Hey guys, I'll be starting a new legacy with the new University of South Carolina Upstate team. I'm going to try to make this legacy as realistic and exciting as possible.
Any tips, requests, or feedback would be greatly appreciated since this is my first legacy online.
************************************************** ************************
University of South Carolina Upstate Spartans
Coach: Nate Bell - Coach Bell was hired as the Spartans coach after last year's coach, Eddie Payne, retired. After a successful career as an assistant coach at N.C. State university, Coach Bell finds his first head coaching job with the Spartans. Coach Bell is known for his charismatic personality and teaching ability, and led some of the recruiting efforts for the Wolfpack the past five years.
Team information: Coach Bell inherits a team that went to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2005 and 2006 and won the Division II Peach Belt Conference Tournament title in 2006. The Spartans had never had a losing season under Coach Payne in Division II, but Coach Bell takes USC Upstate to the first season as a Division I school in the Atlantic Sun conference.
The Spartans return just four players who saw significant action in 2006-07. Jeremy Byrd (10.8 ppg) and Luke Payne (11.2 ppg) make up 77.5 percent of the returning offense.
Roster (click names for bio)
Returnees:
3 Jeremy Byrd (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/byrd_jeremy00.html) G 5-11 172 SR (67 Overall)
Byrd is a flashy, quick and dynamic player who is faster, grittier and more dominant on the defensive end of the court than he is on the offensive side of things. Byrd averaged 10.8 ppg last season and looks to be the steady force and team leader of the Spartans.
10 Luke Payne (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/payne_luke00.html) G 6-2 185 SR (66 Overall)
Payne is steady, workman-like and the most fundamentally sound player on the team. He is the best overall player on the team, and will face a tremendous amount of pressure to lead the team on and off the court. Payne averaged 11.2 ppg last season.
14 Nick Schneiders (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/schneiders_nick00.html) C 7-2 240 SO (56 Overall)
The German born center became a crowd favorite last year and averaged a mere 2.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game off the bench. He will have to quickly mature since it is likely he will start at center. His development will be a key factor to watch. His size could present huge problems for opposing conference foes, if he can quickly acclimate himself to division I play.
4 Zac Rich (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/rich_zac00.html) G 6-1 185 JR (59 Overall)
Averaging 4.3 points and 1.1 rebounds per game in little playing time last year, Rich looks to add his shooting touch to the Spartans offense again this year. Rich is the most pure shooter on the team, and hopes to fill in the sharpshooter role, but will have a hard time finding minutes with the talented and experienced backcourt.
Newcomers:
21 Mezie Uzochukwu (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/uzochukwu_mezie00.html)G/F 6-5 205 FR (62 Overall)
The smart, athletic wingman looks to break into the starting lineup. A slashing forward with good leaping ability and decent shooting ability. His growth could be a big factor this year.
23 Bobby Davis (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/davis_bobby00.html)F 6-6 225 JR (60 Overall)
This JUCO JR looks to bring some size and rebounding ability to the Spartans and he has good speed for a PF. Will likely be a roleplayer and compete for playing time as an undersized PF.
11 Rashawn Brailsford (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/brailsford_rashawn00.html) G 6-2 170 FR (57 Overall)
Brailsford was the most highly touted recruit from last year and looks to spell Byrd at the Pg this year for the Spartans. Could be a key player in the future as Byrd graduates after this year.
20 Josh Chavis (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/chavis_josh00.html)G 5-8 150 FR (61 Overall)
An undersized, speedy PG that will likely see little playing time this year. Could push fellow freshman Brailford for the #2 PG duties.
24 Justin Houser (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/houser_justin00.html)F 6-9 215 JR (56 Overall)
Along with Bobby Davis, another JUCO Junior PF with decent size.
40 Greg Maugle (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/maugle_greg00.html)F/C 6-7 205 FR (56 Overall)
Maugle has decent fundamentals, but lacks athleticism. Early reports are that he will be redshirted or that his scholarship may be revoked.
44 Rory Spencer (http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/spencer_rory00.html)F 6-7 200 FR (57 Overall)
Spencer provides even more depth at the F position and is long and athletic. His speed as a big man is impressive, but needs work to develop into a Division I player.

I'll post the scores of the players and a breakdown of each tonight or tomorrow, along with the Spartants schedule and first game.
This should be a very challenging team to make successful (especially since it is their first season in Division I), and I'm going to be playing at All-Conference or higher and letting the chips fall where they may.

Midnight Madness
Coach Bell opened midnight madness in G.B. Hodge Center in Spartanburg, S.C. with a dunk contest featuring newcomers Mezie Uzochukwu, Bobby Davis, and Rory Spencer. When asked why his veterans weren't allowed to participate, Coach Bell replied "Well, they can't dunk. Seriously."
Midnight Madness for the Spartans also included a Green vs. White game in which Luke Payne led all scorers with 18 points for the green team. Bobby Davis scored 12 points and Jeremy Byrd scored 10. The Green team featured mostly veterans and won easily over the White, 67-46.
Coach Bell held a press conference later in the afternoon:
"I'll be honest with you guys, because that's what I do. This season will be very challenging for all of us and my realistic goal for this season is to finish above .500 in conference play. Obviously I want to win the conference, go to the NCAA Tournament, and become the first 16 seed to win it all. But we have to be realistic and this transition from Division II to Division I will not be easy."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Utah (80 overall rating)
Utes hold off Spartans!
The Utes got out to an early lead, but the Spartans made a rally late in the first half. The halftime score was 30-22 in favor of Utah, and big man Neville had 8 points and 7 boards in the first half for the Utes.
In the second half, the Spartans continued to stick around and the game was closer than the score would seem. The Spartans employed a 2-3 zone that frustrated the Utes and shut down Neville, who was dominating in the first half. The final score was 70-58 Utah.
For the Spartans, Jeremy Byrd finished with 10 points and 4 assists, and freshman center Schneider finished with 8 points and 5 rebounds. Fellow freshman Uzochukwu also tallied 9 points on 3/10 shooting. Star player Luke Payne struggled with his shot all game long and had 8 points on 4/13 shooting including a dismal 0/7 from 3 point range. The Spartans shot 47% overall, but were only 2/16 as a group from beyond the arc and only 8/16 from the free throw line.
"We played a pretty good game tonight. Obviously there are things to work on...our shooting, free throws...I mean if we hit a few more of those free throws, then you have yourself a close game tonight. I really can't complain about our performance though, as Utah is a good squad and it was our first game. We'll look at the tape and likely will juggle our starting lineup a bit, but other than that I'm pleased."
The starting lineup for the game was:
PG - Jeremy Byrd
SG - Luke Payne
SF - Mezie Uzochukwu
PF - Rory Spencer
C - Nick Schneiders C
"Schneiders came in a gave us great production inside...he really was effective. I'm encouraged by the play of both Nick and Mezie. They both played very well tonight. The other players need to realize that they have to work for their starting position. Nothing is a given."

Recruiting Update
I have 4 scholarships available for next year and I'm going to be looking for a SG, C, PF, and SF in that order. Shooting is an obvious flaw of this team, and Payne and Byrd, the two best shooters, are seniors. Also, Schneiders did fair the first game, but I'm not too keen on my big man being a goofy, slow, 7'2" guy who can't jump.
List of Senior recruits initially in order:
1) Starkey SG 3*
2)Shelton SG 3*
3) Hite C 3*
4) Hoskin PF 3*
5) Turiaf SF 3*
6) Fuller C 3*
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Akron Zips (76 overall rating)
Spartans nipped by Zips!
Spartans starting lineup:
PG - Jeremy Byrd
SG - Zac Rich
SF - Luke Payne
PF - Rory Spencer
C - Nick Schneiders C
Coach Bell experimented with a different starting lineup against the Zips, preferring to go with a smaller and quicker lineup. The Spartans and Zips traded the lead for much of the first half and went into halftime tied at 29 each. However, coming out of halftime, the Zips were on fire and scorched the Spartans with 7 three pointers and 39 points while holding the Spartans to only 14 points in the second half. The final score was 68-43.
For the Spartans, Zac Rich tallied 14 points in his first start of his career and sophomore big man Nick Schneiders added 8 points, 9 boards, and 7 blocks against the Zips. Byrd and Payne both finished with 7 points. The Spartans were plagued by poor shooting in the second half and had 15 turnovers for the game.
"We're still working with the guys in practice on fundamentals and we're experimenting with the lineup right now, but obviously we got outplayed today. The players and our coaching staff really need to work hard to find some chemistry on this team and find some identity. And play some better basketball....that would help too."
(I'm very impressed with Schneiders so far. He's not great, but in two games he's scored 16 points and 14 rebounds. For a team like this, that's good production from the center. Payne just can't get his shot down, so I gave Rich a chance at the SG spot and he produced a big 14 points, but only managed 1/6 from three. Spencer has only scored 6 points in two games, and only 7 rebounds. I'm going to think about replacing him and getting a new PF in the lineup. Not sure what to do about the SG situation and Payne though.)

Ok, how am I doing so far? Too much information? Not enough? Am I leaving anything out?
Should I bench Payne, who is supposed to be my star, for his poor shooting? Stick with Spencer at PF or try one of the others?

Good so far. However, 2 games into the season and you bench your best player. I'm a basketball coach and I would stick with my star player. Shooters have to continue to shoot the ball. Maybe you should run a play for him that will get him to the basket, maybe draw a foul and get some freethrows. Sometimes all a shooter has to do is see the ball go in and the freethrow is the remedy. Payne can also get involved on the defensive end until his shooting comes back. You can't bench your star player this soon.
Just my 2 cents. You are doing a great job.

rbrown62, I hear ya. Basically, I'm thinking about moving him to the SF spot and putting in Zac Rich in the SG spot. Rich seems to be the sharpshooter on the team...and while Payne has a better game in all other areas, I really like a sharpshooter in at SG. Plus this will hopefully give me a faster lineup and I can utilize Byrd's speed at PG and push the tempo a bit and get some fast breaks.
Games #3 and 4 will be posted this afternoon.

USCU Spartans (68) vs. Portland St. (74 overall rating) (overall ratings for each team)
Spartans lose 55-68 in Consolation game!
PG - Jeremy Byrd
SG - Zac Rich
SF - Luke Payne
PF - Bobby Davis
C - Nick Schneiders
In the consolation game of the BP Top of the World Classic Tournament, the Spartans couldn't keep pace with Portland St. Byrd and Rich both helped pace the Spartans, who were down 45-35 at halftime.
Byrd scored 12 points with 4 assists in the loss, and Zac Rich again had another good game with a team high 14 points. Schneiders continued to hold down the inside with a steady 8 points and 12 rebounds, while JUCO transfer Bobby Davis had 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.
The player of the game was Paul Hafford for Portland St. who lit up the Spartans for 26 points.
"We just couldn't stop Hafford. We knew coming into this game that he was their best player, but it didn't matter what we did....zone, press, man, two men. He just caught fire and we couldn't put it out."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Tennessee St. (72 overall rating)
Coach Bell and Spartans tally first win, 61-57!
PG - Jeremy Byrd
SG - Zac Rich
SF - Luke Payne
PF - Bobby Davis
C - Nick Schneiders
Coach Bell finally got his first win of his college head coaching career, and the Spartans got the first win of the season over Tennessee St despite trailing at the half at 33-28.
SG Rich led all scorers with 15 points and Luke Payne added 10 points for the Spartans. But it was German center Nick Schneiders who dominated the game, with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Bobby Davis also added a strong game in his second start with 10 points and 2 rebounds.
The Player of the Game was Nick Schneiders for his great interior play.
"This is just a great feeling. The guys are all celebrating, everyone scored in this one I think....just a great game. My guys were down at the half, but I told them that if we just kept fighting and made a few adjustments that we could steal this thing, and they never gave up. Nick Schneiders game was just off the charts, and Bobby Davis has filled in beside him inside very well. I think much of Schneiders success is due to Bobby's ability inside. They can't double team Nick with Bobby in there."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. UNC Greensboro (72 overall rating)
Spartans can't build winning streak!
Coming off the first win of the season, the Spartans can't continue the feeling playing at UNC Greensboro. The UNCG defense frustrated the Spartans all game long with a strong 2-3 zone and jumped out to a quick lead and a 34-18 halftime score and finished the game at 61-55.
Bobby Davis continues to be effective inside with 12 points and 7'2" center Nick Schneiders gets another double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Reserve PF Justin Houser also broke through for 13 points and 7 rebounds in limited minutes. But the strong frontcourt play of the Spartans was offset by the poor shooting of the guards, who combined for an atrocious 3-19 for 3 point shooting.
"UNCG just came out and dictated tempo with their zone defense, and really just punched us right in the face. We tried to shoot out of it, and you saw how that went. In the second half we tried to attack it inside, which worked much better, but by then the game was decided. We need our backcourt to shoot better from the perimeter or it's going to be a long season. The big guys really continue to impress me and they're just simply playing harder than anyone else out there. They'll continue to get big minutes, including Houser, who was a pleasant surprise."
The USCU Spartans (1-4) face Cinncinati and Wake Forest away next week in the hardest tests of the year.

************************************************** ************************
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Cincinatti Bearcats (80 overall rating)
Bearcats hold on for win over Spartans!
In an unusual game that saw 12 lead changes, the Bearcats struggled to fend off the fiesty USCU Spartans. Cincinatti shut down the Spartan's perimter offense early, and then Spartan center Nick Schneider went down with a knee injury, but the Spartans somehow managed to hang with the Bearcats. The score heading into the locker room at halftime was 31-28 Cincinatti, but the bigger, more athletic Bearcats pulled away at the end of the game to finish 70-61.
Senior guard Luke Payne did not start the game and Sophomore center Nick Schneider left with an injury after only three minutes. JUCO Forward Bobby Davis had another stellar game inside with a game high 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Byrd put in a solid 8 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals. The Spartans shot 39% from the floor and 3-15 from beyond the arc, but managed to stay close with surprisingly good defense.
"Tonight was a tough loss, because we were so close. But I'm encouraged by what I saw, especially considering that we played without our two highest scoring players. That just goes to show you how interchangeable this team is.
Nick Schneiders injury does not look severe. We'll have to examine it, but I think he'll be back on the court soon. Luke Payne did not start and did not play the first half of the game because he broke team rules."
When asked what team rules Payne broke, Coach Bell simply said "He was late for the bus. Twice."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (76 overall rating)
Deacons pound on Spartans!
Two days after giving the Cincinatti Bearcats all it could handle, the Spartans barely even challenged the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest.
Playing without big man Nick Schneiders for the second game in a row, the Spartans failed to stop the interior game of Wake and allowed an uncommon 15 turnovers due to pressure.
With Schneiders out, the Spartans looked to their senior leadership for scoring. Senior PG Jeremy Byrd had another stellar game with 14 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals while senior SG Luke Payne finally exploded for 15 points.
"It's good to see Luke finally assert himself on the offensive end and knock down some shots. Other than that, I saw a lackluster performance from our team. Maybe we were just tired from the emotional loss of the Cincinatti game, but with conference play looming ahead, we have to be tougher emotionally."
The Spartans continue in nonconference play next week, at SMU, with a 1-6 record.
USCU Spartans (68) vs. SMU Mustangs (76 overall rating)
Spartans get second win!
The USCU Spartans used sparks from the bench to knock off the SMU Mustangs 56-53. The Spartans started off fast out of the gates, and intense defense led to the halftime score of 33-23. SMU challenged and even took the lead late in the second half, but the strong Spartans bench took over and put the Spartans on top.
Center Nick Schneiders finally started after suffering a knee injury and tallied 5 points and 5 rebounds. True freshman Mezie Uzochukwu got his first college start and shined with 7 points and a whopping 16 rebounds. Backup PG Josh Chavis and backup SG were both on fire from long range and tallied 13 points and 9 points off the bench, respectively. Steady senior Jeremy Byrd again finished with all-conference type numbers: 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals.
"I'm awfully excited about this win. So many guys stepped up big here tonight, it's unbelievable. I mean for Uzochukwu to grab 16 rebounds from the SF spot in his first career start...that's huge. This game will certainly make me and my staff rethink our lineup and playing time. Who will start and play during conference play is anyone's guess, and this just goes to show how versatile this team is. It's great to have Nick Schneiders back in action, that much I do know. With him healthy and our bench firing on all cylinders, I think we can surprise some teams."
The Spartanshead into the State Farm Sun Bowl Classic in El Paso, Texas to play UTEP in their 9th away game of the season. The Spartans are now 2-6.

Yeah, I think once I get into conference play and once I get some home games I can win a few more hopefully.
The Atlantic Sun conference teams are all around 67-72, which is much more manageable. Playing on AA and not cheating or anything, I just can't will this team past teams that are much better than we are, which is a good thing. It's how it should be.
I'm glad Payne is finally shooting a little better (before that last game he was around 26% from three), but Rich and Chavis also are lighting it up. Who to start...who to start...

Recruiting Update
Coach Bell has been focusing in on a few key targets, rather than widely spreading his time around. Some critics argue that Coach Bell is setting his sights too high and risks striking out on the recruiting trail, since he is only going after 3* recruits in his first year.
List of Senior recruits in order:
1) Hite C 3* - 6'10" big man with good rebounding and offensive skills. USCU is top school and Coach Bell has offered a scholarship.
2)Shelton SG 3* - Lit up the ABL league with 22 three pointers. Coach Bell offered but is currently the #2 school on his list.
3) Turiaf SF 3* - Averaged a double double in the ABL. Has been offered by Bell and UNC Greensboro to make this a league recruiting war. USCU is #2 behind UNCG.

USCU Spartans (68) vs. UTEP Miners (71 overall rating)
State Farm Sun Bowl Classic - El Paso, Texas
Spartans stun UTEP!
Starters:
PG - Jeremy Byrd
SG - Zac Rich
SF - Mezie Uzochukwu
PF - Bobby Davis
C - Nick Schneiders
In the first round of the State Farm Sun Bowl Classic Tournament, the Spartans stun the Texas crowd and UTEP in an exciting, high scoring game. Utep led most of the game including 39-37 at the half, but the Spartans caught fire and shot lights out, scoring 47 points in the second half. The final score was USCU 84, UTEP 81.
Uzochukwu had a dominating game in his second start, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Senior PG Byrd played a complete game with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Center Nick Schneiders added 12 points and 5 rebounds and was looking to have a monster game before he reinjured his knee late in the first half. SG Rich also added 10 points, all in the second half.
The player of the game however was Stefon Jackson for UTEP, who seemed to be unable to miss. Jackson scored 33 points on 61% shooting in the loss.
"This is a great win for this university, and it's very encouraging to see our offense explode like that, especially considering the injuries we've suffered. We've got to get healthy again before conference play starts. Schneiders knee injury came back and bothered him around halftime, so I had to sit him. That's the one that most concerns me."
Senior Luke Payne did not start for the second time this year, and junior SG Zac Rich shot well at the end of the game in his place.
The USCU Spartans face Buffalo in the Championship game of the Sun Bowl Classic Tournament tomorrow.
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Buffalo (70 overall rating)
Spartans win third in a row to win Sun Bowl championship!
Starters:
PG - Jeremy Byrd
SG - Luke Payne
SF - Mezie Uzochukwu
PF - Bobby Davis
C - Justin Houser
Coach Bell and the Spartans bullied Buffalo 72-55 to win the Sun Bowl championship. The Spartans continued to pour on the points today, combined for 155 total points in the two game tournament. Buffalo lost the lead at 10-9 and never recovered, entering halftime down 8 points.
Mekie Uzochukwu continued his hot streak, leading all scorers with 15 points. Luke Payne played a productive game, scoring 13 points.
The Player of the Game was Uzochukwu for his efficient shooting and defense against Buffalo.
"Hey, it's a great day when you win any tournament. This might be the only tourney win we can expect for a few months at least. All kidding aside, our kids played a great game today both offensively and defensively. I like our team, and I'm excited about entering conference play. We have two tough road games ahead, and we'll just try to continue to do things right and hopefully be competitive.
The Spartans get a few days rest before heading to play both Duquesne and 25th ranked Iowa St. next week. The Spartans have a 3 game winning streak.
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Duquesne Dukes (82 overall rating)
Dukes beat Spartans with buzzer beater!
In a tight, low scoring affair, Keiron Achara of the Dukes hit a 3 pointer to win the game with 3.2 seconds remaining. The game had 13 lead changes and saw three players foul out by the end. A brief scuffle by the players in the early second half ended in technical fouls on both teams.
Jeremy Byrd had 15 points and Mekie Uzochukwu again had an outstanding day, tallying 10 points and a monster 19 rebounds.
"What can you say...we just got beat. We played a great game against a good team, and they just found a way to win. That's what good teams do.
The scuffle? I'm not going to talk about the fight. Some the players just lost their cool and it got sorted out. We'll take disciplinary actions in-house, but we're not discussing details."
Center Nick Schneiders remains on the injury list with a right knee injury. The USCU Spartans are now 4-7 after having the 3 game winning streak snapped and head into the final nonconference game of the year against #25 Iowa State.
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Iowa St. (81 overall rating)
Iowa St. trounces Spartans 81-61!
After sticking with Iowa State for the first half (33-30), the Spartans couldn't contain the explosive Iowa St. offense. Jiri Hubalek scored 22 points for Iowa St in the rout and was player of the game.
For the Spartans Zac Rich scored 13 off the bench and starting SG Luke Payne scored 12 points. Uzochukwu also scored 12 points with 7 boards.
"Iowa State is a very good team, and they just outgunned us tonight. We were outmanned. Our kids played a great first half, but we just got tired and couldn't sustain it. I'm pretty pleased with our play overall and we should be fine heading into conference play."
The USCU finished the nonconference schedule 4-8 including winning the Sun Bowl Tournament. Center Nick Schneider has been cleared to play in the first conference game against East Tennesse State, who was picked by the media to win the Atlantic Sun.

I'm not sure what to do about my "star" Luke Payne. I have been trying to stick with him, but Zac Rich is simply shooting lights out, and I can't see Payne starting over him. He's just not playing that great and is a streaky shooter...
Also, it'll be good to get Schneiders back in the game at center. The big man really helps our defense with his ability to block and his rebounding is good. Our whole team just plays better with him in the game even though he's not a superstar or anything. Definitely hurt my chances the past few games not having him.
I'm not too concerned about my record...4 wins with this team already is decent, especially against the good competition I've played on the road.
I think the starting lineup for conference play will be:
PG - Jeremy Byrd
SG - Zac Rich
SF - Mezie Uzochukwu
PF - Bobby Davis
C - Nick Schneiders
With my bench basically being:
PG - Josh Chavis
SG - Luke Payne
SF - Luke Payne
PF - Rory Spencer
C - Justin Houser

exciting season so far. Some tough losses, but winning the State Farm Sun Bowl should provide some confidence going into conference play. You might be able to sneak up and suprise some teams.
I know the pains (no pun intended) that you are going thru with your "star" Payne. In my legacy last season, I had a preseason all-american that basically did nothing all year. He just got a big head and had an attitude problem all year. Unfortunately, no one stepped up consistently to fill that leadership role. Ride the hot hand (Rich) as long as you can. Maybe Payne will get the message and step up to fight for his job back!
Very realistic legacy! keep up the good work!
Hope you are able to sign a couple of those 3 * recruits - that will sure help a lot next year. Hite might be able to spell that goofy slow guy who scores all the points. :) (reminds me of the Federman/Roth years at Tennessee -- "which way did the ball go? doh")

yeah I had the same problem in my second year at Princeton. Had junior pg who had a streaky year as a sophomore and his junior year didn't do much. Brought in this speed guy and he basically had the same stats every game with less time so after a month I benched the Junior and started the freshman.
Yes its going to hurt your chemisty for a while, but in the long run it will be better. Very nice legacy though and painful lost to Duquense. Can't believe they were an 82 overall.

Yeah, I got to play with Hite some in ABL, and he's actually pretty good. I'd rate him a fairly high 3* to low 4*. If I can land him, he'd eventually be the best player in the conference I bet.
That's what this team really needs, some new recruits. :-)
We're streaky as all heck, and I don't have a reliable weapon on offense at all yet. Rich is the closest thing I have, and I do think he'll be getting the start until things change.
Update coming this afternoon.

USCU Spartans (68) vs. Eastern Tennessee State University (74 overall rating)
Spartans drop first conference game!
In the first conference game of the year, the Spartans lost at rival East Tennessee State Buc's Memorial Center 63-90. The Spartans stuck with the Bucs through the first half, riding the good shooting of Junior Zac Rich and headed into the locker room down 32-36. The Bucs, picked to finish first in the preseason conference polls, were simply too hot to handle in the second half. Early in the second half, the Bucs made a 16-2 run that was capped by a questionable charge call. Coach Nate Bell of the Spartans argued the call and was given a technical foul and ejected from the game. The Bucs continued the run and scored a whopping 54 points in the second half.
Zac Rich finished with 19 points for the Spartans and backup PG Chavis and Luke Payne also added 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Spartans were outrebounded 36-24. The player of the game was Dequan Twilley, who paced the Bucs with 19 points included 5 3-pointers.
"ETSU is who we thought they were. ETSU was picked to win the conference for a reason and they showed the rest of the conference what that reason was tonight. They responded to our challenge with lights out shooting, good rebounding, and good fundamentals. I didn't like some of the calls we were getting, but let's take nothing away from what ETSU did tonight.
I thought the calls were getting out of hand and more importantly, that our guys needed a boost and I hoped the technical would light a fire under them. I didn't expect to get thrown out, and it looks like they didn't respond well to that, and that's my fault."
The Spartans next face Gardner Webb (1-0) in the first home game of the season. Center Nick Schneiders remained on the injury list for the game but looks to start against Gardner Webb.
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Gardner Webb Bulldogs (70 overall rating)
Home crowd gets pleasant surprise!
Coach Nate Bell and the Spartans treated the sold out, rowdy home crowd of 1,950, to the first conference win of the season. Gardner Webb pushed out to an early lead, but the Spartans bounced back behind the solid play of Luke Payne and Nick Schneiders.
Payne, who had been benched for poor performance, lit up the Bulldogs for 13 points, all in the second half. 7'2" Center Nick Schneiders returned to the starting lineup for the first time in 3 games to score another double-double, 12 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Houser also added 10 points and 4 rebounds in limited minutes, and Uzochukwu also tallied 12 points in the 64-49 win.
The Spartans dominated Gardner Webb inside, largely because the Bulldogs biggest player was 6'6" Matt French. The Spartans also shot a startling 7-12 from 3-point range.
"It's great to get our first conference win, and especially in front of this wonderful sold-out crowd. Luke Payne finally stepped up and got us back in the game and I can't say enough about how important it was to have Nick [Schneiders] back in the lineup for us. He continues to dominate when we can keep him in the game. A great win, and we hope to build on it next week."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Campbell Fightin' Camels (71 overall rating)
PG - Jeremy Byrd
SG - Luke Payne
SF - Mezie Uzochukwu
PF - Bobby Davis
C - Nick Schneiders
Spartans extend winning streak to two games!
The Spartans eased by Campbell and conference player of the year Jonathan Rodriguez 62-52 in front of another sold-out home crowd. The Spartans held Rodriguez (77 Overall Rating) to 12 points and pulled out the victory despite trailing by 1 point at halftime.
Bobby Davis had a season high 17 points and 7 rebounds in the win, and Nick Schneiders continued his success with 8 points and 12 rebounds. Starting SF Uzochukwu had 16 points and Senior Luke Payne added 11 points. Starting PG Jeremy Byrd continued to add another complete, but unflashy, game with 6 points, 5 assists, 4 steals and only 2 turnovers.
"Campbell is a wonderful team and they'll do very well this year in the league. We did a great job tonight shutting down their star player, and that credit goes to Uzochukwu. His speed and size really gave Rodriguez fits tonight and his hard work on defense payed big dividends for us. He's really amazing for a true freshman, and might be the best overall player on the team."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Lipscomb (69 overall rating)
Spartans win first conference road game!
The Spartans blew out Lipscomb 76-52 in the first away win of the year in the conference for Coach Nate Bell. The Spartans used a hot 52% shooting, the highest of the year, and good defense to frustrate Lipscomb (0-2).
Nick Schneiders continues to put up all-conference numbers with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks. Uzochukwu is quickly becoming the star offensive player for the Spartans with 17 points, and senior Luke Payne continues to shoot well and scored 14 points.
"Lipscomb came out flat and we were on fire tonight, for the first time in a long time. Every game so far has been a battle to the end, so it's nice to be able to play a few of our bench players a bit more and rest our starters some."
In the Spartans 7 wins this year the rebounding margin is +7 and in the 9 losses the rebounding margin is -5. The USCU Spartans (7-9) (3-1) are currently tied for third place in the early conference standings and look to continue a 3 game winning streak at the end of the week against the first place Belmont Bruins.

December 5th, 2007, 07:14 AM
Yeah, he does seem to do better off the bench, but just as I was about to give up on him as a starter he got hot and Rich got cold at the same time in the last 3 games. So now I have Payne starting over Rich again. I think I'll just split time with both of them and ride whichever is shooting hot on any particular night. It's the only real position up for grabs at this point, as Uzochukwu has firmly cemented himself as a starter at the SF position, and Bobby Davis is performing decently at the PF position.
Here is a recruiting update and the next few conference games will be posted this afternoon.
List of Senior recruits in order:
1) Hite C 3* - USCU is making good progress, is #1 for Hite, and the only school offering. 5 others are interested.
2)Shelton SG 3* -USCU and Radford are both interested, and USCU is currently #2 and has offered. Radford has not offered yet.
4) Hoskins C 3* - Jumped into the picture when Gardner Webb offered him.
3) Turiaf SF 3* - USCU is still #2 behind UNCG. No offers yet.
4)Esparza SG 3* - Has been offered, 2 other schools are far ahead of USCU but none have offered.

USCU Spartans (68) vs. Belmont Bruins (73 overall rating)
Spartans lose heartbreaker on the road!
The Spartans were up 10 points at halftime and built a 16 point lead early in the second half to see it slowly fade by the end. Both teams shot well all game long, but the Bruins ignited from 3-point range to slowly climb back into the game. With 1:30 remaining, the Spartans were leading 61-57. The Bruins capitalized on their hot shooting and brought the game to 63-61 Spartans with the final 28 seconds remaining. The Bruins waited for the last shot, and with 3.8 seconds remaining Ronell Wooten sunk a heartwrenching with Luke Payne in his face to win the game 64-63.
The player of the game was obviously SG Thomas Goad who dropped 14 points on the Spartans, including the game winner.
Mekie Uzochukwu scored 17 points for the Spartans, and Bobby Davis added 14 points and 7 rebounds. Center Nick Schneiders tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds for his third double double this season despite being injured for 4 games.
"We really let the cat out of the bag tonight. We had Belmont against the ropes and just couldn't finish them off. Goad was on fire all night long no matter who we put on him. I even thought about putting Schneiders on him, but you know he has that bum knee.
Seriously though, this was a heartbreaker. Belmont is a great team and they'll do well all year long, and it's good to know that we can play with them on the road."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Univeristy of North Florida (69 overall rating)
USCU drops second straight on the road!
In a very close game that saw many lead changes, the UNF came out on top in the end, 50-43. Both teams struggled to find their shot all game, and UNF hit a few more 3-pointers. The Spartans shot a woeful 29% as a team including a dismal 22% 3-point percentage. Down by 8 late in the game, the Spartans resorting to chucking up ill-advised 3-pointers, and finished the game with 28 total 3 point attempts.
The player of the game was obviously James Grimball who had 8 points and 22 rebounds in the effort for the UNF.
For the Spartans, Luke Payne had 17 points on 32% shooting and Nick Schneiders had a solid 8 points and 10 rebounds.
"We couldn't hit the broad side of a barn tonight inside or outside. I don't know if it was the crowd or if we were tired, but we've got to shoot more consistently. Last game we shot over 50% against Belmont, and now this. We have to stop playing to the level of our opponents and play our game, our way."
Coach Bell and the Spartans have the long ride back to Spartanburg where a 3 game home stretch is waiting. USCU is currently 7-11 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Jacksonville Dolphins (71 overall rating)
Spartans continue home winning streak with win over Jacksonville!
Riding a two game home winning streak, the Spartans continued their strong play at home. The Spartans got off to a fast start by taking a 9-1 lead and the Dolphins never recovered. The Spartans managed to dominate the much smaller Jacksonville team inside and outrebounded them 25-17. The final score was 56-48 USCU.
The player of the game was C Nick Schneiders who had a career high 20 points and 7 rebounds. Schneiders is putting on an all conference caliber performance, averaging 9.4 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game despite missing 4 games due to injury.
Mekie Uzochukwu also added 10 points for the Spartans.
"We worked hard in practice this week and it really payed off. We play much better basketball tonight and dictated the tempo and dominated inside. That's our trademark and when we do those things, we win."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Kennesaw St. Owls (70 overall rating)
Spartans lose first home game!
The Kennesaw State Owls snap a 3 game home winning streak for the Spartans, winning 73-68. In a back and forth game, the Spartans looked to contain the athletic owls with full court pressure and a zone defense, but Kennesaw St. used that to their advantage.
The player of the game was obviously SG Ronell Wooten (73 overall) who dropped 26 points on the Spartans, including several clutch threes.
Senior SG Luke Payne had 19 points and true freshman Mekie Uzochukwu poured in 16 points to become the teams leading scorer for the season.
"Kennesaw State played a great game and their 4 guard lineup really tested us tonight. We weren't able to box out and get a rebounding advantage and their speed really gave us fits."
The Spartans fall to 8-12 overall and 4-4 in conference play and are tied with 5 other teams for 4th place. The Spartans next face Mercer and James Florence (freshman of the year runner-up last year) in the final home game in this stretch.

Here are the next 5 games!
************************************************** ***********************USCU Spartans (68) vs. Mercer Bears (70 overall rating)
Spartans gets trounced at home!
For their third and final home game in this stretch, the Spartans got clobbered by the Mercer Bears, 68-38. In the worst performance of the year, nothing seemed to go right for the home team, and everything seemed to go right for the Bears. Preseason All-conference SG James Florence (73 overall) lit up the Spartans for 24 points, making two games in row the Spartans allowed a single opponent more than 23 points. The bears shot a startling 51% from the floor while holding the Spartans to only 29%. Desperate to come back, the Spartans relied on the 3-pointer for most of the game, and made only 10 2-point baskets. The rebounding margin was also 34-12 in favor of the Bears, who forced 13 turnovers also.
The player of the game was James Florence for his excellent shooting and 24 points.
For the Spartans, no player was in double figures.
Coach Bell declined a post-game interview and simply said "A nightmare." before heading directly to the locker room with his players and staff.
Coach Bell and the Spartans next travel to Stetson, who is 2-7 and in last place in conference, and then to Florida Gulf Coast, who is 4-5 and tied with the Spartans for 5th place.
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Stetson Hatters (67 overall rating)
USCU bounces back!
After a truly dismal performance against the Mercer Bears last week, the USCU Spartans bounce back against the Stetson Hatters. The Spartans took care of business by getting out to an early lead and never letting Stetson threaten, taking a 30-18 lead into halftime. The final score was 68-47, the largest margin of victory of the year.
For the Spartans, Mekie Uzochukwu regained his prior form, scoring 18 points. Nick Schneiders also contributed 16 points and 8 boards and Senior SG Luke Payne added 11 points. The Spartans as a team shot 7-15 from 3-point range, the highest mark of the year.
The player of the game was Mekie Uzochukwu, who not only displayed his range and shooting ability, but also locked down the star player for the Hatters.
"This was a good win on the road. We knew we had some mismatches against Stetson and we exploited those. Our team shot well tonight, especially Uzochukwu, who is really getting into a groove from both inside and outside the arc. The players have taken to calling him "Anywhere".
No, I'm not going to talk about last game."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (72 overall rating)
Eagles too much for Spartans!
In the roller coaster ride that is the Spartans season, the Eagles overcame the Spartans in Alico Arena, 67-57. In a close game that kept swinging back and forth, the Eagles used good defense and rebounding in the second half to distance themselves and seal the game away. The Spartans made a late comeback run, but had to resort to fouling at the end of the game, and the Eagles capitalized on their good free throw shooting.
In the game rife with emotions and physical play, a brief struggle over a loose ball turned into an incident that resulted in a technical foul against Junior Bobby Davis. The officals called a meeting to get the game under control later in the game as tempers flared and emotions ran high. The Eagles and Spartans may have started a nice little rivalry with this hard fought game.
For the Spartans, Zac Rich scored 18 points and Mekie Mr. Anywhere Uzochukwu scored 12 points.
The player of the game was Junior SG Deloin Franklin for the Eagles, who scored 25 points on excellent outside shooting.
"We played well today, but not consistently. We play hard for stretches and then seem to take a break. This was a game of runs, and unfortunately, we just didn't have enough of them to come back at the end. We'll head home with some lessons learned from this."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Lipscomb(70 overall rating)
Lipscomb almost exacts revenge!
After walloping the Bisons in their own arena, Lipscomb sought revenge against the Spartans at home. The game went down to the wire and the teams were tied at 59 seconds remaining. The Spartans scored quickly and rushed back for defense, but Lipscomb also scored on a nice pick and roll play to tie it at 54-54 with 29 seconds remaining. The Spartans held onto the ball for the last shot, setting up Junior sharpshooter Zac Rich on a screen for a buzzer beater three. Rich nailed the jumper for three points with no time remaining and with two Bison defenders in his face. The final score was 57-54 Spartans, who outrebounded the Bisons 31-21.
For the Spartans, Nick Schneiders got his fourth double-double of the year, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds and swatting 3 blocked shots.
The player of the game was Zac Rich, who had 17 points and 5 3-pointers, including the game winning buzzer beater.
"Woah boy, what a win. The Bisons came out fighting and we struggled to keep pace with them this time around. What can you say about Zac [Rich], he has ice in his veins. He's definitely earned the starting position with this game. I'm so pleased with the development of our team as a whole, but especially Nick Schneiders. He's playing like a real man possessed out there, and it's really only his first year with any playing time. If he can stay consistent, we'll be a force the rest of the year."
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Belmot Bruins(73 overall rating)
Spartans edge Bruins 53-52!
If the last Spartans game wasn't exciting and close enough, this one versus the Belmont Bruins sure was. The Bruins found themselves down 51-45 with 49 seconds remaining. The Bruins went down and hit an inside fadeaway to make it 51-47 with 22 seconds remaining and fouled. Senior Luke Payne became the hero of the game by hit both free throws, making it 53-49. The Bruins scored a quick three pointer to make it 53-52, but couldn't foul Jeremy Byrd in time with 3 seconds remaining on the clock.
Senior SG Luke Payne stepped up to the challenge by scoring 18 points off the bench. Nick Schneiders scored 8 points with 13 rebounds, and Zac Rich and Mekie Uzochukwu also both had 9 points for the game.
The player of the game was Senior Luke Payne, for his clutch shooting down the stretch.
"It's always good to win at home. The fans here have been excellent, and we're proud of our sixth man here in Spartanburg. Our players had a great game against a tough, tough opponent, and our hard work is really starting to pay off."
The Spartans are now 11-14 overall and 7-6 in conference play, good for a tie for third place currently.

wait until you start getting some good recruits and then you will be dominate in your conference play which is were I am getting at right now with my team/ I too had a lot of close wins and losses my first two years so I know what type of season you will have. All I will say is enjoy the ride and no matter what happens just remmeber it only gets better as the years go on.

I'm not so sure. With the difficulty I'm playing at and the smalltime school, I'm having a hard time so far IMO. It's perfect. I'm losing games to teams that are better than I am, with a few exceptions, and beating teams I should beat including a few upsets. Recruiting so far seems pretty tough, as it should be, for a team who has a gym that seats only 1,500 people.
I hope I can really build up South Carolina Upstate, but man is this a tough legacy so far.

Recruiting Update:
List of Senior recruits in order:
1) Hite C 3* - USCU has fallen to #2 for Hite's services, with Florida interested in the big man now. Hite has taken a visit to Florida, but has no scholarship offer yet.
Hite is 6'10" and would bring some more athleticism to the frontcourt. Has good inside moves and good defensive awareness.
2)Shelton SG 3* -USCU has moved up to #1 ahead of Radford, but Radford has now also offered a scholarship. Looks to be a very close race between the two schools.
Shelton is a tall, athletic SG who could easily play the SF position also. He has great speed and quickness for a 6'6" guy. His outside shot is questionable...he is a streaky good shooter.
3) Hoskins C 3* - Gardner Webb has offered as well as USCU, with Gardner Webb currently out to a large lead.
Hoskins is a mature big man who knows how to score and rebound. Good size and vertical should allow him to dominate in the Atlantic Sun conference for whoever lands him.
4) Turiaf SF 3* - USCU is still #2 behind UNCG. No offers yet.
Athletic wing man who has great leaping ability. Needs work on fundamentals and shooting.
5) Dressel SF 3* - Athletic wingman who has no offers and few interested teams. USCU looking to swoop in and steal him at the end.
Dressel is a high 3* candidate who will be a good Division I player at the SF position. Best at slicing into the lane and beating his man off the dribble.
6)Esparza SG 3* - Esparza apparently was not interested enough in USCU, who rescinded their scholarship offer.
************************************************** ************************
So, I have three offers out and I'm saving the fourth to put between Turiaf, Dressel. I have a few 2* prospects for each position in case these don't work out, but since I haven't been spending much time on those, I'm not leading for any of them.
This is a high-risk high-reward recruitment strategy, and could really burn us if I fail to land any of these 3* guys. Florida's late interest in Hite has really messed me up...I was counting on landing him and don't have any good bigman fallbacks really. The only one I'm even remotely confident I can land is Shelton at this point.

Atlantic Sun Conference Standings
East Tennessee State 9-4
Campbell 8-5
Kennesaw State 8-5
South Carolina Upstate 7-6
Stetson 7-6
Florida Gulf Coast 7-6

Gardner Webb 6-7

Look at that parity in the conference. It's still really anyone's ballgame with 3 games to go! If we can knock off our next three games: Campbell, Gardner Webb, and East Tennessee State, then we have a chance at the regular season title. Those next three games feature the top two teams and two of the preseason all-conference team members.
I'll post the results in a few hours.

I don't know how many scholarships Florida has to offer, but Hite could be their fallback plan. If they use their scholarships up on higher rated players you might still be able to get him. If you lose Hoskins to Campbell, then maybe you can swoop up both Turiaf and Dressell (who looks to be the better prospect at a distance).
Hope you can sign a couple of them at least

USCU Spartans (68) vs. Campbell Fightin' Camels (71 overall rating)
Spartans lose despite Rich's 27 points!
The USCU Spartans hoped to hold Campbell's Rodriguez and beat them twice in a row, but they could only manage the first goal. Campbell took an early lead and led 31-24 at the half. Rodriguez was again limited to only 12 points for the Camels, but SR SG Pringle lead the way with 21 points, and sealed the game late with crucial free throws to put the Camels on top 62-60.
JR SG Zac Rich scored a career high against Campbell, slashing them for 27 points including 7 3-pointers. Nick Schneiders also had a huge game, with his fifth double double and scored 17 points with 16 rebounds.
The player of the game was Campbell's Pringle.
"Campbell's second place in the conference for a reason. They played a great game out there tonight. both teams did really. We just have to keep battling and playing hard and good things will happen. Rich obviously played an outstanding game for us, he almost single-handedly willed us to victory tonight and is obviously dangerous from the arc when he gets on fire. We tried to contain Rodriguez and play him tight and that might have left his teammates open tonight more. We'll face two tough opponents to close out the season in Gardner Webb and of course ETSU."
The Spartans fall to 11-16 overall and 7-7 in conference play and are tied with 3 other teams for 5th place.
USCU Spartans (68) vs. Gardner Webb Bulldogs (71 overall rating)
Spartans clobber Bulldogs!
Gardner Webb was held to a season low 39 points in the worst home loss in 10 years. The Spartans involved everyone in the game and 5 players scored in double figures after relying on stars Rich and Schneiders earlier in the week. Gardner Webb was outrebounded, outshot, and gave up 14 turnovers in the loss. The final score was 64-39.
Sophomore Nick Schneiders tallied 14 points and 5 rebounds, Uzochukwu had 12 points and 6 rebounds, JUCO PF Bobby Davis finally returned to the highlight stats with 10 points and 5 rebounds, PF Houser and SG Payne also had 10 points each.
The player of the game was Nick Schneiders who also tallied 4 blocks and shut down the Bulldogs interior game with his defense.
"We really needed this victory tonight, especially since it was a road game. The Bulldogs just looked tired tonight and we seem to be coming together at just the right time."
The Spartans are now 8-7 in conference play, guarenteeing at least a .500 finish in conference play. The next game is against rival #1 in-conference East Tennessee State (10-5) at home.
USCU Spartans (68) vs. East Tennessee State (71 overall rating)
Spartans knock off East Tennessee State!
In the final regular season game of the season, the Spartans knock off the East Tennesee State Bucs 62-60. One week after losing a tight game to Campbell that came down to free throws at the end, the Spartans faced a similar situation against ETSU, except they were protecting the lead and ETSU was fouling to try to steal the victory. The Bucs, in the first conference game of the season against the Spartans, put up 90 points on the Spartans, but this game was one of methodical offense and good defense. The Spartans dictated tempo much of the game, and held star Bucs player and All-conference Preseason Player of the Year Courtney Pigram to only 11 points. PG Travis Strong had 19 points for the Bucs in the loss.
Star SG Zac Rich was the player of the game and scored 19 points for the Spartans, continuing his hot shooting from behind the arc. Nick Schneiders dominated the game inside, scoring 11 points and 13 rebounds.
"To beat the #1 team in the conference at the end of the season really makes me proud of this squad. We hope that we can build on this momentum going into the conference tournament and make some noise."
************************************************** ************************
The Spartans finish the regular season 13-16 overall and 9-7 in conference play, good for 4th in the conference.
The Spartans will next face the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in the first round of the Atlantic Sun conference tournament. The Eagles beat the Spartans in a tight, tense, emotional game in their only game of the season.

USCU Spartans (68) vs. Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (72 overall rating)
Spartans crumble in first round game!
The USCU Spartans lost to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in the first round of the Atlantic Sun conference tournament, 65-60. The Eagles swept the Spartans this year, beating them in the only regular season matchup 67-57. The Eagles managed to once again outrebound the Spartans despite good interior play by Nick Schneiders for USCU. The Eagles shot an amazing 62% from the floor while holding the Spartans to only 40% shooting.
Although the Spartans limited the playmaker Quantaince to only 5 points, JR SG Deloin Franklin tallied 18 points for the Eagles and won player of the game honors. Franklin scored 25 against the Spartans in the first matchup, and again proved difficult to guard in this contest.
For the Spartans, Nick Schneiders had a solid game and his 7th double-double of the year, scoring 16 points and 14 rebounds. Zac Rich and Mekie Uzochukwu added 9 points each.
"This was a very disappointing loss, especially after the way we finished the regular season, but Florida Gulf Coast is a good team that just had our number all year. We could not stop their penetration into the lane, and their outside shooting didn't cool off all game long."

Why didn't Schneiders and Davis shoot more. If they are averaging over 50 percent a game you think they should average at least double figures.
Looks as if next year you find some recruits to play defense or get your team to play better defense you should have a lot better year. At least you know offense is in place and that isn't something you need to work on.

Why didn't Schneiders and Davis shoot more? Big men always have a higher shooting precentage than wings or guards...neither Davis nor Schneiders took any three pointers for the year. If you add in 3 pointers, the good shooters are just as efficient as the two big men. Even at that, I could probably stand to go inside more often and use outside shooting and threes less, since my team is fairly poor shooting.
Also, I'm not sure what to make of the ratings 2K8 gives you on offensive and defensive efficiency.
I get an A- and best in the conference for offense, while averaging only 59 PPG, last in the conference. I get an F in defense while only allowing like 62 PPG, best in the conference.
Those don't really add up. Could it have something to do with my playing time being 13 minutes and sim time at 20 minutes that completely messes up the offensive and defensive efficiencies?
In my opinion we are definitely stronger on offense than defense, but it isn't that huge of a disparity.
Overall, I think this season was a big success, despite the early exit from the tournament. We were preseason picked in last place (and compared to what the real team is doing), this team totally overexceeded expectations.
I really like the difficulty level I'm playing at and the sliders I'm using...most of the games feel very realistic and I'm beating only people I should and vice versa, with a few exceptions. The A-Sun conference is very even in terms of talents, with only a few standout players. My team didn't really have anyone that was consistent enough to be a "star"....different people were on at different parts of the season. A few times I thought I'd see an emerging talent, but then they wouldn't produce the next few games or something.
My favorite players are definitely Schneiders and Rich, who would be my MVPs, Schneiders for defense and Rich for his offense.
I'll post the rest of the seasons stuff tomorrow afternoon.
CincyFan
December 11th, 2007, 04:03 PM
well I know all of that, but I was just wondering to up your average more a game to pound it inside. I found a lot of success doing that. Plus after a while you start to get wide open men on the outside from double teams so they should give your outside shooters some better percentages.
slackerb
December 12th, 2007, 06:54 AM
Yeah, that's definitely good advice...I was hoping to have a more 3-point oriented team, but I just don't have the personnel right now to do that, as my 30% 3-point average shows.
I'll definitely look to pound it inside more to Schneiders and my PF next season.
One big problem I have is playing against the 2-3 zone. The teams in the A-Sun play a lot of zone, and it's tough to just pound away inside against it. Conventional coaching wisdom says to shoot out of the zone, but with this team...that's tough.
Hopefully the rest of the coaches in the league don't catch on and all go zone, LOL.
Maybe I can get some shooters in the offseason?

I've been wondering about the efficency ratings too. At UCR, I'm #1 in nation on offense and #330 on defense (not sure if that's last, but its darn close). I don't block many shots or get many steals, so that may factor into it. Plus the other team's shooting %.
When you score a lot of points and run a fast paced game, the other team is likely to score a lot too (Last couple years Tennessee led the SEC in pts scored and was near last in pts given up). It's going to be that way unless you blow teams out -- and don't know about you, but my team is just not at the caliber to be blowing many teams out right now (more likely to get blown out as has happened a few times).

December 13th, 2007, 11:15 AM
Yeah, I definitely thing the efficiencies are totally meaningless now...especially if you change the half time like I do (I play at 13 minutes).
Unless they compute steals per minute or points per minute or something, then it's totally going to be out of whack if I play 13 minutes/half every game and then every simmed game is 20 minutes/half.
Vols21, my team efficiencies were similar to yours. I'm wagering that almost every user-played team is like that.

South Carolina Upstate Signed Recruits:
*** Stuart Shelton
SG 6'6" 210 pounds; Bakersfield, CA
#201 Overall #49 Position (68 Overall; B- Potential)
Averaged 14.5 PPG and 2.8 RPG in ABL including 20/43 for 3-point, a 45.6% mark
Shelton has very good speed and quickness for a 6'6" guy. He's a very long and athletic guard, capable of forcing huge mismatches on some of the smaller guards in the A-Sun. Although he shot very well on the ABL team, Shelton needs to improve on his outside shooting to fit into Coach Bell's offense. He's a fast guy who can slash to the basket and should have the size and speed to play at the SF position for the Spartans.
*** Jason Hite
C 6'10" 260 pounds; St. Petersburg, FL
#430 Overall; 346 Position (68 Overall; B Potential)
Averaged 14.5 PPG and 11.9 RPG in ABL
Hite is a center with good overall skills, but doesn't excel in any particular area. He has good size and a decent vertical, but not the same athleticism and agility of the top flight Centers. He has good hands and quick moves on the inside. Needs to work on his shooting and shot blocking. A good finisher around the basket, Hite also is an excellent defender on the inside.
*** Marco Dressel
SF 6'6" 194 pounds; Houston, TX
#340 Overall; #55 Position (69 Overall; B Potential)
Averaged 14.0 PPg and 13.9 PPG in ABL
Dressel is a silky smooth Forward who cut up the opposition in the ABL and found a variety of ways to score. His speed and leaping ability make him dangerous in the running game, and he has a good enough jump shot to pose a threat in the halfcourt offense. Dressel is a good overall player, but could use work on the defensive side of the ball. He's a terrific rebounder for a small forward, and he just finds ways to score bunches of points.
Summary:
Coach Pete Bell has pulled off a huge coup in his first season of recruiting. Coach Bell's risky strategy of aiming for top talent netted 3 *** recruits, good for a second place ranking in the conference. Rather than focusing only on local or state talent like many of the A-Sun teams, Coach Bell instead widened the search nationwide and drew on the athlete-rich states of Texas, California, and Florida to net his prize recruits.
The trio of freshman are 3 of the top 5 rated freshmen headed into the Atlantic Sun Conference.
However, Coach Bell didn't always look in the driver's seat. Entering the final weeks of the regular season, Jason Hite started getting attention and visiting with national power Florida. Radford and USCU were both in a neck and neck race for Shelton. A pure shooter in Esparza spurned the Spartans and decided to go elsewhere after having been in touch with Bell all year long. Dressel hadn't even heard of South Carolina Upstate until the last three weeks in the season. Hoskins, the best rated player to go to the A-Sun, chose nearby Gardner Webb over USCU.
In the end, Coach Bell has to be smiling. He has three athletic and fast players that should upgrade his team speed and talent level. Look for all three to make a splash early and often in the 2008-2009 season.

Yeah, I'm really excited about these three guys. I was very surprised at the end of recruiting...I'll tell you that...I totally thought I was going to get screwed out of Hite by Florida, then Radford would yank Shelton out from under me.
Shelton signed the first week and Hite signed the third. Dressel was a very late addition and although he had other offers, signed with me in the last week. And he may be the best of the bunch.
Now time to fire it up tonight and see how the guys actually play. I only got to actually play with Shelton and Hite a little bit in ABL, but that was soooo long ago and the game was so new, I don't remember much about them except being impressed.

Coach Nate Bells returns in his second season after a 13-16 overall and 9-7 in conference record, finishing 4th in the regular season conference standings. This year the charismatic Bell brings in three prized recruits from all parts of the nation to bolster his already young, but talented roster.
The Spartans return 4 starters from last year's squad in Rich, Uzochukwu, Davis, and Schneiders. The Spartans return 74.6% of the scoring from last season as well as 83.2% of the rebounding.
Despite those impressive statistics, this year's Spartans will have to come together early as a team and learn to fit many new pieces into the lineup. Last season's senior included the team leader and captain in PG Jeremy Byrd and all-time Spartan leading scorer Luke Payne. Payne, in a controversial decision, did not start over half of the games last season for the Spartans. Though the team returns 4 starters and includes three seniors, no player on the team has started more than one season for the Spartans. In fact, all four returning starters were new to the starting lineup. Add in the dynamic recruiting class and the youth of the team overall, and Coach Bell and the Spartans may have their work cut out for them this year.

2009 USCU Roster:
Returnees:
64 SO SF Mekie Uzochukwu 6'5" 205 LBS
"Mr. Anywhere" is a good hustler, athletic wingman that had several breakout games in the 2008 season as a freshman. He started almost every game, and got second place in Conference Freshman of the Year voting. Worked hard in the offseason to improve his range and 3-point shooting.
63 SO PG Josh Chavis 5'8" 150 LBS
Chavis inherits the starting PG slot from Senior Jeremy Byrd. In 2008, Chavis was Byrd's backup and he handled the job well, but did not shine. Chavis can handle the ball well, pass decently, and break presses and run the floor with his speed. A major question is can Chavis be an offensive threat as well, and can he overcome his very small size and guard the bigger point guards in the league. His 3 point shooting rating is 74, but he never got in a rythmn last season.
61 SR SG Zac Rich 6'1" 185 LBS
Rich looks to become the captain of the team. He's the most experienced player on the team, and also led the team in scoring last season. His 77 rating in 3-point shooting will help the team, since it's offense is predicated on finding the open man and making the other team pay. Look for Rich to have a big year if the Spartans are unable to find other threats on the court.
61 SR PF Bobby Davis 6'6" 225 LBS
Davis started almost every game last season in the PF slot, and did so impressively. Though his numbers seem average, Davis almost single-handedly won several games for the Spartans last season. His rebounding and work around the basket insures he'll be a much used player in 2008.
59 JR C Nick Schneiders 7'2" 240 LBS
What looked to be the biggest weakness before last season became one of it's biggest strengths in Schneiders. The awkward big-man has worked on his footwork and positioning, and should be poised to have a big season in the post for the Spartans. Freshman Jason Hite should push Schneiders for playing time, ensuring that the big man plays hard every game. Schneiders almost averaged a double double last season, and finished second in First Team All-Conference voting for the C position.
58 SO PG Rashawn Brailsford 6'2" 170 LBS
Brailsford was the most prized recruit as an incoming freshman last season, but failed to live up to his billing in practices and the few minutes he saw the floor. He should be the backup PG this year, and may push for more playing time if Chavis cannot produce offensively.
58 SR PF Justin Houser 6'9" 215 LBS
Houser was a very important 6th man a year ago, filling in for the C and PF position. With the new talent in town, look for Houser and Davis to fight for the minutes that remain.
58 SO PF Rory Spencer 6'7" 200 LBS
Spencer was the backup PF last season and played only sparingly. If he does not show improvement, he may be redshirted or cut from the roster.
57 RS FR PF Greg Maugle 6'7" 205 LBS
Newcomers:
(SEE RECRUITING RECAP FOR DESCRIPTIONS)
69 FR SF Marco Dressel 6'6" 194 LBS
68 FR SG Stuart Shelton 6'6" 210 LBS
68 FR C Jason Hite 6'10" 260 LBS

see you like to keep everything (coaching attributes) even. Well at least I don't feel that bad not having a winning season for two years now. I doubt you will have another losing season but at least I am not alone my first year.

Wow Hite,Shelton,Dressel are all below 70? Well they had good potential though so if you stay, they will great in a couple of years. Looking forward to see if any or all 3 make your starting lineup? I know Cincy likes to go young and leave his valued upclassmen on the bench :)

^^ This team still has a lot of question marks..I'm just hoping to hit .500. I play a tough difficulty setting and sliders, so nothing will be easy and I should only win the games I have a chance in. Makes it tough and fun!
^Yeah, I was actually surprised that they were rated that low for their rankings at position and in the class. For example, Hoskins, the other big guy that I wanted besides Hite (who Gardner Webb took from me) rated a 74! Now that's a good 3 star!
I base much of my starting lineup on current performance...so I'll base it on the midnight madness and then adjust as the season goes on.

you gotta tall team, what only 3 players 6'2" & under everyone else 6'5" and up, hopefully that'll work in advantage for you

Created a username just to tell you to keep it up. Found this through OS and started reading because I'm using USCU also. Finished 15-15 year one and I secured 4 3 stars, although 2 were juco freshman and one was a juco sophomore. Year 2 is better, trust me, I'm 6-2 right now. Only Chavis, Mezie, and Schneider start for me year two. I do have a question for you, are you using the schedule the computer gives you or are you editing.

most the 3* guys I see end up being in the 60's although mine were all over the board. I had a 2* rated better than a couple of the 3*'s

Yeah, they really are all over the place...guess I should be proud of my high 60's 3 stars. Just hurts a little that I let Hoskins, a 74 OVR 3 star go...
^^ Excellent, be good to compare to another person doing USCU...thanks for reading...you'll have to keep me posted on your career also. Does Zac Rich not do well for you? He's easily my best scorer last year. I edit the schedule...the first year I think I only changed one game, but this year I tailored it to what I think helps my team out. I know we won't get an at-large bid to the NCAA, so I didn't make the nonconference too hard.
One strange thing....my 3 recruits now say they have a potential of C rather than B- or B....is that because of my teaching skill?

Spartans Midnight Madness:
This year's Spartans Midnight Madness displays the Green versus the White, with the older, experienced players on the Green team and the newcomers and bench on the White. The game began slowly, with mostly poor offense being displayed and a few spots of good defense.
The big showdown, and one the crowd really got into, was between last year's star big man Nick Schneiders and true freshman Jason Hite. Neither team shot particularly well, especially from outside. The Green team shot a paltry 35% and the White team shot 41% from the floor. Both squads hovered around the 20% mark for three-points. The rebounding advantage was 37-34 and the final score was White 56, Green 52.
Box Score:
Green Team:
PG - Chavis 10 points; 5 assists; 24 minutes
SG - Rich 16 points; 6/14 shooting; 1/6 from 3-point; 21 minutes
SF - Uzochukwu 10 points; 3/17 shooting; 1/6 from 3-point; 20 minutes
PF - Davis 2 points; 8 rebounds; 21 minutes
C - Schneiders 8 points; 12 rebounds; 3 blocks; 20 minutes
White Team:
PG - Brailsford 2 points; 5 assists; 26 minutes
SG - Shelton 11 points; 5/17 shooting; 1/5 from 3-point; 25 minutes
SF - Dressel 19 points; 9 rebounds; 6/17 shooting; 3/12 from 3-point; 24 minutes
PF - Spencer 9 points; 2 rebounds; 23 minutes
C - 13 points; 19 rebounds; 23 minutes
Notes:
- Shelton only hit one shot from outside the paint...most of his points were from fast breaks or posting up inside on his Rich.
- Hite hit 6/9 shots to be the most effective scorer.
- White team pushed the ball most of the game and scored often on fast breaks against the slower Green team. White team only hit 5 shots outside the paint all game.
Coach Nate Bell was not surprised that his younger team pulled out the victory over the assistant coaches' more experienced team.
"The young squad definitely has some talent, especially our three freshmen. It's obvious they'll see lots of playing time this year...they demand it with their production on the court. I saw some good things out there, but we sure have a lot to work on before we are a good basketball team.
I'm concerned about the White team's lack of good shooting...since they only hit those 5 shots from any distance. Shelton obviously struggled with his shot, but managed to create some points. Dressel didn't shoot that well either, but he got into the lane and got fouled a few times to help out his team. Hite had a monster game for us, and it'll obviously be hard to keep him off the court. Schneiders did well, but he almost always does...so he'll keep his starting job. The rest of the team didn't show me much. Hopefully we can improve in practice and come together as a well-oiled team in a few weeks."

Rich did well for me off the bench last year but this year I have lost the touch with him. I just can't hit a thing with him. Mezie (I can't pronounce his last name so that's what I call him) is another story. For some reason I can hit the open three with him very consistantly. My leading scorer so far this year is Kounjia, my true freshman sg, that came in at a 68. He's just lightning quick.

It's cause of your recruiting skills. i wondered how come you didnt have edit that and charsima first but its cause you didn't know how important it was. the higher it is the more accurate the things you find out about your recruit.

Looks like you got some great talent in the big men Hite and Schneiders, could we see them possibly play side by side giving you a dominant twin towers??

^^I knew Scouting was important but I didn't want to stack up on just Charisma and Scouting all the way because it's kinda cheap and the easy way out. I'm trying to make this legacy as realistic as possible.
Deuce, I played the first few non-conference games this weekend...and yes, Hite and Schneiders are both in the starting lineup now. :-)
Results posted this afternoon.

I always like to go with Charisma high first and keep scouting low. That case I have better chances of signing people but have to wait to next year to see if they are actually as good as it said or better/worst.

i build up my charisma and recruiting first. this is the order...
1. charisma
2. recriuting
3. teaching
4. discipline
5. offense/defense
6. offense/defense

I noticed your post about how your potential ratings on your players dropped. I was wondering the same thing because I notice my players do the same. I am trying to figure it out because I have a A+ in Charisma a B+ in Scouting but only a C in teaching. So part of me thinks it must be the teaching??
Nornally in my legacies I go
Charisma
Offense
Scouting
Defense
Teaching
Discipline
I generally look for assistants that have higher Scouting and Teaching scores to make up for my lack of it. I have never really expierenced the who lack of discipline, personally for me I would like them to add something to basketball like EA has in Football where Discipline means players will skip class, meetings, cheat on tests ect.. And you would have to sit players until they meet the NCAA standards. This to me would make discipline more important.

yeah, I'd be curious is anyone had good defense ratings - and if so what they do.
I can't remember but i belive DefRebounds and how many opp shot att are big factors
