Team Preview

Over the past decade, the Kansas State men's basketball program has been looking for its way. The program looked like it was finally headed in the right direction when Bob Huggins came in and led the team to 23 wins in his first season as head coach. However, after only one season in Manhattan, Huggins bolted for his alma-mater West Virginia, leaving the Wildcats without a head coach. The spot was filled by Frank Martin, who was an assistant under Huggins last season.

Although his tenure was short lived, "Huggie Bear" certainly made an impact on the program. In just one season, he was able to land the greatest recruiting class in the program's history, headed by the #1 overall prospect, Michael Beasley from Washington D.C. Beasley. Beasley, as well as 5 other freshman, join a team that was a win or two away from making the NCAA Tournament last season.

However, the team is missing several key pieces from last season. Last year's team had 5 seniors, including Cartier Martin who led the team in scoring. 7'3" center Jason Bennett is leaving the school. To top it all off, David Hoskins, who averaged 14.5 PPG and 5.9 RPG as a junior last season, will miss the entire season with a knee injury. The NCAA has granted him another year of eligibility, so he will be in Manhattan next season.

Speaking of eligibility being granted, K-State can add another freshman to its roster. Bill Walker, who was a highly touted recruit for the Wildcats' 2006 class, missed all but 7 games last season due to an ACL injury. He was granted an extra year by the NCAA, meaning he is still a freshman. Walker is expected to do big things in his first full season for K-State.

The biggest question for this young team is the Point Guard position. That position is currently held by Clent Stewart, a senior from Tulsa, Oklahoma who averaged 6.5 PPG and 2.9 APG last season. While the primary scoring for the Wildcats comes from the forwards, the team can only go as far as guards Stewart and Blake Young are able to take them.

Projection: 20-9 (9-7), NCAA Tournament

Game Preview

Months of hype can finally be put to rest, as the college basketball season is ready to begin in Manhattan, Kansas. Tonight will be the debut of the heralded freshman class for the Wildcats, led by Michael Beasley who will start at Center. Beasley was named a Preseason 2nd Team All-American by 2K Sports. Tonight is also Frank Martin's debut as Kansas State's head coach.

The Wildcats will face a Sacramento State team that is currently in a rebuilding process. The Hornets, coached by Jerome Jenkins, went just 10-19 last season, failing to even qualify for their postseason conference tournament. They have three starters back from last season, led by Loren Leath who averaged 12.8 PPG last season.

Many people think Kansas State should've been ranked in the Top 25 to start the season. However, David Hoskins being out for the season could've possibly hurt their chances. Although Hoskins would've been a starter for this team, they should still be an NCAA Tournament team without him, barring any major injuries or chemistry problems. If all goes well, tonight will be the first step for the Wildcats on the way to the NCAA Tournament.

BEASLEY, CATS OUTLAST SAC STATE, 73-58

Game Recap

Freshman Michael Beasley had 22 points and 7 rebounds in his first game at Kansas State, leading the Wildcats to a 73-58 victory over Sacramento State on Friday night. Bill Walker added 20 points and 5 rebounds for the Cats. The game was supposed to be a blowout, but only up 5 at half, K-State put their foot on the gas and pulled away from the Hornets in the second half.

Kansas State coach Frank Martin was surprised with the Hornets' effort. "No disrespect to them, but we didn't expect to be challenged as much as we were tonight," Martin said in his post-game press conference. The Hornets were sparked by great shooting from their guards. Loren Leath was lethal from downtown in the first half, going 3-4. Leath had 19 points in the game.

The Hornets were only down 5 at half, and took a lead at 41-40 in the beginning of the second half. After a Wildcats' time out, the momentum took a full 180, and Kansas State began to pull away. The Wildcats will have over a week of no game action until the 17th, when they take on the Leathernecks of Western Illinois. Hopefully the extra time will get the Cats fully prepared for the game.

Western Illinois Leathernecks (1-0) vs. Kansas State Wildcats (1-0)

Game Preview

After a nice win over the Hornets of Sacramento State back on November 8th, Michael Beasley and the Kansas State Wildcats will host the 1-0 Leathernecks of Western Illinois. Beasley led all scorers and rebounders in the game with 22 and 7. Coach Frank Martin and the Wildcats have had over a week to prepare for this game, certainly he should have the team ready.

The Wildcats will have to come in a lockdown on the defense if they want to win the game. They held the Hornets to only 58 points in their first game, but Western Illinois erupted for 82 points in their first game of the season. The Wildcats must be able to prevent the Leathernecks from being able to put the basketball into the hoop, or else this could be a dangerous game for Frank Martin's team.

The guards are going to play a pivotal part in this game. In their first game, Western Illinois shot 58 percent from behind the three-point line. In order to prevent that from happening again, Clent Stewart, Blake Young, and all other players on the perimeter are going to have to pressure the ball and not give up open looks. If that happens, we should see the Wildcats improve to 2-0.
