Mark Smith CB: Only other gold corner with coverage bonus, plus he's a returner. there's nothing flashy about him..he just covers and covers damn well.

Deacon Jones: perhaps the biggest example of the flawed attributes distribution. Deacon Jones is arguably the best defense end of all time, but why use him when you can pick Dexter Manley or Clyde Simmons at bronze who both have more attributes and play pretty much just as well?

Well I think Manley needs to be left alone. After all you are talking about the guy that was first to set the single game sack record, later to be broken by Derrick Thomas. Also Manley was a monster when he played. He just didn't make it to the Hall of Fame and had off field issues that cut his career short. If anything Jones should be more effective than Manley and simply leave Manley exactly where he is at.

Right. When I say "the only other" gold CB, that means Im acknowledging that there is one other one that does, which is willie brown. I have a mark smith, willie brown combo and he does dang well

Actually, I find Mark Smith to cover much better than Willie Brown. Brown always gets burnt for me, but Mark Smith never gets burnt.

You have to remember that just because he has more abilities doesn't make him play better. For example, Mike Haynes (now Mark Smith in the game) was so graceful, fast, athletic in real life. He might not have speed or quick feet in the game, but sure as hell plays like it.

Again, I think it's a case of the guy with less abilities simply being better at those specialties than the "all-around" guy who has more abilities but no true specialty.

Randy White is another good example; he's got the least amount of abilities of the DTs at the gold tier, but I think he rushes the passer better than all of them, from what I've seen.

Yeah, I don't pick players on their abilities anymore, I pick based on # of Pro Bowl appearances, HOF status, and how good they were in real life.

Thats why I like Mike Haynes (Mark Smith) so much, because he is in the HOF, and he was just sooo graceful and an amazing corner

Deacon Jones is a Gold Tear player and plays like a Gold tear. Dexter Manley is a bronze tear and plays like a bronze. I was watching the VP of Visual Concepts on some show about this game and even Golds with three abilities are better than bronzes with 4.

Legal issues made his contract void.

I didn't realise that. I thought it was wierd that there was a gold CB I hadn't heard of before. But I didn't take the time to look him up. Good thing I didn't... I'd still be looking for Mark Smith. :p

Does Mark Smith play exactly like Mike Haynes?

Also: I've found the attributes don't always mean that much. For instance, I'll take Karl Mecklenburg at silver ILB because I've simply found he plays a much better game than the other Silver ILB's, especially at pass-rushing (best at it in the game, as far as I can tell, for linebackers anyway).

Mark Smith plays similarly to Mike Haynes. He is graceful, IMO the fastest corner on the game. Also, hes sooo elusive on returns, especially when I let the CPU return for me. Also, his closing speed is the best of the gold corners IMO.

CLosing speed is sooooo invaluable IMO, because the WR never gets a step ahead, and if he does, the closing speed just catches him up.

I even made another Mike Haynes, so its like I have two. I made him with speed, closing speed, and coverage.

I've yet to play this game online at home so my 360 still says Haynes.
