Breaking News out of Thibodaux, Louisiana

The current coach at Nicholls State University, J.D Piper has been fired. The information has been scarce but we have heard rumors saying it is a recruiting issue. They have already hired a new head coach to fill his spot. His name is Elijah Landon.

He coached at the Peabody Warhorses in Shreveport, LA. He coached them to five Louisiana State Championships. He has won five 4A District 3 League championships in the past 5 years. He is a very accomplished coach. Before coming to Peabody, he coached at a D3 school. They were the Eckerd Tritons. He led them to one D3 championship game, but lost. After 1 year of coaching there, he went to Peabody.

Twenty-nine year old, Coach Landon stated after he accepted the $500,000 contract, “That he is excited about coming to Nicholls State and coach in the NCAA’s. I want to bring a new level to this basketball program and turn them into a well-known team."

Interview with Mr. Landon

Reporter: Do you have any goals going into the season?

Elijah:
Ya, I have a few so far:
-Win at least 13 games
-Sign a 3 star recruit
-Beat two of the following teams: FSU, LSU, California, Alabama, UNC, Minnesota

Reporter: You have one graduating Senior and 1 scholarship to offer, How are you going to use it?

Elijah: Well all I am going to say now is that I have a *** SF, ***PF and a **SF. Even though I only have one scholarship to offer, I would like anyone of those players on my team.

Reporter: How do you think you will fair with your very tough non-Conference schedule?

Elijah: Well we have a very diverse schedule. We play 2 teams from the ACC, 2 from the SEC, 1 from the PAC 10, and 1 from the Big Ten. we also play some tough mid majors like St. Mary’s (West Coast) and UNLV. I predict a 6-9 of better record coming out of Non-Conference play.

Coach Landon's Pre- game Thoughts: We are outmatched on paper but the paper doesn't mean anything. This is the first game of the season and we need to come out firing on all cylinders, anything can happen. We need to make our 3's and our easy layups. We will have a tough time rebounding but if we can keep even with them in that department I think we got a great chance to make an early name for ourselves around the country, especially in Tallahassee.

you got some good shooters. it helps a lot. in my first season i had 1 shooter he drained everything. he was a SR so 2nd season he was gone. i got lucky recruiting and signing 2 seven footers cuz i was one of the worst 3 pt shooting teams in th country. now in my 3rd season, i got like 2 or 3 pretty good shooters, plus an extra 7 footer, so im lookin to do even better than season 2s Final Four Appearance with Long Island

Ya, they will have to carry my team, as I have little help inside. I do have that 6'10 54 overall C that has a good inside, mid range and suprising 3pt. That was kinda of weird to me.

Tough Battle for the Colonels
1st Half
Boyce had the first 6 points of the game for the Colonels. After that Florida St. had the lead until the Colonels tied it up at 13 with 7:57 left in the half. With 5:01 to go Nicholls State took the lead 21-20, but it would soon be erased. They battled for a while and FSU headed into the break on top 40-36.
2nd Half
The Colonels kept in this one for a while; they had the lead down to 3 with 8:20 left to go in the game. With 6:25 to go FSU would go up by ten and then they would double there lead with 4:04 left to do in the game. The lead never got under 12 as the Seminoles won the game with no problem, 84-66

Coach Landon's Pre- game Thoughts: Well this is a much easier game then the FSU one. We are pretty evenly mathed and the 1,2 and 3 spots but they are better then us in the 1 and 2 spots. We will look to shut down Gomez in the paint. He will be there leading scorer. If we can shut him down then we will have an easy win. We can't take this game for granted, we have to hit our shots and do a way better jod at rebounding the ball then we did in our first game.

Slow Start, Comeback Kings?
1st Half
Nicholls State and Tulane started out pretty even. Then Tulane went on an 7-0 run to push the lead to 11, up 27-16 with 5:47 left in the half. That is when everthing went downhill and the Colonels missed everthing from wide open 3's to wide open layups. The Colonels headed into the break down 47-28. Nicholls State shoot 48% from the field and The Green Wave shot 80%.
2nd Half
The lead was flirting with single and double digit leads for most of the half, but Tulane pushed it to 16 with 2:39 to go. That is when the 3's turned on for the Colonels. They got to a 5 point defecit with 44 seconds to go. Bathie missed a 3 to make it a 2 point game, they hit both free throws. Boyce hit a 3, it was 4, then they hit 1 free throw. Bathie hit a 3 to make it a 2 point lead with a mere .6 left on the clock. They had to little to late as they are downed with the second loss of the season. 82-80

Coach Landon's Pre- game Thoughts: This is the best team I think we will have played so far. They are very balanced but again we have to shut down the big guys. We will have to be at least even with them in rebounding. Our 3's will help us make it a close game. We are out matched in every category. Even though I think this is the toughest game yet, It might be our first win!!!

Can Nicholls State score only 65 and Win?
1st Half The largest lead in the half was four and it was held by both teams at one point. Nicholls State 4 point lead was at 5:45 and Cal's was at 3:30. It was a three point lead at the break by Cal, with the score at30-27.

2nd HalfCal quickly goes up 34-27 and then Nicholls State goes up 37-36. Then with 3:23 left in the game, Boyce has a 3 point play to make the lead to 8, the next possession Randle hits Cal's first 3 of the game. With 56 seconds left to play Bathie hits a 3 that is at least 10 feet behind the NBA 3!, to make the lead 59-53. It comes within a 3 point game but Nicholls hits there free throws to win the game 65-60

Holly Rowe Talked to Coach Landon after his first Career win:
Holly: How was it to get your first win against this quality of a team?
Coach Landon: It was one of the best experiences of my life and I see many more in the near future!
Holly: How big of a shot was that by Bathie?
CL: I haven't been around college basketball a long time but I know that was a huge shot. When he took off his feet were almost on top of mine, that is how far out he was.
Holly: Thanks for your time coach.
Cl: Anytime.

2 in a row?
1st Half The game opened up pretty quick with the teams playing pretty even. Nicholls State went on a 13-2 run and went up 20-12 with 5:26 to play. The teams traded baskets all the way to the end of the half. There were a total of 25 3pt shots taken between the two teams. They ended up right were they started, tied at 37-37.

2nd HalfThe second half was one of the most exciting games to play. The lead never reached to more then 3 until Bathie hit two straight 3's to put Nicholls State up 6. Before that each team answered each other to perfection. When one team hit a three the other team hit a three. When one team tunred it over another team turned it over. Then in the end the 3 pt shooting by unlikely players come through. Gray hit 2 big 3's in the final stretch of the game and so did Bathie as they edeged out UC Davis 79-71

Could it be 3 in a row?
1st Half This game got off to a slow start, half way through the half there was only a total 26 points. Nicholls State @ LSU

Are the Colonels slipping?
1st Half Nicholls State jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first 3 minutes. Nicholls State lead the whole half with the smallest lead with 3:20 left to play. LSU did not show up to play. They came out really cocky and the Colonels jumped on that. LSU shot 33% from the field in the first half.31-25

Scott Cody from WWLTV talked to Elijah between the half's.
Cody:How do you think your team played?
CL: Well we could have played better. We are only up six against a team shooting 33%, that is horrible.
Cody: This is the LSU Tigers though.
CL: They could be the #1 team ever to play in College Basketball history, we play to win the games!!
Cody: Thanks for your time coach.

2nd Half The LSU Tigers bus must have come late because out of the gate they cut the lead down quick. They took thier first lead of the game 43-32 with 7:25 left in the game. They soon made that lead 6. Boyce had a 3 pointt play to cut the lead down to one with6:20 left. Each team matched each other down the stretch. With 1 minute to play the LSU Tigers were up 1 and had the ball. They made a two, so did the Colonels. They hit both of their free throws. Bathie missed a wide open 3 to tie the game with 15 seconds left on the clock. The Tigers made their free throws to escape with a win 73-67.
