Now that EA has bought the exclusive license again, I feel that 2ksports has nothing to lose by having 32 teams, 2 conferences with 4 divisions in each of those conferences. They won't **** off the NFL, and if they do, so what, what can the NFL do?
Here's what they should do.
Let's use the NFC East as an example:
2k could call it, the national league Eastern division
The Teams would be: The Philadelphia Birds
The Dallas Wranglers
The NY Mammoths
The Washington Indians.
The Philly Birds would have a big mobile QB(McNabb) with a strong arm, and a RB(Westbrook) that is as dangerous in the passing game as he is in the running game.
The Dallas Wranglers would also have a mobile QB(Romo). They would also have a 6'3 230 lbs WR(TO).
The NY mammoths would have a Giant RB(Jacobs) around 6'4" 265 lbs, and a WR(Burress) that stands 6'6 and weighs 230 lbs.
Now 2k obviously can't use NFL player names and trademarks, but they can use real cities, and have players with just numbers and not names, or fictional names. With total customization, the user will have the ability to changes the names, teams, uniforms and cities.
2k should also create drafts classes, based on actual college players. They obviously can't use their names or their school, but they can use their heights, weights and physical attributes.

You can't do that. It will violate "terms of use". You can't have anything remotely close. That's why all the names in 2K8 are nowhere near to the real ones. You can't even have similar names. Fully custumizable will never happen. PERIOD

Yes you can, you just can't have NFL teams and trademarks. You can't have a team called the Philadelphia Eagles or a player named Brian Westbrook, but you can use the city of philly and have a 5'8 running back that is a dangerous runner and receiver.
Look at NCAA football. They have the real schools, but none of the players are named, because if they were, they'd have to be paid, and that's against NCAA rules. 2k can do the same thing but without player or team names.

I don't want to recreate NFL teams. I just want more customization over the fictional ones-and create a stadium.

Then don't re-create NFL teams. That's the beauty of full customization, if you don't want to re-create NFL teams, than don't. Customize the game the way you want.

If you have full customization, than you can do that. I want to re-create the NFL, so if full customization is on All Pro 2k9, everybody can make themselves happy.

I honestly don't think 2K can move ahead without expanding the customization of the game. Think about it for a moment. They tried the basic game with the Legends, and I feel that it was a good start. Perhaps that was their goal - a good start. Now they really need to "wow" gamers with attention to every detail, including customization. If they just do a few updates to the current game, how many people will buy it? Sure, many of us would buy it again, but would the average gamer? Or the gamer that didn't buy 2K8? Without new NFL rosters, the average gamer is going to need something special to make him buy 2K9.
I know that 2K can do it. The question is will they?

You can sorta create your own 8-team league in All Pro Football, and play each team against each other. Just pick up a second controller. I did it and it works perfectly. You'll just have to switch the second controller to CPU side (middle) in the controller select screen when the game starts.
And I agree with GeezNu... the make your own league concept being the focus would be nice. I thought that was going to be part of the angle they were going to play up in 2k8... guess not.

No not true their was a soccer game called soccer evo(not sure on the name) but it's FULLY customizable and soccer fans found themselves making soccer teams, because EA owns the soccer license to.

I think the reason 2K had all the self imposed limits on customization and such is because they were still holding out hope that EA wouldn't get the exclusive NFL license again.
Think about it. If they had come out with a fully customizable game (or even slightly more customizable), with the ability to create a 32 player league, hundreds of custom players, maybe even uploadable logos, the NFL wouldn't be too happy, even if 2K didn't violate any copyright laws and the like. And if they got sued by the NFL over All-Pro 2K8, what would be the odds that they'd be able to acquire the NFL license for a posible NFL 2K10?
I feel like 2K made All-Pro partly as a way of showing the NFL that they can create a quality football title that gamers want, and as a way to maybe have their development team start working towards NFL 2K10.
But now that EA was given exclusivity once again, I'm hoping that 2K goes all out with All-Pro 2K9. Or I'd even be glad to hear if they skip this year and go for a longer development cycle and release it next calender year. If you think about it, it would likely result in a better, more polished game, and 2K could allocate less people to work on it, saving them some dough. There's no real reason that it needs to be a yearly game like other sports games.
Anyway, I still hope they continue the series, but add more customization to it.

I agree, 2k's effort in apf was a great start, with EA locking up the licence I would like to see APF go all out and make the sweetest football game ever! I'd like to see:
1) a franchise mode!
2) make the next one more realistic. the made up stadiums with all the interesting features like the big fire hydrant, molten lava, big fish bowl was fun for a while, but I love the NFL and If I can't have it on 2k then I hope they make APF more "real"
3) scrap the legends idea and make the players all "modern" with varying ages ranging from 23 to 40 then they spontaneously retire like the NFL 2k series. Throw in better looking cheerleaders and throw out the dancing grandmas that posed as cheerleaders and you got yourself some authenticity
4) If you want to try to customize your league to be like the NFL, then you should be able to do so. I made a few of my APF teams look pretty darn close to the real deal, but I'd like more realistic, serious looking logos to **** my teams out with....some of the ones on APF crack me up like the Lynx one...it's a slightly cartoonish, and looks more like a smiling kitty.
5) the "super bowl" should have more hoopla,
6) Would love a "Pro Bowl" feature
that's all i got for now

That's exactly why. They mentioned this in an interview with Operation Sports.
They have no excuses now though.

I completely customizable game would be a dream come true. And that's EXACTLY why we'll never see it happen. If APF 2K9 sells poorly (I'm guessing it will), then I wouldn't be surprised to see 2K stop producing a football game. Why would the suits running the company OK a line of games that fail to turn a big profit?

It doesnt matter that 2k doesnt have the license..It just means they have to make a great game this year..o make this game a top-seller..All they need to make more customization and add new features and thsi will be a hit...

I am a football fan...
The NFL has started growing on me in recent years...
although, with what I call "the pansy movement" and "spy gate" I am starting to become a little more disenchanted with the NFL...
Please... 2K, put in a Dynasty mode and the option to have generic players only...
combine this with the complete customization everyone is asking for...omg... best game ever

ummm i dunno ive played 500 games online against 450 different opponents and only had to quit 1 game because of some douche trying to cheese me to death
just like 2K8 its all in who you play and how you play...
like the 6 dudes in the APF lobby arent gonna exploit you to death... lol get real
at least in madden you can make a user pick here and there... but in 2k by the 15th time i chuck a bomb on you you'll be better off to just quit...
that flopping on the ground in ps3 is a real treat too...
talk about broken lmao
2k needs to clean up the gameplay, step up the testing and then add better plays/books before they worry about teams but the full customization sounds dope
but dont hate madden just to be a 2k nutrider... it makes APF look like an atari game

I think both games failed this year in terms of quality, but for different reasons. It's funny to hear the defenses for Madden '08 and the defenses for APF 2K8.
Madden '08 is a just a broken programming mess, with graphics that are far below their two previous versions '06 and '07. Look at all the time they spent on patches! LOL. If a game is programmed well, it won't need that much attention to making patches. I find it absolutely ridiculous that a person can ignore the laundry list of programming glitches and weak graphics that took a major step backwards, but still consider this game quality. I realize quality is subjective, but sometimes a duck is a duck...
APF 2K8 is a nightmare of poor conceptual design, and the results of the fear of losing out on a license that they never truly had a chance at anyway. They were so afraid of giving us more customization options because they didn't want to upset the NFL (See Operation Sports story). Well how'd that work out for ya 2K? Your game was a massive commercial failure AND you're not getting the license.
Video games just ain't what they used to be. The people making decisions in this era just don't seem to have good judgment anymore. I remember when Madden was excellent back in the Genesis days, I loved Madden for 3DO, I had a ball with Madden 64 (it didn't have an NFL license) and the PS1 Madden's Pre-2000 were masterpieces and were actually serious sims for their time. The presentation in Madden '97 for PS1 was unbelievable.
I remember a time when 2K Sports knew what made a football game great. To me, 2K8 is a departure from that as much of what they did with the game is just puzzling.

IMO Madden is doomed, it will never be a good game. EA and the NFL see all the dollar signs from the potential profits from all the soccer moms who are going to by this for there kids that like football, simply because they see the NFL logo on it. Can you blame them, they're not hardcore like us, and aren't going to see the all the gameplay flaws, that are in Madden, and how superior the game play is in APF.
APF 2k8 was a commercial failure, because of the concept/design, and because of the lack of advertising. There's no depth or replay value in the game. There's no franchise mode, no career mode, it was merely a head to head kind of game. The good news is, the game play and realism of APF 2k8 IMO was amazing. True, there were some exploits(what game doesn't have exploits), but compared to Madden's exploits, these were barely noticeable. 2k sports has the capabilities to make a great football game. If they just used 2k5's format, polished 2k8's graphics, added 4 or 5 draft classes based on actual college players, and gave us full customization, they'll make the greatest football game to date.

Madden has modes that don't work properly( which is technically false advertising). They don't function the way there supposed to this day.
I've gotten user picks in APF 2k8, there's a true pocket in 2k8. You can't drop back 20 yards and throw the ball accurately across the field like you can in Madden. Madden is crap, when you have people complaining to the Better Business Bureau, and threating to file class action suits, your game clearly has some issues.

I think 2k5 is better than both Madden and APF 2k8. If 2k9 is more like 2k5 and actually has a franchise mode and fictional league with 32 teams and full customization I think it will be the best game to date. If I wasn't playing 2k8 online there really is no incentive to play it as the offline mode is too thin to really enjoy. Offline is practice for the online mode.
