View Full Version : Attemp for help #2 - Bad Game? Bad Controller? Bad Console?

I purchased "Major League Baseball 2K8" the day it came out & have been having an issue with the game recognizing my exact controller movements resulting in "meat" pitches galore while pitching & my batter not taking his backstep while batting. Below is an optimal pitching sequence you are trying to achieve:
1st Step: Moving the right stick in the 1st direction of a specific pitch to begin the pitching process. The meter begins to expand.
2nd Step: Moving the right stick in a motion that copies the pitches 2nd movement which changes the direction of the movement to collapsing.
3rd Final Release: Releasing the stick trying to land exactly on the "green release zone" for an optimal pitch.
------------------
Below is what is happing when I am playing in my owm game.
1st Step: Moving the right stick in the 1st direction of a specific pitch to begin the pitching process. The meter begins to grow.
2nd Step: Moving the right stick in a motion that copies the pitches 2nd movement which changes the direction of the movement to collapsing.
***issue - when attemping to move my stick in the second direction the game isnt recognizing it during play so what happens is the meter expands all the way even if I only want to throw at half "effectiveness".
3rd Final Release: Releasing the stick to land exactly on the "green release zone" for an optimal pitch.
***Also after the pitch, you can view your exact controller movements on your "Last Pitch" to the left of your pitcher. Now here it isnt recognizing my first stick movement. Example - throwing a changup you need to 1st) press up on the stick to begin the pitch, 2nd) you move you stick opposite pulling toward you, & 3rd) you let go trying to land exactly on the "green release zone". On mine it isnt recognizing my first movement at all (see picture). In the picture I actually started the pitch by pressing up but it does not show myself doing it at all. It just shows pulling toward me.

-------------------
Am I looking at a bad game, controller, or a bad XBOX system that is unable to recognize my controller. Any ideas would be great. I understand what I wrote may be a bit hard to visualize not seeing it for yourself. Will be happy to elaborate on any specifics.
I have tried everything to diagnose myself by performing the following:
1) Deleteing the game & files from my hard drive memory by using my XBOX console / System(Tab)
2) I have tried three different controllers all with the same outcome
3) I have a friend that came over whom also bought game & it does not happen at his place but does happen to him on my system (hmmm?)

It's the game, it is happening to everyone especially with pitchers out of the stretch. I hope it will be fixed when the patch come out. To get by it(takes some practice) you have to make your first movement twice. SO for a change up you press up once and wait for it to expand a little and then hit up again and the meter will contract and you can finish it of by pressing down. I have to practice everytime it starts to happen but it works. Huge bug.

it is not your Xbox or controller so dont spend money trying to send them in or anything, i can link you to alot of post of people having the exact same problem. I thought it was something with all my wireless devices in my house so i moved them all just to find out it was the game.

Thanks "buckydmb" for the quick responses. Im a bit confused though the first you said it was the game & the second you said it wasnt. You also said you had a link or something of others having the same issue?

it's the game. i know how to pitch fine, it's not hard, but just today i was pitching a exhibition game and none of my pitches were working. it was impossible to throw anything other than a meatball. basically it wouldn't react to the release of the pitch.

Thanks to the both of you for your responses I will exchange it today for the same. Hopefully the new one will work fine.

It's odd that I haven't had that problem yet with my game, and I've used two different controllers so far playing the game (roommate took my first one to play Devil May Cry 4).

Yea I experience this too. I thought it was part of the game honestly where the pitcher's arm got a little tired or something so he couldn't do half effectiveness pitches. (but I guess that really wouldn't make sense lol)
Anyways yea...I have noticed it where the first few pitches you could do ANY effectiveness whether it be a real small circle or big circle (in between 2 white circles). Then, after about 3-4 pitches you can't do small effectiveness anymore and HAVE to get the pitch circle big with effectiveness.
Can anyone confirm that this is an actual problem, or "working as intended"?
Blue? Thoughts?

The Batter's Eye still works - tho' unlike last year you need to keep White Dot active right thru pitch release - tougher to use, but probably better than the "Magic Guess Reveal" of last year's
-- Thats not how its supposed to work. Its impossible to hold that L3 button down thru release and have any kinda control over anything else. Besides the eye dissappears when the wind up starts!
-- Then the usual lag and stutterin video
-- How about the runner standing on 3rd when theres a base hit up the middle.
-- The unusually high % of outfield collisions.
-- Some clown named Mitch Moran coachin the yankees and having the announcers refer to him as Joe Girardi....... that ons got me stumped.

You know, this has happened to me during game play so I know exactly the problem you are referring to. But I have noticed a common theme. I usually have just brought in a new picture or gotten into a jam. I am pretty convinced this is a feature of the game, and a very cool one at that, but please let me know if this happens in a regular situation. I would argue that the biggest thing we failed to do was make a better manual to announce stuff like this. But that'll be part of what I talked about for future editions.

I would argue with you by saying that the biggest thing you failed to do was beta test the game more thoroughly... it's become apparent to me (and many others) that the game just doesn't seem like it's "finished".
And no patch in the world is going to take care of all the issues that need to be addressed in "your" game...
Bad information in the instruction manual should be the least of your worries.

I HAD this problem of the pitches not being recognized...either the 1st or 2nd portion of it. I changed the way I held the controller...using my index finger and thumb to control the gesture with the right stick and I no longer have the problem.

Negative, I'd love to have a conversation with you about what it is that wasn't tested throughly. Please PM me if you wish with specifics as opposed to this over-arching claim. Also, sarcasm will not help your case. I am deleting your post.
Cool Hand, a lot of the problem was the learning curve. People were on here the day after it came out saying the pitching was too difficult, etc. We are trying to release a game that's a challenge and that will take some time to master. I hope people will see and understand that.

I also hope they see and understand the genius behind this type of pitching. If this isn't the standard for baseball games from here on out then I think companies are making a mistake.

What system are you playing on. I have seen exactly 1 outfield collision in about 80-100 games played. If you don't call the other guy off, outfielders will collide. That is user error. I have yet to see the computer outfielders collide at all.
Runner standing on third? Have not experienced that either.
I have not experienced the pitching issue you all are talking about either (or at least have not noticed it). Do you have third party controllers plugged in such as guitars or drums?

There wasn't an ounce of sarcasm in my post... it was an honest post from a former 2K Sports loyalist. As history would suggest, nine times out of ten, games get better from year to year... such is not the case with the newest 2K Sports MLB game. IT almost seems like 2K7 took a step forward, and 2K8 took two steps back.
And nice way to run a forum... deleting posts from people who are genuninely upset that they dropped $60 of hard earned money down on (an otherwise uncomplete) game? That's classy.
If only you monitored the beta testing this closely, there probably wouldn't be so many people screaming bloody murder over the lack of polish that's found in MLB 2K8.
Eh, do whatever you want to do in the attempts of pulling the wool over everyone's eyes... I won't be fooled by your company any time in the future.
I'd sooner not play a baseball game at all, than play another "incomplete" baseball game.

I hope people will see and understand that.It definitely happens when pitchers aren't in jams. My franchise is basiacally unplayable because of all the pitchers that the Brewers have that pitch solely out of the stretch(Mota,Turnbow, torres, gagne) I cant go a game without it happening, even in blowouts it's still happening. And the best case to prove it is that if you make the first gesture twice really fast it will recognize it(which is very very hard to do)

Not talking about you, in particular, pulling the wool over people's eyes. I was referring to the company, in general...
I feel that the entire game should have been beta tested more thoroughly... I'd be willing to bet that there would be thousands of less complaints about the game being "buggy" had 2K Sports decided to give it another week or two's worth of polish.

You absolutely do. I find it ponderous that you choose to pick fights with admins and other people thus taking away from this place for other people when you chose to no longer care about or play this game. Just kind of seems like you are here for the wrong reasons is all.

Pick fights? Please.
If anything, my "voiced" displeasure over the game has been quite civil, especially when compared to all of the other 1,000+ threads started by children who don't have a clue in life to begin with.
C'mon now... I spent my $60 on this game just like everyone else... I have every right in the world to voice my thoughts and opinions on the game.
I tried everything under the sun to like this game... I changed sliders around, and I even had a lot of optimism for the game, before it was even released. I even talked a few of my friends into thinking that this would be THE MLB game to own this year.
Sadly, I was wrong, and my friends will probably no longer take my game recommendations seriously anymore.

Not really, but at least make it look like a step forward for crying out loud... I mean seriously, there were errors in the instruction manual for the game. That doesn't seem to make sense to me, when a company wants to come off as looking like an innovator.
Now that this supposed patch is being released, it seems like a whole lot of scrambling on 2K Sports' behalf just to cover the obvious mistakes that were made on the premature release of this game.

You are one of those people who really have no idea what "Freedom of Speech" granted you in the Constitution of The United States of America really means.
The people who run this forum have the right to delete anything they want to. They also have the right to (if they have the capability) ban you down to the IP level from posting here.
You have protected speech in as far as the government is not allowed to silence you.
It is also illegal to run into a movie theater and yell fire if there is not one.
Freedom of speech is not nearly as far reaching as people who like to claim it like to think.
You are just what your name says you are. You are one of those people who probably complain at every turn about every little thing. You hate E-Bay too. Millions use it and love it but it just isn't good enough for you.

I just don't understand if you've made the decision to get rid of the game why would you even care anymore? Are you saying you really haven't decided to get rid of it? Sorry if I came off a little harsh but there's so much negativity in this forum it's tough to stomach sometimes. Your moniker probably didn't help. Perhaps your best solution in the future would be to wait for a demo or rent a game before you decide to drop $60 on it because it seems like the money is a big deal. I bought it right away and love the offline more than I have any baseball game in a long time. The $60 doesn't bother me since they are going to put a patch out to fix the game.

Portlander is correct for those of you reading this post. However, I have let you continue to post here on this subject because I don't find what you're saying inflamatory nor am I taking the company's "stance" of "pulling the wool". It's an interesting discussion, but one that you need to back with facts about what needed to be beta tested. Anyway, if we don't get that, let's just close this matter. Thanks.

You're not helping with the pitching problem at all. With Carlos Silva and Batista for me it happens EVERY time they go to the stretch. I'm up 5-1, and just allowed a runner, and it happened. It has NOTHING to do with stress or whatever. It's a major bug.

Yupp first thing i did when i got the patch was test...2nd inning i brought Mota in with no runners on and it happens. :thumbsdow I just don't get it...I might try and go to gamestop to see if they'll let me trade it for a different copy or at least try a used copy to see if theres does it.

heres a video i made with the problem. Note it's the second inning, Turnbow is not tired and no one is on base. It happens every pitch(no matter what inning or situation) with him and most of my other relievers. And yes i know how to pitch.
