How Do I Manage Games Effectively??

I'm trying to play a 162-game franchise and since I don't have the time to actually play out every, single game, I like to play the first inning, then manage innings 2-7, then play 8 and 9. However, while I play decent against the computer myself, whenever I manage, the computer goes off on me and I'm rarely in the game by the time I join back in the game. This is costing me a chance at the playoffs in my season and I was wondering if there's any suggestions you have or strategies you have to not get raped by the computer every time you manage rather than play or just sim. I'm having the same problem, my cubbies rotation is just getting slammed. I honestly think managing is just like a crap shoot, you just take your chances, I believe there really is no strategy involved, unless anyone has words of wisdom.
