CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- In the end, Roy Williams knew it was time to return to his roots, to the storied program in powder blue where he learned his craft as an assistant at his beloved alma mater.

Roy Williams was introduced as the new coach of the UNC tarheels today before a standing room only crowd on the campus of the Univeristy of North Carolina.

Williams has been asked to lead a team of Legends to another crack at an NCAA title.

Williams fought back tears as Coach Dean Smith handed over the keys to a long storied and respected program. " I'am extremly excited at the prospect of being trusted with such an elite program, at the best university in the country" "We Will Win a Title I gauruntee it."

Williams has a huge task at hand. Although his roster is packed with stars, this team will take on other legendary players week after week in their quest for greatness.

STORRS, Conn. (AP)—Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun got a response from his team that he had hoped to avoid seeing.

The Huskies (2-1) got an eyeful of North Carolina's Michael Jordan on Monday. Jordan opened his freshman campaign with 37 points against a relentless UCONN lineup.

UConn lost 95-90 at home, stumbling along the way with 7 turnovers. The Huskies coaching staff was furrious as Connecticut failed to find an answer for Jordan and Rasheed Wallace. Calhoun said he would “show his team just how bad they were during practice next week.”

Coach Roy Williams looked very relaxed in his coaching debut. Coach Williams recounted his teams demeanor before tip off. " I thought the guys had an excellent week of practice, we studied film on Ray Allen, If we could hold him below his average we felt like we would be victorious."
Allen was held to a season low 11 points. UCONN's Cliff Robinson led his team with 26 points and 7 rebounds.

UNC takes on (1-0) Jacksonville on Sunday. Jacksonville is a formidable opponent even though they play in a mid major conference their team has some major players. They are led by 7'3 center Artis Gilmore and their flashy high rising PG Dee Brown.

Gilmore is an intimidating giant in the low post. His ability to vaccum rebounds off the rim and his stellar shot blocking makes him one of the best Centers in the country, Artis can change the flow of the game by himself.

Historical player spotlight from Wikipedia.

Artis Gilmore (born September 21, 1949, in Chipley, Florida) is a former professional basketball player in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and National Basketball Association (NBA). Nicknamed "The A-Train" for his unprententious but dominating style of play, the durable 7 ft 2 in (2.18 m) Gilmore once played in 670 consecutive games.

He played college basketball at Gardner-Webb Junior College and Jacksonville University, leading the Dolphins to the NCAA title game in 1970. During the two years Gilmore played NCAA basketball at Jacksonville, he became one of the few college players ever to average at least 20 points and 20 rebounds over a career. He led the NCAA in rebounding both years, and his career average of 22.7 rebounds per game is still the highest in NCAA Division I history.

He began his professional career with the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association and played there for the Louisville team until the league folded in 1976. As a rookie in 1972, Gilmore had the rare distinction of being selected both the league Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year. Gilmore led the ABA four times in rebounding average, twice in both field goal percentage and blocks per game, and once in personal fouls. He was named to the All-ABA First team five straight seasons, and was named to the ABA's All-Defense team four times. He played in the ABA All-Star Game all five years he played in the ABA, and was named the game's MVP in 1974. In 1975, he led Kentucky to the ABA championship and was named the Playoffs MVP. During his ABA career, Gilmore established ABA records for career field goal percentage (0.557), career blocked shots (750), blocked shots in a season (287 in the 1973-74 season), and rebounds in a game (40).

Gilmore was chosen with the 1st overall pick in the 1976 ABA dispersal draft by the Chicago Bulls. He played for Chicago through the 1982 season (rejoined the team for part of the 1988 season, after which he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs, where he played through the 1987 season. He ended his NBA career with the Boston Celtics in 1988. Gilmore played in a total of six NBA All-Star Games. He led the NBA in field goal percentage in four consecutive seasons, including a career best .670 during the 1980-81 season — the third highest percentage in NBA history. Gilmore remains the NBA's career leader in field goal percentage (minimum 2000 shots made) with a 59.9 percentage. Gilmore also led the NBA in turnovers once (during the 1977-78 season).

He then played the 1988-1989 season with Arimo Bologna of the Italian league, where he averaged 12.3 points and 11.0 rebounds and made the European All-Star Team.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Michael Jordan turned in another stellar performance last night agianst the Jacksonville University Dolphins. Jordan repeatedly sliced and diced defenders all night. The Tar Heels did more than enough to justify being ranked 2nd in the Nation behind the Kansas Jayhawks.

Jordan had 34 points to continue his early-season scoring binge. Rasheed Wallace added 15 points for the Tar Heels (2-0, 0-0 ACC),
When asked about his tremendous scoring ability, Jordan replied "I think that is the result of hardwork and some tough games with my brothers back in Wilmington," Brothers or no brothers Jordan can definately score.

Coleman Hailed as Campus Hero!

In a closely contested game between #2 North Carolina (2-1) and #9 Syracuse University (5-1), the visiting Orangemen won 97-96. Sophmore Power Forward Derick Coleman hit a shot at the buzzer giving Syracuse a 1 point win. UNC had been riding the hot hand of freshman Michael Jordan whose 18 ft jumper with six seconds remaining appeared to give the Tarheels their third straight victory.

Syracuse coach Jim Boehiem called an immediate timeout to call one last play. Guarrd Dave Bing recieved the inbound pass, Bing fired a long baseball pass to an open Coleman. Coleman after catching the pass pivoted and fired the ball with 1 tick left on the clock, swish.... and with that the Syracuse Orangemen were victorious.
