tough loss. At least your know your team has the comeback mentality in them. Good luck against Iowa, and hopefully you won't have a cold start against them or it will be ugly quickly.

MIDNIGHT MADNESS 2008

Last night at Alico Arena the mens and womens basketball season got kicked off. The Midnight Madness was a real sucess. The night started off with the lady eagles hitting the floor first. This game was a great one to watch. It came down to the wire with the Blue team pulling it off 85-83. Leading the blue team was Senior Amanda Kroft (Thornville,Oh.) with 25 points and 12 assist. The white team was lead by Freshman stand out Julie Stump (Tampa,Fl.) with 30 points and 14 rebounds.

Next it was the mens turn. Coach Craig divided his squad into two teams Fresh and Soph on one team and Jr and Sr on the other. Coach Craig coached the underclassmen while Coaches Lane and Glass coached the upperclassmen. This game went back and forth. But the underclassmen came out on top 90-85. The underclassmen were lead by Freshman Justin Stokes (Jacksonville,Fla) with 28 points 12 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. The uppercalssmen were lead by Casey Pond (Gurnee,Ill) with 25 points and 16 assist.

Next was the battle of the sexes 3 point shootout. It came down to senior Jessica Mckenzie (Dresden,OH) and Delvin Franklin (Houston,Tex). When the smoke cleared Jessica Mckenzie came out on top. She shot 100%. Delvin shot 90%.

Next was the high flying dunk contest. With the winner Reed Baker (Naples,Fla) he is the Michigan transfer. He did a blind folded between the legs dunk to bring home the crown.

Coach Craig had these comments after the event. "Man was that fun or what? All and all I think it was a very sucessful night. It would have been better if Delvin would have beat Jessica. But she is a great shooter. She will be hard to beat this season."

Jessica Mckenzie had this to say. " I can't help but feel bad for Delvin he shot well. But I just could not miss. I hope that is a sign on how my season will be this year."

Casey Pond had these comments." Its the start of my last season here at FGCU. Its been a up and down time here. But Coaches Craig,Lane and Glass are great. They are the hardest nosed coaches I have ever played for. Coach Craig has drilled into our heads that we are way better than last years record shows. This year we will be the Atlantic Sun shockers."

RECRUITMENT NEWS

Coach Mark Craig has hit the recruitment trail early this season. He has been in contact with a 5-10 point guard named Reggie Chambers. Here is some stats on Reggie.
Chambers helped lead Monsignor Pace the 4A state championships and a 22-9 record as a senior. Chambers was named third team All-Dade County by the Miami Herald after averaging 8.1 points per game and 7.2 assists per game where he played for coach Mark Leiberman.Chambers transferred to Pace prior to his senior season. As a junior, he averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 assists per game at West High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Chambers was selected as a 2007 Salt Lake Tribune 4A Second Team All-State selection and named third team All-State by the Deseret Morning News as well. Chambers was also named best playmaker at the Five-Star Basketball Camp in the Florida State Session NBA division.

Coach Craig had this to say after returning from a visit with Reggie Chambers. "Reggie is a great player. I have had a chance to see a few of his games. In the State championship game he was a leader. He did not get one bit shook up. He is a big reason his team went 22-9 this season. Lets just hope we can land this big fish. Florida University is really after this kid as well. I guess its all up to Reggie on were he wants to go to school at. Lets just hope he comes to us."

We will keep you informed on Reggie as soon as we hear any news.

FGCU EAGLES START SEASON OFF WITH A WIN!!

Daytona Beach, Fla. Last night the FGCU Eagles came to town to take on a strong Bethune-Cookman team. At the tip Bethune took off on a 7-0 run. This made Coach Craig use a timeout. Coach Craig was very verbal in the huddle during the time out. After the time out FGCU responded with a run of their own lead by back to back threes from Delvin Franklin (Houston ,Tex). At half time the score was 30 to 25 with Bethune holding the lead. Bethune was lead by solid post play the first half. Coach Craig had this to say as the headed to the locker room. "They are kicking our butts on the boards! If we box out we will be ok. If not we are going to lose. They feed in to their 7" post player and we just watch him score. We don't even try to contest his shot. This will all change in the second half."

FGCU HALFTIME STATS

#20 Jr. Delvin Franklin 15 points 6 assist 3 for 3 from the three point line

#22 Fr. Ed Rolax 10 points 5 rebounds 82% from the charity stripe.

FGCU started the second half with a bang. They went on a 15-0 run to start off. Leading the run was the Michigan transfer Reed Baker (Naples, Fla). He had two quick steals and went coast to coast for a dunk and a easy layup. He had 8 points in the run. The second half was a different story for Bethune's post player. The FGCU deffense doubled down on him so he could not get the ball. This set Bethune out of their game. With the final horn sounding FGCU wins 60 to 50. Here is Coach Craigs comments after the game." Its feels great to win your first game. But this win was not pretty. If we play the first half as well as we did the second we win this game easy. At half time I had to lose my cool a little. Me and my assistant's layed down a challenge for the second half and they responded. Reed Baker was a spark off the bench that we needed."

FGCU FINAL STATS

#20 Jr. Delvin Franklin 25 points 12 assist 80% from beyond the arc.

#22 Fr. Ed Rolax 20 points 14 rebounds 85% from the charity stripe.

#3 So. Reed Baker 15 points 10 steals 100% from the charity stripe.

FGCU START SEASON 2-0 WITH HOME WIN

Fort Meyers Fla. Last night at Alico arena FGCU hosted Drexel. FGCU dominated this game from the opening tip. The Guard play of Reed Baker (Naples,Fla) and Delvin Franklin (Houston,Tex) was to much for Drexel in the first half. Baker had three quick steals and found a wide open Franklin that hit three three pointers in a row. FGCU also stepped up on the D. Mbainai Narmaye (Chad,Africa) was a monster inside with 5 first half blocks. This gave FGCU the lead 35-20 going into the locker room at half time. Coach Craig had this to say about the first half." We are starting off good. Lets hope we can keep this up in the second half. If Mbainai keeps throwing his weight around inside we will be fine. The guards are doing great finding the open cutters in or Princeton offense. Lets just hope we can keep this intensity in the second half."

FGCU FIRST HALF STATS

#3 So. Reed Baker 10 points 7 assist.

#20 Jr. Delvin Franklin 15 points 3 for 3 from beyond the arch.

#31 Sr. Mbainai Narbaye 10 points 10 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.

The second half started just like the first half. FGCU never looked back. Narmaye became the senior leader and took this team on his shoulders. He could not be stopped inside. He was just way to strong for Drexel. Off the bench senior Rob Quaintance (Glendale,Ariz) was a big spark. He was a leader while Franklin was on the bench. He had 10 points off the bench. FGCU wins this on big. 80-60. Here is Coach Craig's comments." See what we can do if we put two halves together. I am very pleased on how we played tonight. Our inside play was unstoppable. Our seniors really stepped up. We have a big test with Big Ten power house Iowa next. This win will be a big boost going into that game."

FGCU FINAL STATS

#31 Sr. Mbainai Narbaye 25 points 15 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

#3 So. Reed Baker 20 points 15 assist.
