Build a number of teams with different types of players, I know its frustrating, but there is no blueprint for success. Some people are balanced, some are big on offense, others load their D.
I am fortunate as I get heavily beaten with a wide variety of players and playing styles.

I've tried several different team structures. My current team, and the team i have won the most games with consists of:
Gold: OLB, CB
Silver: TE, OLB , WR
Bronze: WR, HB , QB , CB, FS, SS
My #2 team consists of:
Gold: QB, WR
Silver: TE, WR , OLB
Bronze: HB, OLB, ILB, CB , CB, FS

defense defense defense. in your 1st 5 picks you need to have at least 3 defensive picks.

Try to fill up every positions with at least 1 tier. Probably except for K and P.

Kickers are not a waste in this game. I don't currently have one on my online team but I did win a very competitive league with Jaeger on my squad.
NJake is right, 3 of your first 5 picks should be on D. It really cuts down on the cheese factor also.

Gold
1 Offensive Player
1 Defensive LB or CB or S
Silver
Tatum (unless you pick a S with your Gold then take a defensive Player)
1 Offensive Player
1 Defensive Player (CB or LB preferably)
Bronze
1 LB
1 DE
1 DT
1 CB
1 Offensive Player
1 Offensive PLayer
thats the formula for a winning team

There isnt really a "forumla" for a winning team though. It is all based on your strenghts and weaknesses. If you want a team that will be shut-down on defense, but just hold their own on offense, you choose accordingly. If you want a power house offense and a mediocre defense, then choose such a team.

i try to outscore my opponent rather then try to shut them down so my team is.
gold qb
gold wr
silver TE
silver cb
silver ss
bronze wr
bronze olb
bronze olb
bronze cb
bronze fs
bronze rb
its a pretty balenced team but the offence is amazing. and i only play a 3 down lineman defence so the d line isnt really important. i control my ss(browner) and i stuff the run with him and im ok on the pass

Split your Gold Stars evenly between Offense and Defense ( Your choice ) , use two silver's on defense and one on offense, and one/or two defensive bronze and the rest of the bronze stars on offense.

I take the opposite approach to Reppin 626 (no offense). I try to play lights out D and completely shut my opponent down. If I score 17 points I usually win.
But like Njake stated, there really isn't a formula for building a winning team. Build one that suits your play style and you'll enjoy the game that much more.

IMO.. If you want offense, select the talent positions, but don't forget about the O-Line. If QB has no time, then a Gold Wr is useless. Same for RB.. if he can't find hole, then it's over.
If you want defense, then build that line also. Talented Cbs can only cover for so long without pressure from front 4 and Lbs can't stop the run if Linemen are blocking them.
So basically, build the line for what you want.

lineman are wasted picks. i have never had any and i get sacks and my offence works very well. of course they help and are better then generics but not as good as other picks

I always take a gold QB. Quarterbacks the most important position in football. My favorite is Otto Graham.
I have a gold defensive player too, either a linebacker or a back, I wouldn't use the pick on a lineman because the silver and bronze lineman are as good as the gold ones.
With the silver picks I go two offense and one defense.
The bronze I go mostly defense except maybe one offense and I always choose a kicker (way underrated as far as importance goes not only for field goals but for field position too).
I never pick offensive lineman because you can just move around in the pocket and still make the pass.
I will usually go for a silver RB because I find the bronze ones to be horrible, and I always need a balanced offense attack.
It depends a lot on your style of play though. I'm pretty good at manual coverage so I don't spend too much time on my secondary, and I blitz too so I like good pass rushing linebackers.

lots of ways to create teams, but IMO
- OL is a wasted pick
- gold/silver DTs are garbage
- OLB is extremely important, I usually take Thomas (gold) or Lloyd (silver)
- Safeties are important
- MLB SHOULD be beasts against the run, but every time I try Butkus or Singletary or Tuggle/Carson, they are very ineffective
but what do I know, I'm not very good :D
I used to have a decent record but then it got reset to 0-0 because I didn't play for awhile. Now I've started again and I'm like 6-8 or something, but my "all defense" team is 5-2 or so. I have one bronze RB, nine defensive legends and a kicker. It's a lot of fun to win with defense.

Then you're not using them right. Reggie White gets me about 4 sacks a game. When I use my Oline team, my Rb gets about 180yds rushing. Except when I played Boffa.

For me what worked is Balance with a slight lean on Defense.
Offence: 4 legends
Defense: 7 legends

I disagree reppin...DL are very important if used right..there are a few linemen(I aint tellin)that are simply awesome. If you use them right, they will produce....guys like you who have a heavy passing game play right into my hands, especially if you have Lott, either a Gold CB or Leroy Butler, and Elvin Bethea...even if a guy passes for 200 yds,Ill get at least 4-7 sacks and he'll be throwing off his back foot all game. You wanna great passing defense?Pick coverage LBs,a DL,and RONNIE LOTT.....I put that D vs anybody

I find that hard to believe that you've NEVER been shut down before.
How many games have you played? And what do you consider being shut down?

Do you know why the o-line is a wasted pick? Because they are too good. If going up against a generic, they will sometimes push their player so far back, it opens a huge hole for a linebacker to get into the backfield.
