Texas A&M - A Legacy in the Making 2007-2008

Head Coach

http://www.aggieathletics.com/sports/coaches/mugs/turgeon-mark-mug.jpg

Mark Turgeon brings an accomplished basketball pedigree with him as he enters his first season as head basketball coach at Texas A&M.

“I’m thrilled to have Mark and his wonderful family join us in Aggieland,” A&M Director of Athletics Byrne said. “He’s one of America’s brightest young coaches, with a great heritage of basketball history. In most circles, you’re known by the company you keep. Larry Brown, Roy Williams, Bill Self and John Calipari among others have influenced Mark personally and professionally during his career. I know the Aggie Family will come to appreciate Mark the same way I do. He is a winner on and off of the court.”

In seven years as head coach at Wichita State (2000-07), Turgeon built the Shockers into one of the premier teams in the Missouri Valley Conference, culminating in a conference title and NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2006.

In the 2006 NCAA Tournament, WSU knocked off Seton Hall and Tennessee before falling to eventual Final Four participant George Mason. Turgeon was named the 2006 MVC Coach of the Year.

He built a 128-89 record (.590) at WSU, third most wins in school history. He posted a 104-56 record (.650) in his final five seasons, an average of 20.8 victories per year. He led the Shockers to three straight NITs from 2003-05 in addition to the 2006 NCAAs, the first time WSU had four straight postseason appearances in 40 years.

WSU had a school-record 14 sellouts at Charles Koch Arena (10,478 capacity) in 2005-06 and its average attendance of 10,436 ranked the Shockers among the top 40 programs in the country.

Prior to WSU, he served as head coach at Jacksonville State for two seasons (1998-00), posting a 17-11 record in his second year after finishing 8-18 in his inaugural campaign. He led the Game***** to a 12-6 record and a tie for third-place in the Trans America Conference in his final year.

The 42-year-old Turgeon’s overall record in nine years as a head coach is 153-119 (.563).

He served as an assistant coach at Kansas for five seasons, first under Larry Brown (1987-88) and then under Roy Williams (1988-92). The Jayhawks made the NCAA Tournament four of those seasons, capturing the national championship in 1988 and finishing second in 1991. Kansas won back-to-back Big Eight Conference titles in 1991-92.

Turgeon was the top assistant under Jerry Green at Oregon from 1992-97, where he worked briefly with Byrne, who was the athletics director at Oregon until August of 1992. Turgeon helped the Ducks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 34 years.

He was an assistant coach under Brown with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers in 1997-98 before accepting the head coaching position at Jacksonville State.

A point guard at Kansas from 1984-87, he was the first player in Jayhawks history to play in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments, helping the team to a 108-33 record under Brown. Turgeon served as team captain in 1986 and 1987, leading the Jayhawks to the 1986 NCAA Final Four. He was named to the Big Eight All-Academic Team in 1986 and was selected to the Big Eight All-Freshman Team in 1984.

He earned a bachelor of science degree in Personnel Administration from Kansas in 1987.

A native of Topeka, Kan., Turgeon led Hayden High School to back-to-back Class 4A state championships in 1982 and 1983, earning all-state tournament honors each year. A first-team all-state performer as a senior, he helped Hayden to a 47-3 record in his career.

Turgeon is married to the former Ann Fowler of Chicago, Ill., and they have two sons -- William Harris and Leo – and a daughter, Ella.

Reed Arena

http://www.aggieathletics.com/sports/facilities/images2004/full/reedarena.jpg

Reed Arena, a 12,989-seat special events center located on the west side of campus, opened in the fall of 1998.

Reed Arena serves as the home for Texas A&M men's and women's basketball teams after 44 years in G. Rollie White Coliseum for the men and 24 seasons for the women. Complete with the amenities of a NBA arena and the atmosphere of a collegiate setting, Reed Arena provides A&M with one of the best basketball arenas in the southwest and provides first-class accommodations not only for Aggie basketball but for major concerts, commencement ceremonies and a variety of other events.

The arena is named for Houston veterinarian Dr. Chester J. Reed, a 1947 graduate of A&M, and his wife, Billie Jean. In 1986, the Reeds contributed 265 acres of undeveloped land west of Houston to the university, forming the nucleus of assets used to fund the facility.

Reed Arena was constructed by Huber, Hunt & Nichols, Inc., of Dallas, and was designed by the architectural/engineering firm of Lockwood, Andrews and Newman, Inc., of Houston.

The facility contains the main arena, a full-size practice gym, meeting rooms, performance support and administrative space, visitor/home team dressing rooms and parking.

The playing surface for the Aggies is a parquet wood floor that was originally delivered and displayed in Reed Arena on August 12, 1998. It was constructed by Robbins Floors in Cincinnati, Ohio and measures 60 feet by 112 feet.

There are 210 sections that make up the main playing floor, each weighing approximately 190 pounds. On average, it takes six adults about five hours to assemble.

One of the many amenities for the Aggies in Reed Arena is the full-size practice gym located on the bottom floor of the east side of the facility, conveniently next to the Aggies' locker room.

The gym is large enough to house six portable baskets/standards, helping to maximize the Aggies' practice time. Regardless of what event is being held in the main arena, the practice gym allows the Aggies to always have a gym to workout in.

The Aggies' dressing room is conveniently located between the main floor and the practice gym in a non-public area of Reed Arena. A private elevator is available for squad members to have an easier time entering and exiting the facility.

The dressing room has large lockers, with mirrors and lights in each, as well as secure areas in each to keep valuables. A separate players’ lounge area with a stereo and big-screen television anchor the rooms, while private showers and restroom facilities make the locker room more like home.

A full size training room is adjacent to the dressing room and is designed so that members of both the men's and women's teams can use the area at the same time. The training room contains two whirlpools, three treatment stations and two taping areas. All of the latest medical supplies are readily available to the medical staff in the Reed Arena training room.

There are 10 meeting rooms in Reed Arena which can house a variety of events. Pregame and postgame gatherings are planned for many games and will regularly occupy the 6,000 square foot room high atop the second level on the east side.

Since Reed Arena is owned by the University and not the Athletic Department, it is operated by Texas A&M's Special Event Facilities Department under the direction of Steven M. Hodge.

A&M's Frontcourt Ranked Among Nation's Best

For Immediate Release
Thursday, October 4, 2007

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Texas A&M will have one of the nation's best frontcourts this season, according to collegehoops.net.

With the return of senior Joseph Jones (6-9), sophomore Bryan Davis (6-9) and sophomore Chinemelu Elonu (6-10), along with the addition of freshmen DeAndre Jordan (7-0) and Denzel Bowles (6-10), the Aggies could be a dominant team inside.

The website ranks the A&M frontcourt as the ninth-best in the nation and the best in the Big 12.

"Despite the loss of Antanas Kavaliauskas, the Aggies will still have a formidable duo up front with Jones and Jordan," the website wrote earlier this week. "Jones declared for the NBA Draft, but made the smart decision by returning to school. He is very strong and is difficult to stop once he gets position on the block. Jones also has a decent shooting touch from the mid-range. Jordan is one of the top incoming centers in the country. He can score inside, and is also adept at getting offensive rebounds and putbacks. Davis has shown flashes of his potential."

Collegehoops.net's top 10 frontcourts:

1. North Carolina State

2. Stanford

3. California

4. Louisville

5. Georgetown

6. North Carolina

7. UCLA

8. Arkansas

9. Texas A&M

First-year men’s coach Mark Turgeon welcomes back three starters from last season’s NCAA Sweet 16 team, along with a nationally-ranked recruiting class. A&M is led by senior Joseph Jones, a preseason All-America candidate, senior Dominique Kirk and junior Josh Carter. Carter led the nation in three-point percentage last season.

Led by fifth-year women’s coach Gary Blair, the defending Big 12 Conference champions return all five starters from a year ago including All-Big 12 performers A’Quonesia Franklin, Morenike Atunrase, Takia Starks, Danielle Gant and La Toya Micheaux. Mark Turgeon Quotes from Wednesday's Big 12 Men's Basketball Media Day

For Immediate Release
October 11, 2007

KANSAS CITY, Mo.- The transcript of Texas A&M Coach Mark Turgeon's comments at the Big 12 Men's Basketball Media Day on Wednesday in Kansas City:

TEXAS A&M HEAD COACH MARK TURGEON

Big 12 men's Basketball Media Day

Marriott Country Club Plaza * Kansas City, Mo.

PETER IRWIN: We're now joined by Coach Mark Turgeon. Welcome to our media day.

MARK TURGEON: Thank you. Just real quickly, I'm obviously excited about being in the Big 12. I had a great job and wasn't going to leave for any job. If I was going to move up, a so?called move up in our profession, I was going to hopefully do it in the Big 12. I'm excited about being at Texas A&M and looking forward to all the battles that lie ahead.

Q. Is it easier or is it more difficult taking over a program that's had success?

MARK TURGEON: Well, right now it's been easier because we have good players. And that was the whole reason that I took the job. So to this point it's been easier, but now that the season is starting and the polls are coming out and the expectations are really high in our program which is really good and what we want, but we did lose some really good players. We have some young players that had to step up. I think the thing about our program that we have to understand is we have nine freshmen and sophomores this year, and a lot of those young kids will play for us. We'll get better as the season goes on type thing. It's been a lot easier at this point knowing that the expectations may make it a little tougher over the next five or six months.

Q. Obviously everybody knows you've got some talent there, I think the two questions are how quickly Donald Sloan takes over that presence and how quickly DeAndre Jordan is able to assimilate himself at this level?

MARK TURGEON: I don't want everybody to assume that Donald Sloan is going to be our point guard, because he played back up point for about three seconds because Acie Law was never out of the game. Donald is going to play some point for us. Whether he's going to be our starting point guard or not has not been determined.

I've been impressed with him. Donald can score the ball. I want to put ?? Dominique Kirk has done a tremendous job for us in practice. He has more the mindset to be my point guard. You also have B.J. Holmes, who is a highly thought of young man coming out of high school.

Sloan is going to play point, but he's also going to play some 2. And maybe as the year goes on he'll get better. Right now it's not his natural position, didn't play it in high school. He brought the ball up sometimes last year to get the ball to Acie in a different position on the floor. But he's a heck of a talent.

DeAndre Jordan, speaking of talents, is obviously a big time talent. And he can block shots. I spent a lot of years at the University of Kansas and we had had a lot of good players, and obviously Danny Manning being one of them. He has the most talent I've seen, but it's really raw talent. He's not skilled at the level he needs to be skilled, which he will be, for him to be successful all the time on the floor. And we've been working with him now for about six, seven weeks. He's come a long ways. He's come a long ways quickly. He's going to have a tremendous year for us and a great career. But people have to be patient with him out there and understand that he's been so highly talked of, it's the biggest recruit A&M has had in a long time. There's a lot of pressure on him. We want him to relax and get better. The best thing about DeAndre is a great kid, but he's a little young. He's 18 going on about 12 sometimes, so he wears me out with the text messaging at night and different things. He always wants to know what's going on. When he matures and starts maturing and stays like this, and not so emotional, he's going to be a heck of a player.

Q. Joe Jones has had some knee problems in the past. How is he doing right now?

MARK TURGEON: Joe's knees are fine. They hurt in conditioning. That's the only time they hurt. He doesn't want to run conditioning. I think he did it to the coach last year and he did it to me this year. We had his knees checked out, just for the piece of mind, so all the NBA folks know that. Joe is just a big man that runs a little different than most people. We've worked on his running style, trying to make him run a little bit better. He's worked with some people to try to make him run better. But right now Joe has a sprained foot. I'll be honest with you, I haven't coached Joe up and down yet, so I don't know much about Joe except he's a great leader and great kid. Today is supposed to be his first practice, so I'm looking forward to that. His knees are fine, and if we can get his foot healthy, I think Joe is going to have a great year.

Q. We all know Josh Carter is a great perimeter shooter, but what are your first impressions of him as a player that can really help the program?

MARK TURGEON: I think our system is perfect for him. When we were at Kansas our 2's and 3's always did well. And Wichita State, guys that I coached are all?time 3?point career leaders in percentage, and most shots made. So I think it's going to be a great system for him. What we've been working with Josh on since we took the job on April 10th is trying to improve his all around game and handling the basketball, mid?range game.

Josh would shoot the 3 or take it all the way to the basket, in all the films I've watched. We're trying to use his height to get in the paint and have a mid?range game. If he can add all that, get to the foul line more, that will help. Then defensively we're just continuing to try to give him confidence to get better. He's got the length to be a great defender. And then he's just a great kid. You're going to have to ask them how they feel about me and how they feel about our system, but I think everybody is pretty excited about it.

Q. You mentioned Dominique a little bit. He's been a little bit overlooked because of Acie last year and so forth, but he's always seemed to be a steady hand. What do you see from him that can provide leadership, especially as a point guard?

MARK TURGEON: Dominique brings it every day. If I made him run 100 sprints, 17 guys would quit and Dominique would run all 100 sprints. That's just the kind of kid he is and the way his parents raised him. What I see in him is a guy that's going to do whatever the coach asks. And then he's very intelligent. He can pick up multiple positions and I can explain it and show it to him and he can do it right every time. With him having to take more of an offensive load, leading the team, being an extension of the coach I'm hoping that he doesn't always have to defend the best player this year, which he's done in the past. I'm sure he will all the time. But hopefully Josh will step up.

We have two great defenders in Derrick and Donald. They get right in there and do a tremendous job. So hopefully that will help Dominique. He does get overlooked because he's a quiet kid. Probably his biggest weakness is he's not very vocal on the floor. But he leads by example. If we can get him to talk a little bit more ?? and hopefully being a former point guard, I can help him and Donald become good point guards as the year goes on.

Q. You have only had a few years with your team, but now that you've got the whole team together, is it like what you thought it was going to be with them? Has there been any particular surprises, either athletically or ?? is it what you thought?

MARK TURGEON: When I first moved there, athletically was the biggest, it was, wow, what a jump from what I had, was able to accrue at Wichita. As far as work habits go, being a team, there really hasn't been any surprises. They're young men that want to be coached and want to be successful. The thing I like most, you know you have a chance to be good when the players care just as much or more than the coach does.

It's our livelihood so we put a lot into it, but when young men are invested the way these young men are invested you have a great chance to be good. They are all truly invested in our success. A guy that is really practicing well for us is Chinemulu Elonu, a junior, trying to simplify things, he can be a great screener. He gets every rebound. He'll knock his own players over to get a rebound. He's been good with that. Our system is pretty simple right now, we'll see as it gets more complex how he can handle it. But right now in practice ?? without Joe out there, too, he's really kind of stepped up and a guy I've been pleasantly surprised in. He's just lacking confidence. When he gets his confidence up I think he's a guy that maybe a lot of people aren't counting on helping us this year that will maybe help us.

PETER IRWIN: Best of luck. Have a great season.

Maroon Madness: Hip-Hop Meets The Hardwood

For Immediate Release
Friday, October 12, 2007

http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2006/1014/ncb_maroonmadness_275.jpg

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- It was hip-hop meets the hardwood Friday night at a sold-out Reed Arena. One of the hottest events to hit the Bryan/College Station area, Maroon Madness 2007 headlined by teen rap sensation Soulja Boy, created the perfect blend of the two. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o-FhdVfJic&feature=related)

Yes, it’s officially basketball season in Aggieland. And fittingly enough, the nationally-ranked Texas A&M men’s and women’s basketball teams kicked off the 2007-08 season in style. No longer a stranger to the national spotlight, Aggie Basketball (like Soulja Boy) continues to climb the charts. Picked as preseason top 15 favorites by several national publications and being recognized by the league’s coaches as top contenders in the Big 12 Conference, there’s no greater time to be an Aggie.

Performing his Billboard No. 1 hit single “Crank That,” Soulja Boy was a hit with the crowd and so were the Aggies. Freshman DeAndre Jordan was crowned the slam dunk champion after narrowly defeating fellow freshman Nathan Walkup (who earned fan-favorite honors after his impromptu Crank That dance performance at midcourt), while juniors Danielle Gant and Takia Starks won the two-ball competition for the women. Both teams kept things light with fun on-court drills and freestyle dancing at center court during Soulja Boy’s final performance of the night.

Then came the part of the night that Aggies fans were most excited for. It was time for the annual scrimmage that occurs for the devoted Aggie fans to see how their team will look for the upcoming season. Both teams played strong, but in the end the White team clipped the Maroon team 92-87.

There were many positive aspects, but also some negative things that were seen in the scrimmage. Probably the biggest positive aspect was that the Maroon team really struggled to stop DeAndre Jordan due to his size and athletic ability. However, to try to cancel out their size disadvantage, the Maroon team tried to play an up-tempo game and shot many threes, maybe too many, as they only hit 19%. Also, NBA candidate Joseph Jones struggled against sophomore forward Byran Davis, as he was held to only 9 points. But this is proof that the Aggie front-court is legit, and ready for battle this season.

Key Performers

White

Josh Carter 21 points, 4 steals, 3-8 3pt
DeAndre Jordan 19 points, 12 rebounds
Dominique Kirk 16 points, 5 steals, 6-7 FG

Maroon

D Lewis 21 points, 3 rebounds, 3-4 3pt
Bryan Davis 18 points, 9 rebounds
B Graham 18 points, 2 steals, 1-8 3pt

First-year men’s coach Mark Turgeon and the Aggies open play on Nov. 13 against Oral Roberts in the NIT Season Tip-Off at Reed Arena.

Jones Makes Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 List

For Immediate Release
Friday, October 26, 2007

LOS ANGELES- Texas A&M senior Joseph Jones is among the top 50 preseason candidates for the 2007-08 John R. Wooden Award, the nation’s most coveted college basketball award. The list was announced by The Los Angeles Athletic Club’s Wooden Award Committee.

Jones also was one the preseason top 50 list last season while teammate Acie Law IV went on to become one of the four finalists. Jones averaged 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds as a junior and is a preseason first-team All-Big 12 selection.

Two returning Wooden All-Americans made the list, center Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina and Kansas guard Brandon Rush. Five schools had two players on the list: UCLA (Darren Collison, Josh Shipp), North Carolina (Hansbrough, Ty Lawson), Kansas (Mario Chalmers, Rush), Washington State (Derrick Low, Kyle Weaver), Georgetown (Roy Hibbert, Johnathan Wallace). More than 100 players received at least one vote.

The list is composed of 50 student athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball’s most coveted trophy. These top 50 candidates are comprised of returning players. Transfers, freshmen, and medical redshirts are not eligible for this preseason list, but will be evaluated and considered for both the Midseason Top 30 list and the National Ballot. Players not on the preseason list are eligible for the midseason top 30 and ballot.

A total of 16 NCAA conferences are represented. The Pac-10 leads the way with 10 Wooden Award All American team candidates. Other conferences include the Big East (eight players), the ACC (seven players), the Big 12 (six players), the SEC (five players), the Big Ten (two players), the Sun Belt (two players), Western Athletic (two players), Conference USA (one player), Southern Conference (one player), the Sun Belt (one player), the Horizon League (one player), the Colonial Athletic Association (one player), the Big South (one player), West Coast (one player) and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (one player).

In January, the Wooden Award committee will release the Midseason Top 30 list, followed by the distribution of the National Ballot to more than 1,000 voters in early March. The 10-player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the Tuesday after the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament is completed.

The 2008 Award ceremony, which will include the presentation of the Men’s and Women’s John R. Wooden Award, the Wooden Award All-American Teams, and the Legends of Coaching Award to recipient Pat Summitt of the University of Tennessee, will be held at The Los Angeles Athletic Club the weekend of April 11-13, 2008. The top five male and female finalists will be invited to Los Angeles for the Award’s ceremony and will receive a contribution from The Los Angeles Athletic Club for their university’s general scholarship fund. One of these five players will be named the John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year at a live televised announcement from The Club where he is awarded the prestigious five-figured bronze trophy.

About the John R. Wooden Award

Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation’s best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird (’79), Michael Jordan (’84), Tim Duncan (’97), and last year’s recipients, Kevin Durant of Texas and Candace Parker of Tennessee.

Since its inception, the John R. Wooden Award has contributed close to a million dollars to universities’ general scholarship fund in the names of the All-American recipients, as well as sent over 1,000 underprivileged children to week-long college basketball camps in the awards name. Additionally, the John R. Wooden Award partners with Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) each year to host the Wooden Award Special Olympics Southern California Basketball Tournament. The day-long tournament, which brings together Special Olympic athletes and the All-American selections, takes place at The Los Angeles Athletic Club on the Friday prior to the John R. Wooden Award Ceremony.

Aggies Picked to Finish Third in Preseason Big 12 Coaches Poll

For Immediate Release
November 1, 2007

IRVING, Texas- Big 12 Conference men's basketball coaches have picked Texas A&M to finish third in the 2008 conference race.

For the second consecutive year, Kansas is the preseason favorite to win the conference title in voting by the league’s head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. The Jayhawks received 10 of 12 possible first-place votes.

A&M earned the other two first-place votes and was picked third with 101 points. The Aggies are coming off the best season in school history (27-7) and will be led by seniors Joseph Jones and Dominique Kirk along with junior Josh Carter.

The poll results are kind of a surprise because Texas barely cracked the Top 15 in the Preseason Polls, and the Aggies were thought of to have solidified their position as a powerhouse in the conference. It appears once again they will have to prove themselves to the country.

Aggies get Minor Challenge to Open up Season (Game Preview)

For Immediate Release
November 12, 2007

Tomorrow is the day that all members of Aggieland have been getting ready for. Tomorrow the doors to Reed Arena will open, officially, for the first time this season, as the Aggies prepare for the first game in the NIT Season Tip-Off, against the Golden Eagles from Oral Roberts.

Oral Roberts is a great mid-major team, who is a member of the newly formed Summit League. In the NCAA Tournament last year, Oral Roberts appeared to be a sleeper team in many brackets, and while holding close for most of the game, was not able to compete with Washington St. for a complete 40 minutes and were forced to hang their heads in defeat.

Oral Roberts lost stars Caleb Green and Ken Tutt from last years team, but still look like they have a great chance to make a run back to the Tournament this year. Marchello Vealy and Adam Liberty are the two premier starters back from last years team. Although neither player averaged over 10 points a game, both showed potential to be able to lead the Golden Eagles at different points last season.

So now the time has come, for all fans in Aggieland to stand up and be heard, because now is the time when the Aggies will stand up to the competition, and make a run in the NCAA Tournament!!

Carter Lights Out, Aggies Roll

For Immediate Release
November 13, 2007

http://images.sportsline.com/u/photos/basketball/college/img10471356.jpg

On a day where both Texas A&M and Oral Roberts opened up their seasons, the Aggies showed that they are legit contenders in the Big 12 as they rolled by Oral Roberts 90-79.

Josh Carter paced the Aggies today, scoring a game-high 35 points, as his three fell from all over the court. A&M controlled this game at the half, and had a 54-34 lead coming out of the locker room. However, foolish turnovers helped keep this game closer then what it really should have been. Oral Roberts would never quite go away, as they got the game within seven points late in the second half. But the depth of the Aggies showed, as Derrek Lewis came off the bench and hit a backbreaking three to quiet the Golden Eagles bench.

The poignant post play of the Aggies struggled today, as Joseph Jones struggled, and DeAndre Jordan got in early foul trouble and was never really a factor in this one.

Key Performers

Texas A&M

Josh Carter 35 Points, 6 Rebounds, 6-7 3PT
Joseph Jones 7 Points, 8 Rebounds, 3-9 FG
DeAndre Jordan 10 Points, 6 Rebounds

Oral Roberts

Adam Liberty 9 Points, 8 Rebounds, 3 Steals
Curtis Allen 24 points, 3 Rebounds, 5 Assists, 4 Steals
Shawn King 3 Points, 6 Rebounds, 2 Steals, 3 Blocks

Texas A&M will host the finals of the South Region in the NIT Season Tip-Off as they host Texas-Corpus Christi, who features a premier scorer in Chris Daniels. The game will be played tomorrow at Reed Arena.

Kirk, Carter clutch late, Aggies win Tough One

http://images.sportsline.com/u/photos/basketball/college/img10473706.jpg

In a game the Aggies were heavily favored to win, clutch performances where needed down the stretch to secure the win, as Corpus Christi played strong but at the end could not secure the win as the Aggies pulled out a close one, winning 92-88.

The Aggies led this one 44-38 at the half, but struggled with their defense in the second half and allowed Corpus Christi to stay close throughout. Chris Daniels carried Corpus Christi in the second half, and DeAndre Jordan did the same for the Aggies. Nonetheless, the Aggies trailed for most of the game. Once again, Joseph Jones did little for the Aggies, scoring only 3 points and having 5 rebounds before fouling out. But with the game tied at 88, Dominique Kirk and Josh Carter hit back-to-back shots to secure the lead and win, as the Aggies pull out a tough one but at the end get the win.

Key Performers

Texas A&M

Josh Carter: 21 Points, 4 Rebounds, 4 Assists, 2 Steals
DeAndre Jordan: 18 Points, 7 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 3 Blocks
Bryson Graham: 15 Points, 4 Rebounds, 3 Assists

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi

Chris Daniels: 19 Points, 7 Rebounds, 4 Assists, 2 Blocks
Isaiah Jackson: 20 Points, 8 Rebounds, 2 Assists
William Bullard: 14 Points, 12 Rebounds, 2 Assists

The Aggies (2-0) return to action next Wednesday, as they take on UW-Green Bay in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off. UW-Green Bay upset Ohio St. at Columbia to make it to this semifinals match up. They are led by Terry Evans, who averages 15 points and 12 rebounds a game, as well as Mike Schactner, who also averages 15.

Mark Turgeon Quotes from Monday's Interview

For Immediate Release
November 19, 2007

New York City, New York- The transcript of Texas A&M Coach Mark Turgeon's comments at in his Interview in New York City where the team has traveled for the NIT Season Tip-Off:

TEXAS A&M HEAD COACH MARK TURGEON

KEVIN SWEENEY: We're now joined by Coach Mark Turgeon. Thanks for joining us today.

MARK TURGEON: Thank you. I am excited to finally be able to join you. It is a relief that the season has finally started.

Q. About that start, 2-0, congratulations!

MARK TURGEON: Yes, thank you. I've been lucky to be blessed with some talent, and all our players have a great work ethic are enjoy playing within our system. They come to practice every day willing to work, and I cannot say I have been disappointed with anyone, as we are winning as a team.

Q. How has Josh Carter helped bring this team to the level they are playing at this season?

MARK TURGEON: I have been pleased with Josh so far this season. His play has been strong thus far, both inside and outside. In order for us to be successful as a team, we are going to need him to step up and hit some perimeter shots for us, and so far he has done that for us. He's averaged what, 27 points a game, thats a solid number and we will need him to keep this up if we are to achieve our ultimate goal for the season.

Q. And what is this ultimate goal you speak of?

MARK TURGEON: You should know the answer to this question. This team is good enough to make it to the Championship, and we will do everything in our power to make it there. Our team has the depth and the talent, now we just got to put it all together.

Q. We all know about Joseph Jones and his knee injuries. Do you think that is effecting his play so far this season?

MARK TURGEON: Players struggle, no matter who you look at. Joe is just having a tough time with it right now. We all know what Joe can do when he is healthy, just give him some time to get his game legs back under him. Jones was one of the biggest reasons I was willing to make the jump to the team when I did. He has the potential to be a great player, as he has proven in the past.

Q. How have you felt about Sloan at the point so far this season?

MARK TURGEON: Donald has done a great job controlling the offense for us. He is poised, and he does not rush anything. He takes his time and waits for things to develop. His scoring will become more prominent in time, but for now his patience has impressed the coaching staff the most.

Q. Will your team with the NIT Season Tip-Off??

MARK TURGEON: We are a great team. Congrats to the other teams for making it here as well. But we know they are good teams as well, and if we dont play to our potential in any given game, we know that the consequences could be devastating. We are just going out and are going to play one game at a time.

KEVIN SWEENEY: Good luck, and hopefully we'll talk after a NIT Season Tip-Off Championship!!

Aggies Stumble, UW-Green Bay hands First Loss

For Immediate Release
November 21, 2007

http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2007/0130/ncw_i_borseth_275.jpg

This was supposed to be a day when the Texas A&M Aggies took one step closer to prominence. Instead, they suffered a major setback as they lost to mid-major surprise UW-Green Bay 88-80 in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

This game played close throughout, and the Aggies had a 37-36 lead at halftime. However, the issue plaguing the Aggies so far this season has been the defense, and it showed once again today, as the Pheonix from Green Bay shot 51% from the field. Joseph Jones would break out of his slump for 22 points, but it would be the poor shooting of Josh Carter that would prevent A&M from winning this game, who shot a lowly 2-10 for the game.

Key Performers

Texas A&M

Joseph Jones: 22 Points, 7 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Steals
Josh Carter: 12 Points, 3 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 3 Steals
DeAndre Jordan: 11 Points, 5 Rebounds, 25% FT

UW-Green Bay

Rahmon Fletcher: 20 Points, 11 Assists, 7-9 FG
Tevah Morris: 17 Points, 15 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Steals
Terry Evans: 16 Points, 3 Rebounds, 3 Assists

The Aggies will next play on Friday, as they will take on the Washington Huskies in the Third Place game in the NIT Season Tip-Off. Washington was forced out the Championship game after losing by one point in a thriller to the Syracuse Orange. They are lead by Jon Brockman (19.5 PPG, 13.3 RPG), Ryan Appleby (15.8 PPG, 3.3 APG, 3 Point Specialist), and Justin Dentmon (14.8 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 6.5 APG, 2.8 SPG).

A&M regains poise, Beat up on Huskies

For Immediate Release
November 23, 2007

http://images.sportsline.com/u/photos/basketball/college/img10488791.jpg

Although the Aggies would have liked to be playing for the championship of the NIT Season Tip-Off, they will certainly settle for a 3-1 start to their season as they handled the Washington Huskies with ease on way to a 93-81 victory in the third place game.

The Aggies were set to avenge a loss on Wednesday night, and came out of the gates fast against a worthy opponent in the Huskies. However, the defense would struggle for most of the first half and in yet another high scoring affair, the halftime score would be 53-51 Aggies. The second half would be much different though. The Aggies defense stepped up and they were finally able to dominant the boards. Joseph Jones stepped up his game, and the bench contributed immensely as the Aggies were able to build up a lead and hold it throughout the second half on route to the victory.

Key Performers

Texas A&M

DeAndre Jordan: 12 Points, 17 Rebounds, 6 Assists
Josh Carter: 18 Points, 3-6 3PT
Joseph Jones: 19 Points, 8 Rebounds, 3 Assists

Washington

Justin Dentmon: 14 Points, 10 Assists
Joel Smith: 15 Points, 2 Rebounds
Jon Brockman: 14 Points, 6 Rebounds

The Aggies (3-1) will next play on Wednesday, as they will take on the Alabama Crimson Tide (1-2) at Reed Arena. Alabama is a struggling team out of the SEC, who lost to Mercer and Troy in their first two contests, but were able to defeat Belmont in their last game. They are lead by Mykal Riley (19.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 2.3 SPG), Richard Hendrix (18.7 PPG, 8.7 RPG), and Alonzo Gee (13.6 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 2.3 SPG).
