View Full Version : Deep threat for a bronze WR?

Isn't this a counter productive attribute for a bronze WR?
If I am using a guy like Cliff Branch, I don't really want extra safety attention.
It almost seems like Ismail is better at deep routes because he doesn't get safety attention as much.

It depends on how you look at it. I find it great when you have a streaking WR who demands the attention then your supporting WR or more so, the TE is either wide open or one on one.
But, if you only have 1 legend WR, yea, it could be counter productive. However, most online players would have him doubled anyway.

that's a really good question.
here's another one... does the frustration level go up in relation to the seperation from the defender when they drop the pass?

It sure does, makes me wonder why he ran the route.

I guess I was just wondering.
The team I have him on usually has either Rice or Herman Moore so it isn't like I need Branch to produce much.
But, given his attributes, it would lend one to believe that he would be used for deep routes.
However, given the extra attention he often draws, he basically serves as a decoy for the most part. I guess that is fine, but I like throwing the occcasional deep ball :D

Deep Threat IMO is useless. If you send any WR on a streak route, the safety will always follow him.

NOT true. I can't count the times Willie Wood just let a guy run past him unless I manually assigned him to a receiver.

personally i like cliff branch because even though he does draw a lot of safety attention, if you leave him 1on1 he will destroy you deep and with my great run game many people bring safeties down, or blitz a lot so he is almost always open deep.

That's part of the point of the ability. It attracts the extra safety attention, so your other receiver is open deep more. However, if Cliff Branch is in position to make the catch, odds are that he will.

Yeah, but that was kinda my point. It is a counter productive attribute.
Usually when you play online, most teams have at least one quality safety and at least a bronze corner to cover Branch (or Harper or Gault) and with the safet help, he won't win that matchup too often.
The team I use Branch on also has Rice on it so it isn't like I NEED a lot of production from Branch, but I tend to shy away from generic WRs so that really only gives me Rice and the tight end to throw to with any consistency.
If Branch is going to be doubled, I might as well pick up a guy like Rob Moore and at least have another posession guy.
Btw, I ran some pratice last night with Rocket and Branch. I know practice isn't the end all for proving game time results, Rocket was open deep WAY more often than Branch. It wasn't really even close.

It's a double-edged sword. Deep Threat not only draws extra safety attention, but it implies that the player really *is* good deep, which means that if the safety help isn't there to be had, it's going to be trouble.
Your call really.

Yea, it depends on how your team is built. I like it because it will generally leave the TE open on fades or streaks. Or even your generics for a mid range pass in the middle of the field.

They will get safety attention only if defense is in cover 2 or they have the safety playing the deep zone.

I've used him with a silver receiver and sent them both deep to see who the safety would go with.
The safety goes with the silver receiver.
The silver receiver seems to get seperation EARLIER with no deep threat attribute than what Branch does, but this is against the cpu.
I can still use him effectively, but going deep isn't a given.
