I would like to start a new league for the 2008 Season. It will feature the following criteria:



1) Trades: Administrator Approval only to keep rosters accurate to real-life deals, all the way down to the minor-league A-ball level, if online minor leagues are included in the game.



2) Season Length: All 162 games


3) Season Start: Opening Day for your respective team. The season will be played according to your team's 2008 schedule.


4) Injuries: Will be turned on. I don't think MLB 2K8 has an option that allows you to assign injuries to specific players to keep those changes up-to-date, so we'll just have to rely on the random effects of game injuries.


5) The Designated Hitter will only be used in games played at American League ballparks.


6) League Difficulty and Controller Configuration will be determined before the start of the season. Not sure yet if there will be an option or not.

I want to play around 3 games using each control method on each difficulty level to determine if there is any advantage on one control scheme over the other.

I'd like to be able to add a conversion factor for using a harder control scheme over the other, such as adding a run or so to the harder control scheme, but I am unsure if that feature is possible.

Something I'd like to do instead if the first adjustment is unavailable would be to use your stronger play style on the road and your weaker play style at home to keep things more consistent.


7) Strikes and Balls League. No set ratio will be used. I believe in pitching any way you need to, in order to win.

I do not quite understand why one person would throw constant balls, because how can you win by walking tons of batters straight?

Also, I do not see how it's fair to force people to throw strikers every pitch. That hurts pitchers and we already have enough disadvantages for the pitcher as it is.



8) Playoff Structure just like MLB setup.



If I left out any other factors, please let me know and I'll give you my opinion on them.

For now, just leave your AOL/AIM screename, an email address I can contact you at, a Facebook/myspace profile I can contact you at, Live Gamertag, and which team you'd like to use. The more methods of communication we have, the better.

I'll be using the Mets though and I have to reserve the Yankees for a friend. Everyone else is available though.

I would like to have a full 30-player league by opening day, but I also want to make sure that the people who join are going to be around the whole season and play nearly all their games.

I read somewhere on here of just adding everyone in the league and playing a balanced schedule, but I do not want to do that, since that's not a real schedule.

Also, you will only play games on the day when they are scheduled to be played.

Well I'd like to, but there are a number of potential problems that would go along with doing that:



1) Will 2K Sports even LET me tweak the player ratings for the players?


2) Even IF they do let me change it, will they let me take these changes online, especially into a league?


3) How do we get an unbiased set of true values for all the players?


4) What formula would we use to calculate the values for each player in each category?



I would hope someone on here or around the net would create a "fixed" set of roster #'s that I could just integrate in or 2K Sports could make a patch.


If not, I'm hoping to get a guidance book for 2008...either Baseball America (Release Date: February 11), Baseball Prospectus (Release Date: February 18), or the Gold Mine (Release Date: February 15). I know they offer projections for the 2008 season, as does the official MLB.com website.

I am thinking of blending those two values together, but then I don't know how to translate those numbers into category ratings?



However, can anyone tell me for sure one way or the other if they can be edited, because I don't want to start planning out a huge project and then find out it cannot be done anyway!

1) I heard TheBoSox asking for entrance into a league and he mentioned using a certain team. That team is still available though as of now. However, when I asked for confirmation, I never got a response and I still don't have any information, outside of his screename on here. And I have messaged him on here and he has not yet responded yet.



2) Stroehmerbasebal originally made a request for a league where he could use the Cardinals and I messaged him about this league, but informed him that the Cardinals were on a wait list, but that he was still welcome in the league. Apparently, he either was not interested or did not get the message, because I have not heard further from him. When WhiteBlack switched from the Cardinals to the Blue Jays, I sent a second message informing him that the Cardinals are available. Still waiting for a response on that 2nd message.



3) One of the original sign-ups, but didn't give a team. Now has tried the Blue Jays on the thread, but they are already taken. However, he has given me a 2nd and 3rd choice, and I am awaiting final confirmation if he wishes to use the 2nd choice team origianlly given.



4) Casper663 made a post in this thread, expressing interest in the league, but really left no information. I sent him a message with further instructions. Have not heard back yet.



5) mrbochin23 only left his gamertag, but did not pick a team. A relatively new development though.

I'm not sure what options 2K Sports will give me. Basically, it's going to be one of 4 scenarios though:


1) You just forfeit flat-out.


2) The game is simulated, using your past games to simulate your play style.


3) The game is simulated, using the regular AI for whatever difficulty we decide to play as.


4) The game can be made up at a later date, akin to a rainout.


If not being able to play is going to be a recurring theme for you though, you probably should not play in this league.



What circumstances would cause you to not be able to play though and how frequently would they come up.



Having a myspace/facebook isn't a deal breaker, but I hope you have an AOL screename, because it'd be nice to be able to talk to everyone via a personal chat room (i.e.: I make a private chat room and invite you all to join it, if I need to talk to the leagues communally.)

I will put you first one the wait list for the Cardinals if they become available. Who knows? The Cardinals have already been discarded once, but I think the owner now of the Cardinals IS an actual Cardinal fan, so I would think that something would need to happen for him, outside of baseball, to not use them anymore. (such as perhaps having his xbox 360 red ring of death on him! lol.)


However, you need to pick one of the 15 teams left before I can lock you into the league.


Also, I don't think I can search by email for Facebook, so you're going to need to give me your 1st and last name or at least a direct link to your page.


Finally, I hope you have an AOL/AIM screename, so I can communicate with you communally, if need be, by the end of the season.

Hmmm...my main problem here is that your account was just created today and you only have 3 posts, you have no myspace/facebook, etc. It is entirely possible that you are a troll that wants to disrupt the account.

I'm not saying you ARE a troll, but the reason I ask for people's myspace/facebook is because I'm sure someone wouldn't be so entirely pathetic to make an account 6 months ago and update it rather frequently, but have that not be themselves. And if it does happen, it's a rather rare occurrence.


To sign up for a screename, you just need to have another email address. It does not have to be with AOL. For me, I don't have AOL for my AIM screename.


Anyway, which team would you like to use in the meantime. I guess I can consider your application overnight.

Yeah, that's no problem. I'm not sure why people think we can't play after 900.

Ideally, I would like to play each game at the time it says on the schedule, but I know that's not realistic.


However, we should try to get all games underway by 1040 or so, since that's usually the latest possible scheduled start during the season.

Eh...that's too few I think. That means you're still missing 40 games, which is 1/4 of the season. Especially if you're forced to forfeit all those games, you'd have to play 90-30 ball just to have a shot at the wild card, which is pretty unrealistic.

Well it seems that 120 games would be a best-case scenario for you and as such, I do not think this is the league for you. Even at 120 games, you'd have to play .750 just to have a chance at qualifying for the playoffs. Any more games missed could make it nearly impossible. If you played 110 games, you'd have to go 81-29 just to play .500 ball.

Unless you can afford to invest more time into this league, you might want to find another league to play in. At this point, I will lock in the Braves with Bizzle for now.


If you change your mind later, you could always pick one of the remaining teams leftover.

1) I heard TheBoSox asking for entrance into a league and he mentioned using a certain team. That team is still available though as of now. However, when I asked for confirmation, I never got a response and I still don't have any information, outside of his screename on here. And I have messaged him on here and he has not yet responded yet. I have tried to contact hum numerous times through AIM, but he never seems to answer me. Will not delete completely from consideration yet though, because all of these attempts have been through AIM express and not AIM itself, which does not allow me to see if a user has been idle for say 30 minutes. However, he has not responded to me in his own thread on here, nor on a Private Message. I find it unlikely now that he will end up participating, but will not delete from the list just yet.

Just 4 teams left. I am really excited about the progress of this league, but keep in mind I am unsure about the status of the Braves. A user had made a thread asking if a "solid league" was available and I messaged him about this league, but he never got back to me. However, he had a Braves avatar, so I assumed he wanted the Braves.

Anyone can claim the Braves now, but keep in mind that if I ever get a response from this guy, I'll have to give them back to him. As a result, you may want to list a secondary team, in case he takes the Braves as well.

Caps have no effect on AOL, so WALTERJOHNSON = WalterJohnson = walterjohnson. With that being said, you either will have to use an insanely unique word or attach some #'s on the end of your screename to find one that is not yet being used.

Well thanks but I am getting the server is busy try again. For two more hours I was unable to Get past the second screen from the AIM site you gave. You should probably use a combination of numbers to form your screename. For instance, combine 2 of your favorite Pads' players' #'s together.

And just open a new screen and start the process all over again. It's not a long process to begin with!

Maybe you're at the wrong web site or there is something wrong with your internet, because it took me about 2 and a half minutes to finish the whole process. As your screen name you could just put in your name and your last initial with your favorite number. Very few people will have the same name and favorite number as you. And if that's taken pick a random number.

Actually, there's 3 teams left, because if that guy doesn't get back to me, then you would take the Braves, but then the Dodgers would become available again.

I'm not sure yet. The first person fell through, because his Xbox is broke and he won't be home from college until May, and by the time it gets fixed, it will be June. He could serve as a mid-season replacement though, should anyone drop out.

The second prospect was my cousin, and I think I wrote down the wrong screename from over the summer, because he has not been online all month. However, I think I found him on Facebook, and am waiting for him to confirm my friend request, before I give him the league offer.

If he falls through, I also have a third prospect for them.

I have a missed trash and water bill, with NO FOOD. So I need to get these things taken care of before I buy the game. I would also need a subscription card because mine dies in July/August I am not sure. I just want to say thank you for being kind to me and letting me in your league. So the PADS are open to however reads this. If money and my job were better heck I would have no problem staying in your league. But they are not, and I don't want the landlord down here again saying I bought a game and food but no rent?

Well, remember our season doesn't start until the season starts. You mentioned hoping the game came out at the end of March, but most seasons don't start until March 31 or April 1 anyway, so that wouldn't be a problem?

Playing with a weaker team does not necessarily mean instant doom. It is just a different kind of game. You have to keep a closer eye on your AAA affiliates.

Also, if you can qualify for the playoffs or farther with a weaker team, then your apparent skill is even higher than if using a stronger team.


Of course, since your a yankee fan, you're probably not used to this sort of thing though.

Anyway, good luck!

However, he had a Braves avatar, so I assumed he wanted the Braves.

Anyone can claim the Braves now, but keep in mind that if I ever get a response from this guy, I'll have to give them back to him. As a result, you may want to list a secondary team, in case he takes the Braves as well.

The bolded text explains everything. Basically, if you had reclaimed the Dodgers before Football Guru asked for them, you would have gotten them back.

But because he asked for them first, you lose them.


Also, I am not sure if that guy is out yet, since he never answered my inquiry, so the Padres are not really available now, though I can put you on a wait list for them.

I cannot see how they would not. Outside of maybe standings, it would be pretty unreasonable to expect anyone to manually calculate 500 players' statistics after each day of the season.

Hey champion I know I withdrew from the league but I do know a way to get around the whole you don't have your xbox yet. Mine is at the repair center and I have had to do a lot of the same stuff now that my league is 1/3 full. You can get your gamertag on xbox.com and send the friend request right after that.

I just want to make sure everyone understands this is a closed schedule, in that you have to play your games on the day you are scheduled to, by your team.

The person who inquired about the Braves thought it was an open league, but that is not the case, because there are plenty of other leagues out there with that kind of setup.


I don't want to go overkill on this, but if you want, you could try to match your rotations with your real-life teams and even starting batting orders, if you play your game, after your team has played your game in real life.

I'm not sure how specific you want to align things, but that's your choice.

I am unsure what options I will have available to me, but either both managers will receive a loss or the game will be simmed.

If I have the choice though, I'll sim the first 5 or 10 games, and then start awarding losses for each game not played.

Sorry, I meant you can have 5 or 10 games all season where you can reschedule a game as a "rainout." In that case, the game will just be rescheduled as part of a doubleheader whenever their team comes back to your field.

If they do not come back to your field during the year, you'll need to find a common off-day during the regular season.


However, after you have exceeded that quota, your games will either be simmed or you'll get a loss, whatever I think is appropriate.

3) Player Ratings Problems: This is a newer problem, but someone requested that the ratings provided by 2KSports be changed, because they are inaccurate.

I would say he probably has a 50% chance to get the Marlins. I'm really not sure what to expect from this guy that I'm trying to put in as the Marlins.

I went to high school with him and he's a big Marlins fan and loves baseball.

OK...here's how the pending scenarios are working out right now:


1) Marlins: The Marlins are taken regardless. However, 2 scenarios can unfold:

However, the problem here is more, me being able to get ahold of Matthew, more than him playing the league. I am pretty positive he will want to play, as long as I can track him down. Alex on the other hand is more 50/50.


Summary:

The Yankees and Marlins are taken for sure.
The Red Sox have a slight chance (maybe 20%) of being available at all and even so, would not be available until the last few days before opening day.
The Padres have a 50% chance of being available.
The Giants are available right now for claiming.

I'm not going to allow claiming of the Red Sox in advance right now, because I am pretty sure that is not going to happen. However, you can claim the Padres now if the Marlins deal falls through.

And of course, you can guarantee membership into the league now by taking the Giants!

I was just thinking overnight that I should spend some time, trying to convince any prospective players out there, of what upsides there are, of using the Giants.

I have compiled a list of projected stats for the 2008 season from the MLB.com 2008 Fantasy Baseball Preview lines. A sample lineup follows below:


1) LF Dave Roberts (ranked 99th, equivalent to Cristian Guzman, 410 AB's, .271, 65 Runs scored, 2 HR, 24 RBI's, 29 Stolen Bases, .348 OBP, .351 Slugging, .699 OPS)

The bullpen for the Giants is largely unknown. However, Randy Messenger and Brad Hennessey will most likely be part of it, of which I can only find Brad Hennessey's projection:

Setup Man Brad Hennessey (ranked 48th, equivalent to Pat Neshek, 5-5, 8 SV, 73 IP, 66 H, 28 BB, 44 K, 3.71 ERA, 1.29 WHIP)




Summary:



I) Positives:


1) TWO starting pitchers who will approach 200 strikeouts and have the capacity to dominate a game.

2) THREE starting pitchers who will log approximately 200 innings.

3) THREE serviceable pitchers with ERA's around 4.00-4.50.

4) NO DUDS in the lineup. Every hitter expected to bat between .255 and .287.

5) 79 Stolen Bases combined among the 8 batters on the Giants, which is about average.



II) Negatives:


1) No one will bat .300. No one will get a .350 OBP. No one will slug .450.

2) No one will hit 20 HR's. In fact the 3-4-5 part of the order will maintain their usual "power" role of the lineup, for being the only hitters to get 10+ HR's during the season.

The team is only projected to hit 76 HR's all year, 3 more than Bonds alone in his record season.

3) No one will get 100 RBI's. The 3-4-5 part of the order will all collect between about 60-75 RBI's. Only 1 other batter will eclipse 50 RBI's in the rest of the order.





Coclusion: What playing as the Giants boils down to is that you need to get equal production out of each of your hitters to piece together an average offense. You need to make sure that your 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation gets reasonably close to the 1-2 punch of Johnson and Schilling of the 2001 Diamondbacks. Each teams' 3-4-5 starters are comparable. You need to get a slightly above average core of 3 relievers. Randy Messenger, Brad Hennessey, Brian Wilson. Jonanthan Sanchez as a long reliever. Kevin Frandsden as a utility player. Add in enough skill on your own end and you might just have what it takes to make it into the playoffs in this elite, comprehensive legue!


P.S.: This entry took about 2 hours to compile and write up, so comments would be appreciated, from those already in the league, those who just read it, and/or those who are interested as playing with the Giants in 2008!

I don't boot players at random. I never booted you in the first place. You quit on your own. I told you I might have to move you because of a mixup and you could have one of the remaining teams.

There were about 5 teams left at the time. Now, only wait lists are available at the moment, although some uncertainty still exists about who will end up taking the Red Sox, Padres, and Giants.

I know there has not been much activity here in this thread for awhile, but that does not mean I have disappeared.

There have just not been many new developments as of late.


I will slightly bump up the chance of the Padres being available to low-end likely pops at 60%, because of my first contact from Alex O. saying that his Xbox is not in Florida with him and that he does not have that game, and thus he cannot play in the league.

However, I sent a message back to him, pointing out that he can pick up his Xbox when he goes home for Easter and that the game is coming back next week.

The reason I only bumped up the chance of the Padres availability slightly is because he did not express any problem with playing the whole year and that he actually has the Xbox.


In terms of Matt F., the one on Facebook messaged me back as not having AIM at all, which seems contradictory to him giving me his screename back in August, which leads me to think that isn't him.

So I need to keep searching my room for the paper with his screename on it. Red Sox availability remains at 20%.

Sorry for not updating this thread more. With the roster nearly full, I grew tired of logging in, just to find no new posts.

But I figured I should check up on it this morning. No teams are actually available for me to hand you ownership right now.

However, 3 teams have not been confirmed, and as a result, you can claim them, and when I resolve the issue surrounding them, either the original claim or you get them.


1) Dodgers (80% chance of becoming available.): Bill has just posted that he has quit the league, but I want to try to IM him about staying in the league. Basically want to see for what reason he decided to quit, and see if we can accomodate him.

However, he seems like someone who puts a lot of thought into his decisions. So for whatever reason, I don't think he feels comfortable in this league.


2) Padres (60% chance of becoming available.): This is just due to a lingering hangup on ownership of the Marlins. I have 2 claims on them and the first one has been somewhat slow to communicate with me. If he takes the Marlins, the Padres are taken, but if he does not, then the 2nd one gets the Marlins, and the Padres are available.


3) Red Sox (20% chance of becoming available.): This is also just due to a lingering hangup on ownership of the Yankees. I originally reserved the Yankees for one person, but have since lost track of his screename and now I cannot seem to find it. Once I do find it though, he will most certainly be in the league, as he plays video games quite frequently (he has all 3 versions of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,) but is just a matter of me finding that information.

I already have someone else lined up for the Yankees though. However, the Red Sox would then be available.

hey...just wanted to let everyone know I'm still here. I've recently become engrossed by the gem known as Super Smash Brothers Brawl. If you have a Wii, you should pick this up IMMEDIATELY!

either way, I will finally try to pin everything down, in terms of people and teams, this weekend, although it's really only those 5 teams: yankees, red sox, marlins, padres, and dodgers, where things are not completely etched in stone and as I said earlier, the yankees, marlins, and dodgers are taken no matter what happens from here on out.

Ideally, I want to get the final roster confirmed by the Friday before the season, so I can spend the weekend inserting the correct schedules.

I REALLY don't want to spend Sunday night cramming the schedules in, because that's just begging for a mistake, and I am going to attend the Yankees' home opener, and I want to be fully fresh for that game on Monday.

OK...I believed it was time to bring some organization to this thread and attempt to start the season on time, so I spent the past 3 hours, taking the following steps:


1) Sent EVERYONE on the 2K Sports forums who has picked a team for this league, a private message (PM), asking you all to confirm your picked teams. The post above shows your screename and which team you currently have.

Since you are currently on this thread, I would ask you to please post here, CONFIRMING that you are, indeed, interested in playing in this league, which completes your registration process.


2) Sent everyone who gave me an email address, one, basically telling you the same thing.


3) I have added all of your screenames on my list. However, please do not edit yours out, as this still helps as a reference point for me.


4) I have attempted to message everyone on their gamertags, but unfortunately you have to have GOLD membership to do that, I was not able to do that. However, I tried a work around solution, in which I added FABFREDDY4 on there, and then left instructions in my profile biography to him, to email everyone else on this list for me, but I am unsure if he got them yet.

If any of you are reading this, PLEASE email everyone in this league (in the post above, their gamertags are in parentheses,) to ensure their participation in this league. If you each want to do 4 or 5, that is fine too, but try to coordinate on here, who is emailing which 5, so the same 5 people do not get 6 identical inquiries.

The four sites I posted an almost identical thread to this one are: Operation Sports (champion88,) GameFAQ's (super_smash77,) IGN (champion88), and the Xbox forums under MLB 2K8 (supersmash77.)



I would like everyone to have responded to me, confirming their current interest in playing in this very league, by 3 PM EDT by Saturday, March 23.

After then, your team is no longer safe, and if I find a substitute for you, you might be replaced. Please do not let that happen to you.



I have tried all I could to preserve the potential this league has. Let us make this work!


One last note: I will not have my Xbox 360 until early next week, so messaging me via gamertags will not work for now. That is why I am asking others to get ahold of others via Gamertags for me, instead of doing it myself.

Yeah im still in. I dont have a gold membership yet but ill have one in a few weeks.
