For anyone here who's read my posts over at IGN.com, you know that the most important thing to me when it comes to boxing games is the GAMEPLAY. I want realistic boxing action, no 3-second parries, none of that FNR3 garbage. But I don't want to get into a long wishlist about the gameplay. I have nothing to add to the hundreds of suggestions you've already read. So here's one that's totally insignificant and could be a dud. But how about:
"VIRTUAL SPECTATOR MODE"
For the first time ever in any videogame, you can now watch online boxing matches in a virtual arena from your virtual seat. As a virtual spectator you can choose to get up from your seat to cheer or boo with a simple touch of a button. You will have a variety of cheers and boos at your disposal, each with a different intensity level. From "golf clap" to "fanatic screaming." You can cheer or boo for as long as you want. If you stand up you will obstruct the view of other virtual spectators. Every virtual spectator can vote to kick you out of the arena. If 3 or more virtual spectators vote to kick you out within a 60 second window, you will be kicked out of the arena. Of course, you have the option of leaving the arena voluntarily anytime during the match. This feature is not just a mere gimmick, it actually a complex program that will affect the overall online rating of the contestants. Every button press from each virtual spectator is recorded. The more cheers, the higher the ratings. The more boos, the lower the ratings. Furthermore, the program "knows" who the cheers are for. After a great punch has been landed, the cheers that immediately follow will be credited towards the fighter who landed the punch. If both fighters are trading bombs, both will be credited with the cheers. On the other hand, if the boos registered immediately after a clinch, the fighter who initiated the clinch will get the "boo."
The seating arrangement is decided automatically by the computer on a first come, first serve basis. The earliest virtual spectators will get the ringside seats. The number of seats are determined by the combatants. Before each match, the two combatants could agree to either have a "full virtual arena" mode, which will offer the maximum number of seats for a particular arena. If nobody shows up, the arena be empty. The bigger the arena, the more spectators it will take to fill. The number of virtual spectators for your online matches will also affect your rating. When prospective virtual spectators view your profile, they can see if you're worth watching or if you're boring. The combatants also have the option to have the option of having an AI crowd fill all the empty seats once the match begins. Only the number of virtual spectators will be credited to the players, not the AI crowd.
While this idea might be overly elaborate for what it is, it has the potential to create a virtual boxing community that will keep up with the top ranked online players. You can set up tournaments over the IGN or 2K forums to promote your fights and find out how big a draw you really are. Virtual spectators will be able to see what kind of player you are and you can build a reputation. Also, it's just a fresh and interactive way to watch online matches. You'd feel like part of the action. The programmers can figure out how the chat system will work so that you can talk to the other virtual spectators during the match. Of course, the players will not hear these conversations. They will only hear the canned cheers or boos from the button presses of the spectators. It will be awesome to hear an arena cheering dynamically to the action in the ring, knowing that those are actual people.
