View Full Version : A Prime Example of Why I LOVE This Game

So, I see a bunch of angry threads and I just wanted to take a break of hearing everyone yarping and have a thread where we can voice why exactly we love or are obsessed with this game.

For me, this game revitalized my love for video games. For the last few years it's been: buy a game, play it a week, never touch it again, etc. But thanks to APF, gaming, especially the online variety, has been nothing but fun. I've never enjoyed online gaming until now. I've never been part of an online community until now. And I've never been so into a game until now.

The thing I really love about this game is what I believe the developers intended when they created the game: for people to become attached to their teams much like people do with their WOW characters and to put them up against the opposition. If you think about it, every team you face online, is in some way, a reflection of the opponent: the uniforms, the roster, the playbooks, the playing style, etc. Everything is unique. Basically, it's you bringing your team to war with another opponent's team and you never know what you're going to get.

The gameplay is great. Guys on my more dominate team (the Phoenix) like Derrick Thomas, Ronnie Lott, Lem Barney & Gregg Lloyd invigorate the rest of my Generic players and bring them to a whole new level. It's like watching a great defensive team like the Ravens or Patriots getting put in a situation where they need to be clutch and come through by either great coaching or the leaders inspire the rest of the team. My team does it all: they make defensive stands to keep me in the game, I'll see Johnny Cornerback make an amazing play against my opponents Gold Legend during clutch time because of the playcalling, the special teams will pull out a big return or block a key kick, my offense dink-n-dunks passes & runs their way to 1st downs while eating the clock, etc, it's great. My team is created and plays the way I love to see football with smash mouth offense & smothering defense. Whenever you're clicking, it's a thing of beauty and it's satisfying.

I love the strategy in this game. There's nothing better than being able to out-coach and out-play an opponent or have them do the same to you without having to resort to money plays or cheese, gamer glitches (Madden 40-yard scramble & 60 yard bombs) etc. Each game you are faced with a new look: high octane offenses, pass-smoothering defenses w/ two Gold CBs, the dreaded "Campbell offense" lol, West Coast offenses, full stacked offense or defense, etc and it takes constant thinking to stay in the game. You either impose your will on a your opponent, you adapt to their gameplan or you attempt to bait them into a key mistake. One of my favorite things is when there is a shutout at halftime yet by the 3rd quarter, all hell has broken loose with both teams scoring at will because you've finally discovered your opponent's weaknesses.

I also love how the Legends are incorporated. It takes me back to games like Tecmo Super Bowl where you have some good players, some great players and then you have guys like Bo Jackson, Lawrence Taylor, Marcus Allen, etc who are so great and peerless in talent that they are their own gameplan. These guys play like people remember them: completely dominate, completely unstoppable and just out of this world; they should because they were some of the greatest of all time. Sure some people may call Rice, Campbell or OJ cheese at times, but we all know that when we manage to stop them, its a fufilling accomplishment. Plus there is a strategy to all the legends, for every Rice, there is a Lott who can negate him; nobody is unstoppable in this game. You don't get this with Madden or any other football game.

I think what the APF developers did was amazing. They managed to bring great gameplay, heart, and competition to a football game that doesn't even include an NFL license! Enough with all the negativety! People, it is actually okay to enjoy something in this world (even with it's flaws) and to not have to complain or hate on everything that we as spoiled consumers come into contact with. So what about this game makes you happy?

Excellent post, totally agree with the interpretation of game design. It's all about you creating your own team and making it yours.

The good thing about this game is that it is you wont be playing the same 5 teams, NE, IND, DAL ect. The game play is still the best out there.

My record is 101-93 and for every great defense you beat there is that 3 legend offense who manages to Bill Belichek you. Its all about strategy. I just dont like when people tell you what strategy you are suppose to be using.

nice post!

I have seen this happen many times.

you hit the nail on the head...this is why i want this franchise to continue even if they do get the NFL liscense back...i doubt that would happen, though...i never get tired of trying new team combinations

Very well said El Greazy. I stopped playing video games when 2k5 died off. Almost 3 years of not playing any games. APF was the reason I bought an XBOX 360. For all the flaws the game may have I have a lot more fun than what I got in 2k5. I dont have to worry about the DL glitch, Network drop, QB running and a whole bunch of other BS that 2k5 have. I will admit APF is not perfect but IMO is way better than anything out there. There are some people that complain about the momentum and manually controlling players its because they were used to covering the whole field with one player. Cmon now you cant do that and thats why a lot of people are saying the game sucks.

well said, i remember on 2k5 i could cover the whole field every play with brian dawkins, now i have a decision to make when i play FS, and if i dont make the right one, i may very well pay dearly for it, but hey, thats why i play the game

I've been obsessed with football games every since the inception of online football gaming on the PS2 w/ Madden 2003. Since then every other year EA has put out a quality Madden. I have never played a nex gen Madden; therefore, for me to compare All- Pro to Madden is like apples to oranges. I know I'm getting away from the point of this thread but I want people to know my gaming experience.

What I love most about this game is how nothing is scripted. There are so many variables that can take place on any given play. Some rariities that I never thought I'd see in an online football game i.e. booth reviews for sideline cathes, Qb's arm moving forward to determine whether or not the play was a fumble or incomplete pass, gold star corner backs pushing their receiver to the ground on B n' R coverage. With old- gen football plays were limited to what could happen. Like only three things could happen on a corner route pass to a tight end i.e. incomplete, catch, interception.

All- Pro is great for how old school it really is. Throat slashing celebrations, horse color tackles just to name a few. I don't like the softer style of play that revolves around pre- madona QB's like Brady and Manning. And that is exactly how Madden plays today. All- Pro is hardcore. Just from playing the All- Pro demo I was reminded why I never wanted to play football in real life. I felt it was best to leave it to the block heads. It also helped me understand why people are so passionate about 2k football. I never played a 2k football game until a few months ago. I wished I would have started playing 2k football years ago.

Great post, Greazy.

This game is far beyond what I ever expected games to attain when I was playing NFL Football on the IntelliVision. I guess I was pretty short-sighted at the time.

Let the whiners leave if they must.

I'm right there with you. This is a GREAT game. It may be lacking here and there in features, but 2k did a great thing by making a 'strategy' based sports game. It's a huge step forward in sports gaming. Despite what others post, the game play is nigh perfect. I love the fact that guys move like they would in the real world, that their momentum carries them forward, affects how they can cut, and affects how hard they hit players. The online leagues are great as well (though 2k could maintain them better, as bugs abound). I currently participate in 2 leagues and love playing in both of them.

I just wish the PS3 would get some love from 2K. I know EA favors PS3 it seems, but I love this game too much and don't want a 360. We didn't get a patch for MLB 2K7 or were able to buy additional stadiums. Then we don't even get league web sites or any update for this game.

EA definitely favors 360, not PS3. Madden is 60fps on 360, but only 30 on PS3

When I said that EA favors PS3 its beacuse when I rented NCAA when it came out all my opponents showed up on my players met page and was able to go back and send messages or look up there names without searching the game itself. It is the only game I played that actually did that.

Another thing, I think you 360 guys can type to each other in game, right? We can't even do that. I don't want to wear a headset or hear everthing someone is doing on the other end, but would like to send a message in game once in a while.

Outstanding post Greazy. I don't understand the complainers. I have never played a perfect game. There is no such thing as a perfect game. This game is a very good game with flaws, just as other games. However, you have people complaining as if the game is unplayable. It's sickening really. People can constructively criticize, that's a good thing and it will help the developers make a better game, but this game is not a game that should be trashed the way some people trash it.

2K5 was my fav game of all time. I tried going back to it for a change of pace and found it lacking. While this game has it's faults. It is alot of fun. When I first got this game it was a mix of fun & frustration. While I hope next years has real levels. The strategy this game forces you to use can have it's moments. Usually when a game frutrates me as much as this one did (especially passing). I'd put it down and maybe play later. This game never got put down. It was like crack. I'd go back and try to see what would work.
This game has way more replay value than sum give it credit for.

My 360 bit it this weekend which gave me time to reflect on all the new-found free time I have again. I'll be without it for a month.

I like the online play. Even before the patch the game had very few glitches compared to other competing online sporting games, and post patch I cannot really think of any. Sure some players seem powered up at times, or ridiculous plays happen, but compare this to something like 2K5's inside D-line glitch or the outside glitch where almost everyone would move their DE way off the line and run in untouched, or compare this game's online experience to Madden's nano-blitzes, and this game blows them away in terms of balance and equanimity. It is the fairest game I have ever played online. I was most impressed by that because you have to really be in touch with gamers to figure out and eliminate all the glitches and cheese people sit around and figure out.

I'm with you guys on this. I'm addicted to this game. I haven't played Video Games sinnce PS1 came out and this game surely got me reeled back in.
