Greenberg Announces 2007-08 Men's Basketball Schedule

RADFORD, Va. – Radford University men’s basketball coach Brad Greenberg announced the Highlanders 2007-08 schedule Tuesday. Highlighted by a trip to face Final Four participant Georgetown, a home game versus West Virginia and trips to Michigan, Air Force and South Carolina, it also features a Homecoming doubleheader in February.

"The very best way for a team to improve is to continually test its limits,” Greenberg said. “Non-conference games against Georgetown, Michigan, South Carolina, West Virginia and Air Force will be significant tests and a great way for our team to grow prior to Big South play.”

The Highlanders open the season with a pair of games in Michigan. RU will play at the University of Michigan to tip-off the season on Nov. 9. Two days later, Radford faces Eastern Michigan before returning to the Dedmon Center to open the home docket.

The Highlanders will play a total of 13 home games this season, six of which are Saturday games. RU opens the home schedule versus future Big South member Presbyterian on Nov. 14, marking the earliest regular season game ever played at the Dedmon Center. The most notable home game comes on Dec. 19 when West Virginia becomes the first Big East team to play at RU.

Radford will play at Air Force during the week of Thanksgiving for the second straight year. The game at Georgetown, which will be played at their on-campus facility, McDonough Arena, follows final exams on Dec. 15, and then two days later the Highlanders play at in-state rival James Madison (Dec. 17). Those two games are part of a regional three games in five days stretch for RU that concludes with the WVU game.

“We will continue to try and schedule in state opponents and our game at JMU will be returned to Radford next season,” Greenberg said. “We have 13 home games and hope to draw enthusiastic fans to the Dedmon Center from the Radford student body, the City of Radford, the New River Valley and Roanoke Valley in support of our team."

After the holidays, Radford resumes play Jan. 2 at South Carolina, RU’s final road tune-up before the start of Big South Conference play. The Highlanders kick off the Big South Conference slate with their annual beach trip, playing Coastal Carolina on Jan. 12 and Charleston Southern on Jan. 14. RU’s first home Big South game is against Winthrop on Jan. 19.

The men’s basketball team hosts arch-rival Liberty on Feb. 2 in Radford’s first winter Homecoming. The game is part of a doubleheader with the women’s basketball team. RU closes out its home regular season schedule with UNC Asheville (Feb. 20) and VMI (Feb. 23). The Highlanders finish the regular season on the road, playing at High Point on Feb. 27 and at Liberty on Mar. 1.

The Big South Conference Championship will again be played at the home sites of the highest seed throughout the tournament. The single-elimination championship, which will be played Mar. 4-8, will determine the League’s representative in the NCAA Tournament.

Very nice. Love the pic. You got some tough games, but as long as you can play well, they will help prepare you for the regular season.

Donald N. Dedmon Center

The Dedmon Center, a state-of-the-art recreational and convocation complex, opened in 1981. The center was only the tenth permanent structure with an air-supported fabric roof built in the United States, and its superb design and versatility have made it an eye-popping addition to campus. More than that, it opened a new era for all three sports interests on campus - intercollegiate competition, intramurals and individual recreation.

The complex features several adjoining facilities, including intermural soccer, football and softball fields and intercollegiate fields and courts for baseball, softball, field hockey and tennis. In addition Patrick D. Cupp Stadium adds a intercollegiate soccer and track and field complex.

The Center itself features a 1/6-mile indoor jogging track; five racquetball courts; a weight-training room with Nautilus and Universal equipment; spacious locker rooms; several team rooms; showers and steamrooms; the main arena featuring a main basketball floor and a secondary volleyball arena for intercollegiate competition and four recreational courts for basketball or volleyball.

One of the more amazing things about the Dedmon Center is its versatility. The arena area can be customized to the current needs, including setting up a 5,000-seat arena for basketball or a 1,000-seat arena for volleyball. The arena is also used for concerts, graduation and other large university events.

Dude I live an hour and a half from Radford campus. They should have a beer bong for their center court logo!

Better watch when you play VMI. Reggie Williams, and the twins are off the chain. I live in Lexington where VMI campus is located so I saw them play a couple times this year.

You'll also play UNC Greensboro. They have the biggest guy on the game. Kenny George. 7'7 360#

Men's Basketball Falls At Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--Radford men's basketball lost its season opener at Michigan, 82-55 Friday night at Crisler arena.

The Wolverines (1-0) tallied 27 points off of 19 RU turnovers and scooped up offensive rebounds to earn 17 second-chance points, 14 of which came in the first half.

"We didn't do a good job against their half-court traps," Radford coach Brad Greenberg said. "That enabled them to get too many fast-break baskets and they were able to continue to use that defense after scores."

The Highlanders (0-1) jumped out of the gate quickly, winning the opening tap and racing down to take a 2-0 lead on a running layup by junior guard Martell McDuffy (Laurel, Md.). The Wolverines followed with a couple of buckets, to take the lead, but a three-pointer by sophomore Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) forced the game's third tie, this one at seven. A 13-5 Michigan run put the host school out in front for good RU made an effort to close the gap on a three-pointer by junior guard Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va.) that pulled RU within six, but that was as close as it got.

McDuffy (Laurel, Md.) led RU with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 3-for-5 from three-point range. Thomas added 10, shooting 50 percent from the field.

The Wolverines placed five players in double figures, led by DeShawn Sims 23. Sims also had a team-high seven rebounds.

Sophomore Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va.), expected to be one of RU's keys post players, finished with a career-high eight rebounds to lead all players. Johnson had seven assists for RU.
