In only his second year 1974, he gained 811 yards and 9 touchdowns as he led the New England Patriots to a surprising 4-0 start before faltering to a 7-7 finish. In 1977 he gained a career high 1,015 yards and scored 4 touchdowns, and also caught 42 receptions for 370 yards and a touchdown. He played his entire career (1973 through 1982) with the Patriots and was a 1978 Pro Bowl selection.

Cunningham finished his career with 5,453 rushing yards, 210 receptions for 1,905 yards, and 49 touchdowns. He is the older brother of former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham.

* The first ever player drafted by the Falcons for the inaugural 1966 season. He quickly became the first ever Falcons player voted to the Pro Bowl in his rookie year. The stellar middle linebacker was named rookie of the year for his efforts.

* “Mr. Falcon” led the team in tackles in nine of his 11 seasons, while earning five trips to the Pro Bowl.

* After his 46th consecutive NFL game, he underwent knee surgery in 1969 and anointer one on the other knee in 1971. He came back to earn another Pro Bowl spot in 1972.

* One of football’s fiercest competitors ever, his middle linebacker toughness is legendary.

* In a poll conducted in 1970 by ABC to pick the best athlete of the decade of the 1960s, RB O.J. Simpson was No. 1 and he was No. 2 in the entire country.

* He had a 294 tackles as a rookie in 1966, a record that still stands to this day.

* Also intercepted 11 passes during his pro career, returning two of them for touchdowns.

* His jersey, No. 60, was the first one the Falcons ever honored. He was the only one to ever wear the number in the franchise’s history.
