View Full Version : Coach Don Bomber Legacy

As freshman PG Derek Glasser hit his third free throw after Marcus Williams fouled him to cut the deficit to 1, the Sun Devil fans, even then, knew they had practically no chance at a victory over rival Arizona. It was Senior Night, the last home game of the regular season, and four starters would be departing. With :01 left, Chase Bundinger was meaninglessly fouled and sent to the line, making the final score 58-61.
Even though Arizona State had 3 more away games to play, the Arizona loss left a sour taste in their mouth. The Devils went on to win one of those games, 42-41 over Cal, but every State fan knew that Coach Herb Sendek would be fired after only his first year with the team, finishing 10th in the Pac-10 with an 8-22 overall record. "It's simply not allowable," said A.D. Lisa Love.
The search was on.
With many coaches to choose from, it sure seemed like an appealing job opportunity. 5 of the 6 top scorers from 06-07 would be returning, most notably junior PF Jeff Pendergraph, Who nearly averaged a double-double with 12.1 PPG and 9.1 RPG.
After weeks of searching and scouring the nation for the perfect man for the job, the Sun Devils found one.
"It is with great pleasure that I introduce the men's basketball coach for the 2007-2008 season. Don Bomber coached at several DII schools, en route to a 112-21 record, and his success has proved enough to our great school of Arizona State for us to offer him a 2 year, $400K contract."
Was Bomber the man? Well, the 43 year old, and the Sun Devils, would have to wait and see.
------------------
Well, here tis everyone. I said I'd make a new legacy, and I meant it. Thanks to no help from you guys, I decided on my own ASU was the place for me. Things (format and such) will be a bit different this time around.

Team Info
Halves: 13 minutes
Sim halves: 20 minutes
Everything else on default
Assistant Coaches
Rod Sood: 30 years old, a good assistant who knows his defense and offense, and knows the fundamentals of basketball enough to teach his players very well. A fairly charistmatic fellow for his age, so he should be a joy for these young men to work with.
B- ovr, B off, B- def, B- tea, C scout, B char, C+ dis
Raitis Andres: More experienced at 44, he's an offensive mastermind that will help me greatly, as I'm more of a defensive guy myself. He has an eye for picking good talent, so we've talked and he's agreed to do a lot of the scouting for ASU.
B- ovr, A+ off, D def, C- tea, A- scout, C+ char, C+ dis
The Starters
PG Antwi Atuahene, Senior
6'3'', 205 lbs
71 ovr, 87 handle, 80 off aware
6.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.9 apg (last year's stats)
Not much of a shooter at all, but is a leader on this team with his experience and his ability to run the point will be vital. He needs to improve on 56% FT shooting from last year, and his position is definately not in stone.
SG James Harden, Freshman
6'4'', 218 lbs
74 ovr, 86 3pt, 80 def
Harden is arguably the most hyped freshman coming into Arizona State, ever. The 5* can shoot, drive, and defend, and will no doubt be one of the most talented players on the Sun Devils for a long time to come.
SG Christian Polk, Sophmore
6'3'', 175 lbs
72 ovr, 82 3pt
12.0 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 32% 3pt
Polk is one of the best shooters on the team, and will likely flourish moreso than last year with the addition of Harden. Polk is very undersized playing at the SF spot, but Coach Bomber believes Polk's ability to create shots off the dribble will make him valuable in the Pac-10.
PF Jeff Pendergraph, Junior
6'9'', 230 lbs
76 ovr, 81 stand dunk, 77 lowD, 94 OReb
12.1 ppg, 9.1 rpg
Pendergraph is no doubt the best player on this team and unquesteionably the leader. He was the only player picked for the All Pac-10 team (albeit the 3rd team), and was a member of last year's team as well. He's a fantastic force inside, especially on the rebounding end. ASU's season likely depends on his performance.
C Eric Boateng, Sophmore
6'10'', 245 lbs
64 ovr, 75 Oreb
The Duke transfer sat out last year, but his size will be a huge addition to this team going up against the giants of the Pac-10. He's the biggest guy on the team, and nobody really knows how good a scorer he can be. He's a quiet fellow, and it will be interesting to see how this silent giant performs.
-
Bench
SG Jerren Shipp, Sophmore
6'3'', 214 lbs
69 ovr, 75 3pt
7.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.5 apg
Shipp is a solid player overall. He was a starter last year, but will need to earn that position back. He can shoot and play defense, and for now is the 6th man but will reportedly get a lot of minutes.
PG Jamelle McMillan, Freshman
6'1'', 165 lbs
68 ovr, 84 handle
McMillan has the ability to overtake Atuahene early on in the season. He's a talented player, the son of former Sonics guard Nate McMillan. He's not much of a shooter, but can create for others.
PF Kraidon Woods, Freshman
6'8'', 192 lbs
65 ovr, 77 Oreb
Woods is the only other big man who will play this year. He could get a lot of minutes, as the Sun Devils desperately lack depth in the big man department.
PG Derek Glasser, Sophmore
6'1'', 180 lbs
65 ovr, 75 3pt, 78 pass
6.3 ppg, 3.2 apg
Glasser is another former starter, but his lack of commitment in the offseason has forced him down the depth chart. Glasser could very well move right back up though, as he is a very skilled individual who will progress a lot I think.
SF Rihards Kusiks, Freshman
6'6'', 205 lbs
64 ovr, 83 3pt
With Woods the only big man on the bench, Kusiks could play PF a lot this year, despite being the 10th man. He's a great shooter, which could be a big threat to big men who can't guard that. He needs to work on his consistency though.
Redshirted: SG Ty Abbott, Freshman
6'3'', 200 lbs
67 ovr
Abbott is a very gifted athlete, no doubt. Coach Bomber felt he wouldn't get enough playing time this year, and wanted him to develop his shot (72 3pt) more in the offseason while working with the team.
Coach's Thoughts: We have some talent in the backcourt, no doubt. Lots of players means lots of competition, and competition is what makes average teams good and good teams great. Our front court is definately lacking. Hopefully Pendergraph can stay healthy and play a lot of minutes for us this year, as we'll need it for sure.

Note: I'm not using the default rosters, I'm using the latest OS rosters with the roster edits that the people on Operation Sports thought were needed.

Nice Choice. I love the Pac-10. Arizona State and Washington State are my favorites. I would've loved for you to take the Cougs, but they are alot older. You have alot of really of really young depth there. All you need now is to land 1 more big guy and with a good year that should be easy to do.

Schedule
#23 Illinois
TBA
Cal Poly
Florida GUlf Coast
@ Nebraska
Delaware St.
Coppin St.
Xavier
Montana St.
Idaho
Saint Francis (PA)
When asked about how easy his schedule was, Coach Bomber responded "Our team is young and inexperienced. We don't need to go up against the elite teams of the nation just yet. We have to get our feet wet first."
Hopefully the seemingly easy schedule will hold up if the Sun Devils want a bid in the NCAA tournament. The only away game is at Nebraska, which is no Duke, and Xavier is a tough home game as well.
In the Hawaiin Invitational to start the team, if Arizona State manages to get past Illinois, they'll have a tough road to the finals. #6 Duke, LSU, Oklahoma State, and #16 Marquette are also part of the tournament.
------------
Pac-10 Preview
(I won't be going too in depth this year, as most of you probably know the best players and such from each team.)
In order of predicted finish.
1. UCLA Bruins
UCLA has reached the final 4 the past two years, but have yet to make the jump. This year they seem primed for a championship run, with PG Darren Collison (92) leading the way. With incoming freshman Kevin Love (86), the Bruins are easily the favorite to win the Pac-10.
2. Washington State Cougars
The Cougs surprised a lot of people last year, and this year everyone will know about their backcourt, which is arguably the best in the conference, if not country. Seniors SF Kyle Weaver (88) and SG Derrick Low (84) are the leaders, and PG sharpshooter Taylor Rochestie (78) finishes out the group.
3. Oregon Ducks
Oregon reached the Elite 8 last year, but with Aaron Brooks leaving, sophmore TaJuan Porter (75) will have to step into the point guard role. Bryce Taylor is the best player on the team, and their depth will help them contend in the Pac-10.
4. Stanford Cardinal
The twin towers, Brook and Robin Lopez (83 and 75) will hold down the middle for the Cardinal this year. With so many huge athletes in the conference, it's a great comfort to have two 7'. Stanford has three great shooters, and some great athletes that could surprise people this year.
5. USC Trojans
USC is probably the youngest team in the nation arguably, with their best 10 players being underclassmen, most notably OJ Mayo (83). Mayo may be talented in all ways, but PF Taj Gibson (79) will be the catalyst for not only the offense, but the defense.
6. Arizona Wildcats
Arizona has the talent to do very well this year, with sophmore SF Chase Budinger a likely lottery pick in maybe even next year's draft (87), and incoming PG Jerryd Bayless (80) a 3pt machine. But how consistent can 'Zona be?
7. California Golden Bears
Cal is a great team stuck in a superb conference. Senior center Devon Hardin (83) is one of the best leaders in the Pac-10, and their best shooter is a PF, sophmore Ryan Anderson (80). But Cal's lack of guards will hurt them in a conference that includes Darren Collison, Josh Shipp, Derrick Low, OJ Mayo, etc.
8. Arizona State Sun Devils
With incoming coach Don Bomber, nobody knows what to expect out of this very young team. They return several starters, including All-Pac 10 PF Jeff Pendergraph (76). Two sharpshooter underclassmen in James Harden (74) and Christian Polk (72) could decide how well this team does, though.
9. Washington Huskies
Like Cal, Washington is stuck in a great conference. They're loaded with young talent, but led by several upperclassmen, in PF Jon Brockman (84), SG Justin Dentmon (77), and SG Ryan Appleby (75). If the newcomers produce, the Huskies could be playing in march. If not, they could not be playing at all.
10. Oregon State Beavers
No doubt the worst team in the conference, Oregon State is another young team that doesn't have a real stud or much depth. They don't have many big men, but SF Marcel Jones (77) is a great player stuck on a bad team.

Quick Midnight Madness Recap
Played 7 minute halves just to get a feel of the team. First half played with red team (starters) and second half played with gold (bench).
Both teams came out doing pretty well, and the crowd was definately pleased with their new freshman, James Harden of red. The starters (red) were doing good, but not good enough playing against the bench, with a 20-16 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the gold team would lock down on defense, and keep the game close throughout. It looked like red was finally pulling away with a 9 point lead with under 2:00 to go, but a three by Rihards Kusiks and a couple baskets later, and the score was 42-38 with :40 to go. Thankfully for the starters, they would hit their free throws late, and go on to win the game, 49-38.
Both teams shot very well, as gold was 5/12 from three, and red was 7/14. Gold had 7 offensive rebounds (13 total), while red had 6 (18 total). Turnovers were the only thing I didn't like, as both teams combined for 11.
Harden finished with 18 points on 5 threes, fellow sharpshooter Christian Polk had 8 points, 4 assists, on 2/7 3pt shooting, and stud Jeff Pendergraph finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds.
For gold, the one that impressed me the most was probably PF Kraidon Woods. He assured me that we didn't need any more big men, finishing with 8 points and 7 rebounds. Kusiks had 11 points on 3/7 3pt shooting, and Jerren Shipp tallied 10 points on 2/4 3pt shooting.

Recruiting
Coach Don Bomber is taking full advantage of his first year at DI, going after several top recruits.
The one that's gotten the most attention of his peers, is 5*, California Mr. BB Jerrod Hinds. Hinds, the #5 SF and #24 overall player, is a fantastic all around player. He averaged 13.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, and shot 46% from three on his Lakers team. He has been offered scholarships at UCLA and Nevada, and most recently, Bomber has offered one of his 3 scholarships to him. ASU is far ahead #1 on Hinds' list, at 89%.
Bomber has also addressed the issue of big men on his team, going after two 3* centers. The great thing about these pair of centers, is that they're BOTH 7'1''. Eto Deren is the #53 C out of Phoenix, and averaged 7.0 PPG for Slick Ice. Aubin Blizzard is the #41 center, out of Richmond CA, and averaged 11.0 PPG and 6.1 RPG for the Storm (Blizzard - Storm, get it?). Both are at 100%.
Today is November 12th, and the signing period starts on December 2nd. Hopefully by then, all three players will commit.

Marquette vs. Oklahoma State
Well, it looks like Coach Bomber's Arizona State Sun Devils will not get the chance to play their third straight ranked team in the tournament, as Oklahoma State upset #25 Marquette, 72-68. Dominic James had 11 points and 7 assists for the Golden Eagles, but SF Anderson's game high 17 points and 7 rebounds lifted the Cowboys past Marquette.

this is crazy. i go to ASU and so i know this team pretty well. good luck. only thing thats funny is your starting lineup and redshirting ty abbott. eric boateng is weak in real life and ty abbott is ridiculous. one of the reasons the real Devils are 3-0 in Pac-10 play including a win over UofA just hours ago!!
chestnutz6
January 10th, 2008, 04:23 AM
Yep, I knew Ty Abbott would be very good. But redshirting him would give me more years with him, and this year ASU has so many guards so not much playing time.
Boateng has done pretty well for me, not great or anything, but pretty good. ASU only has like 3 big men, so it's him or Woods.

There's a typo in this, in the player section. Instead of Chris Goldstein, it should be Chad. This was probably the best game I've had on 2k8 to date, and I always have competitive games with Oklahoma St.

Big news in the starting lineup as Coach Don Bomber has decided to make some changes as he's seeing how his players are doing in these first 3 games. Chad Goldstein had really impressed against Oklahoma State, and took Eric Boateng's spot. Goldstein is 65 ovr and 6'9'', while Boateng is 64 ovr and 6'10''.
PG Antwi Atuahene has also been replaced, and Jerren Shipp has taken his spot. Shipp moves to the SF spot, while natural SG Christian Polk will play the point.

(3-1) Arizona State Sun Devils vs. (3-4) Florida Gulf Coast Eagles
Sun Devils cruise again, winning 77-46 being Jeff Pendergraph's double double. Wasn't a close game from the start, as ASU jumped off to an early lead and never looked back, with a 43-29 lead at the break.
Once again the Sun Devils held an opposing team to 17 points in a half, as the Eagles only scored 17 in the second. James Harden was the leading scorer with 14 points, Pendergraph earned POTG with 11 points and rebounds, and Chad Goldstein had 10 points and 2 blocks. Rihard Kusiks had his second straight game with double digits, making 2 threes for 10 points.
Next up is ASU's only away game, at 2-2 Nebraska, a very methodical offensive team.

Recruiting
The in-season signing period has started, and there has been no shortage of excitement. The #1 recruit in the nation, PG Wesley Stiles, has signed with Ohio State. The Buckeyes also inked the #6 recruit, PF Kurt Hackstadt.
In the Pac-10, UCLA snatched the #8, #1 SF Judson Munir, and Arizona signed the #9 recruit, PG Roosevelt Lewis.
Meanwhile, Don Bomber has excited the State fans already, with his 5-1 record, and now his two twin towers, 7' Eto Deren and Aubin Blizzard. It's been known for several weeks that these two had verbally commited to ASU, but now it's official. 5* SF Jerrod Hinds is at 96%.\

Gahh, sorry for the long delays, quite a busy week for me, but thanks to the long weekend I should get more in.

December 5, 2007
(3-5) Delaware St. @ (5-1) Arizona St.
After a high scoring half of 40-31, the Sun Devils would never be down in the game, but Delaware always kept it close. Second half would be more of a defensive battle, as Delaware St simply couldn't break ASU's lead, as the Devils get their 6th win, 67-55.
James Harden led all scorers with 21 points on 3/3 3pt shooting, and Jeff Pendergraph had another good all around game with 14 points and 8 boards.
-------------------
December 8, 2007
(2-4) Coppin St. @ (6-1) Arizona St.
Another close game against a bad team. The Eagles of Coppin St. came out hitting all their shots, and opened up a double digit lead. Arizona St. fought back with their bench surprisingly, taking a 32-30 lead at halftime.
The Sun Devils would manage to hang on to this one, 58-51. "I am not at all happy with how these past two games have been played. These should be big wins, and going into next week (against Xavier), we can't play like this."
ASU turned it over 15 times and only shot 4/13 from downtown. Jeff Pendergraph led all scorers with 13 points and 8 rebounds, and Jamelle McMillan added 7 points, as did James Harden and Christian Polk.

December 15th: vs. (5-3) Xavier 82 ovr
The Musketeers have disappointed some this year, having only 5 wins early in the season. Senior SG Stanley Burrell (80) is something to be happy about for Xavier fans, avergaing 15.5 PPG. PG Drew Lavender (82) is averaging nearly 7 assists and 10 points despite his 5'7'' frame. Look for Jeff Pendergraph to abuse the Xavier big men, who only average 26 rebounds a game.

Well, from now on (at least for a while) I'm just gonna do regular write ups. I don't have the time to do that anymore, been very busy lately.
This was my first game with the patch.

(6-3) Xavier Musketeers @ (7-1) Arizona St. Sun Devils
December 15, 2007
Arizona St. managed to pull out their 8th win of the year tonight, thanks to a buzzer beater by Rihards Kusiks. "It was such a fantastic game, we've had so many this year, but this had to be the best," said an ecstatic COach Bomber afterwards.
Xavier dominated the beginning of the first half, ending the half with 8 second chance points, which gave them a 42-38 lead. The Sun Devils were turning the ball over left and right, but managed to convert on 5/7 three pointers, which kept them in this one.
In the second half it would continue to go back and forth, as neither of these teams wanted to back down. ASU finally took a seemingly commanding lead late in the game, holding a 7 point advantage with under a minute left, after frosh James Harden swished his free throws. Xavier came right down the court and answered with a three, and following two missed free throws on two straight trips to the line, the Musketeers tied it up at 78 with 5.4 seconds. Bomber subbed one of his best three shooters, Rihards Kusiks, a guy who never plays usually, in at PF. Harden got the inbounds, and was immediately trapped. He searched everywhere, and found Kusiks at midcourt with 2.4 seconds left. Kusiks took a couple dribbles and fired a three from the top of the key, hitting nothin by net.
