down the issues to as many as we have experienced. If you have more, please contact Sovartus, Anunamus, Still Poor, or Battle Tested20, so we can review them. We promise to be more than fair if any issue arises and deal with them on a case-by-case basis.
1. Disconnects.
If there is a disconnection in the second half, it will be treated as a forfeit, and the person who disconnects will take a loss. A second half disconnect can only be reset if both parties agree. For first half disconnects, either parties must agree to replay the game, or the person that disconnected will forfeit. If the person who is winning disconnects, the game can be replayed if they choose. If they do not choose to replay it, the person who disconnected will take the loss (even though they were winning). In the event of a disconnection, contact an administrator, and let us know what the reset decision is. We will contact the other user to verify and reset the game.
2. Pause Time.
There is normally 5 minutes of pause time allowed. You cannot take a win if your opponent’s pause time runs out. You must always grant more time at least once. It is proper for users to grant as much time as needed to attend to match-ups, subbing, and settings. People have lives, children to attend to, the door, important phone calls, and the like, so please understand. In the event that you must pause, make sure you let someone know what is going on before you disappear. A pause violation will result in a loss and can lead to banishment if repeated.
3. Bickering and unsportsmanlike conduct.
This type of behavior will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, posting angry notes on the league forum about another player, being rude or distracting over the microphone during a game, free throw pausing, giving negative feedback, and quitting. Do not quit unless you have to leave. Do not post messages about the way another person plays in the league forum. If you have problems with another player contact an administrator. Any reports of this type of behavior will be investigated and can cause banishment.
4. Offensive Names and Images.
Please do not post offensive images or messages on the forum or to other players via Xbox Live, MSN Messenger, or by phone. Many of the players in the league have children, religious beliefs, or may be women. Please take other’s feelings into consideration.
5. Trades
All trades involving players rated a 79 or lower must be within 3 overall rating points, even for multi player deals. So if you are trading a bunch of players, break out your calculator.
Here is an example:
Team A wants to trade Player 1 rated 79, Player 2 (71), and Player 3 (69) = 219
Team B gives up Player 4 (72), Player 5 (67) and Player 6 (77) = 216
This trade would be approved since it is within 3 Overall Rating points.
Any trade involving a player 80 or higher must be an exact trade.
***Hopefully 2K sports have taken care of the cheese issues in 2K8 but in the event that they aren’t, here are a few behaviors we prefer not to experience and the principals behind them from 2K7.
Running in circles to get to the hoop
We all know that getting to the hoop is the easiest way to score. The shot percentages near the goal are highest. However, this is a league for people who want to experience games as close to the real thing as possible which makes this very unrealistic. Best rule of thumb is to ask this question: “Would this player do this in real life?” Actually, according to www.82games.com less than 5% of all NBA shot attempts are dunks. You can best believe the league dunk attempt slider will be at 5.
Three Pointer Jacking
If you shoot 30 three pointers and hit 15 and your opponent shoots 30 two pointers and hit 15 you will win by 15. Good strategy but again it is not realistic. Golden State and Phoenix shot the most threes a game last season at 24 attempts. That’s 6 attempts in a 12 minute quarter. If you are jacking up 30+ a game, you are cheesing. There are exceptions like trying to win in the final quarter, a shooter gets hot, or overtimes but it should still average out to 25 or less a game.
Trapping and Pressing
Some people like to full court trap and press a majority of the game. Although there is a way to overcome this tactic, it is extremely annoying. It also causes unrealistic game play and high scores. The principal behind it being a cheese is that it takes advantage of the computer AI. First of all, there isn’t a team in the NBA that traps or presses like that. Secondly, in real life the open offensive player would come to the ball for help. This is not the case in the video game world.
Next, the most annoying tactic is bringing a second defender to trap (double team) and then switching to a third defender to play the passing lanes if they try to pass out of it. That is unrealistic video game stuff a.k.a. cheesing. There are no restrictions to trapping and pressing but we ask that you use it strategically and not as a means to play defense. Examples of strategic pressing and trapping are to cut into a deficit, speed up the tempo, or to force a team to go to a smaller line up.
Playing the Passing Lanes
Some users like to watch you handle the ball, notice which direction you are facing and position his defender in between you and a potential pass option for an easy steal. Although bounce passes and Icon Passing can defeat his tactic, it is still annoying. The principal here is that there is an invisible force field that surrounds each player and if the ball gets near the field, it will bounce off and fall to the floor. Since there are no wrap around passes or pass fakes, the defense has an unfair advantage. Once again, a person simply is taking advantage of a programming flaw.
On The Ball Defense
Due to online lag in 2K7, sometimes it was nearly impossible to guess where a ball handler was going so many felt it necessary to let the computer handle that. The problem occurs when it becomes an excuse to play the passing lanes. A.I. in NBA 2K8 may correct this issue with the Defensive Assist feature so we will have to wait for game release to be sure. (To be updated)
With the addition of the Defensive assist feature it is required that all members play on the ball defense. Lane camping is not allowed. Switching to a shot blocker after being beat off the dribble is ok.
This year’s game should be interesting to see how defense, among other things, have been improved. Many of these concerns may have been addressed so we will have to wait to see.
Points in the Paint
There will be no restrictions to the amount of points that can be scored in the paint. We understand that many players tend to drive and score but restricting the number of points isn’t fair. Many teams that will have a dominant big man like Yao, Shaq, Tim, Amare , and the like, will depend heavily on post play. These teams should not be at a disadvantage because of paint restrictions.
Fast Breaks
There will be no restrictions on fast breaks at this time. Long balling as an offensive strategy however; will not be tolerated unless you are being pressed.
FAQ’s
How long are the quarter minutes? 12
What will be the Playoff Format? We will stick with the normal NBA format consisting of the Eastern and Western Conferences. Top 8 in each conference will be seeded according to the final standings and regular season series.
How are prizes allocated? Winner gets $500 and Runner up get $250. This amount could be more depending on people who drop and new additions pay.
What is the entry fee for people who take someone's place? It will be prorated against the number of games left (i.e. if 20 games of been played the person would only pay $18.90 [$25/82 =0.304 82-20=62 62x0.304=18.90])
What happens if you drop? You will not be refunded.
What happens if your Xbox breaks, TV breaks, game breaks, die, hospitalized, robbed and things like that? You can either be refunded a prorated amount or given a time frame before you are automatically replaced and refunded.
What if you die? Don't speak that..... I rebuke that.... lol. How will people get paid? My fiancé will pay them or Anunamus and DArrah are my brothers they can handle it.
Will everyone need a Pay pal account? No, we will accept money orders but they must be in before October 15th
Will there be a preferred instant messenger? Probably MSN since it is attached to Xbox Live.
Will phone numbers be required? They are not required but preferred.
Is participation required on the league page? Yes

Well, it's coming down to the deadline for people who want to join the Sim League. All entry fees must be in by October 15th. There are 28 people who have already auditioned for the league and paid their fee to secure a spot and team. One payment is pending which will leave 1 open spot. Here are the details for the league (http://www.2ksports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137324)

Seems kinda silly to make your code of conduct based on 2k7. I personally can't wait to use off ball control to abuse those guys who play off ball d to try and cut off passes... just take control of the guy they should be gaurding and head to the basket... and as far as running Bronny around in a circle until he dunks... good luck with that this year.
Wish I could play in the league... I imagine the lag being in Hawaii wouldn't work out.

Actually, we did that so that we could begin screening the type of gamers we wanted in the league. In order to actually get people to understand what kind of audition this would be, we had to post about 2K7. 2K8 isn't out yet so we have to work with what we have.
If we waited until Oct. 2nd to start filling the league it wouldn't happen.
As for you living in Hawaii, I don't think it's going to matter. If you want in on the league, let me know and you can audition.

I would be very interested in a league where everyone is this into it. Add me and we can play.
How would I send the $25, though? Just clear that up for me, and how we get paid (doubt I would be) and I'd be clear... I would really like in, though.

You send the money via paypal (which is the easiest and fastest) or by money order though the mail...
I send the winners the money via the same.
You must still audition and first come first serve on teams. Sooner you join, the sooner you can get in.

No way... this league is bound for failure. People are going to easily resort to cheesing and unfair tactics seeing as though money is on the line.
From the get go, agreatplyrfromtx is not sim. His game consists of taking it to the hole for his first offensive strategy, and then if that fails, he tries the 3 with Ginobili or Bowen. No mid-range game at all. If people like this are in the league, it will go down in shambles.
Also, ANUNAMUS I remember was three-jacking with Redd like crazy in last year's league. Unless he's changed his ways, do you really trust him to play a sim game?

Analnamus is his brother, so the chances of him being booted are, ohhhh... slim to none. :p
It's yo boy D Arrah isn't much better, but again... brother, so he won't be booted either.
And Doddage, you are correct, agreatplyrfromtx isn't sim at all. Triple double machine with Duncan, with a high of 19 assists in one game in one of those leagues... I don't even remember which one. lolol.
Cool concept, but it will never work. And in the end, a bunch of people will wind up being ripped off. So to those who have paid already, kiss your mommy's 25$ down the drain.

I did notice that I don't know you. however, I've played agreatplrfrmtx a few times and his game was sim. Working your offense from the inside out is real basketball strategy. UCLA dominated with big men. The Lakers won with Kareem and Shaq. Doddage, I watched your game vs. Anunamus and you were winning by 30 in the 4th. He was shooting to make a run and when it didn't work, he benched Redd so don't exagerate. D Arrah is one of the most sim players I know so that's an empty comment, get your facts straight and so some proof.
You cats kill me hating on people who are doing something positive. If you aren't interested move on but be mature about it.
I noticed that you had nothing to say about my game and I'm the main admin.
Oh and fyi cheesey play tactics will get you booted. Lastly, financially, I'm good so I don't need to scam for a measly $750. That's little kid thinking.

I realize what working your offense from the inside out is, believe me, and seeing as I know that, I can tell you that's what AGFT does NOT do. Yes, he tries to get the close look first, and if that fails, he usually has an open mid-range shot, which he DOESN'T take but instead tries to go for the hole again. If ALL THAT does not work, then he goes for his outside game with one of his good three-point shooters. I'm not lying man....

Impressive that you remember that game. But if you really remembered it, you would have known that ANUN was actually HITTING his threes and kept doing that without an offensive set. In other words, he didn't run any plays to hit those threes, he just chucked them and they went in. To me, that's not sim. If there was some logical offense that brought about that run, I wouldn't have a problem with it. And btw, he never benched Redd, he was definitely in until the end of the game. I'd remember because that was one of the games that I played well with JO.
You cats kill me hating on people who are doing something positive. If you aren't interested move on but be mature about it.
This isn't something positive man. This is bound for failure because people are putting their money on the line and some will do what they have to to win it all. I just don't see how you can trust every single person that has signed up to play a sim game when you don't know how they'll play in this circumstance. Ok, so you say that you'll kick out any cheesers. Won't they want their money back? What would YOU do in that situation? This has all the makings for a negative cause, if anything, and I feel like I need to say something about it (even if I'm not interested) because the true sim players are taking a risk of being a part of a league that is below their expectations. They shouldn't have to pay for something that they might find themselves not wanting to be part of.
I noticed that you had nothing to say about my game and I'm the main admin.
That's because there's nothing wrong with your game. You're pretty sim. But just because you are, doesn't mean that the people I've called out are. Has it occurred to you that those people are sim to YOU because you were/are the admin and you'd drop them if they DIDN'T play sim? Just a thought.
Sovartus
October 6th, 2007, 09:05 PM
Actually we have 6 admins in this league and we vote on everything. I'm not the only one who is auditioning. As for things being below someone's expectations, I think everyone has their own perspective on what a league should be. I don't see you as being the ultimate of other people's expectations. We are making a valid attempt at making a league that mature adults can have a good time with. If someone is going to have poor sportsmanship because of $25 they spent, then shame on them.
As for people cheesing, it's posted somewhere on this board that banishment results in no refund and the champs will just get a bigger reward.
Doddage, I don't know if you mean well or not but I can appreciate your opinion. I don't particularly share your perspective but you are entitled to feel however you like, and express yourself in any form or fashion. After all, this is a forum. Good luck with that.
TheDoddage
October 6th, 2007, 09:18 PM
I certainly don't mean any harm with what I'm saying. But, if any luck should be wished, it's me to you since running this type of a league is a definite risk. If you believe that it's going to run smooth and problem-free, then more power to you.
And btw, I never said or implied that I was the ultimate of other people's expectations. Don't know where you got that from. All I was saying is that it's not going to be good news for someone if they don't end up happy with the league after having paid to be a part of it. That's all.
Sovartus
October 6th, 2007, 09:22 PM
Even if the league was a league without a fee, it would have some turbulance along the way. I'm very aware of that.
Making the league this way was an attempt to attract serious players who simply want to have some fun. I really don't think it's about the money. Most of the members just want to have fun and not have all the drama. Most are actually 30 and up. I don't think the money is an issue, it's just a nice reward for winning it all.
still poorIII
October 6th, 2007, 09:39 PM
There are valid points in each argument and I have wondered some of the same things myself.
It's not that persons $25 that's the issue, but it's that big cash prize at the end. I have not been in any league that was without problems and all of those were free. Peoples very definition of sim is different so that creates problems.
What we are trying to accomplish is a dependable league with dependable players. Everybody in the league has auditioned. Now, if their playstyle changes once they're in the league, we will have to deal with that accordingly.
What we could have done is make everybody pay $25 to enter and give no prize at the end and use the money collected to have a pro do the page, make an outstanding league, and be an unbiased problem solver, but that wouldn't be cool with everybody.
If a person joins a country club, or buys a house in an area with HOA, there's certain things he has to abide by. This $25 is that, although a lot less than buying a house or a country club membership, brings that element with it. You have to abide by the rules or you're gone. That country club won't care, the HOA won't care, and we won't either. If a person is willing to pay their money to get in, which I did, then they should be willing to abide by the rules.
