Phil Hughes was rated the # 2 prospect in the minor leagues for 2007 by Baseball Digest. Brian Cashman indicated in December 2006 that he wanted Hughes to start the 2007 season in AAA, though he has the talent to start the season in the major leagues. In January 2007, the Yankees announced that Hughes was being invited to spring training. After facing him in batting practice in spring training in February, Jason Giambi said: "He looks like a young Rocket." Ben Davis called his curveball "devastating," and Todd Pratt called it "deadly."After catching Hughes in a spring training game in 2006, Yankees star catcher Jorge Posada said he had "the best arm in camp, no doubt about it,". He began the 2007 pitching for the AAA Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees.

Hughes, the second-youngest player in the American League in 2007, made his major league debut on April 26, 2007 against the Toronto Blue Jays wearing number 65 (he wears 65 because he wanted to wear a number ending in five, and every lower number ending in five was taken or retired (5 Joe DiMaggio, 15 Thurman Munson, 25 Jason Giambi, 35 Mike Mussina, 45 Carl Pavano, 55 Hideki Matsui). In four and a third innings, he allowed four runs on seven hits, earning his first career loss. In his second major league start on May 1, 2007 against the Texas Rangers, he was dominant and in control while maintaining a no-hitter through 6 and 1/3 innings before pulling his left hamstring on an 0-2 curveball to Mark Teixeira. He returned on August 4 against the Kansas City Royals, in a 4.2-inning no-decision.

Hughes made his first post-season appearance in 2007 against the Indians pitching in relief in Game 1. He relieved Roger Clemens and pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in Game 3. He struck out four and earned his first playoff win. The youngest person on the Yankees roster (Hughes, 21) replaced the oldest person on the roster (Roger Clemens, 45) when Clemens left with a hamstring injury.

For the 2008 season Phil will be wearing number 34, a number he wore in high school, and for the 2006 Futures Game.

Hughes named #3 Starter
In the long debated battle for the number 3 spot in the rotation between veteran Mike Mussina and youngster Phil Hughes, Hughes wins. He had this to say. "It was a good battle for the spot and was healthy for the team. Competition like this makes both players better and an ultimately better team. Obviously Girardi expects alot out of me and hopefully I can get the job done." The Yankees will start the season this Monday at home against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Yankees are one of the few teams in the American League that didn't reload this off-season. Girardi says, "We like what we have and if we execute properly we will succeed." Jokingly saying, "Our biggest off-season acquisition was Alex Rodriguez."

Alot of "experts" have the Yankees missing the playoffs this year behind the Red Sox. Captain Derek Jeter says, "Don't worry about us, we'll be there, it's the other teams that need to worry."

Phil Hughes will make his first start of the season against the Blue Jays this Thursday.

Recap
Hughes first start of the season results in a loss. His shaky 2nd
inning gave him his loss. He gave up 2 solo home runs that inning.
Lackluster offense combined with a shaky bullpen results in a loss.
Hughes said, "I'm dissapointed that I couldn't get the win but sometimes
you go through shaky games like that and just have to get them next
time." Hughes next appearancce will be in Kansas City.

Yankees off to slow start; Look to Hughes for win

(AP)It took the Yankees 4innings to get their first hit, a double by Robinson Cano. Alex Rodriguez failed to score him and the score remained 0-0. As well as Phil Hughes was piching so was Royals pitcher Brian Bannister. "Their pitcher matched everything ours was doing and it was a great pitching matchup because of that.", Derek Jeter.

Indeed it was a great pitching matchup until the bottom of the 5th inning when Phil Hughes suffered a bruised shin on a line drive back to the pitcher. He was faced on the DL and expects to return in 2-3 weeks. Phil was not available to speak to after the game.

The Yankees were able to get the win but at a much higher price to pay. Girardi says, "He's one of our younger guys that we count on to pitch. We hope to have him back as soon as possible."

The Yankees called up Ian Kennedy to replace the injured Hughes.

Breaking News!
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i189/zack4life22/zNYP7192007.jpg
After two weeks on the DL Yankees Manager Joe Girardi sent pitcher Phil Hughes to the minors for a rehab start. Girardi says, "He needs the work. He hasn't pitched in two weeks. He'll come up to our team after the first start."

He met with the media after the game and had this to say. "My arm felt great and i feel real good. My leg is fully healed and I'm ready to move back with the Yankees. Hopefully I can help bring the team above .500." Hughes will rejoin the team later this week.

Hughes return to the big leagues
Hughes is set to make start May 2nd in a home game against the Seattle Mariners. Opposing pitcher Felix Hernandez is 4-1 with a 3.67 ERA.

This looks to be a great pitching duel between two top young pitchers in todays game.

Hughes took the podeum after practice today.

The podeum is now open for questions...

Hey phil, what did you work on the most in your rehab appearance, and did your leg affect your velocity at all?

I really worked on keeping the curveball low and I did a good job of that. My leg was definitely hurting when I pushed off and I'm at about 80% right now. I should be alright for my next start.

OUCH!
Hughes shaky first inning gives Mariners early 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded and nobody out in the 3rd the Mariners were poised for a big inning. Luckily Hughes got out of that inning untouched. In the fifth inning on an 0-2 fastball the Yankees took a HUGE blow. Phil Hughes suffered another injury with torn elbow cartilage. He would be gone for 3-4 months. The Yankees would get out of the inning with just one run but loss of Hughes was too much. He was placed on the 60-day DL. The Yankees were devastated by this injury and had no comment. Hughes short career has ben one with many injuries and he hopes he can get things on track ASAP.

Girardi had this to say. "It's sad to see such a young pitcher have so many injuries. We really need him to suceed to help this team and now we'll have to wait and see if he can come back strong."

Message from the big boss
Hughes done for season. Yankees owner Brian Cashman made a crucial decision and decided it be best to have Hughes finish this season in AAA Scranton because the Yankees are in 4th place in the AL East with 0 chance of making the playoffs. Hughes was very dissapointed but says, "There's always next year." Ian Kennedy was called up and will finish the season with the team.
