Murphy’s Heroics Lift NSU to 72-69 Win over Richmond in Season Opener
Murphy’s Heroics Lift NSU to 72-69 Win over Richmond in Season Opener
Tony Murphy Knocked Down Seven 3-Pointers En Route to 29 points
RICHMOND, Va. – Senior guard Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) scored a game-high 29 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with two-tenths of a second left, to lift Norfolk State to a 72-69 win over Richmond in the Spartans’ season opener on Saturday night at the Robins Center.
The Spartans (1-0) outscored the Spiders (1-2) 16-2 over the final 4 minutes, 41 seconds to rally from a double-digit deficit and earn their first win in a season-opener since 1998-99. Murphy scored NSU’s final seven points, all coming in the final 75 seconds.
Murphy was 7-of-13 from 3-point range as the Spartans shot 44 percent (11-of-25) from behind the arc. The seven 3-pointers ties a single-game school record, which Murphy already shared with Ralph Tally. Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) added 19 points, 15 in the first half.
Richmond, which led the entire second half before Murphy’s shot at the horn, took a 67-56 lead on two free throws by Oumar Sylla with 4:41 left. But the Spartans clamped down on defense after that, holding UR to 1-of-6 shooting and forcing four turnovers the rest of the way.
Larry Vickers (Virginia Beach, Va.), who pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds, scored the next four points to get NSU within seven. Then, Murphy cut the deficit to four with his sixth 3-pointer of the night.
A Vickers steal ignited a fast-break opportunity for Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.), whose layup brought NSU within two. David Gonzalvez extended the Spiders’ lead to four at 69-65 with 1:41 remaining.
But Murphy would not be denied. His steal and layup brought NSU within two with 1:14 left. UR missed two shots at the other end, one thanks to a block by Vickers, and Murphy converted another layup to force the first tie of the second half.
Another turnover by Gonzalvez, this one on a backcourt violation, set the stage for Murphy’s final shot.
After shooting 47 percent in the first half, the hosts were limited to 32 percent accuracy in the final 20 minutes. Dan Geriot had 21 points and 15 rebounds for UR. Gonzalvez had 15 points and Sylla 10.
Murphy had three of NSU’s eight steals. Vickers had two and also blocked two shots. Deloach had nine points and a career-high seven rebounds.

Murphy hit a foul line jumper and Rashid Cann (Greensboro, N.C.) a 3-pointer to give the Spartans the early 5-0 lead. But the Lancers scored the next 13 points over the ensuing four minutes to take a lead they would not relinquish.
NSU got within two points on three occasions in the second half. Murphy hit back-to-back 3-pointers, the second to begin a four-point play, to bring NSU within 45-43 with 12:53 remaining. The teams traded baskets the next two times down the floor, with Larry Vickers (Virginia Beach, Va.) scoring the next two field goals for the Spartans on slam dunks.
But Giles was fouled on a 3-point attempt after the second Vickers dunk, and made all three free throws to give Longwood a 52-47 lead. The Lancers led by at least that many the rest of the game.

Nebraska (3-0), which led 32-25 at halftime, outscored the Spartans (1-3) 51-23 in the second half. The Huskers, who entered the game allowing 47.5 points per game in their first two contests, shot 50.9 percent and held NSU to 26.8 percent accuracy from the floor.
Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) led NSU with 12 points. Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) had nine points and eight rebounds, but was limited to 3-of-15 shooting from the floor.

*I'm gonna be doing a different thing. I'm gonna put how I thought of the game overall) here it is.
-I thought that I was shooting the ball well. Espeecially in the 1st Half. But I just died in the 2nd. I couldn't make nothing. I once got a wide open layup and I missed it! I know the game misses some eays layups but wide open in transition? Impossible. I got creamed cause of all the miss shots and Nebraska took it to the advantage and kicked my butt.

NSU Cuts 22-Point Deficit to 3, But Runs Out of Time
PRAIRIE VIEW, Tex. — Freddie Edo and Jonathan Dixon combined for 32 points off the Prairie View A&M bench, and the host Panthers subdued Norfolk State’s second-half rally to take a 76-71 victory on Monday night at the William Nicks Building.
Edo led the Panthers (2-3) with 19 points while Dixon added 13. The pair also combined for seven rebounds and seven steals to send the Spartans (1-4) to their fourth straight loss.

The Panthers led by as many as 22 points in the second half and still maintained a 19-point cushion with seven minutes remaining. But Deloach scored all 16 of his second-half points in the final 7:31 of the period. Deloach also hit a career-high three 3-point field goals, the last of which brought NSU within 74-71 with 37 seconds remaining in the game.

Spartans Look to Break 4-Game Losing Streak
NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men’s basketball team opens Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play by hosting North Carolina A&T in the Spartans’ home opener on Saturday at Echols Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and follows the NSU-N.C. A&T women’s game.
NSU (1-4) comes into the game on a four-game losing streak after a 76-71 defeat Monday at Prairie View A&M. The Aggies, meanwhile, are 4-3 after a 93-59 loss at No. 12 Tennessee on Tuesday.
The Spartans lead the all-time series with N.C. A&T 16-15, but the Aggies won all three meetings last season. N.C. A&T swept the regular-season series, which included a 104-99 double overtime win at Echols Hall in February, then topped NSU 81-66 in the MEAC Tournament quarterfinals in March.

Deloach's Career Game Lifts NSU Over Aggies

Junior Scores Game-High 24 Points, 22 in 2nd Half
NORFOLK, Va. — Junior Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) scored 22 of his career-high 24 points in the second half to lead host Norfolk State to an 82-76 win over North Carolina A&T in the MEAC opener for both on Saturday evening at Echols Hall.
Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) added 20 points and Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.)16 for the Spartans (2-4, 1-0 MEAC) who broke their four-game losing streak in their first home game of the season.
Deloach scored 10 straight Spartan points in a key second-half spurt. After a Steven Rush jumper put the Aggies ahead 62-59 with 9:48 left, Deloach responded with a three-point play to tie the game. Rush followed with two free throws to put A&T back ahead 64-62, but Deloach answered with a layup and his only 3-pointer of the night to give NSU the lead for good at 67-64 with 6:13 remaining.
The Aggies (4-4, 0-1) got within two, 78-76, on a 3-pointer by Austin Ewing with five seconds left. But Murphy hit two free throws at the other end to seal the win.
The Spartans led by as many as seven in the first half, 32-25, after a Murphy jumper with 3:06 remaining. But the Aggies got within 37-36 at halftime on a dunk by Thomas Coleman.
There were three lead changes in the first 10 minutes of the second half before Deloach’s spark off the bench carried NSU to victory.
The Spartans shot 50 percent from the floor (28-of-56), 52 in the second half. NSU scored 24 points off 23 A&T turnovers. Larry Vickers (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the Spartans on the boards with 10, and he also had three blocks.
Rush had 16 points but was held to 4-of-13 shooting. He had 35 points and made nine 3-pointers in the teams’ last meeting at Echols Hall in February. Coleman had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Jason Wills added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Aggies, who outrebounded NSU 41-28. The Aggies, though, shot just 41 percent (24-of-59) from the floor, 19 percent (3-of-16) from 3-point range.

Murphy Scores 26 in His Return to New Jersey
HACKENSACK, N.J. — Sean Baptiste scored a team-high 23 points, and Manny Ubilla scored 19 points and led a first-half 3-point shooting barrage as Fairleigh Dickinson defeated Norfolk State 80-64 on Monday night at Stratis Arena.
Ubilla hit all four of his 3-pointers in the first half for the Knights (2-5), who were 8-of-18 (44 percent) from behind the arc in taking a 43-12 halftime lead. The Spartans (2-5) shot just 25 percent (6-of-24) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, while FDU shot 52 percent (16-of-31).
A Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) jumper cut the Knights’ lead to 8-4 five minutes into the game. But FDU went on a 15-0 run to blow the game open and take a 23-4 lead. Ubilla hit two treys in the spurt, and Eric Hazard hit one. Jordan Stasyszyn capped the first-half binge with a 3-pointer of his own with six seconds left before the half, giving FDU its largest lead of the period, 43-12.
The Spartans played much better in the second half, shooting 53 percent (20-of-38) while holding FDU to 32 percent (6-of-19). NSU got as close as 11 points, 70-59, on a 3-pointer by New Jersey native Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) with 2:27 left. But FDU went 10-of-10 from the foul line down the stretch, with Ubilla and Baptiste both going 4-of-4.
Murphy, playing about 10 minutes from his childhood home, scored a game-high 26 points, all in the second half. It was his fourth 20-point game of the season. Murphy was 9-of-22 from the floor, 9-of-17 in the second half, and made 6-of-7 from the free throw line. He also tied for team-high honors with six rebounds.
Deloach had 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and Larry Vickers (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 10 points and six rebounds for the Spartans. Joseph Dorsett-Jeffreys (Bronx, N.Y.) had a career-high six boards of his own of the bench.
John Galvin added nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds for FDU, which outscored NSU 26-10 from the free throw line. The Knights made 23-of-34 from the charity stripe in the second half.

Tough start to the season so far but that is expected for a small school. I'm sure you'll do well in conference play. Good luck against AFA.

Anderson, Air Force Pull Away from Spartans, 65-53

Corey Lyons scored 19 points to pace the Spartans
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Tim Anderson scored 19 points to lead four Air Force players in double figures, and the host Falcons beat Norfolk State for the second straight year, 65-53, on Thursday night at Clune Arena.
One year to the date after topping the Spartans 70-47 in their first-ever meeting, the Falcons (7-4), NIT semifinalists in 2007, shot 68 percent from the floor (13-of-19) in the second half to pull away from NSU (2-6).
Neither team led by more than five points in a low-scoring first half. Air Force held a 20-17 halftime lead despite shooting just 33 percent (7-of-21) from the floor and 11 percent (1-of-9) from 3-point range. The Spartans shot just 26 percent (7-of-27) from the floor, 14 percent (2-of-14) from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes. But they stayed close behind seven points from Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) and by outrebounding the Falcons 21-14.
Air Force slowly stretched its lead by making its first seven field goals in the second half, capped by an Evan Washington 3-pointer that gave the Falcons their first double-digit advantage, 36-24, with 13:54 left. The Spartans cut their deficit back into double figures thanks to 3-pointers by Raphael Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) and Jeremy Banks (Elizabeth City, N.C.).
But Air Force kept NSU at bay by making its free throws. The Falcons shot a sizzling 91 percent (20-of-22) from the foul line, 94 percent (15-of-16) in the second half. Anderson was 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. NSU attempted just four free throws during the game, making two.
Anwar Johnson added 12 points, Washington 11 and Keith Maren 10 for Air Force.
Lyons led the Spartans with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting. He also had three assists. Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) was the only other Spartan in double figures, with 10 points. Murphy, who also handed out a team-high four assists, sank two 3-pointers to tie Carnell Penn’s all-time school record of 205.
Brandon Monroe (Raeford, N.C.) had six rebounds to pace the Spartans, who outrebounded the Falcons 31-25.
