Program History

The Hawaiʻi Warriors football team represents the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in NCAA Division I FBS college football. The team, currently coached by June Jones, is part of the Western Athletic Conference.

Hawaiʻi has three teams that can be considered rivals—BYU, Fresno State and Boise State.

BYU had been regarded by many Hawaiʻi residents to be the Warriors' biggest rival and most high-profile game. One of the reasons for the interest in games against BYU comes from the large Mormon population in Hawaiʻi, especially on the island of Oʻahu, and BYU's success in recruiting players from Hawaiʻi. The rivalry with BYU has been largely one-sided, with the Cougars holding a 19-8-0 all-time advantage in the series and going 18-5 since 1972 when Lavell Edwards became BYU’s head coach. BYU won 10 straight contests against the Warriors from 1978 through 1988 and 6 straight from 1993 through 1998. Hawaiʻi has never won in Provo, Utah losing all 8 contests by an average score of 34 to 18.

The series has decreased in notability and importance due to BYU's defection to the Mountain West Conference in 1999. In 2001, Hawaiʻi ruined the then 8th ranked Cougars perfect 12-0 season and ended any chance of BYU earning a BCS bowl bid with a 72-45 victory at Aloha Stadium. The last meeting between the two teams was a 35-32 BYU victory at Provo in 2002. The rivalry has also been considered by some people to be one-sided on the terms of emotion. Though Hawaiʻi had considered BYU its main rival for quite some time, BYU usually did not return the favor, considering their main rival Utah.

2007 Hawaii Warriors Season Preview

http://i3.tinypic.com/43o6rdg.jpg
Colt Brennan will need to have a Heisman-esque season if he hopes to lead the Warriors to an undefeated season.

After tuning into a full day's worth of college football, a normal pigskin fan normally is not up for staying up to watch a midnight Hawaii Warriors football game.

While snoozing, they might be missing the greatest offense of all time.

Led by Colt Brennan and Davone Bess, the Hawaii aerial attack has the potential to be one of the best to ever step on a collegiate football field.

An improved 4-3 defense will also deliver punishing hits to the opposition whether it be afternoon or midnight, and the special teams unit is again looking potent.

Overall, playing in a favorable conference may lift these Warriors to a territory only recently known from an unknown university called Boise State - an undefeated season.

Hold the phone: Hawaii to open season versus Huskies, not Bears

http://i2.tinypic.com/6gog4mt.jpg
Colt Brennan and the Warriors will now face the Washington Huskies in week one as opposed to DII Northern Colorado.

Scheduling and travel difficulties have resulted in the Hawaii Warriors rescheduling their week one game to Washington as opposed to Northern Colorado.

"It's kind of unnerving, especially because we've been scheming for Nothern Colorado for a few days, but Washington is a good team and they will provide us with a challenge." Hawaii coach June Jones stated.

Aside from the September 1st game, the Warriors schedule will remain the same, with Northern Colorado now visiting in week thirteen, the final week of the regular season.

Washington Huskies..........Hawaii Warriors

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x197/Tribe2841/Florida%20Gators/collegegameday.jpg

Chris Fowler: Hello everybody, we're here in Aiea, Hawaii to preview the inaugural games of the 2007 college football season.

Lee Corso: Woo!, and I'm ready to go!

Chris: Before we get to the main attraction, let's look around the nation and predict some of the scores from the top 25.

Quick Hits

Will Cal be able to extract full vengeance from last season's loss at Tennessee? Will DeSean Jackson prove to be a fitting replacement for Marshawn Lynch? Is Erik Ainge's injured finger worse than we expected?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/teamlogos/ncaa/med/trans/151.gif @ http://assets.espn.go.com/i/teamlogos/ncaa/med/trans/259.gif

Quick Hits

The emotions will be flowing in Blacksburg...can the Hokies respond? Is Virginia Tech's swarming defense as good as advertised? Can the underrated Pirates of East Carolina play the spoiler?

Chris: And now, onto the reason all these screaming fans are behind us: Washington vs. Hawaii. Is the Warrior offense for real?

Kirk Herbstreit: I think so. Colt Brennan appears to be more mature heading into his senior season, and his interceptions, in my opinion, will reduce dramatically.

Lee: On the season, yes, but today...not so fast my friend. The Huskies have turned their program around since the arrival of Ty Willingham, and their defense looks good enough to contain Brennan and the flyin' Hawaiians.

Chris: Now moving onto the Huskies of Washington...they weren't even supposed to be playing today, and now they're taking on the explosive Warriors. What do you expect from them?

Kirk: Their senior running back, Louis Rankin, should have a field day against Hawaii's weak defense. In the end, I believe his powerful running will lead the Huskies to an upset win in Aiea.

Lee: Dream on! Warriors all the way, baby!

Predictions

........http://espn.starwave.com/i/columnists/herbstreit_kirk_m.jpg: Washington, 49-47

I don't know if this will work out...through 3 games, I'm 0-3, and Brennan has thrown 12 picks. I don't want to sacrifice my difficulty level to just win games, so this might be finished.
