I've played WR for my 3 years playing football because I've always been the absolute fastest on my team, but I don't exactly have the best hands. In middle school, the team always utilized me on fly routes all the time, but I caught only a few since we ran the ball pretty much all of the time. Most of my catches were in the 4th quarter when we were behind, and they all were for 1st downs on crossing patterns.
So, this year, as a high school freshman, I played WR as usual, but I hurt something in my back, so I had to quit after the 2nd game.
I'm thinking of maybe playing again next year, and I either want to play WR or HB next year. I'm really fast, and I can kinda run people over or I can see the holes and just run to daylight. But my problem is that my hands are'nt exactly what you would call soft. So my dilemma is whether I should play WR or HB.

i always hear they put fast guys that don't have the best hands at cornerback or safety... maybe it's time to consider the other side of the ball... you could be the bomb at stoppin' the bomb.

Yeah, I was the best pass defender on my team this year, but I couldn't tackle for ****, so I didn't get to play in the two games before getting hurt.
I don't get it though, last year I was a great tackler, then all of a sudden, this year I can't tackle.

Lol sucks I had the same prob except I can catch pretty well it just seems like I drop a couple more passes than I should. Only thing with me is I make very good acrobatic catches to coupe plus I started at CB and had 6 INTs 1 defensive TD. I didn't even try out for WR, my coach said I had good hands and put me there I had couple catches but we ran the ball the majority of the time. I would say run catching drills to try and get that feel for the ball everytime. Make sure you run some runningback drills also to strengthen your HB skills. One drill I recommend is getting a soft/rubbery nerf ball since u said u don't have what we call soft hands and have someone throw it to you over and over pretty hard so you can get use to cushioning the ball cause you have to have soft hands to catch one when thrown hard. Tennis ball can work just depends on how hard someone throws it to u. Idk about you but I am a way better corner than WR I may be small(I'm skinny) but I can tackle and I was a shutdown corner(not tryin to brag or anything). By the way this season was also my freshman season but this is my first year playin tackle football haha.

ok lsu,
you asked for advice so don't get mad at me for an honest assessment, you have stated you can't catch (bad hands could also lead to fumbles) and you can't tackle... so how is your kicking and/or can you play a tuba or something?

Wish I could help, but I'm more of a hockey guy. Wish I hadn't stopped playing hockey in 6th grade (Most of the kids at school always made fun of me for playing hockey), but I was one of the best at the place I played. NVR and I mean NVR listen to kids if they tell you that you suck. I would say go with HB.

I just wish that I regained my tackling skills, because I was the best pass defender, and corner was actually my favorite position.
But maybe I couldn't tackle because I hurt my lower back/hip.
It was the second week of summer practice, I think, and I just hurt it somehow, and i just kept getting worse and worse as the season progressed. Then finally, the day right before school started, I injured it worse, and I was in soooooo much pain.

they always stuck me in right field in little league, but i got 'em back, i found three 4 leaf clovers in 5 seasons out there and no one cared if i wore my hat sideways or backwards, but they did get mad when they had to always tell me when to come in and when to go out... but those clovers consumed my attention and no one ever hit it out there anyways... so if you need a good right fielder, pm me!

tubo,
he said he can't tackle... do you really want a non tackling cornerback or safety or a receiver that can't catch or a halfback that may fumble? lsu, if you can't kick the ball, try right field in baseball... no one ever hits it out there.
aren't you glad you asked us for advice?

^^^That was me in highschool...I was a 100m, 200m champ in track..but my hands were dicey. I played FS in a 4-4-3..and was asked to basically cover the entire field...and if they had a stud recieverto man him up all over the field
My hands were so bad my 1st couple of years that instead of giving me the usual helmet sticker for making big plays..I would get one that was cut in half for every pick I droped. I had about a dozen of them. :o
You had NO chance of getting behindme though

basically, you guys can't catch so you need a non catching sport. football, basketball and baseball are out; bowling, volleyball and hockey are in.

If they can't hit in football then they're screwed in hockey. :) I mean hitting is the best part of hockey, and when you can get away with checking players it becomes even more fun (The house league's didn't allow you to check). Surprisingly I only had 1 penelty, and that was for tripping.

good point!
i never played any sports except right field in little league... so i have corrected the list below:
basically, you guys can't catch or tackle (hit hard) so you need a non catching non contact sport. football, basketball and baseball are out; bowling, volleyball and badminton are in.

I'm on PS3 (responding to an earlier post). LSU, I'd try out HB. I played fullback last year in a double wing (so it might as well have been HB, I still got the ball as much as the other guys) and I have to say that it is the funnest position to play. I also play wide out and it's fun when you're really good, but your confidence can get pretty low if you drop a couple (well, mine did anyway).

My advice, let your coaches evaluate your talent. They will be able to determine where you will benefit the team the most.

LSU, I think it comes down to what your team is in most need of. Talk with your coaches about this. I'm assuming your football career doesn't progress beyond high school, so it would be in your best interest, and the team's best interest to use you where you would be the biggest asset.
When you decide upon a position, work on the skills of that position you lack or need improvement on. If you go to WR work on your hands, CB work on your tackling, RB work on reading holes and cutting, you get the point.
Good luck.
