View Full Version : Coach Ken Spencer's BYU Legacy

I wanted to do a closed legacy and then end of at BYU, but it just takes too long. I simulated legacies twice to see how long it would take to be able to take over BYU, and Coach Dave Rose makes it to Retirement both times (20+ years down the road. I think it was 2033).

So, my only choice is to start at BYU in an open legacy and play like it is about the 5th year of a legacy (so that BYU would consider me a head coach).

My coach will start out with what I would have chosen as the first stats I would have picked if I had played for about 4 years. I will start with 18 points (5+13) and will not get points for the following 13 things:

BYU Hires High School Coach

Springville High School's head coach Ken Spencer was hired Monday as head coach at Brigham Young University.

Spencer just completed his fifth year as head coach at Springville High School in Springville, Utah. His coaching at Springville High is his only coaching experience. He replaces Dave Rose, who died in a car crash two months ago. "Coach Rose really was doing a wonderful job at BYU before he passed away. I really admired the program and believe that he has really started the process of putting BYU on the map basketball world. I send my condolences to his family and friends, and want to let them know that our thought and prayers go out to them."

Surprisingly, Ken Spencer (only 30 years old) was chosen to be the head coach over a number of a choice that seemed much better. Just prior to Dave Rose's death, Dave Rice was made associate head coach, and many of the BYU faithful thought he would be named head coach. In a press release, Coach Rice said the following, "I have chosen to remain on the BYU staff and continue as associate head coach. I love this program, and I love living in this area." Many are still baffled why Brigham Young University would hire someone who has no D1 coaching experience.

Tom Holmoe, BYU Athletic Director responded to everyones surprise of the hiring of Ken Spence as BYU's new head basketball coach with this statement, "I have know Ken for several years. I have watched him take Springville High from one of the worst programs in the State into a State Championship contender for the last two years. Springville High is expected to win the state championship this coming year. Ken has done this with the small amount of talent that Sprngville can produce. He knows how to develop players. That is what we need here at BYU. Utah is a small State, with some really good talent, but we can not compete with the big boys if we don't do the most with what we have. Coach Spencer can turn our good players into great ones and that will turn our good program into a great one. Many think that I have taken a great risk by hiring coach Spencer, but I don't think we could have made a better choice."

Dave Rice chose to turn down several offers from smaller programs to remain at BYU. When asked if he was disappointed with the choice in the new head coach he replied, "I have full confidence in Coach Ken Spencer. I had a good relationship with him when he was at Springville High. I talked to him often concerning recruiting his players, as he has sent several players to D1 basketball. I support him completely and pledge all of my efforts to the success of this program." Coach Rice has helped develop BYU into a great offensive team and will continue to run the offense for Coach Spencer.

Coach Spencer, commenting on his excitement to take over this new responsibility stated, "This has always been, and will always be my dream job! I have been BYU fan since I was a young boy. I am an alumnus of BYU, and even though I did not play college ball, I came to all the games. I will continue Coach Rose's success and lead BYU to national prominence in basketball."

Yeah, the way he played in post season really doesn't bide well for him. I hope that he stays, and he really should to develop his game. I actualy think that Lee Cumard is a better pro prospect. He reminds me of AK, but with a much better shot.

BYU played pretty well in a win over Long Beach State. Long Beach was only down by two at half, but the Cougars were shooting poorly from Treville, their depth on the bench was too much for the 49ers. Cougars win 76 - 60

Interesting look. I have been reading legacys from the start of the year on here and that is the 1st time I have seen people doing screen shots, except the Newspaper looking one that Chestnutz did, which I loved.

Good work. Not a big BYU fan(I grew up in Boise and am a huge Boise State fan and a really good kid from my youth group played football for Utah, so you are somewhat a rival) but I will follow. :)

Thanks Deuce,

A lot of people don't like BYU, but I am a huge fan. I really appreciate the feedback. Hopefully we can beat your Broncos in my legacy (unlike in real life).

Yeah, It is a Mormon (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) school. It is a great school. I graduated from the Business School there. I think it is ranked in the top 25 in the country. Plus, compared to a lot of other schools, it is really inexpensive.

The volleyball team at BYU is the best in the Nation. They are consistently in the top 5 and have won the National Championship twice since 2001. It is a lot more fun to watch volleyball than I would have thought (especially when you have a really good team).

BYU Moves to 2-0 as Jackson State is no match for the Cougars
http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/IMG_1683Medium.jpg

Trent Plaisted had 23 points and Chris Miles had 19 as Jackson State could not find an answer for BYU’s low post game. Plaisted scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half to lead the Cougars to a 6 point half time lead. The second half was all Cougars as they would blow out Jackson State 90 - 64.

Cougars Beat Bengals in Cat Fight!

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/IMG_1696Medium.jpg

Idaho State refused to roll over and let the better rated Cougars dominate them. The Bengals only trailed by 2 points at the half. Kinghorn and Kirkpatrick each put up 11 points to keep the Bengals close. Plaisted led the Cougars with 10. The Bengals fought hard to keep the game close, but the Cougars bench players outplayed them and added to the Cougars growing lead. Four of BYU’s starters would score in double figures, and Vuk Ivanovic would add 13 to help the Cougars cruise to an easy victory. Cougars win 85 - 67.

Trent Plaisted won player of the game with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists.

BYU Beats Jackson State for the 2nd Time!

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/IMG_1707Medium.jpg

The Cougars beat Jackson State for the second time this year. This game was never close, as BYU shot 56% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc. Coach Spencer commented on his Cougars great play, “I just love how well we shared the ball tonight. We have really been working on making the extra pass and getting open looks. It seems like we are really starting to learn that principle.” The Cougars had 23 assists on the night. They won easily 95 - 68

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/IMG_1723Medium.jpg

Down 10 at the break, and shooting 0% behind the arc, the Hawks would show no hart, and end up losing the game by 21. Christ Miles played huge off the bench as he put up 15 points and 12 rebound to be the only Cougar with a double-double. Trent Plaisted would totally dominate the paint with 26 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks. The Cougars win 78 - 57

Cougars Play Biggest Game of the year against #4 Louisville

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/IMG_1735Medium.jpg

The Cougars and Cardinals met in Las Vegas at the Thomas and Mack Center in the 1st Round. The Cougars looked to be completely outmatched against the 4th ranked Cardinals. In the first half the Cougars forgot how to play defense, as the Cardinals shot 69% from the field while only making 1 of their 4 attempts behind the arc. This torrid shooting led them to a 17 point half-time lead.

At half time Coach Spencer got angry, and believe me, he never gets angry. This set some of the fire back under his Cougars and got them to play with a lot more heart than in the first half. With six minutes to go the 17 point lead had been cut to 5. Then, the Cougars ran out of gas. They played their hearts out, but couldn’t stop the Cardinals, who went on to shot 61% for the night. The final score was 70 - 80.

BYU Faces Butterflies (Monarchs) [SIZE]

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/IMG_1753Medium.jpg

The Cougars seemed to really let their loss to Louisville faze them in the first half as Old Dominion would take a 17 point lead only 6 minutes into the game. The Cougars would rally and fight back on the great play of the bench and cut it to 8, but the terrific 3-point shooting by the Monarchs (isn’t that a girls basketball team name?) (67% on 6 of 9 shooting ) would help them stay up by 8 at half-time. Monarchs 48, Cougars 40.

The BYU Cougars would score the opening bucket of the second half, but that is as close as they would get to the Monarchs in this game. The Monarchs just flew away with the game. At one point they held a 20 point lead. Good Hustle and 3-point shooting helped the Cougars climb back, but their turnovers proved to be their downfall as they committed 11 in this game, many coming at crucial times. The Cougars dropped this game 71 - 84.

I took my PS3 with me on my business trip out here to San Francisco. I am hoping to get a lot of games in since I am away from my wife. I didn't bring my HDMI cable though because I didn't think that the hotel's TV would support it, but it turns out that they have a 32" LCD in my room. It is really nice; it isn't my 55" at home, but still nice. The problem is that I am stuck with my SD cables because I don't want to throw down for a new HDMI cable out here. I will be here until Friday. We will see how far I can get by then.

I can't play on anything but HD now. I have a 56" HD that I normally play on and at Christmas I went back to Boise to my parents who have a old school big screen like 50" but no HD, I could barely read the stats. It was horrible.

Do you have Boise State on your schedule?? If not this season then you need to add them next year. Also maybe a game against Gonzaga. I am currently Coach Scott at Gonzaga but also had Coach Dezaron and Coach Akpan both at Boise State earlier in the year.

I though about reviving Coach Akpan coming home to coach at UNLV being how he grew up in Vegas.

I really struggled playing the games I played in SD. I was am so used to HD. I also am having more of a difficult time with release points on the smaller TV. I am so used to my 55 " that I have to sit really close to te 32" or I struggle.

BYU Gets back on track against Portland

It wasn’t easy, but the Cougars were able to put everything together to leave Portland with a win Saturday night. The game was fairly close the entire way even though BYU outshot Portland from the field 65% to 48%. The Cougars great shooting made up for the fact that Portland was able to pull down 6 more offensive boards. Trent Plaisted led the way for the Cougars with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The final score was 80 - 71.

Coach Spencer signs BYU's first Recruit
at the beginning of the Early Signing Period!

Coach Spencer signed BYU's first recruit Yesterday when he signed highly sought after 7’0” center Jean Francois Merriex. Merriex comes originally from France but moved to California when he was in Junior High School to pursue his basketball talents. Jean Pierre, Jean Francois’ father, was a professional basketball player in Europe. He said he decided to move his family to the USA to give his son a change to make it in the NBA. “You can make so much money in the NBA. I only made a decent salary in Europe. I want my son to have more,” said Jean Pierre about his decision to bring his family to the USA.

When asked why he chose BYU Jean Francois replied, “BYU has a good tradition of working with international players. They have several players on the team now from outside the USA in Vuk, Johnathan, and Archie. They recently sent Raphael Araujo to the NBA at the center position. They have a history of working well with big men. I think I have the potential to make it to the NBA, and I think that Coach Spencer can help teach me the things that I need to get there.”

Coach Spencer comments on his first recruit at BYU showed his belief in the future of BYU backetball, "I think that Jean Francois is a great recruit for BYU. He gives us much needed depth inside and will get the opportunity to fight for playing time from day one. He not only bring power down low, but brings the finese he has learned growing up in Europe. I think that Jean Francois is the first of many great acquisitions at BYU. We want to raise the bar of the talent level we bring to BYU. We know there are great players that want to come here, and we are getting better at locating and signing those players."

I'm stuck on my sucky 25 inch regular old SDTV and, yes, it is somewhat hard to read the stats at time. 2k7 was HORRIBLE for us SDTV'ers, at least for me. The graphics were jaggy and it was terribly hard to read stats. The stats are easier to read this year and I can pretty much always make out what it says, but it is still a little blurry.

That's why when I hear people saying they are disappointed with 2K8's graphics, I'm like "WHAT!", because they seem like they are 10 times better than last year's to me. I think the graphics are really good this year.

Anyways, nice dynasty and I am following!

Yeah, this game is great on a big screen HD. I always loved playing earlier versions of 2K on SD, but the game got so much better for me when I moved up to HD.

Thanks for following SuperJames!

Weber State looks to know off BYU in Provo

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/IMG_1791Medium.jpg

BYU played the first of many in-state games this year as the faced Weber State Wednesday night. Weber state came ready to play as they quickly built up a big lead on the Cougars. BYU couldn’t make a shot and Weber State seemed to hit everything as BYU was out shot 65% to 25% in the first half. Coach Spencer showed his disgust with his team as they headed to the locker room by staying out on the court. With only a few minutes left to go until the start of the second half, Coach Spencer got up and slowly made his way to the locker room. Whatever he said in that one minute before the Cougars returned to the floor seemed to make a difference.

The Cougars fought and clawed their way back into this game through tough defense. BYU forced 10 turnovers in the second half and scored 14 points off of those turnovers. The Cougars were only down by two with 34 seconds on the clock. Lamond Morgan held the ball of the top of the key, letting the clock tick down. He called a simple pick-and-roll play with Trent Plaisted. As Trent rolled off of the pick, he cleared some space between himself and his defender. Morgan made and beautiful dish and Trent threw the ball down. The crowd went wild as the Cougars evened the score. Weber State inbounded the ball and tried to get close the basket, but BYU’s excellent defense forced Silverira to throw up a desperation shot way behind the 3-point line. The ball would hit the rim, but then fall the floor, causing the game to go into overtime. Cougars 70 – Weber State 70.

Trent Plaisted continued to dominate the paint in overtime. He scored 6 of his 30 points before he sat down 2 minutes into overtime. Lee ****ard and Sam Burgess also hit a pair of threes each, to turn what looked like a close game, into a blowout. The Cougars would continue on the pace they set in the second half by scoring 23 points and forcing 7 turnovers in overtime.
After dominating the overtime period, the Cougars win 93 - 74.

#7 Michigan State comes to Provo

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/IMG_1815Medium.jpg

BYU faces the its second top 10 team this year as #7 Michigan State comes to the Marriott Center. Michigan State looks to dominate the Cougars, as all experts say they are the much better team. Coach Spencer commented on his teams preparation for the Spartan, “Losing the Louisville in Las Vegas was hard, but it taught this team some hard lessons that can only be learned through experience. We have grown from that loss, and it has made us a much better ball club. Even though Michigan State is favored in this game, don’t expect us to lie down and let them walk all over us. In fact, I think every one of the players on our team expects to win this game.”

The Cougars would prove that they did think they could win this game, as they would jump out to a 5 point lead only minutes into the game. The pace was blistering as both teams wanted to push the tempo, and both shot extremely well. The Cougars would show that they had the determination to back up Coach Spencer’s words, as they would keep the lead most of the first half, and go into the locker room with a 49 - 43 edge.

Trent Plaisted and Chris Miles had monster 1st halves with 17 and 13 points respectively. JT Tavarnari would show his diversity and skill with the ball by dishing out 7 assists.

As the second half began, the Cougars would prove that it wasn’t a fluke that they were leading at the half by pushing their 6 point lead to 10. The Cougars looked like they could pull off this great upset when after a spectacular dunk Trent Plaisted fell the ground, holding his ankle. With the help of the trainers, he made his way the sideline. This could be devastating to the Cougars hopes to win this game. Trent is their leading scorer, putting up about 20 a game.

The Cougar faithful would put their trust in Sophmore Chris Miles as the trainers recommended that star PF Trent Plaisted sit the rest of this game out. As they announced the news over the PA system a groan sounded from the 22,700 fans in the sold-out Marriott Center; but then the coolest thing happened. One of the students started chanting, “Chris, Chris, Chris…,” and then the whole stadium joined in with the cheer. The energy that had left the arena when Plaisted went down was now back, and the Cougars were ready to continue the fight.

The Spartans, despite the hostility of the crowd, would start to inch their way back into the game. First they drew within 7, then 5, then 1. With 5:55 remaining on the clock, the Cougars clung to a one point lead. Both teams played well and with 1:32 remaining the Spartan called a timeout. The Cougars still held a 2 point lead, and were fighting for the respect they felt they deserved. Miles would score off a great pass from Burgess, but the Spartans would hit Neitzel coming off a screen, and he would hit the 15 foot jumper. With only 11.8 seconds to go, the Cougars would inbound the ball to JT Tavernari and the Spartans would immediately send him to the foul line. JT missed the first, keeping the Spartans chances alive. He reset himself, and calmly hit the second attempt. The Spartans would inbound the ball and push it up the courts, but the Cougars defense would prevent them from getting the ball to Neitzel, and Walton would miss his only 3-point attempt of the night, and the Cougars would beat the Spartans 84 - 81.

Reporter Kristen Jolley got Coach Spencer to comment on his teams great win over the Spartans, “I knew we could do it! It wasn’t easy, especially after we lost Trent; but Miles played great and our whole team played with a lot of heart. Give credit to these boys for leaving it all on the floor.” She then asked him what his strategy was to beat such a great team, “Well,” he said, “We just tied to limit Neitzel’s touches. He is such a great player when he gets looks at the basket. We didn’t know if we could defend him if he got off 20 shots tonight, so we played a tight man on him and tried to limit his touches. Mudock, Morgan, and Burgess did a great job of containing him.” Neitzel only got off 7 shots tonight, scoring 12 points and serving up 5 assists. Jolley asked, “Coach what do you have to say about Miles great play?” “Well, he was absolutely amazing. His work ethic in the weight room and his devotion to being a great student of the game have really paid off. His 29 points and 4 steals were vital in tonight’s win over the Spartans.”

Coach Spencer Continues Recruiting Success!

Coach Spencer signed BYU's second recruit this year when Alvin Souffrant signed a letter of intent in the early signing period. Alvin joins the 7’0” center Jean Francois Merriex who signed at week ago when the early signing period began. Souffrant is a local Utah boy who grew up in Layton. Souffrant was not heavily recruited by some of the bigger schools because he came from a program that barely won half of their games. Souffrant was heavily relied on to take most of the shots a Layton High School because he was the only senior on a team devoid of talent. “I am really excited to be going to BYU! I had also thought of going to the Air Force academy, but Coach Spencer convinced me to be a Cougar. He told me that I had the talent to be a very special player at BYU, and that if I worked very hard, he would turn me into the type of player that the NBA scouts would come out to see. I don’t know what it is about Coach Spencer, but I really like him; and I believe he can do what he says he can do. ”

When reporter Kristen Jolley asked Souffrant if he knew that he was 15th on the Scouts recruiting list, Souffrant acted surprised, “really, I had no idea. I didn’t think I would be that high with so few big schools coming after me.” Coach Spencer remarks on landing Souffrant show his increasing enthusiasm in the future of Cougar Basketball, “I told you when we landed Merriex that we were going to take BYU to the national scene. I will tell you again. We will take BYU from being the MWC champion to being a national powerhouse.”

Jacob Sorenson, a recruiting specialist from Scout.com commented on BYU’s recruiting class so far this year, “This is already a very special recruiting class for BYU. With landing Merriex (#47 overall and #6 center) a 4-star recruit, and Soffrant (#15 overall and #7 shooting guard),a 5-star recruit, Utah’s Mr. Basketball, and a High School All-American, they should have a top 20 recruiting class this year. I am really impressed at the quality kids Coach Spencer is bringing into his program. If BYU continues to recruit like they have in the early signing period this year, expect them to make good on Coach Spencer’s promise of making BYU a national powerhouse.”

Lamar hopes to knock off the Cougars

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/IMG_1881Medium.jpg

Lamar came to Provo tonight hoping to find the Cougars down after BYU’s great win again Michigan State, but the Cougars played great in the first half, jumping out to a 35 - 28 lead at half time. Chris Miles was the big story, as he put up 16 point to lead the Cougars.

Trent Plaisted is back after injuring his ankle in the Michigan State game, but seems to have a slower step, even though trainers have declared him 100% healthy. Chris Miles got more minutes tonight at PF, and it really paid off for the Cougars. He dominated down-low and led BYU to victory. Miles played a very important role tonight as his Cougars only made 2 of the 15 3-pointers they attempted tonight. The Cougars turned up the heat on defense and forced the Lamar Cardinals to commit 14 turnovers. The Cougars took very good care of the ball, as they only committed 4.
BYU Wins 83 - 68.

Chris Miles was the Player of the Game with 42 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, and 1 assist.

Chris Miles Under Investigation for Use of Performance Enhancers

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm279/skpope/chris.gif

Chris Miles, 6’11” Sophomore center, has been put under investigation by Brigham Young University for the possible use of performance enhancers. The investigation started yesterday when one of Chris’ unnamed roommates tipped off the University that Chris might be using something to help him play better on the court. “I see him taking pills every morning. They are in a bottle without a label, so I don’t know what they are. I think it is obvious though. You saw what he has been doing lately, 29 points against Michigan State, and 42 points against Lamar. 42 points is the most scored by any Cougar this year! I have noticed that he has been getting more aggressive lately too,” said our source, who asked to not be named.

Miles recently returned from serving a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oregon. After returning from a mission, most players struggle to regain their previous playing level and often red-shirt to give them another year to get back in shape. Miles recent play has lots of people curious as to why he is playing so well this year, after not playing basketball very often for the last two years.
Miles has been cleared to continue practicing with the team and at this time will be eligible to play in the upcoming game against Pepperdine. This is only a University investigation, but if Miles is using performance enhancers, he could be kicked off the team, and possibly expelled from the University. BYU places a very high standard on their students and expect total honesty.
