View Full Version : *Petie Miles - Start of something great*

Ok, before we get started. Let me give a little intro. I will NOT be discontinuing my Cal legacy, it'll still keep going (depending on how this goes, how I like it, how others like it, etc.) I was inspired by BlackCaesar's story of the same type on the IGN boards for NCAA football.
It'll be told more like a story, with chapters, etc. It starts in 2010, Miles' senior year in high school. It's a narrative story of Miles. Please tell me what you like, don't like, or if I should just kill this idea. I just want something to do that'll get me better as a writer, as it's something I find a little joy in doing.

What I Want
And here we go. The score is West High – 63, and East High – 61. We’ve only got 7 seconds to play, East’s ball. It’s been a hard fought battle all night long, and everyone in East’s arena can see the anguish in these players’ faces. East Eagles’ star SF, Petie Miles, has scored 28 points for the 1 seed. It all comes down to these for the section title. The center inbounds it to Miles, he’s sprinting up the court, blowing by the press, a West player steps in front for the charge, he steps back in an amazing change of momentum, chucks it from halfcourt, and…
--- “Get the hell up, kid!”
S***, I slept in again. For someone who loves school as much as I do, you’d think I’d get there on time. Teachers loved me, and it wasn’t just because I was the star on the basketball team or I got straight A’s. It wasn’t because of my dad, who founded one of the best up and coming telecommunications companies in Baltimore. I don’t know, I guess I just have that quality that makes me so likable. Most popular kid in school, dating a bookworm/cheerleader (yeah, I know, great find right?), wealthy. What more could I want?
I’m not your typical “rags to riches” star athlete. I have money, I don’t feel threatened by anyone, I have a great life, yeah. But there’s something missing that I just realized this past year. Our basketball team, East High Eagles, just plain sucks. We’re 1-16, with that one win coming against some country catholic school I don’t even know the name of. Us and West High used to have a big rivalry in everything, but in basketball the past few years, we’ve gotten slaughtered every time.
Anyways, what’s that one thing? I’m averaging 7 three pointers a game, 26.4 PPG. Why won’t colleges look at me? I want to play at the next level. NBA is reach, but college ball would be sick. Some big power conference team…Georgetown, Maryland, oh God I feel like a 12 year old getting his first wet – ok I’ll stop.
I want to experience college like not many ever get the chance to. I’ve got a good head on my shoulders, I just need that one boost to propel me to where I want to be.

Go Away, Saturday
“Peter, can I talk to you for a minute?”
I hated when people called me Peter. I’m not Peter Pan, not Peter Griffin, not Peter Parker. I’m Petie, for the last time.
“Sure, what is it Mrs. Jenkins?” Jenkins was my AP Physics teacher. I wasn’t sure what the old hag wanted to talk about, I get an A on every test.
“Good luck in the West game, Peter. I don’t mean to put pressure on you, but many people are counting on you to at least make it close. I hear there’s going to be some scouts there, too.”
Woah, woah, woah. Did she just say scouts? Now I’m interested, lady. “What kind of scouts?” I asked.
“Hmm, I think Mr. Booker said something about UMBC, Albany, couple of those schools.”
I sighed. I didn’t want to play at UMBC, their logo is a puppy and they suck. I’m tired of sucking. My girlfriend, she can suck. I don’t.
I just headed home after school, forgot practice. I’m the captain, yeah, but I’ll make up some excuse. I know I seem cocky, but I’m really not. I’m actually a pretty modest, quiet guy. I don’t drink, don’t do drugs, don’t cheat, any of that. Like I said, I got a good head on my shoulders.
The West game was in 2 days, Saturday. It could wait…

Haha no, it takes place in 2010. He'll be a frosh in college in 2011. I created him. Longer update here...
-----------------------------------------------
Game Day
I always hated playing games on Saturday. Your whole mental clock is screwed with. I couldn’t sleep last night. Just one of those nights, I guess. I kept asking my dad for prescription sleeping pills, but he’s a guy who hates medication of any kind. All natural kinda guy. Maybe he should let mom know that.
I “woke up” to the sound of Beethoven’s 5th. This rap s*** is overrated. The classics are where it’s at. Yeah, it’s my ringtone too. It was Rachel, my girlfriend. She wasn’t really hot in that way, but she’s got that cute, girl-next-door face. Before you ask, no she’s not the head cheerleader.
“Petie, sorry to wake you.”
“It’s 7:30 on Saturday. No, you didn’t wake me.” I loved being sarcastic.
“Look, I’m just going to get straight to the point. Last night, uh, something happened.”
Yeah? I knew where this was going. I don’t even know how I was going out with her for nearly 2 years. We’re complete opposites, besides being athletic and smart. She’s a party animal, outgoing, bombastic, all that jazz. I’m not.
“Let me guess…”
“ - I, uh, I mean, Bruce kissed me.”
“That all, Rach…”
“ – That’s not all.”
Damn, girl, let me finish a 2-word sentence. She continued, “I kissed him back. I was drunk, you know? We, we went a little further. I don’t want to get into details, but I’m really sorry. I don’t want us to end, it was just a big mistake, I’m sorry.”
We’d gone through this before. She did the same thing, with the same guy, at the same time of the year, last year. I should’ve seen it coming, she was tutoring him after school every day. I didn’t want to talk to her, so I just hung up. What’s with girls, anyways? She knew we were finished, but I might as well just keep it undisclosed for now.
I don’t cry, rarely get sad, just disappointed. I’m disappointed in a lot of things in life, but that’s a different matter. I slipped into some shorts, and headed on to the kitchen. Mom was there, her cleavage hanging out like she’s a model from the 90’s. Sometimes she just frustrates me, but she’s the only one in my family I can talk to really. My lil sister is a *******, a 16 year old who, like Rachel, is the exact opposite of me. Spoiled brat.
“Here hun, I made you some pancakes.” I told her I didn’t want any, so she gave them to Steph, my sister. Pig.
Game time was set at 5:00 sharp. Early for me, and again with the Saturday hate. Whatever. I put some clothes on, checked my FaceSpace (the new fad, ya know), and went to the gym. I stole some keys from Coach Braun, so got in pretty easily.
Ahh, the sound of sneakers squeaking on the hardwood, nothing better. Our gym was small, about 500 seating, but it could get loud…if we won some games for once. I remember when I was in 7th grade, we won the MarylandState championship. Good times back then, except the Coach was a d*** then. Thank God he moved on to DIII coaching before I got on varsity.
The coach now, Braun, is a b****. He’s not mean, not strict, just a sensitive, soft, b****. We can’t get anything accomplished with a coach none of us take seriously. After about 10 minutes of shooting around, getting my mind off things, Ian Walters showed up. Ian was my best friend, although an idiot, and played PG. We talked a lot about going to the same college no matter what, but with my breakout season this year, I think I could make it big while he’ll have to settle at some small school.
“Sup, P?” He was short, but well-built. He was one of the only white kids on the team (as was I), but he still got loads of respect from both the coaches and underclassmen.
“Just getting’ ready, same ol’.”
“Mind if I join in.” I shook my head. Like I said, I don’t talk much, pretty quiet guy. If I can get away with not saying anything for a shake of the head or grunt, I’ll do it.
I felt so at home in the gym. I would stay there most of the day, not even shooting, just sitting on the pull-out bleachers, staring into space.
“What you lookin’ at, P?"
I shook my head…

One last one before I hit the hay...
Disappointment is a Wonderful Thing
“And now, your starting small forward, the 6’5’’ senior, Petieeeeee “P” Milessss!”
The same gym I was shooting around in 8 hours before was full. It exploded when my name was announced. I loved that feeling, coming out of the teammate-made tunnel of arms and high-5’s. I’m a different person on that hardwood.
We didn’t do one of those pump up circles like most teams do. We didn’t see the point. We were 1-16. West was 15-0. What were we going to do against them? We can’t even put a ***** in their armor.
The tip went to West and their 6’11’’ monster, Juwan Gaines. Dude was being recruited by Duke, BC, Michigan, Georgetown, you name it. How we would hold them to 42 points in the first half, I don’t know, but we were still down by 16.
I just stopped caring in the 3rd quarter. Those 8 minutes went by fast as hell, and I looked up at the scoreboard, as it read 63-28. I peeked at the stands and saw some middle-aged guys who looked like they didn’t have jobs wearing some college collared shirts. UMBC, Albany, even UAB was there. Alabama, ahem, no thank you.
The final ended up being like 92-50. I only had 15 points, went 3/10 from three. Not the kind of showing I needed, but like I said, I didn’t care. I was just disappointed. Not angry at myself, not sad, not “Oh my God what am I going to do!” Just, disappointed.
My parents told me it was all okay, my fellow students sighed and slugged their way out of the exits. Mrs. Jenkins came up to me and patted me on the back. Sure, let’s all act like we feel bad for the kid after putting so much pressure on him. Great teacher.
But then someone came up to me. He was wearing a sports coat, and a red tie. His college colors, I assumed. He told me to wait up, and after I got changed into my button down shirt and slacks, I waltzed out of the locker room to go meet him up in the gym.
“Mr. Miles, I’m Stephen Cordeaux. We’ve been watching you play throughout the year, and think you may have some potential. As you know, we have 7 scholarships to offer for this season. We’re always looking at the local kids, but you Mr. Miles, have some talent. I’ve already sent a letter to your house, and your father has even made a couple of phone calls to me. Good game tonight, son, we’ll be in touch.”
Good game? I had 15 points. Either way, I was interested.

:D my bad MAK, I totally didn't mean to do that :P
Yes preo, this whole thing will be played out in CH2k8. Right now is just the intro to the story, then his school selection, then I'll jump to preseason, different plotlines throughout, season, etc. Might as well say it now, I'm playing 14 minute halves, MOP like always, player lock, BUT I will be playing the game as a regular game when Miles isn't in the game, to keep me interested in playing. So it'll be different than the Flynn one.
I hope ya'll continue to follow.

Elders Know Best
*Knock, Knock, Knock*
“Ye?”
“Hey, Petie. How you doing?”
“Fine.”
“I’ve got a letter for you.” My dad tried so hard to get a conversation going, but I’m quiet. He knew that, but sometimes wished I was a bit more…lively. Yeah, he means more like Steph. B****. I nodded back to him.
“Son, it’s from the man you talked to Saturday.”
I got a bit more excited, but didn’t show it. “It’s Friday. A bit late?”
“Yes, but either way, it’s still valid, and I think you’ll enjoy it.” I nodded, followed by an awkward silence that usually occurs when someone doesn’t respond with words.
“Well, here it is.” He left it on my desk next to my laptop. “You know you’ve also gotten some scholarship offers from UMBC, Vermont, UMass, and some DII schools.”
“Eh, not for me.” UMass? No way, last time they won anything was in the NIT back in ’08. Plus, I’m an Oriole. The BoSox can suck it.
“Alright Petie. If you need any suggestions or help, feel free to ask me,” he said as he started to pull the door towards him to close it.
“Wait…dad?”
“What’s up?”
I felt I had nowhere else to go. Mom was a ******* and probably did the same thing when she was a teenager, so I couldn’t ask her. Ian, the PG? Please, I mean I love the guy, but last time that turtle-dude got any was in 6th grade with Maureen Mussox. “I’m having some…girl problems.”
He chuckled and resumed closing the door, thinking I was joking around. Me, joke around? Never!
“No, dad, I’m serious.” He still smirked, but opened the door and sat down on my twin bed next to me where I was lying down. I sat up to continue talking. “It’s Rachel.”
“Ahh. What’s the matter? Wrong time of the month?”
“Nah, there’s not much of a time for this anywhere.”
“Oh, you mean she wore boxers instead of a thong?”
It kind of frustrated me that the one time I was trying to be serious, he was joking around. “No, well she cheated on me.” Now it was his turn for the awkward silence. “With Bruce, you know him?”
“Yeah, I think I saw him that one Parent Teacher conference day. His dad’s a real pain in the ***. You want advice?”
Well, to be honest, I didn’t know what I really wanted. I needed to tell someone, needed help, or, or something. “Look, here’s what you do,” he told me. “Get rid of her booty. That’s the easy part. Then you find what would hurt her most, whether it be punching her in that area or hooking up with her friend. That’s the hard part. But once you penetrate that tough outer shell, it’s all downhill from there.”
I didn’t know what to say, didn’t know what to do, still. Damnit dad, even when your advice is good you frustrate me. I just told him thanks, and he left.
What to do, what to do. I bet even President Obama couldn’t make this choice, we all know Bush couldn’t.
-----------------------------
Beethoven’s 5th again.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Mr. Miles, it’s Stephen Cordeaux, from Saturday.” I wasn’t expecting that at all. A call the same day as the letter comes? Who are they, the FBI?
“Oh, hello sir.” Yeah, I’m polite, sue me.
“I talked to the Head Coach, and he said I should invite you to our open gym in April. I know it’s several months away, but we wanted to let you know our interest level as soon as possible.”
“Thank you very much sir, I hope to hear from you soon.”
“And to you the same, Mr. Miles.”
I almost peed my pa…wait, yup, I did.

New Rivals
When I got back to school on Monday, I was met with several congratulatory high 5’s and YEAH’s. I continued to be my quiet self, only I was confused. What the hell was going on? Did I have a booger hanging out? Was my fly undone? Did I win the lottery?
I went over to my locker and asked Ian what was up. “You didn’t hear? S*** man, you gotta learn to be cocky sometime.”
I still had no idea. “Rivals.com. Damn boy, don’t you know you’re in the top 150?”
Holy s***. No way. RIVALS? ME? I dropped my bag and hustled through some underclassmen whom I didn’t care enough about to slap hands with, and headed to the library. Sure enough, I typed in Rivals.com, and there I was, the #105 overall recruit in the nation. I checked out my bio…nothing. At least they got my school right (which actually wasn’t good. You think I want colleges knowing my team is 1-18?).
Either way, I was ecstatic. I went over to talk to Ian right after.
“Yo man, I’m #105!”
“I know Petie, but that s***’s old news. Now you got something to do on the weekends besides study your *** off. I guess you just came out of nowhere and jumped onto the scene after you were invited to that open gym.”
Damn, how did people find out crap so quickly? Do I have no privacy?
Throughout the day, I was asked what was up by a lot of “fans,” or people who talk to me just because they want to tell people they know someone nearly famous. I didn’t really respond, just giving a shrug of the shoulders pretending not to know. I didn’t give a s*** what anyone thought of me. That’s another thing you should know, I don’t care what people think of me. I love to be hated. I thrive on it.
When I got home, I read up on Rivals. It would be my new go-to website when I was in need of getting away from Steph and my nagging mom. I read up on every recruit in the nation, finding their faults, skills, where they were headed, all that.
Juwan Gaines, that beast of a West center, was listed as the #6 overall recruit. Damn, and we played against him? Glad to know we only got beat by 43.
But man, to be on Rivals. That’s a huge step. I’m already being recruited by several good teams. I checked out what it had for my interests, and it said UMass, Rutgers, BostonCollege, and a couple other mid-major schools. I was amazed they didn’t have Mr. Cordeaux’s team on there though…

Now you'll find out...
All-Star
Well, our season finished off pretty well actually. In our last 5 games, we won 4 of them, in which I averaged 29.3 PPG, definitely impressing some people. It was nice to win for once, but of course we got our *** handed to us in the first round of sectionals by Freddie Thomas High.
Around early February, they announced the All-Baltimore teams for the all-star game. I was thrilled to be picked for the East team. There would be loads of college scouts at the game, and Mr. Cordeaux called to tell me he’d be keeping a close watch on me.
I had been looking forward to the game all month, and when it finally came on March 1st, I hadn’t been more excited for a game in a long time. It was meaningless, of course, but it wasn’t to me and several other players. This was our chance to show we can compete against the best of Baltimore, which in case you didn’t know, is pretty hard to do.
Ian got honorable mention, which sucks because now I’d be playing with a bunch of kids from schools I had never played against. To be real, Ian was the only other player on East who had a chance to make it in DI ball. I checked him out on Rivals and he’s a 3* recruit, which is pretty damn good. I think I saw Cordeaux talkin’ to him the other day, maybe they figure if he doesn’t go, I won’t go.
The game was on Friday night, which gave all of us players some time to introduce ourselves and get to know each other.
This one kid, our starting PG, Jose Martinez, was a *******. He played for Red Creek, which is near the border of Baltimore (note: I’m making all these schools up). He had a damn good handle, and committed to USC. I introduced myself to him, and he responded with, “Yeah, I know who you are. You can shoot aight, but you ain’t that good. Stay outta my way, I want my minutes.” Alright man, whatever.
By game time, we were all ready in the locker rooms. Bear Gabriel was the head coach, who led Marcintosh High to the sectional finals for Class A this past year. We were in Class AAA, so we didn’t have to do much with him, but he was a pretty laid back guy for this game. He just told us to go out there and have fun, as it was just an all-star game, no need to rise tensions.
To sum it all up, I didn’t play much. I figured I probably wouldn’t, but my friends and family supported me, which was good. I played about a quarter altogether, and had 9 points on 2 threes. Gaines on West got MVP, with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Like he needed more any awards, he was already a McDonald’s AA.
Several scouts came up to players after the game. The lone one that came up to me was Cordeaux. “You know what, Mr. Miles?”
“Hello, sir. Good to see you. What’s that?”
“As you know, our team is doing very well right now. The in-season recruiting period is almost over, and we want to take full advantage of that. Based on your very limited, but great performance tonight, I’ve talked to Gary, and we’re going to invite you to our campus. It’s a very exclusive club you’ll be joining, and you’ll get to walk the campus, meet the players and coaches, and even practice with some of our other recruits. We’d love to see what you’ve really got against some of our top players to further our knowledge of your skills.”
I was in shock. After not playing much, I thought my time with Cordeaux was finished. He obviously liked what he saw, and after a quick talk with my parents, I was headed to College Park in a week..
Sorry JJ, you were right the first time :D Had to keep people guessing though

Wetting My Pants
We would arrive at the ComcastCenter at around noon on Friday, February 5th 2011. The atmosphere on the campus was crazy when we were driving through. Tomorrow was a huge showdown in the ACC, because #1 Virginia Tech was coming to town. Maryland was ranked #8 in the nation with a 15-5 record (losses against #15 Virginia, #21 Duke, #13 FSU, Brown and Colorado). The ACC is definitely loaded, which really makes me want to play here next year, with 5 teams in the top 20.
Maryland had used 3 of their 7 scholarships earlier in the year during the signing period, getting a 7’ 3* center, Pennsylvania’s Mr.BB SG Pearson Hoskins, and the #10 PF Tim Grace, a 4* as well.
So myself and some other recruits, 3* PFs Patrick Obasohan and Ted Coles, and 7’2’’ 2* center Jarrad Noah met up with each other in the arena. The place was empty, except for a couple coaches and scouts. We were waiting a while for Gary Williams to come (and boy could I wait), so Jarrad stirred up some conversation.
“So, ya’ll likin’ Maryland?” The giant seemed nice enough, but obviously had no sense of educated grammar.
“Ye, man, this place is tight,” responded Ted Coles.
“Can’t wait to dunk on that rim,” added Patrick.
I stayed quiet, leaving my absence in the conversation do the talking for them. A couple minutes later, Coach Williams walked in.
“Welcome, gentlemen. I’m sure you have met Theodore Clemmons, our head scout, and Stephen Cordeaux, our second in command. These two have told me plenty about all 4 of you, and as you know, we do have 4 scholarships to offer. We have several other recruits we’re looking at, so don’t view this as an automatic scholarship offer. We want to show you around this beautiful campus on College Park, and want to see what you guys are really made of.”
He shook hands with all of us, as we told him our names, where we were from, etc. Assistant coach Todd Sherrons then took the floor. “Alright guys, first we’re gonna give you a little tour of the ComcastCenter. 18,000 fans every night pack into this stadium to watch our storied basketball team fight against the national powers of America and the ACC. It’s well known we have some of the most intense fans in all of basketball…”
Yes, yes, so we toured for a little bit, learned some information. We then hit the best part, the locker rooms and training facilities. When we walked into the weight room, damn, I was wetting my pants. I’m a pretty scrawny kid for 6’5’’, but still, when a weight room is that nice, you got to use it. The film room was state of the art, newly built, with a big projector and movie-theatre seats. It was amazing. The best part, though, was the locker room. Each locker was about 5 feet wide, and as we looked around the room, Maryland star players like junior SG Major Cambidge (17.5 PPG), and the wealth of seniors like center Braxton Dupree (13.1 PPG) and current starting small forward Dramane Diaz (7.0 PPG). The white Terrapins uniform hung from the wood locker like a trophy, a privilege to put on. Xbox 360s were on HDTVs in every corner of the room.
From then on, without seeing anything else, I knew I wanted to be a Terrapin.

Terp for a Day
We were treated to an excellent dinner with the team. It made me know how much Coach Williams is willing to do to get a recruit on his team. He cares about his players, and that is a big plus for me. I laid back for most of Friday night, not being too outgoing towards the Maryland players, while the other recruits were bombarding them with questions.
“Do ye f*** Duke up every year?”
“Any cheap shots?”
“Have you eva fought in practice?”
“How are da Terp girls?”
Not my style, but hey, not my life either.
My parents and I were given a hotel room on the edge of campus, and made sure to get some sleep. I checked the local news before we went to sleep.
“And now onto sports, as the #8 ranked Maryland Terrapins will have a doozy of a game on their hands, going up against national power and conference rival, #1 Virginia Tech. The Hokies have dominated every team throughout the year they play against, and the Terps will have their hands full. 4 of Maryland’s recruits are attending the game, so it will be up to Coach Williams’ squad to impress these high school studs.”
Damn, even the locals take recruiting seriously. I always grew up a Terp fan, secretly. My father went to George Mason, whom I was offered a scholarship by, and always told me to root for the Patriots. But I’d always watch the Maryland games back in the glory days when they won the national championship, wishing I could one day be a part of that.
We got to sit it on the pre-game practice at around 2:00 after a quick lunch. They ran through some plays, some drills, and a lot of talking and pumping up. To our surprise, the managers gave us some practice clothes to throw on, and we were asked to join in a little scrimmage. I’m not even sure if that’s legal, but it was great. Myself, the 3* PF Ted Coles, and the Terps’ best player, Major Cambridge (89 ovr for those at home), went 3 on 3 against the other recruits, Obasohan and Noah, and the starting SF Dramane Diaz. They had a slight height advantage, but we were obviously much quicker, with Cambridge being 2nd team All-ACC last year as a sophomore.
We played around a little bit, but it got pretty intense after a couple of points were scored. I drained a three over Diaz, and Cambridge had a nasty dunk over Noah, to put us up 3 (going by 1’s). Obasohan gave a hip check to Coles, and slammed it home. Things were getting heated, and before anything could succumb, Coach Williams ended it. Mr. Cordeaux would tell me later that they were all very impressed by my shooting ability, and that I should expect a scholarship offer soon.
Game time was set at 7:00, so for a little bit we went into the film room to watch some tape on the Hokies. They were one of the most well balanced teams in the nation, and extremely experienced. Senior PG Malcolm Delaney was a fantastic all-around player, averaging 14.9 PPG, 4.9 RPG, and 4.1 APG. They didn’t boast the most talent in the nation, but were very well coached and a great defensive team. It was going to be hard for the Terps to pull out the win.
A couple hours later, everyone started to suit up. We stayed for Gary William’s pre-game speech. “Look guys, I’m going to keep this short and sweet. You don’t need me to tell you how important this game is. Anytime you play the best team in the nation, if you win, teams will respect you. We need to earn some respect after early exits in the past couple years. I’m not going to lie to you, Virginia Tech is a very good team. We’re better though. We need to go out there, play for your fans, your family, and yourselves, and bring all that you’ve got to the table. Let’s go all in here, boys.”
We were escorted out of the locker room, and took our seats right behind the bench. Grevious Vasquez was sitting near, as the role player for the Memphis Grizzlies decided to come home and watch his former team. He did some small talk with us, just some words of advice and telling us how great Maryland is.
The Terps came out to marching band, as the Comcast Arena exploded. Hours of anticipation all led to this…

Take ‘Em Out, Terps
Words cannot describe how amazing this game was to watch. Although I’m still in high school, and have yet to be offered a scholarship, I felt like I was a part of the team. The atmosphere when the starting line ups were introduced and the ball was tipped was 10 times anything I had experienced before. I had never been to a big time college basketball game. My dad took me to some local, small college games before, and it was nothing like this at all.
It got even more crazy early on, as the Terps jumped to a 21-5 lead. The Hokies proved why they were the best team in the nation, making it a 44-39 game at half. Marcus Cambridge, the team captain, was yelling at everyone to step it up. From right behind the bench, I could hear Gary Williams yelling at his players in the huddle, “I know we’re in foul trouble. Be f***in’ careful out there! Patience, remember what got us this lead in the first place. We need to come out in the second half, and show the country why we deserve this ranking.”
At halftime, the cheerleaders performed, and after that myself and the other recruits, led by a small assistant coach, headed to a very exclusive little club, where we met some of the main boosters for the program. We chilled for a couple minutes, ate some delicious food, and got back to our seats. We mingled with each other quite a bit, on how amazing this experience was.
The second half was a methodical, grind it out type of game. Maryland jumped to a big lead early, and never came close to giving it up, holding VT to 20 second half points, winning 70-59. The crowd was going crazy, and I couldn’t help but to cheer as loud as I could.
I didn’t want to leave, but after the game my parents and I drove back to Baltimore. I thanked the coaches for the experience, and the whole ride home I talked about how if I was offered a scholarship, I would take it in a snap.
When the polls came out Monday, Maryland was #5, while Virginia Tech was #3. Bull****. Either way, I had a fantastic time, and knew I’d be loving every minute of the Comcast Arena for 4 years to come.

I have a college
“Hey, so, did you want to maybe catch a movie sometime?”
“Yeah, sure. What were you thinking, Mission Impossible IV?”
“Ummm…I don’t know. Whatever you want.”
The doorbell rang, interrupting my conversation with Katie, this new girl I had been talking to. She started to approach me a lot in the past month, often talking to me about Rachel and how much of a b**** she was. I had forgotten Rachel ever since that talk with my dad, deciding against a second chance. I don’t know how she got my number, but she was hot, and a pretty bright girl. I was really digging her. “Hold on, Katie.”
I heard a bunch of knocks again. “Hold up! Jesus,” I said under my breath. I threw on a shirt and got the door. I was in awe of who it was.
“He…he…hello Coach Williams.” Yes, it was Gary Williams…at my door. Maryland had just beaten Boston College to move to 21-5 on the year, the #3 team in the nation now. It was February 24th, a couple days before the in-season recruiting period was over.
“Hey, Petie, mind if I come in?”
Of course I didn’t mind, so I quickly called my mom down to help me make Coach Williams more at home. “Hello again, Mrs. Miles. It’s a pleasure seeing you.”
My mom was in shock as well, immediately getting some food from the kitchen. “No it’s alright, Mrs. Miles.”
“Oh please, call me Julie.”
He laughed. “Alright, Julie. The coaches and I have convened several times on this subject, and we have come to a decision. Since you live so close to College Park, I decided to handle the matter myself. We only have a couple scholarships remaining, and have decided to offer one up to you, Petie.”
Oh my God. My whole life I had been waiting for this moment, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. “Coach Williams, I would love nothing more than to accept it.”

Watching my team make a run
March 20, 2011
The first two rounds of the tournament for the 2 seed Maryland were handled with ease. I now found myself cheering for them like I never had for the Orioles, Wizards, and Ravens. I listened to every radio show, watched every TV segment, every minute of every game, and deciphered their road to the final 4 from the Midwest regional.
Many thought the Terrapins had an easy road to Houston, where the Final 4 was being held. They would have to play #3 Gonzaga in the Sweet 16, and #1 MichiganState wasn’t all that good.
Maryland blew by #15 Nevada in the first round, with every starter scoring in double digits. They then routed #7 Saint Louis 99-49 in the second round, with senior center Braxton Dupree dropping 25. They play Gonzaga on the 24th, and luckily, #9 West Virginia upset MichiganState in the 2nd round.
Ian didn’t end up getting an offer from Maryland. He moved his way into the Top 200 players, and committed to GeorgeMasonUniversity. They finished 17-14 on the season and didn’t get a bid to the NCAAs. Still, him and I should compete against one another often.
March 27th, 2011
I can now say I will be playing on a defending Final 4 team next year. I wish I could’ve attended these games, as they would’ve been a joy for a Maryland fan to watch. I can imagine Coach William’s speech to them all right now. “The past 3 years we’ve disappointed our fans. In 2008, we didn’t make the tourney. In 2009, we got out in the second round. In 2010, we reached the Sweet 16. Now, you can look each other in the eye, and say you’re a part of the 2011 Final 4.”
They trounced Gonzaga in the 16, 79-64, on the back of Major Cambridge’s 24 and 8 boards. They’d then play #5 Texas in the Metrodome in the Elite 8, winning 74-66 thanks to Braxton Dupree’s 25.
To think I’ll be playing on this team next year will be amazing. Granted, 7 players are graduating, and Cambridge will probably go to the NBA, but imagine playing on the defending championship team. All that stands in their way is #1 Florida in the Final 4, and #4 Arizona/#3 Villanova in the other side of the bracket.
April 2nd, 2011
National Championship, here they come. In a fantastic game, Maryland ousted #1 Florida, 82-77. It was by no means a well-played game, as Dupree went 3/15 from the field for 12 points. Like Maryland, the Gators boasted several talented veterans (notably 2 guards, one that was a junior, who were both 90 rated) paired with some talented youngsters. Luckily, the Terps were too much.
They’ll now play #3 Villanova in the national championship. It will be a game for the ages, to be remembered by Terp fans for a long time to come. I’m still in shock that the maybe champions of the nation offered ME a scholarship.
April 4th, 2011
“This was the Maryland Terrapins year to win the championship. With 9 players leaving (only 1 junior, Major Cambridge), it was now or never for this team. Unfortunately, the Terps’ comeback fell short against Villanova. Both teams were very evenly matched, with the Wildcats taking a 42-37 lead at the break. ‘Nova extended their lead to 13 midway through the second half, but Braxton Dupree, the center for Maryland, and next year’s NBA Top 5 pick Major Cambridge, led a turtle charge, taking a 1 point lead with 20 seconds to go. But in a play that will always be remembered, Villanova SG Roy Potter drained his only three of the game (1/7) at the buzzer to give the ‘Cats the upset, 77-75 win.”
I turned Sportscenter off.

Packing, Unpacking
August 2nd, 2011
It’s time to go, time to do my business of basketball at the college level. I spent my last summer in Baltimore as a high school student doing what everyone does, partying, going to movies, and spending time with my friends. Ian and I were the only ones on the basketball team to go DI, while some other players are going to DIII and DII. But I did do one thing more than others, and that was practice, practice, practice. My goal was to be a significant factor on the team, and with 9 underclassmen on the team (6 freshmen) and only 2 upperclassmen, I thought that was achievable. Just because I’m a great shooter, though, doesn’t mean it would come easy.
On the last day before I left, I caught up with Ian. He didn’t leave for school for another week, so he’d be without his best friend for a little bit. Then again, we’d be without each other for a while now that we went to separate colleges.
“So, you know George Mason’s gonna beat Maryland this year,” he said with a smirk.
“In your dreams, bro.”
“Oh, come on Petie. You know we’re on the rise.”
“And you know we went to the national championship last year.”
He didn’t say anything after that. We stopped talking about our little rivalry that we’d have, and started to talk about different things.
“Man, college life is gonna be real different, P.”
“I know man. Girls and parties and everything.”
“I don’t want none of that though,” he said, and I agreed. We wanted to focus on basketball, to be the best. And the only way either of us would achieve that is if we worked our asses off to be the best.
“Promise, Ian, neither of us are goin’ to get caught up in that s***.”
Back to some non-drama-b****y stuff. We said our good byes, and I headed back to my house. Everything was packed, from my team MVP trophy to my JJ Redick posters to my acne cream. My parents drove me up to College Park, and we headed for the Admissions Office.
“Name, please,” the old lady at the front desk said.
“Miles, Peter.” My mom insisted on answering for me like I was a kid, and also on calling me Peter. Ugh.
“Calvert Hall, Dorm #5.
“Who am I rooming with?”
“Hmm…Pearson Hoskins.”
Hoskins was one of the freshman on the team, he received a scholarship in the in-season recruiting period. He was a pretty talented shooting guard, 6’3’’, well built, and the Mr. Basketball for Pennsylvania. I’ll be honest, I was looking forward to rooming with him.
It took us quite a while and a bit of asking around to find my dorm, and when I got there, I saw some familiar faces. Last year’s freshmen and other Maryland players were all in the same vicinity of my dorm. Coach Williams wanted us all together, I guess.
I said hey to some of the players, Vincent Buscher, our starting point guard, and Oliver Neysmith, the shooting guard-turned-small forward for our team. They seemed pretty cool, and my parents and I started unpacking.
“Oh son, you’ve grown up so fast.”
“Yeah, yeah, mom.” I wasn’t looking forward to the mushy good byes of my mother.
Hoskins hadn’t showed up yet, so I had the place to myself for a little bit, got to choose my side of the dorm and took some extra time arranging everything after my parents left. We said our good byes, nothing good there.
Then Hoskins walked in…

Not-So Good Friends
“Sup, mothaf***a!”
Ok, you know how they say don’t judge a book by its cover? Well, I did. Hoskins came in, cocky as a Prom Queen, dressed like he just came back from a drug trafficking mission in the hood. Growing up in a white, rich suburb, it’s not what I was expecting.
I nodded my head at him, and he looked a bit confused. He came up next to me and slapped me on the back. “I said, wuzzup b****.”
“Nothin’.”
“You like JJ? Dude’s a c*** who neva got anythin’ done.”
Redick was one of my favorite players. He wasn’t that good an NBA player, but he and I were similar. Great shooters who people hated and I loved to be hated.
“Yeah, I guess.”
He started to unpack, put his s*** around his side of the room, and started o blast some rap music. I already knew no matter whom my roommate was it was going to be hard to listen to some nice, classical music, so I wasn’t that surprised.
But I was surprised when I saw him take out a couple rolls of money and some bags of marijuana. Damn, I knew I’d experience this somewhere, but on my team? My roommate? I knew I was in for some interesting times this year.
I pretended like I didn’t see, and went outside to explore a little bit. I was amazed at the gigantic campus. I had seen it when I visited, but it’s so much different when you’re actually a student there.
I decided to major in History. With straight A’s, I just wanted to do something I wanted to do for the rest of my life, in case basketball doesn’t work out. Classes didn’t start for another week or so, so I just spent my time relaxing and getting to know the place.
Later that night, Katie called me. We were getting a bit more serious, but I still hadn’t officially made her my girlfriend. She was attending UMBC, so she was close by, but I wasn’t sure how it’d work out going to different schools.
We didn’t talk about much, just some small talk, how college was, etc. I didn’t recall seeing Hoskins again that night, probably out doing some s***. It’s the first day man, come on.

First Day’s Work
I got into the Arena early for the first day of practice. The first game was still a month or so away, but we would definitely need a lot of training with so many players leaving. Many experts had already made their conference winners and Final Four picks, and we were nowhere close to being on their lists. Screw em…
The only other player there was our best player, Vincent Buscher, the sophomore point guard. He was no doubt a highly touted recruit (#8 overall), but wasn’t a cocky guy, worked hard for his minutes and deserved them.
“Sup, man. I’m Vince.”
“Hey – Petie. We talked a little in the dorms, but never really got into it.”
“Yeah, I’m a pretty busy dude, my bad. So, you ready for this first day?”
“Ha, I dunno man. Maryland’s going to be a lot different than my s*** high school.”
“Don’t worry, he usually goes easy the first few days.” That actually made me feel better, I was expecting it to be tougher than nails.
After the other players piled in one by one, Hoskins being last of course, Coach Williams and his assistants entered. “Hello, team. We’ve lost a lot of key players this year, as you all know. And know how we’re going to solve that? By running. On the endline, ladder.”
I glared over at Vince, who copped a smirk. F***er.
After what seemed like forever of running, we finally got into some drills, and at the end of practice, a little scrimmage. “We want to see what you players are made of, how you will react to the pressure being put on you on the first day.”
It was myself and the freshmen (besides our PG, Tamir Holt, a sophomore) against the returning players, 5 on 5. Basically, it was the starters against the reserves. I matched up with senior Oliver Neysmith, who many think will be the starting small forward this year, my competition. He’s the most experienced player on the team, the lone senior, so he knew everybody’s quirks and was obviously a very smart player.
We started out with the ball, and immediately got it down low to the 7’2’’ monster, Rashad Noah. Noah bricked a shot off the backboard and Coach shuck his head. On the other end, they decided to give me some testing, by going to Neysmith right away. He did a stutter step out of the triple threat, hesitated, and blew right by me for a lay up. S***.
I called for the ball on the other end after making a cut off of Noah’s screen, drained a three.
Things continued that way for both teams, with neither defense really feeling like playing. Nobody wanted it to get heated the first day, especially Coach Williams. The assistant coach, Mike Hayes, kept score, and the returning players won, 32-22, going by ones and twos.
After practice and a coach talk, we headed back to our dorms. Maryland Madness was coming up next month, which was the real intra-squad scrimmage. I was looking forward to that match-up with Oliver.

Golden Girl
Practice had been going well. Hard as hell, but I was determined to get some quality playing time this year. Coach Hayes really liked me, and thought I had a chance to take over as a starter early on in the year. He told me he was trying to convince Coach Williams to give me a shot, but Williams was hooked on trying to go for the most experienced line-up he can, and I don’t blame him.
He still hadn’t announced the starters, but tomorrow is the annual intra-squad scrimmage, Maryland Madness, and he’ll announce the teams tomorrow morning.
Anyway, myself and Oliver had developed a pretty good friendship. He being the starting SF (I assume), and the only senior on the team, I looked up to him in a way I couldn’t to other teammates or assistants. Many thought just because we were competing for a starting spot we were immediate rivals, but that wasn’t the case. He and I grew close, and started to hang a lot more often outside of practice.
He and I decided to go to the Pizza Roma to get a bite to eat before tomorrow’s scrimmage, which we knew we’d probably match up against each other in.
“S*** bro, you see that chick over there?”
“Yeah, what about her?”
“She’s hot, right?” I laughed at him.
“No, no, that’s not all. I tapped her, maybe two years back? Never called her again.”
I wasn’t sure how to respond, so I just chuckled to myself politely.
“Well, well, Mr. Neysmith. Haven’t talked to you in what, three years?” she said.
He smirked and whispered to me, “Hehe, okay, so maybe it was three.”
“And why is this innocent skinny little white boy hanging out with a scum like you?”
“Carla, come on now, can’t we get past that?” he said to her.
I didn’t pay much attention to their little b**** fight, looking past Carla and on to a girl who seemed to be with her. She had that girl next door look, with brunette hair and ocean blue eyes, and some cute little dimples. I was way too shy to talk to her, but luckily, I didn’t have to initiate any conversation.
“Hey, kid, come on over here,” she told me. I walked by a couple people and popped a squat opposite the table of her. “You’re a freshman on the basketball team, right?”
“Yeah, how’d you know?”
“Oh please, a 6’5’’ scrawny kid with some basketball shorts on? Not exactly too easy too spot here at Maryland. I’m Megan, but just call me Meg. Sophomore.”
“Name’s Petie, Petie Miles.” I felt like James Bond.
Just when I was about to get comfortable, Oliver came charging at me and grabbed my shirt. “Come on, bro, we out. Peace Carla.”
“I, uhh, guess I’ll see you around then, Megan, I mean Meg?”
“Oh, definitely.”
Oh man, Katie would not like to hear about this…

This Is Why We’re Freshmen
Coach announced the line-ups for the Maryland Madness this morning. Just as I expected, it was the freshman vs. sophomores (and junior/senior). Tamir Holt, a HS AA PG, was the only sophomore on our team. Hoskins would be our SG, myself as the SF, Tim Grace at PF, and Noah at C, with Patrick Obasohan and Ted Coles on the bench.
For the white team (older players), it was Vince at PG, junior Tom Culver (a PG who will play SG this year), Oliver at SF, Dwight Buchanan at PF, and Sean George at center, with a freshman, red-shirt walk-on on the bench, Maynard St. Clair, who’s 7’1’’.
From the get-go, it was obvious their team was more experienced and just plain better. Us freshmen got a wakeup call by being dominated 24-8 at the half (only played 7 minute halves), and I had all 8 of our points.
Boy, was I getting frustrated with my team. Nobody could make a shot, I was the only one, literally. Finally, with 2 minutes left in the game, somebody else scored. Noah hit a free throw.
Coach Hayes was directing our squad. He liked me a lot still, and thought if I had a great performance, I could become the 6th man. Well, when we ended up losing 44-15, that looked out of the question.
We shot an incredible 6/26 (23%) from the field, and all of those shots were made by me, while the white team went an even more incredible 19/22 and 3/3 from downtown. Vince flat out dominated our red team, with 13 points and 7 assists. Oliver had 9 points and 2 steals, while I had 14 points and 4 rebounds.
My shot was not falling at all, so when Coach Williams called me into his office afterwards, I was a bit surprised by what he had to say. “Petie, we know you’re a great shooter, and you work as hard as anyone I’ve coached. I’m letting you know now, you’ll be our 6th man for the Villanova game.”
Wow, after I said thanks I headed back to the dorms with Oliver. “Nice playin’ bro, I got you a couple times,” he said to me as we walked back. He did beat me off the dribble more than a couple times, but it was alright.
“Hey, I had more points.”
“We’ll see against Villanova, freshie.”

Announcements
“Buscher, Neysmith, Culver, Holt, Buchanan, Hoskins, George, Grace, Miles, Noah, Obasohan, Coles.”
Coach Williams was announcing who made the game-day roster. Everyone else became a full-time student or a practice squader.
The Villanova rematch was on November 10th, and Coach wasted no time in telling us who was going to start and who was going to play more.
“Starters will be: Vince at the point, Tom Culver at 2 guard, Oliver and Buchanan at forwards, and George as the big man. Sixth man will be either Holt or Miles.”
Now I’d be competing with Tamir Holt, a sophomore PG, for the 6th man position. Coach told us we’d each be getting about 20 minutes a game, which was fine by me.
We would prepare for ‘Nova for weeks, trying to prove to them and the nation that we should’ve beaten them last year. It would be tough, they had some great players, most of them juniors. Reece Potter, their star senior PG (89), was money from three, averaging 15.2 PPG last year. When I came in the game, I would have to guard their second best player, Nate Anderer, a junior with a lot of strength.
It would definitely be an uphill battle for us, but ESPN would be there, and everyone’s eyes would be on us…

This Is College Basketball
When I saw my locker, it was something special. My nameplate with that white, number 5 jersey. I got goosebumps, and wanted to go out there and play right then. I strapped on my red and white high tops, with my black socks and big white t-shirt, and was ready before anyone else. I wanted to play this game, and WIN this game.
Oliver called together the team following introductions. We circled up at midcourt on the Terps logo, put our arms around each other’s shoulders, and he led the chant.
“Game time! Game time! Game Time! Our house! Our house! Our house! Victory! Victory! Victory!”
He sent shivers down my spine. This, this was college basketball.
I hadn’t been sitting on the bench long when we all jumped in the air, following Vince’s strong lay up to the hoop only 8 seconds in to give us the first points of the game.
With 9:53 left in the first half, us down 12-5 with Villanova at the line, Coach Williams called Holt and I over. “Get Vince and Oliver, and make some damn shots!”
“Now entering the game for Maryland, sophomore point guard Tamir Holt, and freshman forward Petie Miles!!!”
I took my place in the paint, waiting to get the rebound off the free throw. “You ready, white boy?” I looked to my right and saw Nate Anderer, the guy I’d match up with for most of the night. I smiled and nodded, proceeding to hesitate and blow by him on our next offensive possession, going up for the lay-in, switching hands mid-air, and dropping it in for the deuce, for my first collegiate points.
“I’d say I’m ready.”
Unfortunately, it wasn’t long ‘til our fans started to boo. We couldn’t do much on offense or defense to stop their shooters, as I got swatted by Anderer, and we found ourselves down 25-9 with 6 and a half to go in the half.
Coach actually kept me in longer than I expected, because I was the only one scoring, with 6 points by the time I was taken out with just under 5 minutes left.
Nothing got better, but I got in with about 2 minutes left. I blew a wide open lay-up off of a steal late in the half, to which Coach pulled me aside to yell at me afterwards, but I made it up by tipping an inbounds pass, which was stolen by Buchanan, given back to me, and I made an incredibly upper body strength lay-up (think Derrick Rose) at the buzzer, with the score 50-29 at half. Villanova was on fire from the field, shooting 81%, and outrebounding us 16-8. Everyone could tell, we had no chance at this game.
But man was I on fire in the second half. Once I went in, I started draining shots, getting steals, all of it. Coach finally pulled me after I got a bit too confident and missed some shots, but it felt real good being out there.
What was sad about the game was the only three point shots we could make were being made by our big men. Patrick Obasohan got in there for the first time late in the second half, and drained 2 open threes. We actually felt we could come back, with just under 3 minutes left down only 16. Then, that made me finally make some shots from downtown, and I made one.
The final was 91-76, pretty good for how we started the game.
Coach brought us together in the locker rooms, and didn’t seem all that mad. “Overall, our second half was pretty good. We still need to work on defense, but I liked what I saw. That’s it fellas, tomorrow 3-5:30 practice.” We all started to walk away, but Coach Williams called me over. “Petie, you played very well today, I was very impressed. Keep it up, and you’ll be starting.”
I did have a great game, thanks to my second half. I led the team in scoring with 24 points on 11/22 shooting. I didn’t even realize I shot that much, but they were falling. I also had 2 steals, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Buchanan was the only other guy in double-digits with 16 and 4 steals. Andrerer had a mere 6 points. Ha, who’s ready now?
This, this was college basketball.

Unnecessary Run-In
We’re playing Saint Peter’s next in the first game of The Deodorant Classic tournament. Practice, however, wouldn’t be easy.
Ladders, suicides, 16 in 60’s, oh my! Running was aplenty, but not as much as shooting drills. When I was a kid, everyone always loved to shoot, obviously, but the way Coach Williams did it, was not fun at all.
I guess, for some reason, some excitement has started to rise around our team. More fans started to sit in the bleachers for hours to watch our practices, thinking we were the next generation of a great Terrapin team. It would not be easy to answer their call, but myself and the other underclassmen were determined to do so.
Speaking of fans at practices, a couple days before the Peters game I spotted Meg in the stands. She was layin’ back, joking around with Carla and some other chicks. I nudged Oliver and nodded in their direction, and he got a bit uneasy. Apparently Carla called him out yesterday by getting his number, and embarrassed him a pretty decent amount. P****.
After practice ended, I changed quickly, put on a HEAVY amount of deo-for-the-B.O. (kind of ironic considering we’re playing in the Deodorant Classic), and walked out searching for Meg. Lucky for me, she scared the living s*** out of me by coming up from behind.
“Hey superstar.”
“Ha, what are you talkin’ about?”
“Oh, I saw your 24 points. Pretty sexy, if you ask me.”
We laughed, knowing she was joking. I looked around for Oliver, and saw him bolt for the back door. P****.
“So, we still haven’t had time to hang yet,” I said.
“Yeah, darn shame, eh?”
“Yes it is, Mrs. Canadian.”
“Now, what if I actually was from Canada? Wouldn’t feel so good th…”
Before she finished, my phone started to ring. I was a bit embarrassed by the ringtone, but Meg had other ideas. “Oh my God! Beethoven? Hard to find, these days.”
I smiled and agreed, then answered.
“Hello?”
“Hey Petie, it’s me.”
“Oh, uhhh…hi Katie.”
“I’ve been thinking…”
“Katie, I can’t, uh, really talk right now.”
“Well, alright then. Talk to you later.” She hung up.
“Who was that,” Meg questioned me.
“No one.”

Sorry guys, I'm afraid I have some really crappy news.
I consulted with cincy a little about it, and we've agreed I should start over my legacy.
It's a long story, but my file is corrupt for my legacy and the rotations. I don't feel like writing out the whole thing, but it basically sucks and would really mess everything up.
But! Have no fear, I'm going to continue this same thing in another thread. The names will probably be different and results of course, but overall the writing will just be copied and pasted into the new thread. And, it's up to you to vote on which team I use this time. Give me your ideas in my new thread, and I'm really sorry I had to end this.
